  • Watch TV/recorded shows from my Comcast cable box on my Mac?

    Hi, all. I've got a MacBook that's about three years old (it's the first generation that had a dual core CPU), running Leopard. I've got a Comcast DVR/HD Cable box. Is there something that I can install in between these devices that will let me watch TV from the Cable box on the Mac's display? The Cable box is in one room, but my tush and the Mac are in the other (fixing code on another machine that can't be part of the equation). Any ideas? Thanks! IVR Avenger

  • Is there other usage of Comcast extension cable and splitter?

    I have an unused Comcast high-speed internet self-install kit from 2006. It has two coils of extension cable, and a splitter, and some screws. The name of the cable is "extension cable" printed on the package. I wonder if that is its actual name? As ethernet cables are always useful, I wonder if the extension cables are totally worthless and should be tossed into a trash can? Or are they usable for some other purposes, or even sellable?     Can receive Comcast mail with evolution but cannot send. The SMTP settings record more digits when clicking the Server Configuration apply key. Sending ([email protected]:tenz222) port587 After clicking apply, receive a "Error while sending message" host lookup failed etc When rechecking,the sever settings are, ([email protected]%253atenz222) Attempted this process many times with same result.   • Multiple public IPs through DD-WRT without 1-to-1 NAT

    I've done a search here and wasn't able to find anything relevant to my situation. I apologize in advance if I've missed an existing post on the topic. Our ISP has provided us with 6 static IP addresses. We are currently using two of them (plus one for the Comcast-provided router). One of the static addresses routes to our internal network, and the other goes to our VOIP phone system. Unfortunately, the Comcast machine doesn't support QoS, so our VOIP calls have been choppy. We plan to put the Comcast-provided router into bridge mode and replace it with an ASUS RT-N16 running DD-WRT. However, I'm unsure how to set up DD-WRT to function similarly to our existing Comcast router. The Comcast router's WAN IP is the first of our static IP addresses. We did not need to provide an internal LAN IP address — simply connecting machines that use our other public addresses to the LAN ports on the Comcast router is enough for it to route between the connected machines and our internet connection. Is there a way to do a similar setup through the DD-WRT? Thanks in advance.

Do both a DSL and a cable ISP both require a modem to be used in an individual home? For example, I have a Motorola modem SURFboard Model:SB5101, Customer S/N: xxx S/N? xxx HFC MAC ID: xxx USB CPE MAC ID: xxx a coil of cable and a splitter from Comcast High-Speed internet Self-Installation Kit, which were bought 5 years ago, when I purchased Comcast internet service from its retailer www.comcastoffers.com. With them, I was hoping to reduce the amount of fee by avoiding to ask Comcast people to come over to install. But I remember at that time Comcast sent its technician here, dismissed my idea of self-installation, saying they needed to use their own modem and charging me a hefty fee, and so my equipments have never been used. I haven't been using Comcast for a long time. I wonder if my modem, cable and splitter (brand new, never used) are still good to use with an internet provider such as Comcast? If needed, we can ignore their policy and just consider the technology side? Or they are not good to use and I must throw them away like trash? Thanks and regards!

    for work we have a remote dedicated server to run our webservice that also runs our email services, at home(comcast residential internet) i cannot send mail using the dedicated server's SMTP, comcast spits back a error saying i can only use their SMTP server for sending mail at work(comcast business internet) we can use our dedicated server for sending mail with no problem so i set up a box at work to forward smtp traffic, i'm new to all this networking stuff by the way i used delegate to forward smtp traffic, can someone point me in the right direction on how to use this program(delegate) to fix our issue the delegate command i used to test is : delegated -P25 SERVER="smtp://dedicated.server.com:25" PERMIT=":::" -v i also opened up port 25 on the router so it points to my boxes ip are there any other ways to fool comcast into thinking im using my works ip to send mail, my coworkers and i are unable to send mail from home for some time now thanks

  • Need help troubleshooting highly variable ping times

    I'm at work using Citrix (think Remote Desktop) to connect to client sites. With my job I have to write a fair bit of code while I'm connected remotely via Citrix, so the latency of my internet connection is important. If I'm getting ping times above 250ms, then it becomes almost impossible to scroll, click or type with accuracy. Recently my Comcast business internet has been exhibiting highly variable ping times. If I ping google.com, I'll get pings that range from 9ms all the way up to 1300ms. The problem seems to be at its worst during the hours of 1PM to 4:30PM. Outside of those hours and the variance in pings settles down, mostly between 9ms and 50ms. The signal to noise ratio and upstream power are both fine on my modem--the values are here: http://pastebin.com/D4hWGPXf I ran a trace route from my computer to google.com (the results of which are here: http://pastebin.com/GcdjYvMh) and did another test ping to the IP of the first hop outside of our local network (73.98.44.1)--the variance in ping times existed in exactly the same manner as if I were pinging Google. Connecting directly to the cable modem by CAT5 makes no difference. Here is a screenshot demonstrating the variance of the ping times: http://postimage.org/image/haocdeauv/full/ -- as you can see it can get pretty bad. Three Comcast techs have been out (two of them were here when the problem wasn't happening) and they as well as the regional tier 2 Comcast support were unable to diagnose the problem. I now have a ticket open with tier 3 support, but have yet to hear back from them. Does anyone know what could cause these sorts of problems or have any idea from the traceroute above where it could be originating? The regional tier 2 guy tried to tell me that what I'm seeing is normal--are highly variable ping times like that ever acceptable? Anything I should ask Comcast to do or look at to get this problem fixed? Any tips/advice much appreciated! Edit: This is Comcast cable internet at a small start-up, we've ruled out congestion in our private LAN as a cause (i.e., no one's watching YouTube when the pings become variable). Update: Tier 3 Comcast support advised swapping out the modem, a tech came here today and did that--same problem persists.

  • Best way to troubleshoot intermittent network outages?

    We have a Comcast 50/10 line into our office. We keep seeing very short but sometimes frequent drops in our internet service. It's enough to kick you off of skype and stop any websites from loading, which is obviously affecting our productivity. We've tried 4 different routers, we've tried moving everyone off of wireless and onto wired via a switch and so far nothing has helped. Right now we're on a Cisco SB WRP400-G1 router. Attached to the router is a 16 port switch going to the ports in all of the offices. We've moved to OpenDNS in the case that it was the comcast DNS servers going down. Today we tried putting the modem, router, and switch on a UPS to make sure it wasn't power fluctuations that was causing it. Every time we call Comcast, by the time they are here the internet is working fine. I'd like to somehow prove that the problem is with Comcast, so if that means plugging in a machine directly into their router and collecting data all day, I'm up for that. I just want to hear ideas on what tools to run and how to collect this data. I could just continuously ping google.com all day long but I'm not sure how valuable that data would be. Thoughts?

  • Why is my router not routing?

    Starting a week and half ago my router stopped working with my cable modem. I went to sleep with it working and woke up with it not. I swapped in another router and am still having issues; I was gone for 10 days so now I'm back to trying to figure it out. While I was gone I left everything (cable modem, router, and computer) powered off. My setup: Comcast Ambit cable modem (from Comcast) Netgear WGR614 v4 router -- replaced with Linksys WRT54GS v1.1 Windows XP SP3 other computers, all currently unplugged The modem is using the firmware (ver 2.105.2001) provided by Comcast; hardware version 1.3 The Linksys router is using FW ver 4.71.4 (latest for this release of HW), factory defaults I am only using the wired connections; no wireless. I have swapped out all of the cat5 cable. If I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, I can ping by name or number. Everything works perfectly. If I plug my computer into the router and the router into the modem, I cannot access anything outside of my local network. This is the exact setup I've used for the past 5 years; there were no changes in the past year. Now here's the interesting part: I can log into the Linksys router and get status information from it; everything appears good. Using the Diagnostics, I can run ping and traceroute to any site on the internet. These work perfectly. From my computer, I can ping the router and the modem. However, I cannot ping anything on the internet by with name or number. If I plug in another computer, I can ping it successfully. I've included two transcripts below that show these two attempts. Addresses, DNS, gateways, etc. look good. I cannot access the internet through either router. I am at a loss here. Suggestions? Help!   • Sonicwall - dual WAN ports - switch from one to another

    Hi, Folks! I'm using a SonicWall NSA 240 which has two WAN ports (T1 and Comcast) and the LAN port has a cable which connects to a switch. From the switch, several cables connect to other switches. The SonicWall doesn't have DHCP enabled; one of our domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 also functions as a DHCP server. Is there a way for a user in our network to change connection from T1 to Comcast as their ISP or vice versa? In other words, if a user is connected via the T1, can he/she somehow connect via Comcast instead? Thanks, in advance, for your help! Sincerely, Charles

  • Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

    I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?
