  • See the Lord of the Rings Epic from the Perspective of Mordor [eBook]

    - by ETC
Much like the wildly popular book “Wicked” mixed up the good/bad dichotomy in the Wizard of Oz, “The Last Ring-Bearer” shows us the Mordor’s take on the Lord of the Rings. The work of a Russian paleontologist, Kirill Yeskov, “The Last Ring-Bearer” frames the conflict in the Lord of the Rings from the perspective of the citizens of Mordor. Salon magazine offers this summary, as part of their larger review: In Yeskov’s retelling, the wizard Gandalf is a war-monger intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science “destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men!” He’s in cahoots with the elves, who aim to become “masters of the world,” and turn Middle-earth into a “bad copy” of their magical homeland across the sea. Barad-dur, also known as the Dark Tower and Sauron’s citadel, is, by contrast, described as “that amazing city of alchemists and poets, mechanics and astronomers, philosophers and physicians, the heart of the only civilization in Middle-earth to bet on rational knowledge and bravely pitch its barely adolescent technology against ancient magic.” Hit up the link below to grab a PDF of the official English translation of Yeskov’s work. • Terminator Skull Crafted from Dollar Store Parts [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this year we shared an Iron Man prop build made from Dollar Store parts. The same Dollar Store tinker is at it again, this time building a Terminator endoskull. James Bruton has a sort of mad tinker knack for finding odds and ends at the Dollar Store and mashing them together into novel creations. In the video below, he shows how he took a pile of random junk from the store (plastic bowls, cheap computer speakers, even the packaging the junk came in) and turned it into a surprisingly polished Terminator skull. • linux: disable using loopback and send data via wire between 2 eth cards of one comp

Hello I have a comp with 2 eth cards, connected with patch-cord (direct eth. cable from 1st to 2nd). The linux is installed, I want to send data from 1st network card to 2nd. And I want to force the packet to pass via cable. I can set up any ip on cards. With ping I get counters on cards constant. Is it possible with tcp/ip sockets? PS. I need to write a program. which will send packets via eth, so stackoverflow-related question. There can be some OS-dependent way, they will help me too

  • Generate Ant build file

    - by inakiabt
    I have the following project structure: root/ comp/ env/ version/ build.xml build.xml build.xml Where root/comp/env/version/build.xml is: <project name="comp-env-version" basedir="."> <import file="../build.xml" optional="true" /> <echo>Comp Env Version tasks</echo> <target name="run"> <echo>Comp Env Version run task</echo> </target> </project> root/comp/env/build.xml is: <project name="comp-env" basedir="."> <import file="../build.xml" optional="true" /> <echo>Comp Env tasks</echo> <target name="run"> <echo>Comp Env run task</echo> </target> </project> root/comp/build.xml is: <project name="comp" basedir="."> <echo>Comp tasks</echo> </project> Each build file imports the parent build file and each child inherits and overrides parent tasks/properties. What I need is to get the generated build XML without run anything. For example, if I run "ant" (or something like that) on root/comp/env/version/, I would like to get the following output: <project name="comp-env-version" basedir="."> <echo>Comp tasks</echo> <echo>Comp Env tasks</echo> <echo>Comp Env Version tasks</echo> <target name="run"> <echo>Comp Env Version run task</echo> </target> </project> Is there an Ant plugin to do this? With Maven? What are my options if not? EDIT: I need something like "mvn help:effective-pom" for Ant.

  • Taking my ASP.NET from my local comp to the server

    - by Andrew G. Johnson
Hi All, So I have been developing a small ASP.NET web app in C# for my company over the past few weeks and now I am trying to push it onto our Rackspace server. First step was to create a virtual directory because we want it to be www.ourdomain.com/appname/ and most of the stuff on ourdomain.com is currently in classic ASP. So I did this and then uploaded my stuff to the new folder. I *think* I did this at least semi-right because the error message I am getting is that nice puke color (ASP.NET style instead of classic ASP style) -- problem is it is generic and just saying runtime error. I tried just copy/pasting <customErrors mode="On" /> into the web.config file in the /appname/ directory but nothing changed So the actual questions are: How can I get a more descriptive error, when I was developing locally I just pushed the "play button" in VS2010 and it would either show me the app or tell me where I screwed up Is there anything else I'm doing wrong that may be causing this? If there's things I need to check lemme know!

  • Virtual methods as Comp function to sort

    - by wilsongoncalo.mp
Hello everyone! I'm new to C++ and i'm trying to use std::sort function to sort a vector of Solutions. The code is something like this (solution list is a *vector): void SolutionSet::sort(Comparator &comparator) { std::sort(solutionsList_->begin(), solutionsList_->end(), &comparator::compare); } The comparator param is a Comparator´s child class instance , and the compare method is virtual at Comparator class and implemented by all Comparator's child classes. And i want to use that function as a comparator function at std:sort(). Is this possible? If it is, can someone tell me how? Because with the previous code, it doesn't work. If i've not made myself clear, please just ask! Thank you guys!

  • Interesting Topics in Comp. Sci. for New Students?

    - by SoulBeaver
I hope this is the right forum to ask this question. Last friday I was in a discussion with my professors about the students' lack of motivation and interest in the field of Computer Science. All of the students are enrolled, but through questionnaires and other questions that my professor posed it was revealed that over 90% of all enrolled students are just in it for the reward of getting a job sometime in the future (since it's a growing field with high job potential) I asked my professor for the permission to take over the first couple of lectures and try and motivate, interest and inspire students for the field of Computer Science and programming in particular (this is the Intro to Programming course). This request was granted and I now have a week to come up with a lecture topic for my professor's five groups. My main goal isn't to teach, I just want to get students to be as interested in the field as I am. I want to show them what's possible, what awesome magical things have been done in the field, the future we are heading towards using programming and Comp. Sci. Therefore, I would like to pose this question: I have a few topics, materials and sample projects that I would like to talk about: -- Grace Hopper (It is my hope to interest the female programmers in the class. There are never more than two or three per group and they, more than males, are prone to jumping ship and abandoning Comp. Sci.) -- The Singularity Institute -- Alan Turing -- Robotics -- Programming not as a chore or a must, but the idea that we are, at our core, the nexus to which anything anybody does in the digital world is connected to. We are the problem solvers; we assemble all the parts together and we are the ones that, essentially, make the vision a reality. -- Give them an idea for a programming project which, through the help of the professor, could be significant to every student (I want students to not only feel interested in the topic, but they should feel important, that what they do here makes a difference) Do you have interesting topics worthy of discussion, something I can tell the students which they can get interested about? How would you approach the lecture? If you had 90 minutes worth of time to try and get students interested in the project, what would you do?

  • How do you make comp.sci students and future programmers aware of the various software licenses and the nuances of it ?

    - by Samyak Bhuta
To be specific How would you include it as part of curriculum ? Would it be too boring to just introduce them as a pure law subject ? Are there any course structure available or can we derive one ? What are the books that could be used ? I would like to see that - after going through the course - candidate is well aware of "what software licenses are and what they are good for". Various implications of not knowing it in it's proper sense. What licenses they should use for their own code. What to consider when they are trying to use certain libraries or tools in their project and gauge risks/rewards associated with it. The idea is to let them make informed choices when they are professionals/practitioners in field of programming and not make them substitute for a lawyer or even a paralegal who is going to fight the case or draft things.

  • C++ Operator overloading - 'recreating the Vector'

    - by Wallter
I am currently in a collage second level programing course... We are working on operator overloading... to do this we are to rebuild the vector class... I was building the class and found that most of it is based on the [] operator. When I was trying to implement the + operator I run into a weird error that my professor has not seen before (apparently since the class switched IDE's from MinGW to VS express...) (I am using Visual Studio Express 2008 C++ edition...) • Remote Desktop fails after VPN connection

    - by Samet Sorgut
The local computer (comp 1) is connected to a remote computer (comp 2) with Remote Desktop. On the remote computer (comp 2), I try to establish an VPN connection to a different remote computer (comp 3). Once I try to establish the VPN connection from the remote computer (comp 2) to the second remote computer (comp 3), Remote Desktop freezes on comp 1. It is not possible to connect to comp 2 again via Remote Desktop. What can be done to connect to this remote computer (comp 2) after it establishes a VPN connection? The only thing that comes to my mind is to install a second NIC and configure Remote Desktop to accept connection from this NIC while VPN is working from the other... What do you suggest? EDIT: I want to use the internet connection of the VPN, so all traffic should go over the VPN but still RDP working. • Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

    - by Logman
I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix. I tried reseting the policy to defaults, but no luck: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose EDIT:

  • Create lags with a for-loop in R

    - by cptn
    I've got a data.frame with stock data of several companies (here it's only two). I want 10 additional columns in my stock data.frame df with lagged dates (from -5 days to +5 days) for both companies in my event data.frame. I'm using a for loop which is probably not the best solution, but it works partially. DATE <- c("01.01.2000","02.01.2000","03.01.2000","06.01.2000","07.01.2000","09.01.2000","10.01.2000","01.01.2000","02.01.2000","04.01.2000","06.01.2000","07.01.2000","09.01.2000","10.01.2000") RET <- c(-2.0,1.1,3,1.4,-0.2, 0.6, 0.1, -0.21, -1.2, 0.9, 0.3, -0.1,0.3,-0.12) COMP <- c("A","A","A","A","A","A","A","B","B","B","B","B","B","B") df <- data.frame(DATE, RET, COMP, stringsAsFactors=F) df # DATE RET COMP # 1 01.01.2000 -2.00 A # 2 02.01.2000 1.10 A # 3 03.01.2000 3.00 A # 4 06.01.2000 1.40 A # 5 07.01.2000 -0.20 A # 6 09.01.2000 0.60 A # 7 10.01.2000 0.10 A # 8 01.01.2000 -0.21 B # 9 02.01.2000 -1.20 B # 10 04.01.2000 0.90 B # 11 06.01.2000 0.30 B # 12 07.01.2000 -0.10 B # 13 09.01.2000 0.30 B # 14 10.01.2000 -0.12 B this loop works fine comp <- as.vector(unique(df$COMP)) mylist <- vector('list', length(comp)) # create lags in DATE for(i in 1:length(comp)) { print(i) comp_i <- comp[i] df_k <- df[df$COMP %in% comp_i, ] # all trading days of one firm df_k <- transform(df_k, DATEm1 = c(NA, head(DATE, -1)), DATEm2 = c(NA, NA, head(DATE, -2)), DATEm3 = c(NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -3)), DATEm4 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA,head(DATE, -4)), DATEm5 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -5)), DATEp1 = c(DATE[-1], NA)) #DATEp2 = c(DATE[-2], NA, NA), #DATEp3 = c(DATE[-3], NA, NA, NA), #DATEp4 = c(DATE[-4], NA, NA, NA, NA), #DATEp5 = c(DATE[-5], NA, NA, NA, NA, NA)) mylist[[i]] = df_k } df1 <- do.call(rbind, mylist) But if I add the lines with DATEp2, DATEp3, DATEp4, DATEp5. the code doesn't work. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Here the code with all the lagged dates. # create lags in DATE for(i in 1:length(comp)) { print(i) comp_i <- comp[i] df_k <- df[df$COMP %in% comp_i, ] # all trading days of one firm df_k <- transform(df_k, DATEm1 = c(NA, head(DATE, -1)), DATEm2 = c(NA, NA, head(DATE, -2)), DATEm3 = c(NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -3)), DATEm4 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA,head(DATE, -4)), DATEm5 = c(NA, NA, NA, NA, NA, head(DATE, -5)), DATEp1 = c(DATE[-1], NA), DATEp2 = c(DATE[-2], NA, NA), DATEp3 = c(DATE[-3], NA, NA, NA), DATEp4 = c(DATE[-4], NA, NA, NA, NA), DATEp5 = c(DATE[-5], NA, NA, NA, NA, NA)) mylist[[i]] = df_k } df1 <- do.call(rbind, mylist)

  • Rendering composite/SVideo input with GraphEdit (comp./svid. source for crossbar)?

    - by Synetech
Does anyone know how to form a GraphEdit graph to render composite/SVideo input (especially for a Hauppauge or AIW card)? Google (and Google Images) finds only results focusing on rendering the TV tuner which is already simple enough. The tv-tuner-in pins connect to the TvTuner/TvAudio source, but nothing seems to be able to connect to the Composite/SVideo pins. I have looked through the filters and could find no sources to connect to the Composite/SVideo input pins of the crossbar; GraphEdit always complains that they are not compatible.

Hi, I've an example please tell me whether it is Decorator pattern or not? public abstract class ComputerComponent { String description ="Unknown Type"; public String getDescription() { return description; } public abstract double getCost(); } public abstract class AccessoryDecorator { ComputerComponent comp; public abstract String getDescription(); } public class PIIIConcreteComp extends ComputerComponent { public PIIIConcreteComp() { description=“Pentium III”; } public double getCost() { return 19950.00; } public class floppyConcreteDeco extends AccessoryDecorator { public floppyConcreteDeco(ComputerComponent comp) this.comp=comp; } public String getDescription() { return comp.getDescription() +”, floppy 1.44 mb”; } public double getCost() { return 250+comp.getCost(); } } public class ComponentAssembly { public static void createComponent() { ComputerComponent comp = new PIIConcreteComp(); // create a PIII computer object ComputerComponent deco1= new floppyConcreteDeco(comp); // decorate it with a floppy //ComputerComponent deco2= newCDRomConcreteDeco(deco1); ComputerComponent deco2= new floppyConcreteDeco(deco1); // decorate with a CDRom or with one more floppy System.out.println( deco2.getdescription() +” “+ deco2.getCost(); } } Thank you.

  • java.lang.IllegalAccessException during Ant jwsc webservice build

    - by KevB
Hi. I have a large application, part of which relies on a set of 3 webservices. I'm currently in the process of writing an Ant build script to build and package the application into an EAR file. When building the web sub-project for this application I use the <jwsc> task in Ant to compile the webservices. This causes an IllegalAccessException, as outlined in the stack trace below: [jwsc] warning: 'includeantruntime' was not set, defaulting to build.sysclasspath=last; set to false for repeatable builds [jwsc] JWS: processing module weboutput [jwsc] Parsing source files [jwsc] Parsing source files [jwsc] 3 JWS files being processed for module weboutput [jwsc] JWS: C:\dev\ir\irWeb\src\webservices\DailyRun.java Validated. error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Binning into timeslots - Is there a better way than using list comp?

    - by flyingcrab
I have a dataset of events (tweets to be specific) that I am trying to bin / discretize. The following code seems to work fine so far (assuming 100 bins): HOUR = timedelta(hours=1) start = datetime.datetime(2009,01,01) z = [dt + x*HOUR for x in xrange(1, 100)] But then, I came across this fateful line at python docs 'This makes possible an idiom for clustering a data series into n-length groups using zip(*[iter(s)]*n)'. The zip idiom does indeed work - but I can't understand how (what is the * operator for instance?). How could I use to make my code prettier? I'm guessing this means I should make a generator / iterable for time that yields the time in graduations of an HOUR?
