• SQL Server Error 26 (Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Only When Debugging

  I have a simple asp .net web project I'm working on, and while normally everything is going fine, if I try to debug the site, I get "SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified". I'm not sure if its a weird code issue or a weird SQL Server Issue, but here are the system specs anyway. My dev machine is Windows 7 32-bit, and a Windows Server 2008 VM (on the same Windows 7 Machine) runs both IIS and SQL Server 2008 Express. I haven't had any other problems with the connection string I'm using, and I'm using the simple SA account. Anyhow, thanks for the help.

Could you please explain what is Repetitive SQL? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2657459/sql-code-smells I thought to make it a new post as it is a different subject. The reply says that use of "multiple stored procedures that perform the exact same joins but different filters" can be avoided using VIEWs. • How can I force a subscriber to be synchronized from a local snapshot?

  Hello, I have a SQL 2005 server replicating(merge\push) to SQL 2005 and SQL 2000 servers. I have multiple subscribers spread througout the United states. I have set , @snapshot_in_defaultfolder = N'false', @alt_snapshot_folder = N'c:\snapshots\Merge\' (sample location). I take the snapshot from the publisher that is in the same location, 'c:\snapshots\Merge\', and copy it to the subscribers. I wanted to avoid applying the snapshot over the WAN but from the performance I am getting the synchronization is going over the WAN. Does anybody have any ideas how to make sure that I am using the local copy of the snapshot and not the copy at the publisher? Thanks

  I am using SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Studio and struggling with returning an integer value from a very simple execute SQL Task. For a very simple test, I wrote the SQL Statement as: Select 35 As 'TotalRecords' Then, I specified ResultSet as ResultName = TotalRecords and VariableName = User::TotalRecords When I execute this, the statement is executed but the variable doesn't have the updated value. However, it has the default value that I specified while variable definition. The return of a date variable works, but integer variable isn't working. The type of User::TotalRecords specified is Int32 in a package scope. Thanks for any hints

  Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but here I go. I'm working on a project as a student for my internship and I need help. I have a masterPage with horizontal menu items as shown in the attached screen-captured. What I want to achieved is: Have a default image and description from SQL server database When a user mouse-over the menu item, display an image from a SQL server database and it description based on the mouse-over menu item. When user mouse-out, display default image and description from sql database. I have a also created user interface for inserting images to the database.   I occasionally hear things about how SQL sucks and it's not a good language, but I never really hear much about alternatives to it. So, are other good languages that serve the same purpose (database access) and what makes them better than SQL? Are there any good databases that use this alternative language? EDIT: I'm familiar with SQL and use it all the time. I don't have a problem with it, I'm just interested in any alternatives that might exist, and why people like them better. I'm also not looking for alternative kinds of databases (the NoSQL movement), just different ways of accessing databases.

• SQL server connection trouble in network but not in local

  for the first time that I would work with SQL SERVER 2005, the jdbc connection doesn't work in the network I searched and have done thousand of things that doesn't work, i also want to precise that i already had worked with other DBMS, so here is the problem: when i try to connect by jdbc from the machine where sql server is installed everything work just fine, but when i try from a different machine, the jdbc is unable to create the connection, i already checked that TCP/IP communication is enabled that the port (not dynamically assigned) is 1433 and i even tried with different ports, i also tried with the same driver and different driver, i checked that i was able to communicate with the http server (who is installed in the machine where SQL server is installed) and it works but that jdbc connection can't, i tried thousand of things until i forgot some of them, someone please help

• Return segmented average from SQL Query?

  Hi, I measure the load on DNS servers every minute and store that into an SQL DB. I want to draw a chart of the load for the last 48 hours. That's 69120 (48*24*60) data points but my chart's only 800 pixels wide so to make things faster I would like my SQL query to return only ~800 data points. It's seems to me like a pretty standard thing to do, but I've been searching the web and in books for such a thing for a while now and the closest I was able to find was a rolling average. What I'm looking for a more of a "segmented average": divide the 69120 data points in ~800 segments, then average each segment. My SQL table is: CREATE TABLE measurements ( ip int, measurement_time int, queries int, query_time float ) My query looks like this SELECT ip, queries FROM measurements WHERE measurement_time>(time()-172800) Thanks a lot!

  TEXT, NTEXT and IMAGE have been deprecated a long time ago and will, eventually, be removed from SQL Server. However, they are not going to be discontinued right away, not even in the next version of SQL Server, so it's not convenient for my enterprise to transform thousands of columns right away, even if it is using SQL Server 2012. What arguments can I use to postpone this migration? I know there are some advantages in using the new types. But I'm strictly looking for reasons not to migrate my data that is already functioning pretty well in the old types.

  I'm developing an iOS application that's a manager/viewer for another project. The idea is the app will be able to process the data stored in a database into a number of visualizations-- the overall effect being similar to cacti. I'm making the visualizations fully user-configurable: the user defines what she wants to see and adds restrictions. She might specify, for instance, to graph a metric over the last three weeks with user accounts that are currently active and aren't based in the United States. My problem is that the only design I can think of is more or less passing direct SQL from the iOS app to the backend server to be executed against the database. I know it's bad practice and everything should be written in terms of stored procedures. But how else do I maintain enough flexiblity to keep fully user-defined queries? While the application does compose the SQL, direct SQL is never visible or injectable by the user. That's all abstracted away in UIDateTimeChoosers, UIPickerViews, and the like.

The data is being updated once a day (nightly). I would like to pre-generate the data for the said view to speed up the page access. For that I am creating a table that contains exact data I need. Question: for my situation, is it reasonable to do complete table wipe followed by insert? or should I do update,insert?   Hello, SQL is not one of my strong suits. I have a SQL Server 2008 database. This database has a stored procedure that takes in eight int parameters. For the sake of keeping this question focused, I will use one of these parameters for reference: @isActive int Each of these int parameters will be -1, 0, or 1. -1 means "Unknown" or "Don't Care". Basically, I need to query a table such that if the int parameter is NOT -1, I need to consider it in my WHERE clause. Because there are eight int parameters, an IF-ELSE statement does not seem like a good idea. At the same time, I do not know how else to do this? Is there an elegant way in SQL to add a WHERE conditional if a parameter does NOT equal a value? Thank you!

  Is it possible to write a linq-to-sql statement that will return two different COUNTs that have been put into a single dataset using UNION ALL? I know this is syntactically wrong but here's what I'm trying to do: (from t1 in TableOne select t1).Count().Union( (from t2 in TableTwo select t2).Count() ) Here's the sql I would like would like to have generated: select count(*) from TableOne union all select count(*) from TableTwo I realize that Count() returns an int and does not have a Union method on it and therein lies my question. Can Linq-to-Sql be written that will achieve what I'm after?

• References/walkthroughs for maintaining database schemas with Visual Studio 2010?

  I have Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 and SQL Server 2008 installed. I'm working with a populated database and want to modify various column types. SQL Server Management Studio requires me to drop tables to do this, and get pretty finicky given my moderate level of knowledge of SQL Server. However, I heard the new database project type supports changing the database schema to the desired format and it will handle creating and running all the scripts to implement the changes. I've created a VS2010 database project using the existing database as the source, but so far haven't had much luck figuring out the appropriate method to make the changes without getting an error. As a result, I'm looking for any reference info I can find on using VS2010's capabilities in this area. Any suggestions?

Note: I am aware of IDENTITY inserts in SQL Server - and that is not what I am looking for this in particular case. Specifically, I don't want to be inserting/deleting rows. This is basically to have a central table that manages the sequential number generator for a bunch of sequences.

  Is it possible to exclude a column from a select * from table statement with SQL Server? I have a need for this and this is my only option other than parsing a raw SQL string to get out the required field names (I really don't want to do that). Just to be bold. When the query is made I do not have access to the list of fields needed from the table but I do know which field I do not need. This is part of a complex multi-part query. Surely there must be some way even if it's "hackish" such as using table variables or views My other option is to reorder the columns. My problem is with ExecuteScalar SQL functions which get the first row and first column.

When we met with such error message from stored procedure, Message 1205, Level 13, State 52, the process Pr_FooV2, Line 9 Services (Process ID 111) and another process is deadlock in the lock | communication buffer resources, and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. I am wondering whether such messages are stored in log files? I searched log folder of my SQL Server 2008 installation root (in my environment, it is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log), but can not find such files. thanks in advance, George

  I'm creating a search page on our SharePoint site that will allow users to find results from a SQL table by either performing a search from a text box @Param1, or selecting a value from a dropdown @SiteParam. My SQL SelectStatement is SELECT * FROM [Routing] WHERE [Site] LIKE CASE WHEN @Param1 IS NOT NULL THEN '%' + @Param1 + '%' ELSE @SiteParam This works great in SQL when I declare the parameters and set values for the search, but not so much in SharePoint. I have personally experienced that when I create a UDF (even if that is not complex) and use it into my SQL it drastically decrease the performance. But when I use SQL inbuild function they happen to work pretty faster. Conversion , logical & string functions are clear example of that. So, my question is "Why SQL in build functions are faster than UDF"? and it would be an advantage if someone can guide me how can I judge/manipulate function cost either mathematically or logically.

But, this start to give headache when I hooked the EF to SQL Server 2000. Because EF is using APPLY operator which only SQL Server 2005 and above can be supported. I do not know why the hell EF is using APPLy operator instead of sub queries. My current work around is: var seq = (from n in GetObjects() select n.SomeKey) .Distinct() .ToList() .Count(); But, I can forsee more problems to come. The above query is just a simple one. Did anyone come across such issue? And how you guys work around it? Or is there a way to force EF not to use APPLY operator? Any help will be very much appreciated. How Lun.

• Dynamic access to tables from another database inside an user function

  I have an user defined table function in SQL Server that aggregate data from several tables including a couple of tables of another database. That is done hardcoding the name of the database in the queries, but we want to make the database name configurable (because our databases usually share the server with the databases of other applications). I tried to construct a dynamic query string inside the function using the database name that is stored in a configuration table, but: When I tried exec(@sqlStatement) SQL Server said that execute string is not allowed inside a function. Then I tried exec sp_executesql @sqlStatement and the function was created, but when you execute it SQL Server says that inside a function you can only run extended functions and procedures. So the question is: is possible create a function or stored procedure that access a table in another database without having to recreate the function when the database name is different? TIA.
