    Hi. Does anyone have any expiriance in telecomuting (working at home) for a company based in some foreign country? By this i don't mean working on some contracted job, but more or less permanent job. Is this even possible, what are options for payment, and can you expect to be payed by usual rates for that country or significantly less? Is there any workinghours control, or as long as you deliver on time it's all good.

  • Separate urls for a set of pages sharing 80% duplicate content

    Issue: Currently my site has one particular page which has country specific data. So I've URLs like : mysite.com/sale-united-states mysite.com/sale-united-kingdom mysite.com/sale-sweden etc. All these pages have 80-90% common content and 10-20% country specific content. currently all these pages canonically point to mysite.com/sale-united-states. The problem is when someone searches for "sale Sweden", Google correctly shows mysite.com/sale-united-states page, which does not feel correct as it shows US page instead of Sweden. Now I'm thinking of not using canonical url so that country specific urls are produced in Google saerch. But I'm not sure how 80% duplicate content is going to affect SEO? What should be the recommended approach for this situation? A friend of mine suggested a "separate subdomain per country" based approach but it seems overkill for one page.

    I see many companies that have an international presence trying to localize their social media presence by creating country or language specific accounts. However some seemed to have done so without following a consistent pattern, one example being the World Wildlife Fund when you look at their Twitter accounts: World_Wildlife : verified account with 200K followers WWF : main account with 800K followers www_uk : lower case with underscore between WWF and country indicator WWFCanada : upper case with country indicator attached to WWF ... I am planning to build a website which hopefully will grow global and would like to avoid this sort of inconsistencies. Also, I was comparing what Twitter and Facebook allow in their username and found out that they don't allow the same characters to be used (e.g. for instance that the former doesn't allow . whereas the latter does) making difficult to ensure consistency across social networks. Hence my questions: Are there known naming schemes for creating localized Twitter and Facebook accounts while maintaining a certain consistency between them (best effort)? Are there any researches out there that have proven whether some schemes were better than others in terms of readability and/or SEO?

    I want to forward traffic destined for a specific ip from my internal network via a specific interface. I have two interfaces which are currently load balanced. I need all requests for a certain ip to go out via eth0 otherwise my external ip changes and sessions are dropped. eg. all requests from 10.1.1.1/24 to ip 11.22.33.44 on port 443 must go out via interface eth0. How can I do this with iptables?

Instead of the current setting of each country site running under its own domain name: www.companyname.de www.companyname.ch www.companyname.at I would love to merge them all in this way: www.companyname.com/de www.companyname.com/ch www.companyname.com/at with the country TLDs doing a 301 redirect to the respective .com address. However, I have been repeatedly told not to do this due to likely problems with SEO - the business is very SEO dependent, and being a rental chain, needs to be strong in local results. So the question is: Is there an unavoidable hit in Search Engine Optimization when redirecting to a central .com domain? What measures can be taken to soften the blow? What comes to my mind is explicitly specifying a lang attribute in the html tag. Are there any other ways to specifically point out geographical location for sub-directories?

    Just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, and the keyboard indicator applet no longer displays the two-letter country code for the active layout. This is terrible. Is this the default behaviour? Anyone using two layouts can't tell which language they're in. I can't seem to find the setting for this, it used to be in the preferences for keyboard layout. Update 1: In case this wasn't obvious - I have two keyboard layouts - English and Hebrew. I just upgraded form 10.04, where the country code (USA/IL) was displayed, overlaid on the flag. Now all I get is a vague keyboard icon, and can't find the settings for this. Update 2: this seems to be a bug that people have been reporting since Lucid, and is now back in Maverick

    Using Java, you can get the list of ISO2 codes through Locale.getISOCountries() (see this related question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/712231/best-way-to-get-a-list-of-countries-in-java). However, I would like to have the list of all country names (in English for example) and not the list of ISO2 country codes. How can I do that by programming in Java or Groovy ?   • 301 redirect from a country specific domain

    I originally started using a .do domain extension for my site, but later realized that this country specific domain would prevent us from appearing in search results for places outside of the Dominican Republic. We started using a .co domain extension and redirected all requests to the new domain using an HTTP 301. The "Crawl Stats" in Google Webmaster Tools shows me that the .co domain is being crawled, but the "Index Status" shows the number of pages indexed at 0. The "Crawl Stats" for the .do domain says that it's being crawled and the "Index Status" shows a number greater than 0. I also set a "Change Of Address" in Google Webmaster Tools to have the .do domain point to the new .co domain. We're still not appearing in search results at all even for very specific strings where I would expect to find us. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Can varnish cache files without specific extension or residing in specific directory

    I have a varnish installation to cache (MANY) images that my service serves. It is about 200 images of around 4k per second and varnish happily serves them according to the following rule: if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "\.(css|gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png|ico|img|tga|wmf)$") { remove req.http.cookie; return(lookup); } Now, the thing is that I recently added another service on the same server that creates thumbnails to serve but it does not add a specific extension. The files are of the following filename pattern: http://www.example.com/thumbnails/date-of-thumbnail/xxxxxxxxx.xx where xx are numbers, so xxxxxxxxx.xx could be 6482364283.73 (two numbers at the end) (actually this is the timestamp so I can keep extra info in the filename) That has the side effect that varnish does not cache them and I see them constantly being served by apache itself. Even though I can change the format from now on to create thumbs ending in .jpg, is there a way to change the vcl file of my varnish daemon to either cache everything under a directory (the thumbnails directory) or everything with two numbers at its extension?   • my domain is well indexed just in my country

    This is my domain : http://yon.ir and it mainly should be shown in search results with the keyword "????? ????? ????" in country of Iran it is shown in google search results with rank 13 (with that keyword) which is logical but with IPs of other countries , it's not shown even in 10 first google result pages. (but the domain is indexed and when I search the whole domain title, it shows up my site at first) it's about 10 days with this manner and the domain is not new .(it was working with its previous owner before) So , what's the problem here?

    I already bought a domain name .com on godaddy for my company. I would like to reserve the same name with country specific domain extention, but not sure where to buy them and how to do it. Here are the ones that I would like to buy: Europe: fr, co.uk, de, ch, es, it, nl, se, no, ru australia: com.au asia: sg Godaddy has all except 1 in europe, australia and singapore. Should I find a website that sell all of them or should I buy some of them in godaddy and others elsewhere? Any suggestions where to buy them?     Hello,I'd like to develop apps for Windows Phone 7,but I can't register at AppHub,because my country (Slovakia) is not supported. A guy from Microsoft said that I need to find someone under whom I'd publish those apps. Where would I find somebody who'd be willing to register there and basically act as my publisher? I'm risking that he'd take my app earnings and disappear if it's not an honest person. What would the "publisher" risk by signing his name under my apps? Or are any of you willing to do it?

    I have a website in which the content is not country specific. The TLD is currently .it but the company is hosted and based in the United States. I'm wondering if a .it domain will negatively effect the site's search rankings. Is it better to use a .com TLD? For example (I don't actually own these domains), would the domain love.it have a worse ranking than loveit.com? (Assuming the content of the sites is the same) I've been searching everywhere for an answer with not much luck. Any advice would be very helpful.

  • Can I show a single country (masked out) in GoogleMaps?

    Hello! Is it possible to mask away neighbor countries in GoogleMap? In my case I just want to show Sweden on one view. On a second view just Norway, Denmark etc etc... I know it is possible to draw polygon lines and fill them accordingly on to Maps API. Problem is that or the result sets get huge or the lines get very rough etc... Would be nice if GoogleMaps could deliver a country at the time without neighbors. Does anyone know about a good coordinate database with country borders? Best best regards, Niclas

Main: a 24 inch Dell monitor that Mac OS X detects and displays on 1920x1200 Secondary: a 19 inch Chimei monitor that supports resolution 1440x900 but Mac OS X detects it as 1344x1008. How can I force a 1400x900 resolution on my secondary monitor?
