• fingerprint-gui can not recognize my upek reader (147e:1002)

  I've got a new laptop which is Lenove's E420s. And I have encountered a big problem that I can't make the fingerprint reader work properly. I've also tried fingerprint-gui. But unfortunately, it's told that "No Device Found". Here is my screenshot: http://ge.tt/98Xg2WD/v/0 It's said that 147e:1002 is supported by fingerprint-gui on the official website. So, I'm curious about the situation. Anybody knows? P.S: I'm using gentoo, but I think this problem may not have anything to do with distribution since I compiled the source from official site.

• Open Source PDF reader for windows as an alternative to Adobe reader

  With the latest javascript vulnerabilities in Adobe reader and bloat it has aquired over the years, I've been thinking of moving the network I'm in charge of to a different product for PDF reading on Windows. The ideal PDF reader should be something that is: Small in size (Adobe reader is more than 200MB these days after installation). As secure by default as possible (For example, javascript disabled by default). Nice looking and easy to use interface. Not bloated with features (I just want to read PDFs, that's it). Does not install any toolbars/unwanted add ons/spyware. Does not display any ads while viewing PDFs. Preferably Open Source. (this pretty much ensures no ads). Full Unicode support. Idealy , something like evince from gnome, will be the best option, but unfortunately that's not available on Windows. Foxit is an option, as it is small, and has a nice interface. But it still has javascript enabled by default which might lead to vulnerabilities - and it installs a toolbar , and displays ads while reading PDFs which is distracting. There is a site dedicated to Open Source PDF readers, pdfreaders.org, however, the Windows pdf readers each have their problems, mostly the interface is not as convenient (as evince, adobe or foxit). Here's a list of all PDF software from WikiPedia. There's a "Viewers" section for each OS. What Windows PDF reader would you recommend ?

• My card reader doesn't show up at all, but previously did in 10.10

  I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. • Cannot install Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I have been trying to install Acrobat Reader on my Ubuntu 12.04.1. In the be;ggining, I tried to install it from the software-center, but it crashes with the report: (Reading database ... 189311 files and directories currently installed.)   When I click an e-mail address in Adobe Reader X, an Outlook e-mail window opens, even though Thunderbird is my standard e-mail client and assigned to the mailto: protocol. How can I make Adobe Reader X open e-mail links in Thunderbird? I'm using Windows 7. How to Change the Email Client in Adobe Reader doesn't seem to apply to this version of Adobe Reader, I don't see the drop-down menu of step 6.

• Link to RSS/Atom feed, relative, doesn't work in Firefox

  I have a weird problem. I generate a HTML page, hosted let's say at http://www.x.com/stuff which contains <head> <link type="application/atom+xml" rel="alternate" href="/stuff/feed"/> .. </head> The result is: In IE7 all works well - you can click on the feed icon in the browser and the feed is displayed In Firefox, view source, click on the linked /stuff/feed and you see the source of the feed, so that works as expected In Firefox, view the page (not source), then click on the feed icon in the address bar, I get an error that it can't retrieve the URL feed://http//www.x.com/stuff/feed So the problem is, that it's appending feed:// to the front of the URL and then taking out the colon : after the http. I understand that feed: is HTTP anyway so perhaps the adding of that isn't a big problem. But anyway, the fact is, that URL Firefox generates out of my <link> tag doesn't work. I have considered making the URL absolute, but I haven't found any evidence that those URLs have to be absolute, nor can I understand why that would be the case. And for various reasons it would be inconvenient in my code to generate an absolute URL. I can do it if necessary but I would prefer to see proof (e.g. specification, or Mozilla bug report) that it's necessary before making my code messy What do you think? Does anyone know of any evidence that the URL should be absolute? Or am I doing something else wrong? It seems such a simple/obvious tag, where nothing could go wrong, but I can't get it to work.

• Adobe Reader seems to use wrong lpr command when printing to CUPS

  Hi, on my debian lenny box, printing via CUPS works fine, e.g. using OpenOffice. When printing from Adobe Reader, however, stuff doesn't work. It appears the problem happens during the first step of the process, when Adobe Reader talks to lpr. I guess this is the reason because I get an error message from Adobe Reader like: The following error occurred while printing... 'usage: lpr [-cdfghlmnpqrstv] [-#num] [-1234 font] [-C class] [-i [numcols]] [-J job] [-Pprinter] [-T title] [-U user] [-wnum] [name ...]' Looks like lpr complains about the way Adobe Reader talks to it, doesn't it? This happens no matter if I print to my laser or to CUPS-PDF. It seems like Adobe Reader sends a command like lpr -P CUPS-PDF -o PageSizeA4 -o blah -o blah Is there anything I can configure to make things work?

• Adobe Reader (acroread) 64 bit looks bad

  I installed acroread on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit with gdebi (also tried dpkg and via repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ precise partner"). The result looks bad. For example the open-dialog is out of place, the folder-icons are green and the buttons are not rounded. Actually when I start acroread from the command-line, I get several messages and warnings: Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module" Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine" Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module" I remember, that I had this problem, whenever I used a 64bit-Ubuntu (even Ubuntu 12.04), but not when I used a 32bit-Ubuntu.

• Adobe Reader not loading form content

  We have an FDL file which is used to offer an online application possibility. The FDL is filled out and sent to a mailbox. When I open the received file, Adobe Reader starts, loads the document in Internet Explorer (had to change my default browser because it doesn't work in chrome - the customer uses IE as default) and displays a warning that Adobe Reader has blocked the connection to the server where the initial document is saved: I can then click on "Trust this document once" (translated by me!) or "Add this host to trusted hosts" (also translated by me!). The second option doesn't work at all. The first option works but is a little bit annoying. I looked into Adobe Readers options (Edit - "Voreinstellungen" in german / the last option - Security (advanced)) and found the possibility to add hosts, files and directories or allow Adobe Reader to use the "Trusted Websites" list from Internetoptions. When I add the website either to Trusted Websites or the trusted list in Adobe Readers options, the warning doesn't pop up but the content in the prefilled (by the applicant) input boxes of the document doesn't show up on Windows 7 but it does show up on Windows XP. This Screenshot shows the settings window described in the last paragraph. The big input box at the bottom normally holds the trusted files/directories/hosts list. System Information: Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Adobe Reader X multiple IE versions (mine is latest but there's also IE 7 or 8) How do I get Adobe Reader to load the content of the form? This behaviour can be reproduced on a PC. When opening an fdf from a command line the form fields are blank even though there is data in the fdf and the pdf is located in a mnaully entered trsuted folder. Steps to reproduce: Clean install a Windows 7 PC (or use a virtual box) Map a network drive to a shared folder with a subfolder e.g. c:\test\docs becomes m:\docs Set security permissions to allow full control to everyone Add an fdf and a matching pdf file in the subfolder Manually add m:\docs to each of the trusted folders in the trust manager registry settings Ensure that Enhanced Security is on Run a command line to open the fdf file Expected result: pdf is opened in Adobe Reader with form fields filled out with data Actual results: pdf is opened with blank fields 'Yellow bar' appears asking to add document to trusted locations It appears that Adobe Reader XI is ignoring the privileged locations entries in the registry. Adding the document via the 'yellow bar' adds the individual document, with the same folder, to the privileged locations but means that the process has to be repeated for every document that needs to be opened from the folder.

• Get Pop Up Notifications for Your RSS Feeds with Feed Notifier

This free Windows application runs in the system tray and delivers pop-up notifications to your desktop when your subscribed RSS feeds are updated. Download and install Feed Notifier. (Download link below) When you are finished installing, the Feed Notifier Preferences window will open. Click on the Add… button to add an RSS feed. Copy and paste the Feed URL into the text box and click Next. Choose your polling interval. This is how often your feed will be checked for new items. You can set your polling interval for days, hours, minutes, or even seconds. Click FInish. At your configured interval, Feed Notifier will check your feeds for new items. If new items are present, they will pop up above your system tray.  You’ll get an intro portion of the article. Simply Click the headline in the feed pop up… …to open the full article in your default browser. Setting Preferences Open the preferences of Feed Notifier, by going to Start > All Programs > Feed Notifier, or right clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Preferences. You can also change the size of the display, the theme, and the amount of content displayed.   The Options tab offers additional configurations like article caching and using a proxy server. Filter tab allows you to filter in or out certain content. To add a filter click Add…   … then type in the filter rule. You can even choose to apply it to only certain feeds. Click OK. Feed Notifier will display on the filters tab the number of times the filter is applied. Click OK when finished.   You can scroll though the articles by using the forward and back buttons at the lower left, or use the play / pause buttons to move though the articles in a slideshow-type fashion.   Feed Notifier is nice way to get your updated feeds directly to your desktop in a timely fashion. It’s supports all RSS and Atom feeds and features a clean look and feel with plenty of customizable options.   I currently use Google Reader for all my feeds and am looking for an alternative. My only requirement is that the service store a copy of the text of the feed just like Google does. If the feed site is inaccessible to any computer I am at as long as the reader site is available I can see the feed. Ok, so as it turns out I apparently do have another requirement, that it be a cloud solution.

• Windows 7 Group Policy blocking Adobe Reader

  A few weeks ago, my company blocked Adobe Reader due to an unpatched security issue. However, we recently moved one of our computers to a project that didn't require access to the corporate network, and IT gave us the green light to override Group Policy and re-enable Adobe Reader. However, this is something we've been unable to achieve. We've tried the following (in no particular order), all to no avail: Ran the program as administrator Renamed the program (the blocking is likely signature-based) Deleted registry.pol Changed the value of "Start" in \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc to "4" (to prevent group policy from applying, even though it's no longer on the corporate domain) Checked SRP settings under Local Security Policy - nothing was there Checked AppLocker settings under Local Security Policy - nothing there either Incidentally, I found a few registry keys with descriptions referring to Adobe Reader being blocked. I deleted all of them, but it didn't help. Changed the permission settings of the program Re-installed Adobe Reader Is there anything I missed, short of doing a clean install?

• Dialog box in Adobe reader is scrambled

  I use win 7 and Adobe reader 11. After updating from ADobe reader 9 to 10 (automatically) I can´t see a proper dialog boxx when i print the PDF. EIther it har veryyyyy big letters or the text is missing in the Printing option box. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times, but there is no difference. I have also tried to download the sherife sans font. When I hade Adoobe reader 8, there was no problem. On an other computer I had the same problem, but I could resolve it by uninstalling and reinstallation Adobe reader. Rutred

• Google Reader offline sync (Gears) not syncing, stuck at 0%

  I'm using Google Chrome, and for some reason starting over the weekend or Friday, I haven't been able to get Google Reader to sync for offline reading. When I hit the sync button, it just starts spinning and says: "Status: Downloading 2000 items...0% completed. Please wait..." There's no CPU, network, or disk activity on my machine, and it remains in this state indefinitely. I tried going to Chrome Settings, uninstalling Reader, navigating to Reader, and reinstalling Reader as a Gears app, to no avail. Any hints? Thanks in advance.

  After posting some test blog entries, I then remove them from my blog. however, once loaded by google reader, they never disappear from it. Even if I sign up to my blog feed from a different account, they still appear, so it seems that they are centrally cached by google reader. How can I force google reader to delete them from cache?

• Hardening Word and Reader against exploits

  I have recently heard a lot about exploits for PDF and DOC files on Windows, which when opened in Reader or Word would infect the computer. I'm assuming most of those exploits rely on some kind of active content, I've heard that Reader allows JavaScript for example. I already have antivirus, but I've heard they often don't catch those types of exploits, so I want to try a little proactive defense. Is there a way to harden Reader and Word by disabling plugins or options that are often used by exploits?

I google for RSS feed for gas prices and bumped onto Motortrend's gas price feed http://www.motortrend.com/widgetrss/gas- The feed seems to be fine, but the price value seem to be depcited in alphatbets as below Chevron 3921 Irvine Blvd, Irvine, CA 92602 (0.0 miles) Monday, May 10, 2010 9:16 AM Regular: ZEIECHK Plus: ZEHGIHC Premium: ZEGJEGE Diesel: N/A How do I interpret these value to come up with a value for the gas price? Or is it internal to Motortrend's and cannot be used elsewhere?

The extension Facebook Unsocial Reader smartly rewrites Facebook links in such a way that you will be able to access content of links without adding Social Reader Apps to your account. To rewrite the links, the extension cleverly uses Google I’m Feeling Lucky service and searches for the article’s title. The first search result of Google is almost perfect in identifying the original article link.
