  • Expanding list of databases in SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Takes Longer than SQL Server 2005

    - by Clever Human
Is it just me, or does expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2008 Management Studio take significantly more time than expanding the list of databases in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio? If it isn't just me, is there an explanation for this behavior? Whatever it is doing in the background that makes it take longer, can we turn that off? Is it configurable? I know, it seems trivial, but I am perpetually being surprised at how long this takes.

  • Why are there two implementations of std::sort (with and without a comparator) rather than one implementation with a default template parameter?

    - by PolyVox
In my code I'm adopting a design strategy which is similar to some standard library algorithms in that the exact behavior can be customized by a function object. The simplest example is std::sort, where a function object can control how the comparison is made between objects. I notice that the Visual C++ provides two implementations of std::sort, which naturally involves code duplication. I would have imagined that it was instead possible to have only one implementation, and provide a default comparator (using operator< ) as a default template parameter. What is the rational behind two separate versions? Would my suggestion make the interface more complex in some way? Or result in confusing error messages when the object does not provide operator Thanks, David

  • Visual Map about Microsoft development products

    - by Eduardo
Hello: I listen much about new Microsoft terminologies such as WPF, WCF, WWF, ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, entity framework, LINQ. I would like to see in a visual map: 1) how these products interrelate 2) Which are complements of which. 3) Order of priority to learn I think all the names that I mentioned, together with the use of Visual Studio applies to web developments. I need a good answer to guide my efforts of Web development in the best way. Thanks.

  • Why use Visual Studio 6 for C++

    - by robUK
Hello, I am just wondering why programmers who program in C++ for windows always use Visual Studio 6 instead of Visual Studio 2008? Isn't the compiler in 2008 much better than the one in VS6? The reason I ask as I have used many sdk's that are always written in VS6? Many thanks, Steve

  • How to obtain cocos2d-x 3.1 templates into XCode 5.x?

    - by Mayerz
I cloned Cocos2d-x repo from github, everything works fine but I can't find how to install the Cocos2d templates into XCode. I saw that people were used to use this file, located at the root of the repo: ./install-templates-xcode.sh -f -u but it looks like this script file has been removed, any help appreciated. edit: Still no answer to this problem, even the slightest clues could help me. Are there still templates for XCode? Couldn't get answers from #cocos2d-x irc

  • Solving a difficult incomplete type error

    - by ChAoS
I get an incomplete type error when trying to compile my code. I know that it is related to includes, but my project is large and it uses several templates so I can't find which type is actually incomplete. The error message doesn't help either: Compiling: ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/src/Graphics/objects/CursorFeedback.cpp In file included from ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/ext/boost/fusion/include/invoke_procedure.hpp:10, from ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/src/oscGestures/tuioApp.hpp:46, from /home/thechaos/Projectes/of_preRelease_v0061_linux_FAT/addons/../apps/OF-TangibleFramework/ofxTableGestures/src/Graphics/objects/CursorFeedback.hpp:35, from /home/thechaos/Projectes/of_preRelease_v0061_linux_FAT/addons/../apps/OF-TangibleFramework/ofxTableGestures/src/Graphics/objects/CursorFeedback.cpp:31: ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/ext/boost/fusion/functional/invocation/invoke_procedure.hpp: In function ‘void boost::fusion::invoke_procedure(Function, const Sequence&) [with Function = void (tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>::*)(long int, float, float, float, float, float), Sequence = boost::fusion::joint_view<boost::fusion::joint_view<boost::fusion::iterator_range<boost::fusion::vector_iterator<const boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0>, boost::fusion::vector_iterator<boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0> >, const boost::fusion::single_view<tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>*> >, boost::fusion::iterator_range<boost::fusion::vector_iterator<boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0>, boost::fusion::vector_iterator<const boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 6> > >]’: ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/src/oscGestures/tuioApp.hpp:122: instantiated from ‘void tuio::AlternateCallback<C, M, E>::run(tuio::TEvent*) [with C = tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>, M = void (tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>::*)(long int, float, float, float, float, float), E = tuio::TeventBasicFingersMoveFinger]’ /home/thechaos/Projectes/of_preRelease_v0061_linux_FAT/addons/../apps/OF-TangibleFramework/ofxTableGestures/src/Graphics/objects/CursorFeedback.cpp:64: instantiated from here ../../../addons/ofxTableGestures/ext/boost/fusion/functional/invocation/invoke_procedure.hpp:88: error: incomplete type ‘boost::fusion::detail::invoke_procedure_impl<void (tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>::*)(long int, float, float, float, float, float), const boost::fusion::joint_view<boost::fusion::joint_view<boost::fusion::iterator_range<boost::fusion::vector_iterator<const boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0>, boost::fusion::vector_iterator<boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0> >, const boost::fusion::single_view<tuio::CanBasicFingers<Graphic>*> >, boost::fusion::iterator_range<boost::fusion::vector_iterator<boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 0>, boost::fusion::vector_iterator<const boost::fusion::vector6<long int, float, float, float, float, float>, 6> > >, 7, true, false>’ used in nested name specifier If I copy the conflictive code to a same file I can compile it. So I know that the code itself is OK, the problem is the way I instantiate it. How can I trace the origin of this error? Is there any way to get the trace of the c++ compiler and preprocessor to get more informative messages?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 generation of the List/Index view

    - by Klas Mellbourn
    ASP.NET MVC 2 has powerful features for generating the model-dependent content of the Edit view (using EditorForModel) and Details view (using DisplayForModel) that automatically utilizes metadata and editor (or display) templates: <% using (Html.BeginForm()) {%> <%= Html.ValidationSummary(true) %> <fieldset> <legend><%= Html.LabelForModel() %></legend> <%= Html.EditorForModel() %> <p> <input type="submit" value="Save" /> </p> </fieldset> <% } %> However, I cannot find any comparable tools for the "last" step of generating the Index view (a.k.a. the List view). There I have to hard code the columns first in the row representing the headers and then inside the foreach loop: <h2>Index</h2> <table> <tr> <th></th> <th> ID </th> <th> Foo </th> <th> Bar </th> </tr> <% foreach (var item in Model) { %> <tr> <td> <%= Html.ActionLink("Edit", "Edit", new { id=item.ID }) %> | <%= Html.ActionLink("Details", "Details", new { id=item.ID })%> | <%= Html.ActionLink("Delete", "Delete", new { id=item.ID })%> </td> <td> <%= Html.Encode(item.ID) %> </td> <td> <%= Html.Encode(item.Foo) %> </td> <td> <%= Html.Encode(String.Format("{0:g}", item.Bar)) %> </td> </tr> <% } %> </table> What would be the best way to generate the columns (utlizing metadata such as HiddenInput), with the aim of making the Index view as free of model particulars as Edit and Details?

  • ASP.NET MVC2: Can you get ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within a collection?

    - by CodeSponge
I'm trying to call DisplayFor and DisplayForModel to iterate an IEnumerable< with various element types from within a view. I have Templates defined for each element/Model type. What I would like to do is check the ViewData.ModelMetadata.ContainerType from within the Template so that Template can determine if it was called as part of a collection. A simple example: Index1.aspx: To render a collection of Foos. <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<IEnumerable<Foo>>" %> <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="MainPlaceHolder" runat="server"> <ul><%:Html.DisplayForModel()%></ul> </asp:Content> Index2.aspx: To render a Foo. <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<Foo>" %> <asp:Content ContentPlaceHolderID="MainPlaceHolder" runat="server"> <%:Html.DisplayForModel()%> </asp:Content> Shared\DisplayTemplates\Foo.ascx: A context aware Template for Foo. <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<Foo>" %> <% var tag = typeof(IEnumerable).IsAssignableFrom(ViewData.ModelMetaData.ContainerType) ? "li" : "div"; %> <<%:tag%>><%:Model.Name%></<%:tag%>> The problem with this example is that ViewData.ModelMetaData.ContainerType is null in the Template when resolved though Index1.aspx. From what I've read on Brad Wilson post and others it has to do with the use of IEnumerable and its being an interface. Is there a way to insure that the ContainerType is set? Perhaps by creating a ModelMetadataProviders? I looked into that breifly but it appears the ContainerType value is determined before and then passed to the Provider. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Any software for pattern-matching and -rewriting source code?

    - by Steven A. Lowe
I have some old software (in a language that's not dead but is dead to me ;-)) that implements a basic pattern-matching and -rewriting system for source code. I am considering resurrecting this code, translating it into a modern language, and open-sourcing the project as a refactoring power-tool. Before I go much further, I want to know if anything like this exists already (my google-fu is fanning air on this tonight). Here's how it works: the pattern-matching part matches source-code patterns spanning multiple lines of code using a template with binding variables, the pattern-rewriting part uses a template to rewrite the matched code, inserting the contents of the bound variables from the matching template matching and rewriting templates are associated (1:1) by a simple (unconditional) rewrite rule the software operates on the abstract syntax tree (AST) of the input application, and outputs a modified AST which can then be regenerated into new source code for example, suppose we find a bunch of while-loops that really should be for-loops. The following template will match the while-loop pattern: Template oldLoopPtrn int @cnt@ = 0; while (@cnt@ < @max@) { … @body@ ++@cnt@; } End_Template while the following template will specify the output rewrite pattern: Template newLoopPtrn for(int @cnt@ = 0; @cnt@ < @max@; @cnt@++) { @body@ } End_Template and a simple rule to associate them Rule oldLoopPtrn --> newLoopPtrn so code that looks like this int i=0; while(i<arrlen) { printf("element %d: %f\n",i,arr[i]); ++i; } gets automatically rewritten to look like this for(int i = 0; i < arrlen; i++) { printf("element %d: %f\n",i,arr[i]); } The closest thing I've seen like this is some of the code-refactoring tools, but they seem to be geared towards interactive rewriting of selected snippets, not wholesale automated changes. I believe that this kind of tool could supercharge refactoring, and would work on multiple languages (even HTML/CSS). I also believe that converting and polishing the code base would be a huge project that I simply cannot do alone in any reasonable amount of time. So, anything like this out there already? If not, any obvious features (besides rewrite-rule conditions) to consider? EDIT: The one feature of this system that I like very much is that the template patterns are fairly obvious and easy to read because they're written in the same language as the target source code, not in some esoteric mutated regex/BNF format.

  • Asp.NET custom templated datalist throws argument out of range (index) on button press

    - by MrTortoise
    I have a class BaseTemplate public abstract class BaseTemplate : ITemplate This adds the controls, and provides abstract methods to implement in the inheriting class. The inheriting class then adds its html according to its data source and manages the data binding. This all works fine - I get the control appearing with properly parsed html. The problem is that the base class adds controls into the template that have their own CommandName arguments; the idea is that the class that implements the custom templated dataList will provide the logic of setting the Selected and Edit Indexes. This class also manages the data binding, etc. It sets all of the templates on the datalist in the Init method (which was another cause of this exception). The exception gets thrown when I hit one of these buttons - I have tried hooking up both their click and command events everywhere in case this was the problem. I have also ensured that their command names do not match any of the system ones. The stack trace does not include any references to my methods or objects which is why I am so stuck. It is the most unhelpful message I can imagine. The really frustrating thing is that I cannot get a breakpoint to fire - i.e. the problem is happening after I click the button, but before and of my code can execute. The last time this exception happened was when I had this code in a user control and was assigning the templates to the datalist in the PageLoad. I moved these into init to fix that problem; however, this is a problem that was there then and I have no idea what is causing it let alone how to solve it (and index out of range doesn't really help without knowing what index.) It used to inherit from another class, I have cleaned that out - so the serialization logic may be broken here. public class BONominalGroup { public BONominalGroup() #region Fields and properties private Int16 _ID; public Int16 ID { get { return _ID; } set { _ID = value; } } private string _group; public string Group { get { return _group; } set { _group = value; } } private bool _isPositve; public bool IsPositive { get { return _isPositve; } set { _isPositve = value; } } #endregion public override bool Equals(object obj) { bool retVal = false; BONominalGroup ng = obj as BONominalGroup; if (ng!=null) if (ng._group == this._group && ng._ID == this.ID && ng.IsPositive == this.IsPositive) { retVal = true; } return retVal; } public override int GetHashCode() { return ToString().GetHashCode(); } public override string ToString() { return "BONominalGroup{ID:" + this.ID.ToString() + ",Group:" + this.Group.ToString() + ",IsPositive:" + this.IsPositive.ToString() + "," + "}"; } #region IXmlSerializable Members public override void ReadXml(XmlReader reader) { reader.ReadStartElement("BONominalGroup"); this.ID = Convert.ToByte(reader.ReadElementString("id")); this.Group = reader.ReadElementString("group"); this.IsPositive = Convert.ToBoolean(reader.ReadElementString("isPositive")); base.ReadXml(reader); reader.ReadEndElement(); } public override void WriteXml(XmlWriter writer) { writer.WriteElementString("id", this.ID.ToString()); writer.WriteElementString("group", this.Group); writer.WriteElementString("isPositive", this.IsPositive.ToString()); // writer.WriteStartElement("BOBase"); // base.WriteXml(writer); writer.WriteEndElement(); } #endregion }

  • asp.net custom templated datalist - throws argument out of range (index) on button press

    - by MrTortoise
I have a class BaseTemplate public abstract class BaseTemplate : ITemplate This adds the controls, and provides abstract methods to implement in the inheriting class. The inheriting class then adds its html according to its data source and manages the data binding. this all works fine - I get the control appearing with properly parsed html. the problem is that the base class adds controls into the template that have their own CommandName arguments ... the idea is that the class that implements the custom templated dataList will provide the logic of setting the Selected and Edit Indexes. This class also manages the data binding etc. It sets all of the templates ont he datalist in the Init method (which was another cause of this exception). the exception gets throw when i hit one of these buttons .. but after the ItemCommand event is being processed. The stack trace does not include any references to my methods or objects which is why i am so stuck. • C++ Template const char array to int

    - by Levi Schuck
So, I'm wishing to be able to have a static const compile time struct that holds some value based on a string by using templates. I only desire up to four characters. I know that the type of 'abcd' is int, and so is 'ab','abc', and although 'a' is of type char, it works out for a template<int v> struct What I wish to do is take sizes of 2,3,4,5 of some const char, "abcd" and have the same functionality as if they used 'abcd'. Note that I do not mean 1,2,3, or 4 because I expect the null terminator. cout << typeid("abcd").name() << endl; tells me that the type for this hard coded string is char const [5], which includes the null terminator on the end. I understand that I will need to twiddle the values as characters, so they are represented as an integer. I cannot use constexpr since VS10 does not support it (VS11 doesn't either..) So, for example with somewhere this template defined, and later the last line template <int v> struct something { static const int value = v; }; //Eventually in some method cout << typeid(something<'abcd'>::value).name() << endl; works just fine. I've tried template<char v[5]> struct something2 { static const int value = v[0]; } template<char const v[5]> struct something2 { static const int value = v[0]; } template<const char v[5]> struct something2 { static const int value = v[0]; } All of them build individually, though when I throw in my test, cout << typeid(something2<"abcd">::value).name() << endl; I get 'something2' : invalid expression as a template argument for 'v' 'something2' : use of class template requires template argument list Is this not feasible or am I misunderstanding something?

  • How to view special characters in SQL Management Studio

    - by B Z
Sql 2005 I have a text column that has special characters stored e.g. CR, LF, but I don't know what they are. I would like to view these characters in management studio. Something like in Notepad ++ Show Symbol Show All Characters. My Goal: I am working on a data conversion from one database to another. When the data is converted and viewed in the native application it is displaying some funky characters like a pipe character. I would like to eliminate these characters during the conversion process.

  • Speed of TrueCrypt whole disk encryption

    - by Gareth
I'm getting a new development laptop soon, and I'm thinking of using TrueCrypt to encrypt the whole disk. What kind of performance drop can I expect? 10%? 30%? more? Also, assuming the workload has an effect, would compiling/using Visual Studio be affected much? I cannot seem to find anything like this on the web.

  • Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

    - by futureelite7
Hi, Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. I don't know what's wrong.) Thanks!

Having a chunk of text selected in Vim's visual mode, I'd like to copy that to the system's clipboard (be it the primary or X11's). Is there an easy solution for this? Obviously, a simple y doesn't do the trick.
