  I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

• Ubuntu 12.10 - Windows 8 Dual Boot (Tried boot-repair) - Dual OS option not showing

  as title says, this is my first time trying ubuntu. I have been trying since last week with continuous googling and searching, but still no luck. I had win8 x64 installed before, then tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 desktop (dual OS option) I tried like 10 times already, everytime it's showing installation complete, but when i restarted and boot from my HDD, dual boot option is not showing, directly to win8 startup I installed win8 on C before. I had a 104gb free drive to install linux to (it's installed already.. but the dual boot option is now showing) In case it helps, Laptop Model : Acer Aspire 4752 Intel Core i3, 2.30GHz Ram 4GB 64 Bit OS - Windows 8 Pro with Media Center This is the url i got from the boot-repair http://paste.ubuntu.com/1407018/ (it's not win vista, thou it seems showing so in the link) Thanks a lot..   Since version 10.04 I have problems with Ubuntu (I think) my graphics card. This problem arises especially when working with graphics or CPU usage much. The problem is that it breaks the GUI as you see in the image and the entire computer is very slow. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and have a Intel graphics card 945G x86/MMX/SSE2. • Ubuntu dual boot OS crashed my computer. Now my computer won't boot. Please Help

  I've just tried to install ubuntu 12.04 dual boot OS with Windows 7 and it finished installing in ubuntu. However, it said that the bootloader "grub.." failed to install. The same exact problem here I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS. . When I tried to restart my computer, it went to the hp screen since my computer is a dv6 hp laptop and then it goes into this black screen with no words or any buttons will work. There is just a blinking underscore that seems like it'll allow me to type but makes error sounds when I type. Is this because I possibly partitioned my memory incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very desperate. ANY HELP would be great. Thanks.

• The Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot NIghtmare

  I have done some research as to how to go about this dual-boot, and I am close, but I need some guidance with booting into Windows 8 (Ubuntu is installed). I have a Lenovo Ideapad y510p. I will go over what I have done to dual-boot this laptop, with windows 8 pre-installed, with Ubuntu 12.04: I followed every instruction to the letter for the 97-vote response here, and everything worked fine up until after the repair boot section: Installing on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 System (UEFI Supported) I ran into the following error upon restarting after the repair boot section: error: invalid arch independent elf magic. • gnu screen - mouse does not work in nested screen session

  I started a screen session inside another screen session, both on my local machine. This is using cygwin, but I don't think it matters. I have tried via ssh to a real unix machine but the behaviour is the same. Mouse works great in the first screen session, I'm able to open vim with :set mouse=a and I can click to move the cursor or switch tabs, and the mouse wheel scrolls. But in the nested session it does not work, mouse is only useful for selecting terminal text that gets put in the clipboard, but is not able to interact with vim. I want this to work because I usually work with a local screen session, then ssh to a remote server and have a remote screen session running too (hence the nesting) and I like to scroll swiftly in vim by using the mouse wheel. Can anyone tell me why the mouse works in the first layer of screen but not in the second, nested screen session, and how I can make it work? Thanks in advance, Matthew

• Can't Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 on Sony Vaio S 15 (2012)

  I just bought my dad a new laptop for fathers day, a Sony Vaio S 15 (the latest models from Sony) and he wants to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I put Ubuntu 12.04 on a USB drive and went to install it on the computer, but when I got into the partition part of the install there was no option to dual boot. Only to delete everything and install Ubuntu or 'other'. I installed using the 'other' feature by manually partitioning, however once I installed it the computer wouldn't ever go to grub. From inside windows I used Easy BCD to try and fix the boot loader so it would give the option to boot into Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.04, but it couldn't detect ANY operating systems on the computer (not even windows). Is it not possible to dual boot on the latest Sony Vaios, or is there a workaround for this?

• Cannot connect to Internet after using Windows XP on dual booted machine

  I have a dual booted Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 box (AMD64) and have an unusual problem in that after connecting to the internet on Windows I cannot connect using Ubuntu. I don't believe it is actually a problem with configuring my Ubuntu connections because when I get up in the morning Ubuntu connects without any problem - this problem only exists (and persists for at least several hours) if I try to connect using Ubuntu immediately after connecting using Windows. I don't know how long the problem actually lasts because I usually just go to bed and then in the morning I can connect without problems. It is not problem with my provider's service as I have a second Ubuntu 10.10 box which I manually connect and works even when the dual booted one (on Ubuntu) won't. It is a particular problem with the dual booted box. A power down reset does not solve the problem.

  I just bought a hp dv7 and I want to dual boot it with the win7 it came with and ubuntu 12.04.1. I shrunk the C partition to make room for the ubuntu one then downloaded an burnt the iso. Next I booted from the cd and followed the simple instructions until I got to the page of the install to choose the partition where all choices were greyed out and the table was completely blank and the drop down only had one choice. After researching this I found that a main problem might be that I can only have 4 primary partitions and the computer was shipped with the 4 already (system,C,recovery,hp tools). I guess my question is what is the best way to go about completing this dual boot? I have read to delete the hp tools partition or combine it with another, I just want a step by step of how to dual boot this computer, I have done plenty of computers in the past but never ran into these issues that come with an HP (should have got a dell lol)!

• Move a screen session back to its original PID

  Installed McMyAdmin (minecraft manager) on Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. Wrote my own service to start McMyAdmin (.net app running in Mono) in its own screen session, and be able to inject proper McMyAdmin commands into that session with the init.d script. Its been running great! Today, I decided to start installing a Source dedicated server (counterstrike pro mod) I determine its going to be a long download process so I quit the process and fire up a fresh screen session called "source". I paste the command in, but it has a space at the begining and bash complains of ignoring semaphores or some such. I detach and reattach the session. Its sliding like butter. I ctrl+a-d out of the session and start exploring the new folder structure and figure out where I need to place a symbolic link. I go to resume that screen and this is what I see: $screen -r source There are several suitable screens on 20091.source (12/02/12 22:59:53) (Detached) 19972.source (12/02/12 22:57:31) (Detached) 917.minecraft (11/30/12 15:30:37) (Attached) It appears I am connected to the minecraft screen?!?!?! So I attach to the other screens one at a time. minecraft is running in 19972.source and sourceds is running in 20091.source So how the hell did I move the minecraft process to another session called source and my main terminal is now "attached" to the minecraft screen? more: I just used exit to quit the putty session, then logged back in, its still the same. did that 3 more times and now the minecraft screen is gone and everything is acting as it should except, of course, for the session name and start time of the "new" minecraft screen. Should I just submit this as a bug for GNU screen?

• Dual-Boot Problem

  I have a HP laptop that originally had Windows 7 OS on it, I partioned the drive and allocated 100gb (est.) for the ubuntu install. the install went fine i have ubuntu and windows 7 still on the computer. But I can not get the OS boot screen to show ubuntu as an OS. I can while start up pull up the start menu screen via ESC. Key and press F9 for Boot Device Options and get the boot manager screen and it lists... OS boot manager, Ubuntu (Hitachi HTS 543232A7A384), boot from EFI file, and Notebook Hard Drive... I can boot Ubuntu from this screen by selecting Ubuntu. But i would like to make it easier to access. The computer boot is not for myself otherwise it would not be a problem i would remove windows altogether. I would like to make it basically "User Friendly" if that's at all possible and make the OS boot screen show Ubuntu as a bootable OS as well as Windows 7. on the boot selection screen. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated, I've looked to see if i could find the answer and maybe i've overlooked something so here I am. Like i said i need it to be as user friendly as possible and force the user to choose windows 7 or ubuntu not send them into one or the other without them being allowed to choose. I can get any information you might need if necessary but i dont know exactly what you'll need other than what i've given. Ubuntu version is the 13.04 just so you know.

• UEFI Dual-Boot - Ubuntu 12.04.3 + Windows 8.1 (One GPT HDD)

  UEFI Dual-Boot - Ubuntu 12.04.3 + Windows 8.1 (One GPT HDD) Hello, I'm having trouble setting up a dual-boot (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Windows 8.1) in my ASUS K55VM laptop's hard drive disk (500 GB). I was mostly following tutorials for doing this, but at some point something has gone wrong. Up to now, I have followed these steps: I formatted my HDD into GPT. I clean-installed Windows 8.1. I didn't prevent Windows from choosing the partitions to use and it created these partitions: A Recovery partition (sda1). An EFI System Partition (sda2). A Microsoft Reserved Partition (sda3). A Windows Data Partition or C drive (sda4). I reduced the Windows Data Partition via Windows' Disk Management. I made a bootable USB Stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from ISO, using Universal USB Installer. I created these partitions for Ubuntu: A Boot partition, mounted at /boot (sda5). A Root partition, mounted at / (sda6). A Swap partition (sda7). In Device for boot loader installation I chose: /dev/sda. Then, when I rebooted, it went straight into Ubuntu. So I installed Boot-Repair, and clicked on Recommended Repair. It automatically did its job without asking for anything. I rebooted and Grub showed up, with a lot of options. At this point I had a decent dual-boot setup; Ubuntu and both Windows entries worked fine: Ubuntu. Windows Boot UEFI Loader. Windows UEFI bkpbootmgfw.efi. I executed this command: sudo grub-install --force /dev/sda5. Then I tried to make Windows 8.1's Boot Manager the main boot manager, so that I could choose which OS to boot into from a menu. I downloaded EasyBCD on Windows. It showed 2 Ubuntu entries and 1 Windows entry. I went into BCD Deployment tab and clicked on Write MBR. At this point, I went into BIOS and made Windows Boot Manager the first boot option. When I rebooted, I got a black screen with the message efidisk read error, and then (I guess) it switched to the next boot option, which is Ubuntu, resulting in Grub showing up. From Grub, Ubuntu entry is working and so are both Windows entries. If I choose Ubuntu, it normally boots into Ubuntu. But if I choose Windows, it goes into Windows' boot manager. In Windows' boot manager, a menu shows up: Ubuntu. Ubuntu. Windows 8.1. If I choose Windows, it boots into Windows without any problem. If I choose Ubuntu, it boots into Grub (back to step 14). Here's my BootInfo Summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6698171/ Windows Boot Manager is clearly not working as expected; I can't directly boot into it and I can't boot into it from BIOS either (efidisk read error again). If I want to boot into Windows I need to boot into Grub first, which is the opposite of what I wanted. I need help at this point. What is the best thing I can do? Is there a more reliable and/or simpler way of acomplishing a satisfying dual-boot for this situation? Can someone provide a way for going back to step 8, where I had a more efficient dual-boot setup? If only I could undo what I did with Easy BCD and skip Windows' Boot Menu... Can someone provide a way to fix this mess? Thanks in advance and sorry for the length of this, I wanted to be exhaustive.

• Laptop screen is cracked, external monitor only mirroring the broken laptop screen

  I did something stupid. When my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop screen cracked and went all crazy and I couldn't see anything, I attached it to an external monitor and pressed Fn + F5 and it worked. But then I did something in the control panel that made the external screen look similar to the laptop screen. That made the external screen completely unusable too. In the control panel it was the last tab – something with "dual screens" I think. Is there anyway to reverse what did, turn off the laptop screen permanently and turn the external monitor into the primary? Remember that I can't see anything on the laptop screen. It is a complete goner – and because of what I did I can't see anything on the external monitor.

• Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

  I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop? • Dual-screen Multimedia Control Suite for Linux (like Screen Monkey)

  I'm looking for some linux software to manage and control a dual monitor/multi screen setup for use in professional-like presentations (ie: monitor1=control, monitor2=projector/audience). I have the dual-monitor configured with my gnome desktop running over both monitors (that's the easy part). What I'm looking for is a neat/seamless way to switch between, say, OpenOffice Impress, DVD Player, VLC live video, Lyricue, other software on monitor2. To have monitor2 shown to the audience and run neat presentations of DVDs, Slideshows, etc. whilst controlling it from monitor1. I can run slideshows, play a DVD on monitor2 (drag & drop VLC on monitor2, and go fullscreen) etc. but this is rather messy in a presentation environment. I found this software: Screen Monkey. Looks like an excellent windows equivalent for what I want to do. Is there anything similar for linux? For Gnome, KDE, anything else X based? Thanks, SamJ

• Dual boot 12.04 and W7 - keybaord and screen not responsive

  I installed 12.04 using WUBI on a working W7 64bit system. both KB and mouse work perfect during the BIOS boot, and on the bootmgr, I can select Windows 7 or Ubuntu to load. Once I select Ubuntu, the KB and mouse seem to loose their power (light on the mouse and Numlock leds go off) After couple of seconds, the screen gets blurry. The screen pops back at the Ubuntu login screen, the mouse gets activated (light works, as well as mouse pointer is moving) However, the keyboard is not responsive to any click, nor does any icon on the login screen. - Using the mouse, I can't select the virtual keyboard, nor the shutdown icon - like it's not accepting any mouse clicks. The following Q&A didn't answer: Keyboard not responding at login with 12.04 dual boot on toshiba satellite L775 which links to a post on the web I also tried 12.04 - Windows 7 Dual boot - not responding to keyboard in boot menu - that goes beyond the login screen, but still didnt' assist me. It's a wired USB KB The board is an Intel board, and there isn't even a PS/2 connection anymore. Tried moving around the USB's Tried removing the Mouse, and only have the KB. Neither helped.

• Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

  Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. • Dealing with three Windows partitions in dual boot installation

  For dual-boot installation of Ubuntu after Windows. Quoted from ubuntuguide If a Windows boot partition exists as a second NTFS partition, it should be left alone. If there is a Windows recovery partition also installed, it can also be left alone as long as there are only two NTFS partitions total on the hard drive (i.e. there is no NTFS boot partition as well). If there are a total of 3 NTFS partitions on the hard drive, then the third Windows NTFS partition (the recovery partition) should be removed after creating Recovery CDs from it (see here). In the last case where Windows has three partitions, I was wondering why it says the recovery partition shall be removed? Is it possible to keep the three and create another extended partition with several logical partitions for installing Ubuntu and dual-booting the two OSes? I plan to dual-boot install Ubuntu 10.04 with existing Windows 7. Following is the layout of the current partitions of my hard drive viewed from Windows 7: So must I remove the Lenovo_Recovery (Q:) partition for the same reason you give for the first question? • Mecer laptop gives me a white screen when I close the screen

  I'm having a very strange hardware issue with my Mecer m770u laptop with intel i7 quad core, etc... I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue with any other brand/model of laptop, and what I should fix/replace to solve it...? Basically when I close the screen of the laptop, the screen often goes completely white. If I open it slowly and smoothly again, the screen returns to normal. But if I close the screen when the computer is off, and then switch it on, it boots with a white screen, and opening it slowly/smoothly doesn't help. I have to then switch it on and off a few times before it returns to normal. Makes travelling with my laptop really difficult! Any suggestions?

• Using screen, commands like less and man don't clear the screen afterwards

  In contrast to this question I want the clearing of the screen re-enabled for less. It works fine in my xterm terminal under Cygwin/mintty or Gnome Terminal (both xterms). However, when inside a screen session, the clearing of the screen is somehow disabled. I tried several things, like screen -T xterm or putting the autonuke statement in my ~/.screenrc. Also, inside the screen session export TERM=xterm tset has no effect. So, now I'm out of ideas. Any help appreciated.
