• Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • 12.04: Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • Hit Detection When rotating the camera

  This bug/feature has been plaguing me for a while and i want to know the best way to fix it. I'm testing simple hit detection with a wall, like: if (Forward button) if(Inv.w.z < -49 || Inv.w.z > 49) pos.z = 0.0f; else if(Inv.w.x < -49 || Inv.w.x > 49) pos.z = 0.0f; else pos.z = +1.0f; where Inv.w. is the camera positions. Now obviously when i now hit that certain point i can no longer move away from the wall or anywhere in fact. How can i change this code to allow for the camera to be turned away from the wall so therefore i should be allowed to move? for example, the player hits the wall and i cant move until i turn around or to the side? I know its something to do with velocity but im pretty new to this so please bare with me if this is easy.

  I am a user of a free Google Analytics account and i'm slightly concerned that I may be approaching the 10,000,000 hit (Pageviews, Events etc) per month. Google state in their documentation: These limits apply to the Web Property / Property / Tracking ID. 10 million hits per month per property If you go over this limit, the Google Analytics team might contact you and ask you upgrade to Premium or implement client sampling to reduce the amount of data being sent to Google Analytics. However, I note that there is nothing to say that you can review or check up on your current usage for the month. I have administrator access to the Google Analytics account, but I see no feature that lets me check up on my monthly usage. I don't know if Google offer this, either by means of the admin interface or via their support channels - but it would certainly be a useful feature. Is there anyway for a free GA user to obtain this information?

  I would like to crawl a publicly available site (and one that's legal to crawl) for a personal project. From a brief trial of the crawler, I gathered that my program hits the server with a new HTTPRequest 8 times in a second. At this rate, as per my estimate, to obtain the full set of data I need about 60 full days of crawling. While the site is legal to crawl, I understand it can still be unethical to crawl at a rate that causes inconvenience to the regular traffic on the site. What I'd like to understand here is -- how high is 8 hits per second to the server I'm crawling? Could I possibly do 4 times that (by running 4 instances of my crawler in parallel) to bring the total effort down to just 15 days instead of 60? How do you find the maximum hit-rate a web-server supports? What would be the theoretical (and ethical) upper-limit for the crawl-rate so as to not adversely affect the server's routine traffic?

• How to Make Sure your Company Don't Go Underwater if Your Programmers are Hit by Bus

  I have a few programmers under me, they are all doing very great and very smart obviously. Thank you very much. But the problem is that each and every one of them is responsible for one core area, which no one else on the team have foggiest idea on what it is. This means that if anyone of them is taken out, my company as a business is dead because they aren't replaceable. I'm thinking about bringing in new programmers to cover them, just in case they are hit by a bus, or resign or whatever. But I afraid that The old programmers might actively resist the idea of knowledge transfer, fearing that a backup might reduce their value. I don't have a system to facilitate technology transfer between different developers, so even if I ask them to do it, I've no assurance that they will do it properly. My question is, How to put it to the old programmers in such they would agree What are systems that you use, in order to facilitate this kind of "backup"? I can understand that you can do code review, but is there a simple way to conduct this? I think we are not ready for a full blown, check-in by check-in code review.

  I migrated my site from its old domain over a month ago. I followed Google Webmaster Tools completely, including 301 redirects from every existing URL to the new domain, and then submitting a change of address. Traffic continued as normal, but then a few days after submitting the change of address traffic plummeted to about 20-30% of what it was previously. Most of my traffic comes from organic search, and I can see that for the keywords I had targeted before and performed well with and am now ranking much much lower for. I understand that links to the old site will now be pointing to the latter which means that rankings for some keywords attributed to the old home page will take a hit, but even on other pages that seem to fit in exactly the same page structure as the previous site I have seen a drop in rankings.

• I want to hit Apex SQL with a big stick

  <Whinge> Thought id just have a little whinge about this product which caused me a load of grief the other day..... So the background was that my development machine had a completely full hard disk which I needed to sort out.  Upon investigation I found the issue was that the msdb database had managed to get very large. This was caused because a long time ago (and I cant even remember why) I tried out Apex SQL.  After a few days I decided to uninstall it and thought nothing more of it.  What I didnt realise was that uninstalling it doesnt actually uninstall it (and it doesnt inform you about this), but there was still some assemblies left on my machine.  Everytime SQL Server was running it was starting the Apex SQL Connection monitor which was then running in the background and regularly recording information in the msdb database.  Over time it had recorded enough to fill the disk.   After integrating the graphics assets to my application, I noticed that when the textures are compressed they look very bad compared to truecolor. This happens to all the textures and it did not seem to help changing the texture type to GUI nor did it help to switch the 32-bit display buffering on. Does using truecolor textures make the application much heavier to run? Or does it just increase the size of the .APK? Are there alternatives to getting a good texture quality and a smaller texture size instead of using truecolor?

• Almost time to hit the road again

  I’ve had a few months of not much traveling, but now that the weather is improving… conference season is starting up again. That means it’s time for me to start hitting the road. In June, I have Tech Ed 2010 in New Orleans, LA. I lived in New Orleans for several years, both as military and civilian and I have a few friends still down there. I haven’t been there since before Hurricane Katrina, so I have mixed feelings about returning… but I am still looking forward to it. Also in June, I have Codestock in Knoxville, TN. Codestock is one of my favorite events, primarily because of the excellent people that speak there and also attend sessions. It’s a great mix of people and technologies. Sometime in July or August, I’m headed to Austin, TX for a couple days. I don’t know the exact date yet, but if you have an event down there in that timeframe, let me know and maybe we can sort something out. In September, I’m heading to Seattle for my first PAX (Penny Arcade Expo.)  I’m going strictly as an attendee and it looks like a LOT of fun. Really excited to check it out. Also in September, I’m headed to Omaha for the Heartland Developers Conference. This is a FANTASTIC event, and certainly one of my local favorites. (I guess local is relative, it’s about a 6 hour drive.) In addition to speaking on WP7, I’ll be doing a series of hands on labs on XNA they day before the conference starts, so that should be a lot of fun as well.   In addition to all this stuff, I have my own XNA User Group to take care of. In August, Andy “The Z-Man” Dunn is coming to speak and check out the various food on a stick offerings at the Minnesota State Fair!

• How to make xlock use the first key I hit as a part of my password

  I just switched from Arch Linux to Ubuntu 10.10. I'm running the Fluxbox window manager, and I use xlockmore to lock my screen with the following key shortcut: 192 :Exec xlock-mode marquee +usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The problem I'm having is that xlock is definitely not using my first key as part of my password. Instead, it uses some randomized fade pattern to fade to the password screen. I find this highly annoying, as when I get back to my desk and start entering my password it doesn't register password characters until the fade pattern is complete. I've also tried the following modifications with no difference: 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The first example worked flawlessly on Arch. Does Ubuntu have some sort of system default that you can't override on the command-line?

• Ubuntu 12.10 installation. Hit or miss Booting

  I just recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 12.10. I also completely wiped the laptop. The Ubuntu OS will only boot part of the time but never on the first time. Always, the first start up will automatically go to a purple screen and stay there. At first I waited for 45 minutes and nothing changed. Once I held down the power button to turn it off, I turned it back on to see the Asus screen followed by the grub menu. I can select "Ubuntu" and then there is a white box blinking in the top left corner. Then, it will either keep blinking or transfer to the Ubuntu loading screen(everything works fine if it gets to the loading screen). This has never happened before with prior versions of Ubuntu. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks!
