• How can I create a zip archive of a whole directory via terminal without hidden files?

  I have a project with lots of hidden folders / files in it. I want to create a zip-archive of it, but in the archive shouldn't be any hidden folders / files. If files in a hidden folder are not hidden, they should also not be included. I know that I can create a zip archive of a directory like this: zip -r zipfile.zip directory I also know that I can exclude files with the -x option, so I thought this might work: zip -r zipfile.zip directory -x .* It didn't work. All hidden directories were still in the zip-file.

  Recently, I asked how to do this with a .bat file and an answer was provided. for /D %%d in (*.*) do "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z\7za.exe" a -tzip %%d.zip %%d However, this proved useful only for folders that have no spaces in their name. The reason being that batch will do the following: if the folder name is "jef's vacation pics", the variables will be: %%d = jef's %%e = vacation %%f = pics And then it tries to pass only %%d to the 7-zip program, which will not find such a folder and therefor will not create a zip file. I've tried looking up some tutorials, documentation sites and such, but I haven't been able to come up with an answer. There may be an answer, but I want to take this opportunity to try my hand at powershell. I was thinking that a function with 1 argument, that being the parent-folder of the sub-folders that need to be zipped, would be the best approach. So here's what I have, which doesn't work, probably due to my general in-experience with powershell: function zipFolders($parent) { $zip = "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z\7za.exe"; $parents | ForEach-Object $zip a -tzip }

• Windows vista shows ISO file as ZIP!

  When I download the ISO file my system shows the file as a zip file and not an ISO. I have tried to burn the file as an image to a DVD but my laptop will not bootup from the CD. Settting in the BIOS are ok so I guess the problem is with the ISO file or the way i burned the CD. I have follwed the instructions on the site for downloading and burning an ISO image to CD so I guess that my problem is with the file association in windows Vista. Any ideas and suggestrions welcome Thanks

  How can I automatically zip a group of files into multiple zip files (say, 2mb in size for each file), and that each zip file is a stand-alone zip file? (i.e. not mult-volume zip files, that you can't lost any one of the files, otherwise you can't unzip) Is there any tools available to do so? Actually I just need to group the files into many groups, 2mb each etc, zipped or not zipped doesn't matter thx!

  I'm extracting a zip (self-extracting, but that probably doesn't matter) and for a few files I'm getting a dialog asking me if I want to replace a file that was already extracted with a file that's just about to be extracted. At first glance I didn't understand how a zip could contain the same file in the same place more than once.   Hello, On a Windows box, I need to extract a RAR archive so that individual files in it go into specific directories. I can provide, say, a text file that lists each file and the target directory for it. Then I need help creating a batch file that will actually extract these files into their target locations. • Using chilkat to extract RAR files with progress bar?

  Hello. Does anyone know how to show the progress of archives extracting, when using chilkat? I already have a progress bar called "progressBar1" on my form. At the moment the whole program freezes when extraction is started. Maybe have another thread? On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. • Avoid unwanted path in Zip file

  I'm making a shell script to package some files. I'm zipping a directory like this: zip -r /Users/me/development/something/out.zip /Users/me/development/something/folder/ The problem is that the resultant out.zip archive has the entire file path in it. That is, when unzipped, it will have the whole "/Users/me/development/anotherthing/" path in it. Is it possible to avoid these deep paths when putting a directory into an archive? When I run zip from inside the target directory, I don't have this problem. zip -r out.zip ./folder/ In this case, I don't get all the junk. However, the script in question will be called from wherever. FWIW, I'm using bash on Mac OS X 10.6.

• Mass remove passwords from rar archives

  Is there a way to (I'm using WinRAR; demo, but I'm willing to change it to whatever is needed) mass remove passwords from a bunch of files ? Problem description: for reasons unknown to me, some archiving was done for two-and-something years in RAR format, and all archives have passwords. I have a list of them, them all being similar (mostly something like John-03, John-04, John-05 ... e.g. name-month ...) but I need to manipulate the files at large, and it is a real problem removing and or dearchiving all those files, while entering passwords manually. What would be my best options concerning ? Ideally, I'm looking for some kind of archiver which tries out a predefined list of passwords, and asks only if non of them cracks the safe. Afaik, WinRAR has no such feature.

I have a lot more than 3 folders, so I was thinking of making a batch file or something. What would be the commands to do this? Thanks

• How to make 7-Zip faster

  I normally use WinRAR over 7-Zip simply because it's faster and only a little less efficient with compression. I did a few tests on different filetypes and sizes comparing the 7-Zip and WinRAR default settings on their normal compression and their best compression, and in a lot of cases WinRAR was 50% faster and in some it was actually 100% faster. But, I do like FOSS more. So here are my questions: Is there a way to make 7-Zip speed up? I'd like it to at least be on par with WinRAR's speed Is there a way to make recovery segments in 7-Zip like you can in WinRAR? I didn't see any, but I guess it could be a command line thing. I tested WinRAR and 7-Zip using the latest stable version of each (4-dot-something with 7-Zip). Is the 9.x beta release noticeably faster at compression? I'm talking about faster at a comparable setting in WinRAR, not just lowering to bare minimum compression. If it matters, I use a quad core Intel i7 720 (1.6 GHz)/(2.8 GHz) with 4 GB DDR3 RAM, and the 64-bit version of 7-Zip, and dual-boot Debian x64 5.0.4 and Windows 7 Home.

  I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z? I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. • Create a zip file that doesn't create a folder when opened, Mac OS X

  I am wondering if there is any way of easily creating a zip file that contains a bunch of files. However, when I double-click to open this zip file, I do not want it to create a subdirectory with the same name as the zip file, I just want all of the files to be extracted into the directory where the zip files is stored. Is there a certain flag I can add in terminal to do this, or any program that does this. Thanks for your help!

  I have two zip archives. Say, set1 has 10 csv files created using Mac OS X 10.5.8 compress option, and set2 has 4 csv files similarly created. I want to take the 4 files from zipped archive set2 and add them to list of files in archive set1. Is there a way I can do that? I tried the following in Terminal: zip set1.zip set2.zip This adds the whole archive set2.zip to set1.zip, i.e., in set1.zip now I have: file1.csv, file2.csv,..., file10.csv, set2.zip What I instead want is: file1.csv, file2.csv,..., file10.csv, file11.csv, ..., file14.csv where, set2.zip is the archive containing file11.csv, ..., file14.csv. • problem in opening a link to .rar file

  Hi all, In my jsp, I have a hyperlink linking to a .rar file in the system. Somehow when I clicked on the link, it does not ask users to 'save file' or 'open file' nor using 7zip to open the .rar file. Instead, it just displays some junk characters on the web page. I thought it might be the problem with mime-mapping. So I put an mime-mapping to web.xml with mime-type=application/x-rar-compressed. But it still doesn't work. Do you have any idea what the problem is and how to solve it? Thanks a lot in advance. Other file types have no problem. Kenneth

• PHP Zip Archive sporadically creating multiple files

  I have a PHP script (running PHP 5.2 on Apache 2.2) that creates a zip archive of files for a user to download. Everything seems to work just fine; the only issue I have is that periodically multiple files will be created before the ZIP archive is successfully finished. Example: archive-name.zip archive-name.zip.a09600 archive-name.zip.b09600 archive-name.zip.c09600 This does not happen every single time; only periodically - the file is still created but sometimes these extra 'files' are left on the server after it finishes. • Rar.exe CLI - add files from directory without directory structure?

  I need to grab every file in a folder and shove it into a RAR archive. This is my current method: "C:\Program Files\WinRAR\Rar.exe" a -r -md2m -s -m5 -ma4 -t ..\Releases\vCommands.rar bin\ ... Where bin is my folder. I tried this too, even though it is for another program, and the results are the same. To be clear, here's a picture: To the top-left, in the .rar file, there is the bin directory which contains all the files. To the bottom-right, in the .7z file, all those files are in the archive root. What I need is shoving all those files in the .rar archive root, instead of a folder, without having to execute my batch file inside that bin folder.
