  • Newly installed Ubuntu 12.10 and weird graphics

    My machine: 2 GB RAM Intel Pentium Dual core E2180 @ 2 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE My friend had recommended Ubuntu to me and I thought I might as well get used to Linux in anticipation for my Raspberry Pi. He said that Wubi was the easiest way to install and I installed it using Wubi. On my first ever boot up of Ubuntu from the Windows Bootloader started normally, and I logged on in a normal fashion, and my desktop loaded normally. I then pressed the Windows key/Power key and everything went wrong. Random lines of yellow and blue appeared on my screen, and changed location when I moved my mouse. The lines stayed for a few seconds and then partially went to I could sort of use my computer. I tried moving my mouse and the entire desktop looked like it broke apart, fragments of it just scatter across my screen at random angles. I could move my mouse and the pointer would move but clicking did nothing. I had to turn off my machine by removing the plug. I would love to get off Windows, but at least the doesn't completely mess up the graphics, and is relatively usable. Please help me solve this....

  • Besxt Text-to-Speech Solution for my Website

    I'm working on the 'Ease of Access' section of my website with the options to increase the font-size displayed on pages to a minimum, invert colours and whatnot. I wish to implement a plugin which, if enabled by the user, to read content on my website. Presumably my best option is a website plugin, however there might be some programming I've not come across which allows the likes of PHP to read content. I'm not entirely sure how this all works.   • Sortable Accordion Modified to Implement More On Click However New Levels Will Not Expand

The reason why I am asking for help now is that I don't have a clue why my newly added accordion(s) do not expand upon being clicked. I've got a feeling it may be due to the newly added code as I was having problems using my code in the file so instead I looked at the source and copied the accordion level to be used and all appears to look fine apart from them not expanding.   • On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

    Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website! Does anyone know my best solution to progress to having this feature on my website, any tutorials or free to use, free to modify web plugins? Thank you for your help, Best Regards, Tim

  • Missing resolutions on ubuntu 11.10 fresh install

    Today I installed Ubuntu 11.10 for the first time on my computer. My Monitor's resolution is 1280x1024, but the only resolutions in display are "1024x768 (4:3)" and "800x600 (4:3)". I installed all updates, There is nothing in additional drivers and still nothing. I want to set the resolution to 1280x1024. How do I check my graphic card name? By the way Unity 3d is working and compiz effects are working super fast.

This actions drop down I would like to have an action to 'Enable Editing'. Upon clicking to enable editing, I would like a PHP variable modified from 'EnableEditing = false' to 'EnableEditing = true'. Why I would like to use PHP maybe questionable, here is why I would like to use PHP under my understanding to clarify; Sections on my page will show to different administrators depending on their level. Upon enabling editing mode, certain contents will then dynamically. <?php if ($_SESSION['user_level_status'] < 2) { if ($editing = enabled) { show this } else { show this } } ?> Something similar to this, I'm new at PHP so this may look incorrect.   • EF 4 - associations with keys that dont match

    We're using POCOs and have 2 entities: Item and ItemContact. There are 1 or more contacts per item. Item has as a primary key: ItemID LanguageCode ItemContact has: ItemID ContactID We cant add an association with a referrential constraint as they have differing keys. There isnt a strict primary / foreign key as languageCode isnt in ItemContact and ContactID isnt in Item. How can we go about mapping this with an association for contacts for an item if there isnt a direct link but I still want to see the contacts for an item? One of the entities originates in a database view so it is not possible to add foreign keys to the database Thanks Stephen Ward

  • Updating Ubuntu server from 8.10 to 10.04

    I have a VPS that has Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition installed on it and I would like to upgrade it to 10.04. What would be the correct way of doing this? I only have ssh access to it and a "Start/Shutdown VPS" in the client panel of the vendor. In other words, I do not have physical access to it. Also worth noting is that I apparently cannot install programs any more since the sources (osuosl.org ?) are not online.   • Package linux-headers-3.7.0-999 is not installed

    When trying to install the three amd64 debs for the 3.7.0 kernel from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2012-10-22-quantal/ I get this error: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic: linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic depends on linux-headers-3.7.0-999; however: Package linux-headers-3.7.0-999 is not installed. It installs and works correctly but leaves me with broken packages in Synaptic. Is this just a bug with how Ubuntu is packaging these latest debs? Or am I doing something wrong?

  • Disable usage of console-kit-daemon in Ubuntu

    Hello, I administrate several Ubuntu 9.04 servers, and everytime I log in, I get the Landscape utility printout with server stats, etc. I really don't need this and it slows down my logins considerably. Can somebody please tell me how to disable message of the day as well as the landscape-sysin daemon ? I started tracking my logins using top, and when a user logs in, sshd shoots right up to 100% CPU usage, and I believe that landscape and the message of the day update daemon are the primary culprits. Does anybody else have any ideas as to what could be causing my horrible login times ?

  • Install Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790

    Does anybody have experience installing Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790? When I connect to the machine with the Hyper-V Manager Administrator snap-in, and try to create and run a virtual machine, I get the error "The Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running". I've disabled the Execute Disable functionality in the BIOS as was requried for other Dell models, but no matter what combination of security and virtualization settings I use on the machine, I can't get this working. EDIT: I've installed Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790, and I'm trying to install and setup a guest VM on the Hypervisor EDIT 2: The Hyper-V role is installed and configured, without any errors in the event log. Hardware-assisted virtualization is also enabled.

  • Web browsing over SSH

    Hello, I have something of a difficult situation : our company has a webserver in a remote data center that's, at the moment, only accessible by SSH and the firewall is not easily modifiable because the techs at the data center are unreliable and unreachable lately (not my choice of data center, and switching is not an option at the moment). Are there any browsers or plugins out there that will let me browse over an SSH connection ? I can browse with links and lynx on the SSH command line, but that doesn't give me access to various functionality I need, and it's too hard to find things in the web application running on a Tomcat server on the box that I need access to. Does anybody have any suggestions ? We're already working on getting direct access to the web application by having the firewall opened up, but I need something better in the mean time.

  • Outlook 2010 keeps asking me to Choose Profile

    This question has been asked and the answer given seemed to work for others who asked it, but it doesn't work for me. Here's what happened: the other day my power blinked twice within seconds and it caused my computer to reboot. Ever since then, I get a prompt from Outlook 2010 asking me to choose a profile, either when I load the program or when the program is not even running. The only option is "Outlook", and even when I check "set as default" it keeps asking me. I went to Windows (Vista) Control Panel, and searched for "mail" as someone suggested. The only search result that seemed relevant was "Change default programs that Windows uses". From there, I choose Custom/Choose a default email program/Outlook. There is nothing regarding "profiles" as the forum answer suggests, and it doesn't solve the problem. Also, I did all of this while Outlook was not running. Can someone help?

  • What's the best practice to do SOA exception handling?

    Here's some interesting debate going on between me and my colleague when coming to handle SOA exceptions: On one side, I support what Juval Lowy said in Programming WCF Services 3rd Edition: As stated at the beginning of this chapter, it is a common illusion that clients care about errors or have anything meaningful to do when they occur. Any attempt to bake such capabilities into the client creates an inordinate degree of coupling between the client and the object, raising serious design questions. How could the client possibly know more about the error than the service, unless it is tightly coupled to it? What if the error originated several layers below the service—should the client be coupled to those lowlevel layers? Should the client try the call again? How often and how frequently? Should the client inform the user of the error? Is there a user? By having all service exceptions be indistinguishable from one another, WCF decouples the client from the service. The less the client knows about what happened on the service side, the more decoupled the interaction will be. On the other side, here's what my colleague suggest: I believe it’s simply incorrect, as it does not align with best practices in building a service oriented architecture and it ignores the general idea that there are problems that users are able to recover from, such as not keying a value correctly. If we considered only systems exceptions, perhaps this idea holds, but systems exceptions are only part of the exception domain. User recoverable exceptions are the other part of the domain and are likely to happen on a regular basis. I believe the correct way to build a service oriented architecture is to map user recoverable situations to checked exceptions, then to marshall each checked exception back to the client as a unique exception that client application programmers are able to handle appropriately. Marshall all runtime exceptions back to the client as a system exception, along with the stack trace so that it is easy to troubleshoot the root cause. I'd like to know what you think about this?   • Dvorak hotkey remapping in vim, worth it?

    I've been trying to learn the dvorak keyboard layout of late and I have been making some good progress this time around. The trouble I am finding now is that all of my hotkeys are all in the wrong places. As a vim user this is particularly troubling. I have found good resources to switch the bindings back so that they are in the places in vim, but I wonder if this is worth it. I also use set -o vi in my ~/.zshrc file so that I can use the familiar bindings in the terminal as well. hjkl navigation is also featured in a number of other applications such as less. For those of you out there who have successfully made the switch, is it worth remapping things to be familiar again, or is it better in the long run to just deal with weirdly placed hotkeys?
