Now I am moving into an IT group and need to ramp up on CM practices from that standpoint. Are there any good references (books, websites, blogs whatever) out there comparing Software CM practices to IT CM practices? Basically I'm in learning mode and am trying compare things I already know from the software development side to things on the IT side.

• Xenserver boot error

  I'm trying to get Xenserver 5.5 running on a spare computer here, hardware specs: Intel Q6600, 4GB Ram, and Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard Xenserver itself installs fine onto a 150GB sata hdd, however it fails to boot whatsoever, giving this garbled mess: http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/9918/biosi.jpg it's not frozen because if I press enter it just prints a different garble and it also says "could not find kernel image". The strangest thing is if I put that hdd in my desktop and assign it to a VMWare desktop vm (under the ESX profile no less) it boots perfectly... leading me to believe there are no problems with the install or the hdd itself. From what I can tell the error seems to be occuring completely seperately to Xenserver, in the bootloader extlinux?. If there was a motherboard compatibility issue I would think it would also have manifested during installation, and the fact the problem seems to be with the booting into Xen makes me doubt this. Any ideas guys? (I'm using Xen because it can do PCI passthrough without VT-d.)

• DNS problems with Google on Windows 7

  Hello dear superuser community. I had no idea where to post this because it is a problem that completely baffles me. I have a lot of experience with network configuration, but I am completely out of ideas on how to fix this. I have a Fritz!Box branded router on my ISP 1&1 in Germany. My computer is connected to it with a normal Ethernet cable. I always manually set my IP on the computer and use the Google DNS servers for name resolution. I also tried OpenDNS and the result is the same. With that configuration the following happens: Google search responds with big delay Gmail, Google Calendar & Google Drive requests time out the majority of the time In order to troubleshoot, I set the network connection to DHCP for both IP & DNS. At that point, what happens is the following: Google search times out most of the time Gmail, Google Calendar & Google Drive work most of the time Sometimes, it happens that the sites that time out will come up, but weirdly enough, the pictures on the buttons will be missing. For instance, the magnifying glass on Google will be gone or the circle arrow on Gmail (but all buttons of course). All other websites load just fine - and very quickly. All other network functionality is completely unimpacted. The behaviour of fixed IP & Google DNS vs automatic IP & DNS is easily reproducible. I am going crazy trying to fix this as I have no idea what the hell is going on at this point. Here a list of the things I have tried thus far: Flushed the DNS Tried on different browsers (Works fine on my laptop by the way) Tried disabling Teredo & IPv6 stack Emptied all caches Checked the HOSTS file Rebooted the router Reset the router Reinstalled the network adapter Tracert displayes normal route until timing out at one point Ping usually doesn't work for the unreachable sites either Ran both complete Norton 360 & Kaspersky 2012 scan Ran Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool in safe mode Tried connection in safe mode & networking enabled If you have any ideas, please let me know. I'm getting desperate...

• Inexpensive and Open replacement for Cisco Tunnel-based EasyVPN with Cisco VPN 3000 Series

  I have a scenario when i have to establish peer-to-peer preshared key based VPN to a vendor. This vendor uses Cisco EasyVPN with Cisco VPN 3000 as access concentrator. I check the compatibility of the type of VPN from http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6586/ps6635/ps7180/prod_brochure0900aecd80582078.pdf and it appears that it would only work on cisco hardware. I am looking for a less inexpensive and possibly and open replacement to this to save my cost and also recommend to them. I have tried OpenVPN and thinking about vyatta.

• Cannot run a VM with more than three network interfaces with KVM

  I'm running KVM on top of Ubuntu 10.10 Server I can create VM's (Virtual Machine) and network interfaces fine but I cannot seem to add more than three network interfaces. As soon as I have a VM with four network interfaces it gets stuck on startup at the starting SeaBIOS page with this message: Starting SeaBIOS (version pre-0.6.1-20100702_143500-palmer) So far I've verified this with two VM's, a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Vyatta router. The specific network hardware I assign to the VM's doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying to have one bridged interface and three private networks using Vyatta to route between them. Does anyone know why I can't run a VM with more than three network interfaces? Edit: Additionally the KVM thread responsible for the specific VM hangs using ~100% CPU (i.e. one core). • Edirol UA-25 driver on Windows 8 Preview

  I've installed Windows 8 developer preview on a laptop and everything is working apart from my external sound card. The sound card in question is this one, and I've tried downloading and installing the Window 7 drivers from here but no joy so far. As per the instructions I remove the USB cable from the port. I then run setup.exe and (which I have set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode). It starts doing it's stuff then says "Please insert the USB cable and wait"......that's where things stop! Nothing happens. I don't even here the "ding-dong" of the USB device being recoginised. Obviously I realise that the drivers are for windows 7 and not 8, but was hoping that someone would be able to crowbar it to work!!! Any tips appreciated. Thanks

  Which unix like environment do you prefer on Windows? I have found Cygwin to be very comfortable for a windows platform (usually XP). I am wondering if there is a better alternative (not because I want to move away from Cygwin). What are the features of Cygwin that you like OR, What are features you find in alternatives that you miss in Cygwin? I am often miss binary compatibility of applications built on Cygwin. These cannot be run directly on another Windows platform. But, usually fetching a copy of cygwin1.dll suffices. A collection of other tools many of which work directly on the Windows subsystem rather than emulating unix, like Cygwin does. Have been referred PowerShell a lot of times for scripting on Windows Earlier, UnixUtils was suggested more often Microsoft Windows Services for Unix

• OS X Snow Leopard stops processing clicks from Wacom Intuous2

  I'm using a Wacom Intuos2 graphics tablet in OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, which works great, 80% of the time. Every 20 minutes or so, OS X to just start ignoring input from the pen. More specifically, only the pen tip is ignored - the side buttons on the pen still work. Putting the Mac to sleep and waking it back up restores functionality to the pen tip. This is using both of the latest Wacom drivers claiming compatibility with Snow Leopard: versions 6.1.2-5 (Nov 25, 2009) and 6.1.3-3 (Jan 21, 2010). I have no experience with this tablet with other version of OS X / drivers. The tablet works 100% in Windows, which leads to blame either OS X or the OS X drivers.

On the drive I have set aside for WSS, I'm fast running out of space due to the ShareWebDb_log.ldf file: I've tried doing to do what I've read online - change the recovery mode, backup and truncate - but I can't actually see how I do this via the SQL Server Management Studio tool. Can anyone shed any light? The database for this file does not show in the list, and I cannot expand Management SQL Server Logs (because it's too large?).

• Low framerate on background apps

  My problem is that when a game is running in the foreground, in Full Screen mode, any applications on my second monitor (such as youtube videos, videos, not app specific) drop their frame-rate to about 2-3 FPS. It seems like some sort of power management option that I can't track down. As far as I can tell, it's not due to the GPU not being able to keep up. For instance, my PC can play League of Legends at about 280FPS when the framerate is uncapped. • Issues getting a Cisco WLC 5508 to find AIR-LAP1142N

  hoping someone can help me with a problem here. I'm attempting to setup a test (loan from Cisco) wireless network. Here's what i've got/done: 5508 Controller - Service Port IP set to 10.74.5.2 /24. Management IP set to 10.74.6.2 /24 with a default gateway of 10.74.6.1. Virtual IP set to 1.1.1.1. Copper SFP in slot 7, CAT5 (known good) going from there to port 1/0/47 on the switch. Green lights on both ends. 2960-S Switch - Vlan1 - 10.74.6.1 /24. dhcp pool 10.74.6.0 /24, default router 10.74.6.1. excluded-address 10.74.6.1, 10.74.6.2. 1/0/4 on the switch is set to switchport mode access and no shut. 1/0/47 on the switch is setup to switchport mode trunk and no shut. 1/0/4 has a CAT5 (known good) cable going from there to the AP. When I do a sh cdp nei from the switch, i can see the AP and Controller listed. When i configure my PC's nic to 10.74.5.5, and plug a cable from my nic to the SP port on the controller i can get on the device via the gui. In there, the only errors/info that show up in the trap are: Link Up: Slot: 0 Port: 7 Controller time base status - Controller is out of sync with the central timebase. I've manually set the time but apparently that's not quite the problem (or at least not the entire problem). When i plug the AP in, i see on the switch console that it grants it power, it sees it connect...but the controller won't see it for some reason. From what i've read you shouldn't have to do anything to the AP as it's managed by the controller...but i'm not sure what setting I'm missing for it to work. The AP light on top is continually cycling green, red, yellow. When I first start it up, it blinks green for 20 or so seconds, then goes to solid green for another 20 seconds or so, then flashes blue, green, red for awhile...but always ends up goinn back to the standard, green, red, yellow. Does anyone see any obvious issues with my setup or have any suggestions as to why i might be having a problem? Thanks for your help!

  GNU Emacs 23.1.1 I've noticed that if I run Emacs and M-x server-start, I can use the emacsclient program as usual, but if if I start Emacs using emacs --daemon and then try to use emacsclient the new frame locks up and the shell outputs *ERROR*: Arithmetic error. This issue doesn't happen if I use the -t flag to force terminal mode when running emacsclient. Has anyone run into this before? Anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix it?

• Burn DVD mastered format DVD+R

  Using windows Vista, can I write DVD+R discs using mastered format? I've followed the instructions here But when I get to step 6, it gives an error "There was an error burning this disc. The disc might no longer be usable" There are no dollar signs in my files or extensions, and I have plenty of free space on my HD. I can successfully make a data disc using "live" format. Unfortunately my colleges home (XP) PC is unable to read it, despite the fact that it works on other XP machines at work... so I thought I'd try making a mastered one for greater compatibility. Any ideas?

  We need to build a new web server for our organization. We have around 100 hundred small traffic web sites, so our hardware requirements are not too tough. We run CentOS 6, Varnish+Apache, PHP, MySQL, Typo3 CMS for most of websites. Here's a hardware we want to buy: SuperMicro X9SCA-F-O (we need to have a remote management capability) (or better X9SCM-F?) Intel Xeon E3-1220 v2 2*4Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston ECC (KVR16E11/4) (currently we have 4gb, and it feels like enough, so no reason for 16gb yet). Procase EB140-B-0 (1 unit) PSU 350W Procase MG1350, Active PFC We already have: Intel 335 120GB SSD (for OS, databases and important websites). 2*2tb WD Green RAID1 (for other data and backups). Does it look like a reasonable choice for our needs? Any issues with hardware compatibility? Any other notes?

  Hello, I am looking for a solution on a LAMP server to keep a site cookieless such as "example.com", where static content is served from "static.example.com", and with rules in place to rewrite requests for "www.example.com" to "example.com". I am really hoping to avoid setting up a cookieless domain for the static content due to an unanswered SEO concern with regards to CNAMEing to a CDN. Is there a way, (or safe hack), that can be implemented where a second domain such as "www.example2.com" is CNAMEd, aliased, or otherwise used with "example.com" to somehow trick a php application into maintaining state with a cookie dropped on "www.example2.com" therefore keeping all of "example.com" cookieless? If such a solution is feasible, what implications would exists with regards to SSL and cross-browser compatibility other than requiring users to accept cookies from 3rd party domains and possibly needing an additional SSL to keep the cookie secure? • OpenVPN, Great on Windows, VERY slow on Mac...

  Hello, I'm not really an IT Pro, but this seemed like the best place to ask this question... I have setup VPN networks in the past, for fun, and everything was great, but now I've set one up for my boss, and while my computers all work great, his Mac machines are almost too slow to work with. Its pretty much vanilla configs all around, anyone have any ideas? Its a TUN routing setup over UDP. Back Story: My boss travels a lot, and wants to be able to access all his files from the road, and is also pretty paranoid about security (even though knows almost nothing about computers). SO i figured a VPN would be the answer. I went with OpenVPN, but there are some other issues. The only ISP we can get in our area besides Dial-UP is a crappy Satellite provider, that doesn't offer public IPs unless your willing to pay, so while the computers and VPN setup are pretty vanilla, the routing and structure is strange to get around this limitation. Specs: Its OpenVPN2, and there are six machines using it (only three actually use it, the rest are my test machines), one Windows 7 laptop, two XP Desktops, one OS X 10.5 Desktop, one 10.6 Desktop, and one 10.6 Laptop. One XP Desktop sits at my house and acts as the server (6Mbs/2Mbs FIOS connection). One XP desktop sits at the office and hosts a webpage that will wake up the Main Mac Desktop from sleep, and also ping all the machines on the VPN and show their status. The main office mac (10.6) stays in sleep mode until it gets the Wake-On-Lan packet from the Office XP, and then it auto connects to the VPN and opens itself up. The reason for all this is the Satellite private IP crap means i cant directly access the office machines outside of the LAN, so everyone connects to my house first, then they talk to each other from there. The Wake On Lan weirdness is because my boss doesn't want to leave the main Mac on all the time, and making a quick and dirty webpage was the easiest way to send a Magic Packet from inside the LAN without confusing my boss. The VPN uses Client Config files to make static IPs for the client. The only thing i found in google was some changes to the VPN MTU settings (down to 1400) but no real help. Oh, and i forgot...all the windows machines just have OpenVPN start as a service. The Mac laptop uses tunnelblick (an OpenVPN GUI) and the Mac Desktops use OpenVPN in normal command line mode. • 8GB, but have to run Windows Xp (32 Bit). Anything I can do with the additional memory?

  I ordered a new computer with 8GB RAM with the plan to run Windows 7, 64Bit. Turns out now, that I need to run a 32Bit OS (XP or 7) due to some software which does not run on 64Bit yet (not even with any of the available compatibility settings / modes). Is there anything I can do with the memory above 4GB in this scenario? I'm willing to consider creative solutions like running a hypervisor under XP that offers the memory as a RAM-Disk for swapping etc. ? The software that does not run on 64Bit is CISCO VPN (there seems to be a half-working solution for that) and CISCO IP phone / webcam integration "CISCO Unified Video Advantage" (there is apparently no solution for that).

• How can I connect DLNA devices through NAT?

  I have a Windows 7 PC running Serviio as a DLNA server. I have a Samsung I9100G running Skifta as a DLNA renderer (client). My network topology: At the moment, I can connect and watch my videos fine if the phone is on router #2. The server is on a wired network with #2. Router #1 is 192.168.1.1, router #2 is 192.168.2.1 (192.168.1.2) and router #3 is 192.168.3.1 (192.168.1.3). In other words, each router has its own subnet, using NAT - their "modem" port is connected with a "LAN" port on the modem/router 1. What I want to do is be able to connect to the DLNA server if the renderer is connected to router #1/#3 - #1 is on the WAN side of #2, while #3 is even further separated. I'll settle for just #1 working, though. Normally, I would just forward the appropriate ports, and everything would work fine. However, (apparently) DLNA uses UPnP, which I am unfamiliar with. I tried enabling UPnP on router #2, but that did not seem not change anything. It's a Belkin F5D7230-4 6000 - there's reported issues with UPnP on F5D7230-4 7000. UPnP is already enabled on router #1 - a Billion BiPAC 7700N. I've also tried the built in DLNA renderer/server/controller on my phone, Samsung AllShare. It can see the server on router #2 and browse files, but has issues playing or downloading them. It also can't see the server on the other two networks. I'm currently using Skifta/s "local" mode. "Remote" mode requires an account, which I don't really want to create if not necessary. Is it possible too do what I'm trying to do? If no, are there workarounds? If yes, how do I do it? Is my server the issue? The renderer (client)? The router(s)? My method? I can change just about anything except the routers.

  I'm getting an error message: "unsupported compression method 98" when unzipping a file somebody sent to me. I've tried both an older version of WinZip, and 7-Zip 4.65. I've already asked the person to avoid using a non-standard compression method and re-send the file. I know WinZip (of which they are using a newer version) has compatibility options. But, I'm wondering: What archiving utilities, other than WinZip, support this "compression method 98"? In particular, is there a free and/or open source tool that supports that method? If not, why not? Is the method strictly proprietary to WinZip?

• Capture traffic from SPAN and send it to a HyperV VM

  On a Server 2008 SP2 HyperV VM, I am trying to capture traffic from a SPAN. I know the SPAN is working, as I am able to capture the traffic on the Host OS, but when I try and capture traffic on the VM, with the SPAN being sent to a virtual adapter, I cannot seem to get it to work-- After doing some Googling, I have found that it might be because HyperV NICs cannot be put into promiscuous mode. (?) Any other thoughts? -Josh

• Is it possible to have a computer run two OS's in memory at the same time?

  I'm sick of needing to reboot my computer every time I wish to use another OS, or run a virtual machine that skimps on power. With the onset of large amounts of memory for computers nowadays I began to think that there must be some way to run two OS's in memory with a way to switch between the two. In my mind, it doesn't seem too difficult; a compatibility layer boots up after bios, which in turn boots to OS1. While in OS1, software is run that triggers a save to ram boots back to the compatability layer, and then boots to OS2. This way, the OS's can be used side by side and boot times are cut drastically short since both OSs are already in ram. Both OS's have their own designated and protected memory so there is no problem there... I mean, it seems fine, but no one has done it, so there must be some reason as to why. I would love some insight into this please.
