• Must all new features go through betatest?

  Obviously, small usability fixes and bugfixes go directly into the stable product. What about small new features? Can you afford to just release them after internal testing, or do they have to be betatested by customers first? Situation: This is a young commercial project, produced by a one-person company. It has an existing userbase and is at it's second major version. Previous betatests have produced some results, however most feedback came from the stable product and not from beta versions.

  I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

• Creating an in-house single source software development team

  Our company wants to create a single department for all software development efforts (rather than having software development managed by each business unit). Business units would then "outsource" their software needs to this department. What would you setup as concerns/expectations that must be cleared before doing this? For example: Need agreement between units on how much actual time (FTE) is allocated to each unit Need agreement on scheduling of staff need agreement on request procedure if extra time is required by one party etc... Have you been in a situation like this as a manager of one unit destined to use this? If so, what were problems you experienced? What would you have or did implement? Same if you were the manager of the shared team. Please assume, for discussion, that the people concerned know that you can't swap devs in and out on a whim. I don't want to know the disadvantages of this approach; I know them. I want to anticipate issues and know how to mitigate the fallout.

  I work on a Symfony 2 codebase. We use a number of third-party packages (most are in the Symfony Standard Edition). We use composer for dependencies. We current have all of our third-party code committed in our repository (after changing .gitignore files) to ensure stability. According to Proper Programming Practices™, we are not supposed to have any third-party packages in our repo. We are supposed to pull them down and include them at build time. How are we to do proper QA and debugging when at any given time our dependencies could push an update that breaks functionality?

  Software development is an area where parallel development to its fullest form is very difficult to achieve, although you could get reasonably close with the right design. This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order?   Currently we are testing various configurations between Feature Branching and CI with Feature toggling. I can see there are several viable options out there for the code, but I also know that CI totally relies on the possibility to merge the code. So I wonder, how do you manage CI with binary data, like art assets? I can also see another problem: all the code can be tested before to commit, I can even validate the data before to commit, but how can I test the art?! Should I use another methodology for art content?

• Shut down Netbook by closing lid - ubunti 13.10

  My wife has an Acer Aspire One (with the SSD Card and an SD expansion card). It has never been able to hibernate or suspend, always creating errors and occasionally trashing the data on the SD card, which is the home partition so it's unfortunate. To get around the problem I have set all exit methods to produce shutdown - she tends to simply shut the lid. I'm aware the default behaviour has for some time been to suspend, but I've got round that using the gnome tweak tool. However, I've just installed 13.10 and whilst I have installed the gnome tweak tool and set it to shut down the system appears to be ignoring/bypassing the setting, electing to suspend when the lid is shut. Can anyone tell me how to fix it please? I'm quite happy to get my hands dirty with the command line.

• Cannot resume from hibernate (s2disk)

  I seem to be able to hibernate OK using s2disk, but when I switch the laptop back on, it seems to hang half-way through the "resuming" menu. The splash screen looks healthy, it seems to be trying to resume from the correct disk, but it hangs about half-way through, with three little pips. One great help would be - where can I find the logs, and how do I get more verbose ones? There is some info in /var/log/pm-suspend.log, but that all seems fine, just lots of hibernate: success messages... How do I switch on more verbose logging in s2disk? And what about the resume process, where are the logs for that, and how can I make them more detailed? Background: the standard Ubuntu hibernate wouldn't work, so I've install uswusp and its associated tools - s2disk etc. That initially made things worse, but a fair amount of fiddling with its config, my swap size and so on seem to have got it at least seemingly successfully suspending...

• My Laptop Battery Does Not Charge

  I am using a HP Pavilion and Ubuntu 11.10. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year. Recently (in Nov or there about), I noticed my battery never charges fully no matter how long it has been plugged in. I thought it was a problem with the power pack. However, after changing it, the problem is still persisting. I upgraded to 11.10 form 11.04 at about the same time so I do not know if this is a software or hardware issue. How do I solve this? • How do you track Production tasks.

  I manage a team of coders (5people) that maintain a few modules in a large project. On top of doing coding, we also do production operational tasks (like doing server housekeeping, batch backlog tracking) These tasks are done daily, done by 1 person, and is rotated weekly The problem is this: These tasks are routine, but there I cant think of a practical way of ensuring the person does what he is supposed to do. I thought of using spreadsheets to track, or to the extent of doing a paper checklist, which the person on duty will have to physically sign off. I just want the guy on duty to remember and execute every daily item. What works on your project?

• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? • How to manage Agile developers working with traditional (serial) business persons?

  Good afternoon, My work environment has some problems. Our IT team is trying to be more agile, but we're not really getting buy-in from the business. They attend our daily stand-ups and sprint reviews, and they help with sprint planning, but then they turn around and do 4 months of requirements gathering for a project before moving forward with a (mostly) serial development style. The sprint goals are things like "get XX% closer to release". For the IT team, they've turned the Sprints into a sort of death march. We end a Sprint one day and start a new Sprint the very next day. There's no reflection or changes done between sprints, only during. Having never done any of the agile methodologies before, I haven't had a very pleasant introduction to them. So my questions are: 1) Should there be some time (perhaps a week or so) between sprints to do the reflection/introspection/changes/etc.? Or are back-to-back-to-back sprints the norm? 2) Is there any chance for survival for an agile team with no agile business counter-parts? If not, are there some transitional methodologies or even tips for moving the business towards an iterative if not necessarily agile mindset? 3) Should your entire team be on every sprint? We have almost 20 programmers on a single sprint but working on completely different projects (typically teams of 3-5, sometimes larger). Is it normal to have a single sprint or should we be trying to manage multiple independent sprints? Should we be trying to keep the multiple sprints in concurrent lockstep or should their timetables be allowed to overlap and be flexible? Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. This is my first time coming over from SO for a question, so please let me know if there are better ways to phrase these kinds of questions (faq was rather helpful, but still not sure I'm following it perfectly). The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). • 32 bit programs can't access Internet in Windows 7 64 bit

  I recently got a new ASUS laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. It worked OK for a while but a couple of days ago, suddenly I couldn't access the Internet any more. After narrowing down the problem, I've reached the conclusion that what's happened is that 32 bit programs are suddenly not able to use the Internet, but 64 bit applications work just fine. Examples of programs that DON'T work any more: Google chrome Firefox Internet Explorer 8 World of Warcraft Examples of programs that DO work: Internet Explorer 8 (64 bit) ping (command line) nslookup (command line) ftp (command line) I'm pretty sure that those command line apps are 64 bit native. A re-install of Windows using the recovery partition on the laptop did fix the problem temporarily, but now it's back again. And I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place getting someone to take the responsibility for this; the vendor says to talk to ASUS, ASUS says it's a software issue, and Microsoft doesn't give support on OEM licenses... Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

• Flash Retirement - HTML to be "the one"

As you might have read the support.oracle.com  flash site will be replaced with what you see in supporthtml.oracle.com,  once we get the rest of the features and functions ported over to the html site. • By what features and qualities are "free" and "premium" themes differentiated

  I have a lot of time invested in creating Wordpress templates. I want to release combinations of these templates along with different styles and Fancy Front pages as "Premium Wordpress Themes". What I need to know is what does "Premium" mean? What do people expect of a GPL theme vs. a Premium theme? Are there features that are considered required to be premium? Are there features that are in demand but considered "exceptional" i.e. not part of every premium theme? How can I tell the difference? I have heard tounge-in-cheek answers that say that any theme that makes money is premium, but I mean to ask about what gives an outstanding theme it's quality. Why is it worth more? I am technically able to do many things, but as a lone developer with a family to feed, I can't afford to spend time on features that no one cares about. I have to try to isolate the things that people want. This is serious food and rent to me. How can I get this kind of info so I can make my project successful?

  I am looking for an enterprise-grade service or a tool that can be used to scan / fingerprint websites and notify when major XHTML code changes are detected. The tool should be able to continuously scan thousands of websites and determine the percentage of HTML code that has been modified since the last run. And then either save the data where it can be easily accessed or send periodic notifications. I know of services like ChangeDetect.com, but they don't do markup only changes and instead focus on everything, including content. We don't really care about presentation content, because a lot of sites we need to cover are updated frequently with content.

• Apache mod_remoteip and access logs

  Since Apache 2.4 I've started using mod_remoteip instead of mod_extract_forwarded for rewriting client address from x-forwarded-for provided by frontend servers (varnish, squid, apache etc). So far everything works fine with the modules, i.e. php, cgi, wsgi etc... - client addresses are shown as they should be, but I couldn't write client address in access logs (%a, %h, %{c}a). No luck - I'm always getting 127.0.0.1 (localhost forward ex.). How to log client's ip address when using mod_remoteip?

  If you were looking into a job applicant's background and discovered that he or she has 1200 followers on Twitter and averages 50 tweets per day (more than half of which are during business hours), would it affect your hiring decision? How and why? Personally, I'd be a little worried about the candidate's ability to focus on the job at hand if they're constantly checking in with their 'tweeps' thoughout the day. In non-tech jobs, a lot of companies simply block Twitter as an irrelevant distraction. But it can be a useful resource---to programmers in particular. I just wonder how much is too much. At what point does it become a red flag?

• How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance.

• Unauthorized computer use via keyboard or remote access?

  I’m suspecting my computer is being used when I’m not at home. This is happening either physically or remotely. My wireless switch is off. Is there any way possible to detect and/or monitor activity without purchasing software? My settings are being changed as well as passwords (Bios PW was changed and I cannot access Bios settings). I connect via the network cable. Is it possible for someone (in range) to connect to my laptop even if the wireless switch is off? This is a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the WLAN 1395 card. Here’s the kicker. When I try to download freeware for monitoring activity, I am not allowed to do this! ????

• Why do exclusively outsourcing projects as a company?

  A prospective employer told me they took a company level decision to only do outsourcing projects. I do not understand why did they take such a decision and the guy I talked to did not elaborate. He further said only that "their intention is to build software components". Since they are growing quite fast and reached around 300 employees, shouldn't they be at least open to the possibility of having a project of their own, maybe? All other companies I've had contact with were at least open to have one in the future.. I talked to a few of their employees and some are working in parallel on more than 2 outsourced projects (dividing time something like 4 + 4 hours / day). It seemed like a lot of projects with a period of a few months, maybe half an year come and go... Why would a company choose to provide only outsourcing services like that? How does it work to keep hundreds of people on outsourced projects with a seemingly high project turnover rate?

• Won't Hibernate when Battery Critical

  Ubuntu 12.04 64bit refuses to hibernate when battery is critically low. Instead it does a complete shutdown which is unnecessary and can cause loss of data. I have enabled Hibernate (pm-hibernate) on following the common instructions I tested pm-hibernate it is works fine when run manually. I have set my power options to hibernate "When Power is Critically Low". This has also been verified by using dconf Editor. Under org gnome settings-daemon plugins power critical-battery-action it is set to "hibernate". Under the same schema, time-action is set to "120". I would like to see what is happening just prior to this shutdown. I would like to know what logs to search to see if pm-hibernate is actually failing, or if it is being ignored entirely. Barring figuring this out on my own, is there a suggested work around?
