• What does the caret operator in Python do?

  I ran across the caret operator in python today and trying it out, I got the following output: >>> 8^3 11 >>> 8^4 12 >>> 8^1 9 >>> 8^0 8 >>> 7^1 6 >>> 7^2 5 >>> 7^7 0 >>> 7^8 15 >>> 9^1 8 >>> 16^1 17 >>> 15^1 14 >>> It seems to be based on 8, so I'm guessing some sort of byte operation? I can't seem to find much about this searching sites other than it behaves oddly for floats, does anybody have a link to what this operator does or can you explain it here?

• Printing PDFs Server-side using Acrobat Reader from ASP.NET

  Hi, I have been presented with a problem which requires me to print PDF files from a server as part of an ASP.NET web service. The problem is further complicated by the fact that the PDF files I have to print can ONLY be printed using Adobe Reader (they were created using Adobe LiveCycle and have some strange protection in them). This piece of code seems to do the trick in the Visual Studio development web server, but doesn't do anything when the site's running in IIS. I'm assuming this is probably some sort of permissions issue!? I know this is a FAR from ideal thing to be trying to do, but I haven't really got much choice! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! • A detail question when applying genetic algorithm to traveling salesman

  I read various stuff on this and understand the principle and concepts involved, however, none of paper mentions the details of how to calculate the fitness of a chromosome (which represents a route) involving adjacent cities (in the chromosome) that are not directly connected by an edge (in the graph). For example, given a chromosome 1|3|2|8|4|5|6|7, in which each gene represents the index of a city on the graph/map, how do we calculate its fitness (i.e. the total sum of distances traveled) if, say, there is no direct edge/link between city 2 and 8. Do we follow some sort of greedy algorithm to work out a route between 2 and 8, and add the distance of this route to the total? This problem seems pretty common when applying GA to TSP. Anyone who's done it before please share your experience. Thanks.

  Hello. I am developing a site (ASP.Net based) that, besides other features enables the users to blog as well. I am thinking of integrating BlogEngine.Net to my portal. From whatever little I have analyzed, integrating at presentation layer will be far more challenging in comparison to doing so at business layer. That means (I guess) I will have to use the BlogEngine.Core.dll in my application. I am looking for some sort of approval from the community, complimented with suggested do's and dont's. BTW, I find the business layer a bit intimidating (complex) as I want some basic & necessary features only.

• 301 htaccess redirect: add segment to old URL's

  I'm trying to make sure old url's aren't broken after the site's URL structure has changed from this: http://www.domain.com/section/entry_name to this: http://www.domain.com/section/event_name/entry_name But to make it a bit more complex, I'm using the segments to sort entries, for example: http://www.domain.com/news/amazing_event/date/asc http://www.domain.com/videos/my_event/title/desc The new structure only effects one particular event (amazing_event) and should leave the other URL's alone. Where do I even begin to tackle this?   I've been trying for a couple of days now to learn UDK, but I seem to be stuck at making that leap to understanding how everything works together. I understand the syntax, that's all well and good, and I pretty much get how classes and .ini files interact. As for the API, I have the entire reference as pretty decent Doxygen-style HTML output. What I'm looking for is a sort of intermediate tutorial on game creation from scratch (as opposed to modding UT3 itself), more advanced than just learning language syntax, but not yet to the level of going through the API step by step. I'm looking for some guide to the structure of the internals - how GameInfo and PlayerController interact, where Pawn comes in, etc. - a way to visualize the big picture. Does anyone have a particular favorite intermediate-level tutorials (or set of tutorials) that they used when first learning UDK?

  I'm in the process of setting up a WCF Data Services web service and I'm trying to sort out the security configuration. Although there's quite a lot of documentation out there for configuring WCF security, a lot of it seems to be outmoded or does not apply to my scenario. Ultimately, I am planning on managing authorization of operations via change interceptors. Thus, all I really need is the simplest way to permit a client to pass credentials along with a request and to be able to authenticate those credentials against either AD or an ASP.NET membership provider (I'd much prefer the latter unless it makes things much more complicated). I'm intending to manage encryption at the transport level (i.e. HTTPS). I'm hoping that the eventual solution does not involve a huge web.config. Likewise, I'd much prefer to avoid writing custom code for the purpose of authentication.

• Box2d: Maximum possible linear velocity?

  I think I've configured Box2d to have some sort of maximum velocity for any body, but I'm not sure. I apply an impulse like (100000000, 100000000), and the body moves just as fast as (100, 100) - which is not that fast at all. My game is a top-down 2d. • Silverlight RIA Services. Query fails on large table but works with Where clause

  I have a somewhat large table, maybe 2000 rows by 50 columns. When using the most basic imaginable RIA implementation. Create one-table Model Create DomainService Drop datagrid onto MainPage.xaml Drop datasource onto datagrid Ctrl-F5 I get this error: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.DomainOperationException: Load operation faild for query. Value cannot be null. Error is much larger, but thats the beginning of it. The weird thing is that if I narrow the results down with a where clause on the GetQuery, it works fine. In fact six different querys which together result in all of the rows being called works fine also. So basically, I'm sure its not some sort of rogue row. Why do I get this "Value cannot be null" error if I query the whole table? Thanks

• Streaming input to System.Speech.Recognition.SpeechRecognitionEngine

  I am trying to do "streaming" speech recognition in C# from a TCP socket. The problem I am having is that SpeechRecognitionEngine.SetInputToAudioStream() seems to require a Stream of a defined length which can seek. Right now the only way I can think to make this work is to repeatedly run the recognizer on a MemoryStream as more input comes in. Here's some code to illustrate: SpeechRecognitionEngine appRecognizer = new SpeechRecognitionEngine(); System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo formatInfo = new System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo(8000, System.Speech.AudioFormat.AudioBitsPerSample.Sixteen, System.Speech.AudioFormat.AudioChannel.Mono); NetworkStream stream = new NetworkStream(socket,true); appRecognizer.SetInputToAudioStream(stream, formatInfo); // At the line above a "NotSupportedException" complaining that "This stream does not support seek operations." • GetWindowPlacement/SetWindowPlacement not working in WinForms for high DPI

  I've got a legacy WinForms app and I want to save the window position and size across sessions. I've been using GetWindowPlacement and SetWindowPlacement during the FormClosing and Load events. The problem I'm getting is that at higher DPI settings (Such as Medium, size at 125%) the sizes keep inflating. I'll call SetWindowPlacement on it with a certain size, but when GetWindowPlacement is called, those numbers come back 25% bigger, even though the window was the same size all along. The same sort of problem exists when saving the size of a resizable element within the form. Now this works fine if I create a new WinForms project: The size stays stable even when running at the higher DPI. I'm guessing there's some legacy setting in the bowels of the project or some arcane Form setting that's messing it up, but I can't find out where. I've called IsProcessDPIAware on both projects and both are true. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

  Documentation for java.lang.Error says: An Error is a subclass of Throwable that indicates serious problems that a reasonable application should not try to catch But as java.lang.Error is subclass of java.lang.Throwable I can catch this type of throwable. I understand why this is not good idea to catch this sort of exceptions. As far as I understand, if we decide to caught it, the catch handler should not allocate any memory by itself. Otherwise OutOfMemoryError will be thrown again. So, my question is: is there any real word scenarios when catching java.lang.OutOfMemoryError may be a good idea? if we catching java.lang.OutOfMemoryError how can we sure that catch handler doesn't allocate any memory by itself (any tools or best practicies)?   I'm looking for a good JavaScript tree / treegrid package. Now -- before you answer: It needs to be able to perform well with lots of nodes. Perhaps 1,000 sibling nodes. It needs to be able to draw to a usable state within 2 or 3 seconds with 1,000 nodes. It doesn't necessarily need to draw all 1,000 nodes at once -- if it supports some sort of "smart rendering" or fake scrolling. Beyond that, column resizing, drag and drop, inline editing would all be nice, although I could probably add that functionality myself. I've already tried dojo's tree and yahoo's YUI treeview. Both are too slow.

• WPF assign Z-Order of owned windows without changing focus.

  Hi, Due to OpenGL airspace issues I have several windows that are owned by the main window but look and act like controls. I also have some data readout/sort windows that show real-time data and need to be normal floating windows, also owned by the main window so that they remain floating above the main window even while operations are performed in the main window. The issue: I open a data readout window (normal window) and am watching data change. Then I click on a text box to enter a value in one of the windows that acts as a control due to airspace issues, and it becomes activated, covering up my data readout window. This is bad because the airspace window is supposed to act like it is part of the main window. I tried some tricks with Activation and Deactivation, and it looks ok but then editing the airspace window at all is impossible because WPF only lets me edit the activated window. How can I ask that normal data readout window to please stay above all other windows owned by the main window, but still let other windows receive focus?

• Are there alternatives to UltraWinGrid (for C#)?

  I've been using the Infragistics UltraWinGrid for a while in a C# project, and while it's very spiffy, it is sometimes a bit heavy to run (and editing it in Visual Studio can be hazardous). I'm looking for a lighter alternative. Looks (always a big plus with Infragistics) are not as important as functionality. Namely, I'm looking for a beefed up DataGridView which: has data binding (duh!) has lock control over editing allows for sub-tables on opening a row can have multiple headers to group columns together (say header 1 is composed of "Group A" and "Group B", and header 2 has various columns under each group) has sorting by column (and can sort numbers properly, even if it does not have a stock method at first) has filtering by column (perhaps the most demanding spec) à la UltraWinGrid/Excel (text field with a way to specify if the filter is equal, not equal, greater, lesser, starts with, ends with, etc). supports check box, text box or data bound list/combo box cells allows cells to be merged (not the control cells of course!) can have events bound to each row (say double click)

• Odd Drag and drag bug in nested attributes Rails

  I've got this weird bug when trying to use drag and drag for two models (one nested within another). I've a category model which has many apps. In my category index page, I tried use "content_tag_for" to sort categories and apps within each category. But for some odd reason only the first element has drag, drop enabled. I can drag and drop categories all I want, but I can't drag the app in the second category, just the first category. Copy and paste gets ridiculously hopeless with HAML, so here's a Pastie instead. I made a sample app on heroku for you to check out here. Drag and drag work for both category and app, so I'm guessing it has to do something with the ul or li. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

• How to automatically add SVN commit messages and revision numbering to java file?

  I'm working on an Apache Wicket project in Eclipse with Maven2 -- my SCM is Subversion. I've got Subclipse set up which I use to commit changes to the repository. I've seen several projects with nice headers containing the current revision number and at the bottom of the java source file there's a list of all the changes that have been committed to the file including the comments that were passed. Is there any way of achieving this sort of behaviour automatically? At work I'm using MKS which does this automatically but I am yet to figure out how to achieve this with SVN and Eclipse.

• How can I mark a group of changes/changesets in SVN, Hg, or Git

  I would like to mark an arbitrary group of commits/changesets with a label. Commit 1 *Mark 1 Commit 2 *Mark 2 Commit 3 Commit 4 *Mark 1 Commit 5 *Mark 2 The goal is to easily locate all the changes for a specific mark, and to have that grouping persisted in the VCS directly, as opposed to some outside system like a bug tracking system. The location and ordering of the marks needs to be arbitrary, and should be able to work with both committed/uncommitted and pushed/unpushed changes. In SVN the best way I know is to just edit the commit notes and add some sort of special text that you can search for e.g. "**Mark 1". Or just to make a fake edit and commit it and use its commit note to list all the included revisions. Is there a better solution for SVN? Are there equivalent or better solutions for Hg or Git?

  I am basically looking to bind a search query to a gridview which is nice, but this must be done by a users input query (sort of like a search function). I can get single values and rows returned, but how would I get it to search all columns in my database for the inputted values and return it? I am trying to work out how to grab the variable #XXX from a text file (css file) containing strings like hr { margin: 18px 0 17px; border-color: #ccc; } h1 a:hover, h2 a:hover, h3 a:hover { color: #001100; } Which I would like to return as ccc 777 The plan then is to throw this through sort and uniq and the end up with a defining colourscheme for the page. Basically, I can't work out how to go from matching /color:#...[...]/ to just printing out the wildcarded sections.

• Creating a user-defined code generation system in PHP

  My newest project that I'm looking to build with CodeIgniter would require some sort of system that would allow a user to drag and drop pre-defined functions/methods into mini-classes/objects and then run/test them in the browser. So it'd something similar to Scratch. I've designed a relational database that I think could work for this (storing the function names and have these classes "subscribe" to those functions) - but I'm wondering whether or not to go ahead with it. Is there a better way to do this or is there a system out there that would accomplish this for me? EDIT: It would have to be extremely simple for an end user, but hopefully be flexible enough to easily add more complex functionality in the future.
