  • logrotate deletes all maillogs older than one day

    - by shadyabhi
    I see only two files maillog and maillog.1 in /var/log. grepping for maillog in logrotate.d directory gives three files that have a mention of maillog. syslog /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/maillog /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron { #/var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron { daily sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } syslog-ng /var/log/messages /var/log/secure /var/log/maillog /var/log/spooler /var/log/boot.log /var/log/cron /var/log/kern.log /var/log/kern { sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } and maillog. /var/log/maillog { daily compress # rotate 365 rotate 14 sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/syslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/rsyslogd.pid 2> /dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } I am new to logrotate so may be I am missing something obvious. What can be the issue? The setup was already done when I started managing the server so I don't also know as do why do I have 3 mentions for maillog in logrotate.

  • Sending UDP/514 data magically appears in syslog without rsyslog running

    - by ale
I’m using a programming language without a library to log to rsyslog over UDP. I thought I was going to need to write a library but I discovered something weird. If I send data on UDP/514 with the port open on the server then the data appears in the server’s syslog. rsyslogd isn’t running so syslog isn’t doing this. Data doesn’t get formatted into a syslog message so rsyslogd really isn’t doing this (only raw text enters syslog). Linux must see the data coming in on this port and know that it should go into /var/log/messages? If I do the same on another port (e.g. UDP/515) then nothing appears in the log! What is doing this? Some CentOS feature? The kernel?

  • rsyslog appears to act on old configuration

    - by Jeff Lee
I'm using a template to dynamically generate rsyslog filenames. I've made some changes from my original format, but rsyslog still appears to be using both the new template and the old after restarting. My filename template went from this: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" To this: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%fromhost-ip%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" I stopped rsyslogd using service rsyslog stop, deleted all of my log files using rm -rf /var/log/remote/*, and then restarted rsyslogd with service rsyslog start. The problem is rsyslog seems to be building folder structures of the type "/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" (i.e., without the remote IP), which no longer appears anywhere in my configuration. Is it possible that old log or config data have been cached somewhere and are being preserved through the server restart? This is creeping me out a little.

  • syslog ip ranges to specific files using `rsyslog`

    - by Mike Pennington
I have many Cisco / JunOS routers and switches that send logs to my Debian server, which uses rsyslogd. How can I configure rsyslogd to send these router / switch logs to a specific file, based on their source IP address? I do not want to pollute general system logs with these entries. For instance: all routers in Chicago (source ip block: 172.17.25.0/24) to only log to /var/log/net/chicago. all routers in Dallas (source ip block 172.17.27.0/24) to only log to /var/log/net/dallas. Finally, these logs should be rotated daily for up to 30 days and compressed. NOTE: I am answering my own question

  • Can a named (bind) crash make a server unreachable?

    - by giorgio79
My server recently became unreachable, and after restart a named error was the last line I found in /var/log/messages before restart: Jun 26 00:15:06 host named[1303]: error (network unreachable) resolving 'dlv.isc.org/DNSKEY/IN': 2001:500:71::29#53 Jun 26 06:38:55 host kernel: imklog 5.8.10, log source = /proc/kmsg started. I doubt it, as I assume I should still be able to login with ssh via IP, but the server did not respond...So, I am trying to make heavy guesses here.

  • Using rsyslog to create different log files for different processes

    - by user80203
Scenario: I am running a cluster of machines. Each machine runs various python programs with a unique (across the cluster), but dynamically set, ID. Right now, they are all logging locally. So, I might have logs that look like: process_5.log process_6.log for processes that had ID's 5 and 6. Another machine may have: process_20.log process_25.log I wish to forward these logs to a logserver running rsyslogd. Python's logging facility has a nice syslog handler, so I understand how I could connect to the remote server. What I haven't figured out is how to use templating/DynFile to maintain log separation. e.g. on the logserver, I will want to see: process_5.log process_6.log process_20.log process_25.log which correspond to the logs of the same name on the sending machine. Is there a way to pull this off with rsyslogd templating?

I am running httperf client on my m/c and after few seconds it is getting killed. dmesg shows: The command is: httperf --hog --client=0/1 --server=39.0.0.2 --port=80 --uri=/50kb --rate=20000 --send-buffer=4096 --recv-buffer=16384 --num-conns=6000000 --num-calls=1 Although I had done this test no. of times but never faced this error any time. • Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?

    - by Pedram
Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot? Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent. After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior. Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way? • Lost all privileges since upgrading to 13.10

    - by Chris Poole
Since upgrading to 13.10, I no longer have the 'privileges' to do the following things: Mount USB/CDROM drives Run software centre or software updater Press the GUI shut down or restart buttons Unlock my account in the 'settings - user accounts' section (padlock is greyed out) Also, when logging on as a guest user I get error messages relating to Compiz crashing with SIGSEGV and it hangs on a blank wallpaper screen. • Server stops responding, can't find issue?

    - by Corey W
I've had a pretty basic server up and running CentOS with webserver/database, and have noticed that it has locked up a few times in the middle of the night. It seems to happen randomly. When it locks up I can ssh in, (although it seems to hang once connected), but can't access cpanel/whm and have to reboot the server to get everything back up. Checking the messages log I see the below like clockwork every 5minutes 1 second, and then it just stops logging anything until I reboot. I can't seem to find any log showing any issue? Is there somewhere I can check to try to figure out what is happening? Could this be caused by CPU being maxed? • Secure ldap problem

    - by neverland
I have tried to config my openldap to have secure connection by using openssl on Debian5. By the way, I got trouble during the below command. ldap:/etc/ldap# slapd -h 'ldap:// ldaps://' -d1 >>> slap_listener(ldaps://) connection_get(15): got connid=7 connection_read(15): checking for input on id=7 connection_get(15): got connid=7 connection_read(15): checking for input on id=7 connection_get(15): got connid=7 connection_read(15): checking for input on id=7 connection_get(15): got connid=7 connection_read(15): checking for input on id=7 connection_read(15): unable to get TLS client DN, error=49 id=7 connection_get(15): got connid=7 connection_read(15): checking for input on id=7 ber_get_next ber_get_next on fd 15 failed errno=0 (Success) connection_closing: readying conn=7 sd=15 for close connection_close: conn=7 sd=15 Then I have search for "unable to get TLS client DN, error=49 id=7" but it seems no where has a good solution to this yet. • Ubuntu server has slow performance

    - by Rich
I have a custom built Ubuntu 11.04 server with a 6 disk software RAID 10 primary drive. On it I'm primarily running a PostgreSQL and a few other utilities that stream data from the web. I often find after a few hours of uptime the server starts to lag with all kinds of processes. For example, it may take 10-15 seconds after log-in to get a shell prompt. It might take 5-10 seconds for top to come up. An ls might take a second or two. When I look at top there is almost no CPU usage. There's a fair amount of memory used by the PostgreSQL server but not enough to bleed into swap. I have no idea where to go from here, other than to suspect the RAID10 (I've only ever had software RAID 1's before). • Secure ldap problem

    - by neverland
Hi there, I have tried to config my openldap to have secure connection by using openssl on Debian5. Please help. Thanks # Well, I try to fix something to get it work but now I got this ldap:~# slapd -d 256 -f /etc/openldap/slapd.conf @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.11 (Nov 26 2009 09:17:06) $ root@SD6-Casa:/tmp/buildd/openldap-2.4.11/debian/build/servers/slapd could not stat config file "/etc/openldap/slapd.conf": No such file or directory (2) slapd stopped. connections_destroy: nothing to destroy. What should I do now? log : ldap:~# /etc/init.d/slapd start Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed. The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or try running the daemon in Debug mode like via "slapd -d 16383" (warning: this will create copious output). • Server freezes at XX:25

    - by Karevan
We've ordered a 50 euro/month server on hetzner.de, it has debian OS. The problem is that server is freezing in random time of the day and nothing appears in log. Only hardware reboot helps. Part of the log file while it was freezing: Aug 17 22:38:26 Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal pure-ftpd: ([email protected]) [INFO] New connection from 95.211.120.220 Aug 17 22:38:26 Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal pure-ftpd: ([email protected]) [INFO] Logout. No. theres no way to look in server's console right after when it freezes, sadly. Datacenter supporters do not really want to help about that. Server has been installed 30th july, times and dates of freezes are down there: 6 august, 0:25 18 august, 2:27 21 august, 1:25 26 august, 23:26. We decided that freezing around ??:25 isn't a hardware fault, and decided to reinstall the OS. Later, 31 august, our admin backed up all files, reinstalled Debian, and restored the backup. But then, 7 september, server went down again, at 5:05. We thought it was related to Anyone else experiencing high rates of Linux server crashes during a leap second day? and turned ntp off. But then the server went down twice again, 21 september, 17:29 and 24 september, 20:27. I called all linux admins I knew to help with solving it and they said everything is fine about configuring OS and it could be hardware only. But they dont know why it always freezes at XX:25-30. Maybe some of you know about something related to that?

  • GUI is not displayed anymore

    - by mdobrinin
I am running 12.04 LTS on a VM. I encountered a problem with the screen being black and the familiar orange background showing for a fraction of a second when clicking or resizing the screen. I had to shutdown the machine and now I have no GUI. I only get a black command-line interface. As some other posts suggest, I attempted: sudo service lightdm restart This doesn't work for me because it gets stuck at this point: Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.bin.firefox Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: user.sbin.rsyslogd * Starting AppArmor profiles [ OK ] Any ideas?

  • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

    - by pr1001
I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Rsyslog : copy with change the facility

    - by Dom
I have saslauthd with save the logs in LOG_AUTH in our rsyslogd server. It can't be changed without recompiling, and I don't want to do that. I would like to see all the LOG_AUTH in LOG_MAIL, because I do an export to an external machine, and I would like to see all the saslauthd logs in LOG_MAIL in the distant server. Of course, in local I can add "auth.* " in the mail.log file section, but the export will not be in the right file because I filter in export by syslog Facility/Priority. How can I export all the AUTH logs into MAIL logs ? Thanks

  • A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

    - by user183394
I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 from past 12 days. • glibc backtrace - can't redirect output to file

    - by Jason Antman
Hi, I'm in the process of debugging a C program (that I didn't write). I have all of the internal debugging tools (a whole bunch of printf's) enabled, and I wrote a small PHP script that uses proc_open() and just grabs both stdout and stderr, and time-coordinates them in one file. At the moment, the binary is dieing with a realloc() error that's caught by glibc, and a glibc backtrace is printed, beginning with: *** glibc detected *** /sbin/rsyslogd: realloc(): invalid next size: 0x00002ace626ac910 *** Here's the thing I don't understand: I've confirmed that the PHP script is catching both stdout and stderr from the binary's process and writing them to the correct files, but this backtrace is still printed to the console. Where is this coming from? Is there some magical output channel other than stdout and stderr? Any ideas on how I go about capturing this backtrace to a file, or sending it out with stderr? Thanks, Jason

  • Why does the login screen fail to appear?

    - by a different ben
My system: Dell Precision T3500 nVidia Quadro NVS 295 Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (3.2.0-32) Essential problem: On boot my system won't get past the splash screen. I can switch to another virtual terminal and log in, I can also ssh from another system -- so it appears that the problem might be with the display manager. How can I diagnose and fix this problem? More info: From a VT I can issue sudo lightdm restart, and this will bring up the login screen and and I can continue from there. So I do have access to my system. Update-manager recently updated a number of packages, including a bunch of x11 and xorg packages, some nVidia drivers, rpcbind, etc etc. My boot log (if that is any guidance) says the following: fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 rpcbind: Cannot open '/run/rpcbind/rpcbind.xdr' file for reading, errno 2 (No such file or directory) rpcbind: Cannot open '/run/rpcbind/portmap.xdr' file for reading, errno 2 (No such file or directory) /dev/sda1: clean, 597650/1525920 files, 3963433/6103296 blocks /dev/sda7: clean, 11/6406144 files, 450097/25608703 blocks /dev/sda5: clean, 158323/1525920 files, 1886918/6103296 blocks /dev/sda8: clean, 250089/107929600 files, 111088810/431689728 blocks Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.sbin.rsyslogd * Starting AppArmor profiles [80G [74G[ OK ] Loading the saved-state of the serial devices... /dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A * Starting ClamAV virus database updater freshclam [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting Name Service Cache Daemon nscd [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting modem connection manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting K Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting mDNS/DNS-SD daemon[74G[ OK ] * Stopping GNOME Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Stopping K Display Manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting bluetooth daemon[74G[ OK ] * Starting network connection manager[74G[ OK ] * Starting Postfix Mail Transport Agent postfix [80G [74G[ OK ] speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher * Starting VirtualBox kernel modules [80G [74G[ OK ] * Starting the Winbind daemon winbind [80G [74G[ OK ] saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron[74G[ OK ] * Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron[74G[ OK ] * Checking battery state...
