• Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?

  I wanted to build a single PC to fit all my needs, but since hardware virtualization support (Vt-d specifically) is a huge problem, I decided to build multiple single-use oriented computers. In this scenario I want these computers to be as minimal as possible. So the core of my question is: "Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?" I'm considering Sandy-Bridge i7 or i5 for my "game console" computer. And since I will use only one graphic card, one or two HDD, 4-8GB RAM and nothing else, I would be fine with a micro-ATX board with a Q67 (or some other low-end chipset).

• How can I dual install Ubuntu 10.4 in a Mac Mini with 10.4.11?

  I'd like to power-up my aging Mac Mini (1.5GHz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, Tiger 10.4.11) by installing a shiny Ubuntu alongside the current OS. After all, I use Ubuntu for everything save for cleaning my teeth. Since it's my first and only Mac and I have next to no experience with the OS (having used it basically as a media player) I am a little concerned about rEFIt, ELILO, Boot Camp and the fact that it's basically a 4.5 years old unsupported machine and I might get asleep reinstalling everything several times. I've used the live desktop-i386 CD and everything works. I tried with an external USB drive instead of a CD but couldn't make it boot. As for installing Ubuntu, the howtos I've found give several alternatives depending on the model, the OSX version, etc.. but they usually talk about newer machines. Which howto should I follow to repartition, and boot thereafter? Thanks

  My server performance is poor. At times SSH, top, and other features or commands are very slow to respond, taking several seconds or more. A query that normally takes 5 minutes can sometimes take 30 minutes. The database is mostly being used to do a spatial query (grid and summarize) on approximately 500GB of stored data spread between 4 tables. Restarting the server works as a temporary fix, but cannot be used as a long term solution. Any suggestions for how to diagnose and solve my performance issues? • Computer won't start unless power is removed for ~5 minutes

  I have a fairly standard 2-year old desktop computer (quad-core intel, single hard drive, decent video card, 300W power supply) which recently started acting up. I'm not sure what the cause is, so hopefully you can help. Sometimes (once a week-ish) I press the power button and nothing happens. No blinking, no sounds, no nothing. If I remove the power cord (or flip the switch on the power supply) I hear a capacitor discharge. If I leave it in the "no power at all" state for about 5 minutes then I can put the plug back in and the computer works perfectly. What is the issue? What do you think I have to replace?

  I have a MacBook Pro with the 2.4 Core 2 Duo and 4 GB RAM. I want to run Windows 7 for ASP.NET development within VMWare Fusion. Since I may be doing some SharePoint 2010 work I was thinking that my install of Windows 7 would need to be the 64 bit version because SharePoint 2010 requires 64 bit Windows. As I am new to Mac OS (I am running v10.6.3) I am not sure if it would support a 64 bit OS in a Virtual Machine. Thoughts?

• Memory compatibility?

  I'm in the process of building a PC intended mostly for gaming and I've got a few questions. Currently, I only have the motherboard and CPU: Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 My main question is about memory compatibility. I have 4 Hynix 2GB HMT125U7BFR8C-G7 with light-moderate use laying around and I'd love to save a few bucks if I can. I've read that this is server memory... a) Will that be a problem for PC use? b) Is it compatible with the motherboard? I've emailed Hynix and checked Crucial to no avail. If incompatible, what memory would be a good fit given the components I have? The motherboard has 4 sockets and supports up to 32GB, but I don't know that I have the budget for that at the moment. • What affects video encoding speeds?

  FRAPs doesn't compress its videos when you record, so the files are enormous. In a long recording you can get up to a few hundred gigabytes. Obviously, usually you would need to convert/compress them. What affects the speed of this? I don't think the RAM does, as when I converted 600 gb my RAM usage only went to 6 gig, but the processor was at 100%, which is surprising as I have a 6 core processor @ 3.46 ghz. Would clock speed or cores help the most?

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some repetition in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . It is a small company with a similar small server-environment, so the need for a huge, complex and expensive solution isn’t there but a more “straight-forward” firewall, that can provide the necessary security to our systems and block unwanted elements from the core server and only accept access through our one server which is used as an “gateway” between the Internet and our internal network.   I was on all the builds of the Mavericks beta and connecting to my University's network was fine. Then I upgraded to the public release and now I can't seem to connect to the internet. I can connect to other networks, but not my schools. Its a WPA2 network with a User Authentication. And my MacBook is a 2011? 2.2 GHz first gen i7 Quad Core with 8 GBs of RAM. • System freezes for 5 seconds when seeking in or skipping to songs and videos

  When I start playing a new video or MP3 or skip to a time when playing them, my system hangs for a couple of seconds. A restart solves this problem, but only for a while. It does not matter which player I use (VLC, Media Player, Winamp, Zoom Player), which media files or if they are located on a network drive or on the local hard drive. Everything else works flawlessly and after the playing has started, there are not problems - until I switch to another file. Additionally, when the Winamp playlist continues to the next song, the system does not hang. When I skip to the next song manually, the system hangs. I've been using Windows XP for years and consider myself a fairly professional windows user, but I have no idea what could cause this. Dual-core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP3, Audigy card with kxproject. Worked flawlessly for years. Would be glad if anyone could help.

Can I buy a motherboard/PSU to fit that case? Can I choose a CPU fan? What are my battery options? Obviously taking into consideration the case.   Hi, I have a server that after the first configuration it was DHCP, now I have added it to our domain and in a static IP, however after a few moments it returns to DHCP but with only some of the IPv4 setting staying the same, It loses DNS for example.   I'm attempting to build a system for co-location. I've been running into issues while trying to install CentOS 6.3 System Specs: Motherboard: ASUS m5a99x Process: AMD FX-8120 (8-core Bulldozer) Memory: 2x 4gb G-Skill 2133 running at 1600 I keeps giving me an error message: CPU1: Not Responding. CPU2: Not Responding. CPU3: Not Responding. CPU4: Not Responding. CPU5: Not Responding. CPU6: Not Responding. Then it instantly restarts. I have tried installing it from USB, Multiple DVDs, Multiple Distros. I have also in the bios attempted to disable cores. I was able to disable 2/3 4/5 6/7. I have also ensured that there is zero overclocking. The system works fine in a windows environment. I'm out of ideas.

  Is there anyway to lock the command prompt? I need my computer to require a password to use the command prompt. I lock the workstation occasionally but sometimes I forget and if I could just prevent my roommate from doing the "c: net user user *" to change my password it would be great. I do not want to have to use the rundll.32 user command with script to automatically lock the computer. Just a way to lock the c prompt. • AMD Processors and the Windows Phone 8 Emulator

  I would madly appreciate it if anyone in this community would help me with my question. The background is that I want to develop Windows Phone 8 applications but both of my current computer processors do not have Hardware Virtualization & Second Level Address Translation that are needed to run the Emulator. I have my eyes on an AMD computer g7-2243us (I like it because it has 1600x900 screen res). I looked up this Link that shows that this computer's AMD processor (Next Gen AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated 1.9GHz up to 2.8GHz 4MB L2 Cache Processor) supports AMD-V Hardware Virtualization.   I have set of two Lenovo laptops on which Fedora core 13 is installed. On one machine, the monitor is detected properly such that it is possible to connect another monitor. But on another laptop, the monitor is shown as unknown monitor. I tried to fix it by reinstalling xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686. But the problem remains same (unknown monitor) and it is not possible to connect another monitor with this setting. Laptop model: Lenovo G460. Graphics card: Intel Graphics Media accelerator HD.   One of our web-projects was hacked. Malefactor changed some template files in project and 1 core file of the web-framework (it's one of the famous php-frameworks). We found all corrupted files by git and reverted them. So now I need to find the weak point. With high probability we can say, that it's not the ftp or ssh password abduction. The support specialist of hosting provider (after logs analysis) said that it was the security hole in our code. My questions: 1) What tools should I use, to review access and error logs of Apache? (Our server distro is Debian). 2) Can you write tips of suspicious lines detection in logs? Maybe tutorials or primers of some useful regexps or techniques? 3) How to separate "normal user behavior" from suspicious in logs. 4) Is there any way to preventing attacks in Apache?   I have a freshly installed instance of Fedora Core 16 inside VirtualBox using bridged networking. On it, as root I typed in: yum -y install httpd service httpd start ifconfig Inside the VM, I can open a web browser to 'localhost' and I get the Apache test page. It works. But in Windows (the machine hosting the VM), I point my browser to the IP address returned by ifconfig (192.168.2.122). The connection times out. I can go to a command prompt and ping the VM. Is there a firewall or something that comes with Fedora by default? Or is there something I need to change in a config file?

  I have an Acer Aspire X1200 (specs link below) desktop computer that I've installed Boxee on and it works great. And it looks like it's going to be a perfect computer for a media player.   i am having a server with 16 virtual core and 24G RAM,using Xen virtualization and ubuntu as dom0 Created 4 VMs (in para mode),each with different applications. CPU Load vary on each vm,somtimes first vm reaches nearly 100% CPU and others under 25% or even less. So is there a way in which vm can get cpu from other vms when they are not actually using it or utilization is under 25%.Same in the case of RAM also. I am not sure whether i am mentioning Cloud here. Initially i would like to give every vm a single VCPU,but can scale up to 8 or more by taking cpu from other vms if they are not using it. Is there any kind of tool that makes vm to scale its resources when demand increases. Is cloudstack and openstack designed for these kind of purpose or is that just a GUI to manage VMs.
