  I know there are lots of posts for internationalization, but this is something I didn't found while searching. I have a PHP Web application, which is pretty big right now. It's developed actively for 4 years and wasn't built with internationalization in mind. Text is everywhere - in plain HTML, in PHP variables, in echo's, in the DB... Now I'm familiar with the concept of gettext and this is what i plan to use for the internationalization project of the application. However the app is not written in English and here is my question: Should I first translate everything to English while wrapping every string in gettext() function, or I can use my native language as a base? P.S. also any quick suggestions (links maybe) on making my life easier with the whole i18n project will be greatly appreciated!

• How to configure for multiple gettext domains with babel, pylons, setuptools

  While trying to internationalize my pylons web and mobile application, 'myapp', Im finding that I would like to keep separate gettext pot files for separate domains. There will be common msgid values for both web and mobile users and there will also be unique msgid values that are only translated for web or mobile users. Im expecting localized msgstrs for mobile users will be different (more terse) than the localized msgstrs for normal web users. The environment is like: the same myapp/controllers will be used for both mobile and web requests. mobile users will have their pages rendered from myapp/templates/mobile normal web users will have their pages rendered from myapp/templates/web What happens by default: I end up with myapp/i18n/myapp.pot and myapp/i18n/*/LC_MESSAGES/myapp.[pm]o files that contain msgid values from controllers and both sets of templates. What Im looking for: to set the gettext domain for the user's session when I decide which templates will render their responses. myapp's msgids from controllers and web template extract into myapp/i18n/web.pot myapp's msgids from controllers and mobile templates extract into myapp/i18n/mobile.pot babel's init_catalog, update_catalog, and compile_catalog runs deal with these separate domains and create separate po and mo localization files. Where Im lost: configuring myapp's setup.cfg and setup.py to deal with separate gettext domains so that I can direct extracted msgid values into a particular pot file based on the path of the python and template files.

  I am working on a large multilingual website and I am considering different approaches for making it multilingual. The possible alternatives I can think of are: The Gettext functions with generation of .po files One MySQL table with the translations and a unique string ID for each text PHP-files with arrays containing the different translations with unique string IDs As far as I have understood the Gettext functions should be most efficient, but my requirement is that it should be possible to change a text string in the original reference language (English) without the other translations of that string automatically reverting back to English just because a couple of words changed. Is this possible with Gettext? What is the least resource demanding solution? Is using the Gettext functions or PHP files with arrays more or less equally resource demanding? Any other suggestions for more efficient solutions?

  I am new using xgettext command So I don't know what am I doing wrong. I put the command xgettext -n *.php -o --output='/home/public/sample' in my script but I get an error: xgettext: cannot create output file "--output=/home/public/sample": No such file or directory But when I run xgettext -n *.php - messages.po file gets created in my current directory! Is there a way to specify the location where to create messages.po file?

• Passing.getText() String to another class

  I'm currently working on a first year university project and I have a problem, although I doubt it's a very complicated one, but I've been searching and I just can't find a suitable answer to it. The problem concerns two classes. A gui class (class1) and another class (class2). I have a JTextField in class1 and am trying to pass through the .getText() value to class2 and store it in a String type variable. The current code I'm trying to achieve this with is the following: (Class1) private JTextField textField = new JTextField("Something"); ... public String getTextFieldString() { return textField.getText(); } (Class2) private c1 Class1 = new Class1(); private String s = new String(); ... s = c1.getTextFieldString(); I'm pretty new to coding, I've read that maybe I need to pass through an argument somewhere and I assume that's because textField is not static in itself, it changes when somebody enters a new value. • Switch gettext translated language with original language

  Hi everyone, I started my PHP application with all text in German, then used gettext to extract all strings and translate them to English. So, now I have a .po file with all msgids in German and msgstrs in English. I want to switch them, so that my source code contains the English as msgids. There are numerous reasons for this: More translators will know English, so it is only appropriate to serve them up a file with msgids in English. I could always switch the file before I give it out and after I receive it It would help me to write English object & function names and comments if the content text was also English. I'd like to do that, so the project is more open to other Open Source collaborators (more likely to know English than German). I could do this manually and this is the sort of task where I anticipate it will take me more time to write an automated routine for it (because I'm very bad with shell scripts) than do it by hand. But I also anticipate despising every minute of manual computer labour (feels like a oxymoron, right?) like I always do. Has someone done this before? I figured this would be a common problem, but couldn't find anything. Many thanks ahead.   I have made this calculator program in Java. This works well only when two numbers are calculated at one time. That means to get the sum of 1+2+3 you have to go this way : press 1 press + press 2 press = press + press 3 press = and it calculates it as 6. But I want to program this so that I can get the answer by: press 1 press + press 2 press + press 3 press = but this gives the answer 5!!! • What are the requirements for gettings django translations to work?

  Hi, I am hosting several djangosites on a CentOS 5 box. But I'm having difficulties with translations. So first i had to upgrade the gettext package from 0.14 to 0.16, but that didn't help. Now i can make and compile tranlsations files with the managment commands, but the translations does not show. I am sure that the translation files are located at the right place since they work with the same setup on a local installation, and django's own translation files does not work. (e.g the admin is not translated). What could i be missing in my server setup that makes this happen?

  I've trying to use Zend_Translate from Zend Framework I am using "POEdit" to generate "gettext" translation files. My files are under /www/mysite.com/webapps/includes/locale (this path is in my include path). I have: pictures.en.mo pictures.en.po (I plan on having pictures.es.mo soon) It all works fine if I manually do addTranslation() for each file. However I want to use the automatic file scanning method. • Where to translate message strings - in the view or in the model?

  We have a multilingual (PHP) application and use gettext for i18n. There are a few classes in the backend/model that return messages or message formats for printf(). We use xgettext to extract the strings that we want to translate. We apply the gettext function T_() in the frontend/view - this seems to be where it belongs. So far we kept the backend clean from T_() calls, this way we can also unit-test messages. So in the frontend we have something like echo T_($mymodel->getMessage()); or printf(T_($mymodel->getMessageFormat()), $mymodel->getValue()); This makes it impossible to apply xgettext to extract the strings, unless we put some dummy T_("my message %s to translate") call in the MyModel class. So this leads to the more general question: Do you apply translation in the backend classes, resp. where do you apply translation and how do you keep track of the strings which you have to translate? (I am aware of Question: poedit workaround for dynamic gettext.)

  Suppose a simple phrase "In" in English needs to be interpreted as "" - empty string in Russian. Is is possible to specify that in the .po file? What normally happens if you set msgstr "" - you'll get the untranslated key, but I want to get nothing in that specific case. Here is a use case: I have underneath a giant search bar a set of buttons to select questions (for a Q&A site) from particular scopes - like so: (in English) In: [all] [unanswered] [my own] (in Russian I want) [???] [??? ???????] [???] It just sounds more natural. Yes I can leave out In for english, but I don't want to and I do not want to put button (things in [] are buttons) html into the 'po' file. Thanks!

• Error while installing dependencies for PyGTK on Mac OS 10.6.3

  I tried to install the following dependencies for PyGTK 2.16.0 (the Python GIMP Tool Kit) on Mac OS 10.6.3: glib 2.25.5 gettext-0.18 libiconv-1.13.1 When I tried to install glib, I got the following error message: gconvert.c:55:2: error: #error GNU libiconv not in use but included iconv.h is from libiconv The libiconv web page talks about a circular dependency between gettext and libiconv---build one, then build the other, then build the first again. I tried to do this, though possibly incorrectly. (Will the following work: make distclean; ./configure; make; sudo make install?) The author of a posting had the same problem, and he solved it by installing libiconv-1.13.1. Could anyone explain the error in more detail, and how to correct it?

• Who Knows AppWeb HTTP Server And It's Embedded PHP?

  Hi all, on my search for a fast but comfortable web server I dropped into the homepage of EmbedThis(TM) AppWeb(TM) HTTP server. This one has 2 licencse models, GPLv2 and a commercial one with support. On the first view it looks good: the footprint is not too big, it is fast and it has a lot of configuration otions. The most important thing would be a fast PHP execution using a built-in PHP library. Unfortunately this PHP library doesn't include every option, especially "gettext" which one I need for I18N. My target platform is Linux on an embedded device with an ARM based CPU. Does anybody have experiences with the issues mentioned above? Kind regards, Andi

• How to generate a .po file?

  On Windows using WAMPserver (Apache, MySql, Php) I have the following: //test.php if (!defined('LC_MESSAGES')) define('LC_MESSAGES', 6); $lang = "sv"; putenv("LANG=$lang"); setlocale(LC_ALL, $lang); $domain = "messages"; bindtextdomain($domain, "./locale"); textdomain($domain); echo _("This is a string"); It works fine, i.e. it outputs "This is a string" which means I have gettext correctly setup up. But HOW in the world do I create a .po-file? I downloaded POEdit but I can't see how to make this happen with that software. ANy help is greatly appreciated!

  i have some old php files which i'd like to convert to use gettext. those files have a content like this : $LD = 'Some String'; $Another = 'some other ~n~ string'; i have to substitute all the $LD, $Another in the files where they are declared with something like : _('Some string'); hacking a bit a created some sort of regexp to find the declarations, my aim was to use sed and awk to do the replaces..but i don't have any clue on how to do those substitutions ... any help ...

• Django internationalization for admin pages - translate model name and attributes

  Django's internationalization is very nice (gettext based, LocaleMiddleware), but what is the proper way to translate the model name and the attributes for admin pages? I did not find anything about this in the documentation: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/i18n/internationalization/ http://www.djangobook.com/en/2.0/chapter19/ I would like to have "???????? ????? ??? ?????????" instead of "???????? order ??? ?????????". Note, the 'order' is not translated. First, I defined a model, activated USE_I18N = True in settings.py, run django-admin makemessages -l ru. No entries are created by default for model names and attributes. Grepping in the Django source code I found: $ ack "Select %s to change" contrib/admin/views/main.py 70: self.title = (self.is_popup and ugettext('Select %s') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name) or ugettext('Select %s to change') % force_unicode(self.opts.verbose_name)) So the verbose_name meta property seems to play some role here. Tried to use it: class Order(models.Model): subject = models.CharField(max_length=150) description = models.TextField() class Meta: verbose_name = _('order') Now the updated po file contains msgid 'order' that can be translated. So I put the translation in. Unfortunately running the admin pages show the same mix of "???????? order ??? ?????????". I'm currently using Django 1.1.1. Could somebody point me to the relevant documentation? Because google can not. ;-) In the mean time I'll dig deeper into the django source code...

• Internationalizing a Python 2.6 application via Babel

  We're evaluating Babel 0.9.5 [1] under Windows for use with Python 2.6 and have the following questions that we we've been unable to answer through reading the documentation or googling. 1) I would like to use an _ like abbreviation for ungettext. Is there a concencus on whether one should use n_ or N_ for this? n_ does not appear to work. Babel does not extract text. N_ appears to partially work. Babel extracts text like it does for gettext, but does not format for ngettext (missing plural argument and msgstr[ n ].) 2) Is there a way to set the initial msgstr fields like the following when creating a POT file? I suspect there may be a way to do this via Babel cfg files, but I've been unable to find documentation on the Babel cfg file format. "Project-Id-Version: PROJECT VERSION\n" "Language-Team: en_US \n" 3) Is there a way to preserve 'obsolete' msgid/msgstr's in our PO files? When I use the Babel update command, newly created obsolete strings are marked with #~ prefixes, but existing obsolete message strings get deleted. Thanks, Malcolm [1] http://babel.edgewall.org/
