• Can I use a Smart Array P410 controller on a HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server?

  This link says the HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server only supports Smart Array E200, E500, P400 and P800 controllers. Can I use a Smart Array P410 instead? Currently the server has only the default internal controller, I need an additional one for better performance and to support additional drives (the default controller only supports 4, with a Smart Array controller all 8 bays can be used). The disks are SATA ones.

• Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

  The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!

• Is there a fix for an iMac G5 annoying screen pattern issue?

  It's probably a hardware issue, but I was hoping that someone might know of other options to try. My iMac G5 (the revision just before the built-in iSight was introduced) has developed an annoying pattern of short/wide rectangles in a pinkish hue across the screen. I've followed Apple's instructions to ensure that the logic board hasn't failed (by resetting the SMU and watching the internal LEDs light-up). I suspect either the LCD or video card has failed. Below are two screen shots, one taken by my iPhone which exhibits the problem and a snapshot taking from the faulty iMac which looks fine.

• 2 Computers, same network, different outgoing speeds when uploading to internet?

  I have 2 work machines in my office, a PowerMac G5 and a MacBook Air. Both behind an IPCop firewall. The PowerMac is connected through a gigabit switch, the MacBook Air is connected through a Netgear 802.11g access point that is then plugged into the gigabit switch. There is also a FreeNAS box, both machines are able to read and write files to it at close to their pipe speeds. The main problem is when I am trying to upload files to the internet at large. The G5 is only hitting 0.1 - 0.25 Mbps. The Macbook is able to hit 2-3 Mbps. The setup (G5 / IPCop / Network) has been the same for 5 years. The issues with the internet speed started about 3 months ago. I hadn't tested on the Macbook at this point. I had complained to the ISP, they said their modem needed a firmware update, did that nothing changed. Reset IPCop, turned off squid, etc. No changes. The ISP switched the office over to a better plan with a theoretical 6 Mbps up, still no change. At this point I tried testing the Macbook, and lo and behold there's the speed. But why? I have tried changing out everything, cables, switches, using another ethernet port on the G5, wiping the system, using DHCP, using manual IPs, changing DNS servers, etc. Nothing works. I figured that if there was something horribly wrong with the network, then internally I would find a similar issue, but that is perfect. iperf, ping, etc show no dropped packets and near saturation of the internal network. • NTBackup (on WS2k3) fails to backup remote server (WS2k8R2) with " Error: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access."

  We run an NTBackup job on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 with all updates (as of Q4-2011). It works well backing up two WS2k3 servers as well as the backup server itself. However, we have been unable to successfully back up our Windows Server 2008 R2 machine ("G5-01"). It often runs for about 2GB worth of backup and then dies out with one of the below error messages. It should be more like 20GB for the full server. We have tried using the admin share (C$), an explicitly shared drive share, UNC and mapped drives. The result is the same each time, the only thing that varies is the amount of stuff backed up before it chokes. We've also run NTBbackup from the UI interface, from the command line and as a scheduled task. We are backing up to 400/800GB tapes and they have plenty of space available on them (blank media). Error: \\G5-01\c is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: \\G5-01\c$ is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: Y: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: Could not access or create backup catalog files. Verify that you have full access to the working folder and there is disk space available. The job is run as Administrator and we have no problems logging onto the server and transferring files. The Event Log on the WS2k8 is not much help, as it has success audits for each login. All of the hardware involved (HP DL360 G3, HP LTO Ultrium 3, Adaptec 39320A) has the latest supported drivers. We've seemingly tried a bunch of different options but are wondering where to look next to resolve the backup issue. We've been super happy with our reliable schedule task for years but this one is stumping us!

  Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... • Concatenation yields error with underscore

  I am trying to create a macro that brings in the name of the sheet and combine it with text. For example, for sheet one, I want it to say "ThisIs_Sheet1_Test" in I5 of Sheet1. There are several sheets but it should work for all of them. What is wrong with my code? I think the underscore might be ruining it all. • Which server to choose? [closed]

  I have telecom applications that I want to run on a server(I have chosen HP server), there are so many types of hp servers i.e DL380 (g3,g4 ....), blade , entry level server. I've surfed the web and nothing is helping me choose one that suites me, what I have is telecom application made in PHP and C. • Unable to boot with Windows 2008 DVD / USB Key

  Hi everyone, I am trying to install Windows 2008 server on a HP Proliant DL180 G5. There is no built-in DVD reader so I need to use my LaCie USB one. When I put the CD in and boot from the USB DVD on the server, I get the error message: Boot Failed! Please insert boot media in selected boot device. So I tried with another Windows bootable CD and still no luck. What I've done then, I copied the installation DVD on my 16go USB key. Again, impossible to boot from the USB Key. I have 2 147go SAS 15k HDD on my server. They are not showing in the Bios. I was wondering if this is a reason why nothing will boot on it. I am trying to find a way to deploy Windows 2008 server on my HP server as soon as possible. If you guys have ideas, feel free to let me know :) Best regards, David. • Input/output error reading USB backup drive on CentOS 6.4

Or more to the point, what problem does this indicate? /var/log/messages said this: Oct 21 14:57:54 g5 kernel: EXT4-fs error (device sda1): ext4_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal Oct 21 14:57:54 g5 kernel: EXT4-fs (sda1): Remounting filesystem read-only But...read-only is something different than 'throw an io error'... After unmounting to try fsck on it, I had someone on-site look at it, and the drive was not spun up, and had a slow-flashing light, which I believe means it was in a power-suspend mode. So I had them unplug and replug the USB cable, and now (before remounting) it says: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) /dev/sda1: clean, 2805106/61046784 files, 181934167/244182016 blocks I then mount it and now ls works and df reports: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 917G 680G 191G 79% /mnt/backup What would cause it to go into such a state without being asked to? Why all the weird behaviour, and now it appears to not be corrupt?

So when i query for Names in Categories [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"CategoryRelationship.@count != 0"] there are 8 elements and when [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"CategoryRelationship.@count = 0"] there are 56 elements. What is going one here?

The problem is that HP doesn't offer Ubuntu Proliant Support Packs for these particular models. Would you upgrade regardless, skipping the PSPs altogether? Are there alternative hardware monitoring tools that would match the functionality of the PSPs? Is there a hack to install the PSP RPMs on an Ubuntu system?

The system just stays in "Broadcast message from root (tty0). The system is going for reboot NOW" Neither halt, poweroff, reboot nor init 6 works.

The disk performance I am getting on this box and another identical one does not come close to matching the same two drives running through a cheap 3ware RAID card. Any idea? I have played with the cache settings, but nothing allows me to get the same results. It seems like the Smart Array controller is the bottleneck.

  the server model: HP Poliant DL160 G5, both servers have identical product ID. for some reason one of the servers have 4GB ram reserved. it shows in the memory tab on the Resource monitor as "Hardware Reserved". I've googled it a bit and found some post related to msconfig boot parameters (but mine are properly set) and some post related to memory remap option in the bios but it is not available in my servers bios so in a bit lost... help?

  I'm currently using HP Proliant DL120 G5 servers running VMWare ESXi 4 to run server VM's. They are connecting to an iSCSI SAN for the shared storage. I'd like to implement a delayed boot of these hosts servers so that they don't boot up and try to connect to the SAN before the SAN is ready for connections after a power failure. Does anyone know of a good way to do this?

• Preventing RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries)

  I am 16 years old and I love to program and playing the piano. It's not uncommon that I'm bashing away on my mouse and keyboard all day long. I do not feel any pains doing so. Yet I am still worried, because I often hear from people that they can never type for longer then 10 minutes again without getting severe pains. Given my two hobbies, programming and playing the piano that worries me a lot. A LG Flatron L194wt screen (too small IMO, getting a new one soon) Should I be worrying about RSI/similar health issues? If yes, what can/should I do about it?

• Can't boot freshly burned Ubuntu cd

  So I just burned a Ubuntu 12.04.1 powerpc .iso on a cd for my iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and it won't even recognize the cd. I burned it on my dad's Windows 7 laptop as the process is way easier (just 2 clicks). Mac OS X 10.4.11 gives me an error when it starts and when the CD is in saying "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". What's funny is that I burned a Ubuntu Minimal .iso on a CD and it would totally read that and even boot it though it gave me some errors afterwards and I couldn't install. I even tried going into openfirmware and hitting boot cd:,\tbxi but I get the error "Warning sector size mismatch can't OPEN cd:,\tbxi Can't open device or file" Was there something wrong with the .iso I burned? Mac OS X 10.4.11 won't even mount that .iso it tells me that the HFS file system is corrupt or something, but I know the .iso doesn't contain HFS file system. Any help? I downloaded the .iso from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-powerpc.iso

• How do I install Gyachi on PPC Ubuntu 12.04.1?

  So I'm trying to install Gyachi on my iMac G5 runnig Ubuntu 12.04.1 but I can't seem to find a package that works on powerpc interface. I did find some powerpc enterprise Linux.rpm builds on the internet but I have no idea how to install them. This is the lin: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/5/ppc/gyachi-1.1.71-5.el5.ppc.html Does anyone know how to install that, or would it work? Is there any Skype alternative that has both audio and video for Ubuntu? In my knowledge, Gyachi is the only one that at least does both audio and video for Yahoo.
