  • Programming Languages

    - by Shannon
I realize this will be a very vague question, but please bear with me. I have a concept for an open-world game, hand to hand combat, with a fairly open storyline, but there is an issue. I'm not sure which programming language to use, as I'm fairly new to programming. I am considering c++, but I would like to hear your opinions on which language you believe would support this type of game most efficiently. Pros and cons would be appreciated.

  • Using Single Image for Map in 2D Platformer

    - by Jon
I'm fairly new to game development, and have been messing around with Slick2D. Currently, my map consists of objects that are represented as rectangles. If I wanted to use am image simlar to: How would I be able to use this image to make a level? That question is a bit vague, but like I said, I'm new to game development and am not familiar with terminology or procedures. But going along with this question, how would I also use non-rectangular objects/platforms? Thanks

  • What's the best explanation of what Story Points are?

    - by Cixate
We're starting to use Story Points here for our Agile development but I find it hard to explain and also can't find any definitive answer to what they are. The best thing I can do is point to other sites (like http://blog.mountaingoatsoftware.com/tag/story-points) and give some vague generalization of what they are. I'm looking for a good explanation with some examples of use that would be helpful for others to use. Are there any good resources for explaining story points?

  • Compared to Firefox 4 and Google Chrome 10, what can't IE9 do?

    - by ClosureCowboy
If a website works in Firefox 4 and in Google Chrome 10, what could potentially cause that website not to work (broken layout or broken JavaScript) in IE9? What limitations and differences does IE9 have, aside from vendor-specific stylesheet rules? Yes, that is a painfully vague question — that's because I am not asking this question from the perspective of someone with a specific problem! I'm asking this question from the perspective of someone with a working website who does not have access to IE9.

  • Setting up a Pagefile and Partition in Server 2008

    - by Brett Powell
I am setting up 18 new machines for our company, and I have instructions from my new boss on setting up a Pagefile and Partition. I have looked at their existing machines to base the new setups off of, but there is no consistency between any 2 machines, which has left me extremely frustrated to say the least. My instructions are... 1) Set a static pagefile (use recommended value as max/min), set it on SSD if SSD available. 2) Make 3 partitions: C: is used for OS and install files D: is used for backups on machines with a SSD. On machines without SSD create a D: partition for pagefile (2*installed RAM for partition size) E: must be the partition hosting user files I have never messed with Pagefiles before, and looking at their existing machines is offering no help. My questions are... 1) As the machines I am setting up have no SSD (just 2 SATA drives) does it sound like the Pagefile should be setup on the C: (primary) drive or the D:? The instructions are vague so I have no idea. 2) As C: and D: are both Physical drives, does it sound like C: should be partitioned out to create the E: drive or D:? Thanks for any help I can get. I am extremely stressed out under a massive workload right now, and these vague instructions are quite infuriating.

  • SQLAuthority News – The Best Quotes of “Who Wrote This?” Contest

    - by pinaldave
I am a frequent reader of Brent Ozar PLF, it is one of my favorite blogs. A recent post announced a “Who Wrote This?” contest to see if readers could tell their three contributors apart based on some writing samples. Here are my favorite lines from the sample paragraphs, from each of the three “mystery authors.” Topic 1: Working with Bad Managers Mystery Author A – “Working with bad managers means working against my own happiness, and I’ve come to learn that there’s no changing bad managers.” I love this line because, as anyone who has had a bad manager knows, often a lot of self-doubt rises up. We all have to remember that sometimes the problem is out of our control. Mystery Author B – “Mentor your manager just like you would mentor a junior DBA.” Having a bad manager can be extremely depressing, and we often feel out of control. But we all need to remember that our work is a two-way street, and that sometimes we can subtly influence those above us. Mystery Author C – “The trick to working for all bad managers is to remember that they aren’t your parent. Take charge of your career.” We all also need to learn not to play the blame game. Would you rather stay in a place where you are unhappy, or would you rather take charge of your life? I hope most people would pick the latter. Topic 2: Working with Remote Teams Mystery Author A – “Like almost anything else the key is to make sure that everyone on the team has an understanding of how and when communication will occur.” Communication is so important. I cannot over emphasize how much. And this one line captures how I feel and even communicates the idea clearly! Mystery Author B – “The key to remote team success is verifiable trust: feeling confident that invisible team members are doing the right amount of the right thing at the right time.” I think this line not only captures the key aspects of remote work – verifiable work and trust – but there were so many lines that followed that I loved and could not fit here. The whole paragraph is a list for successful remote work. Everyone could benefit from reading it. Mystery Author C – “What seems clear, precise, and specific in one time zone comes across as vague, soupy, and just plain weird in another.” You know what? I just love this description. The author is right – sometimes vague e-mails really do seem soupy and weird! Topic 3: Working with Your Nemesis Mystery Author A – “Every job is temporary, but your reputation stays with you.” Everyone needs to remember this. The workplace is meant to be a professional arena, and many people have the opinion that work is temporary and disposable. No one wants to work with co-worker like that. Mystery Author B – “Unhealthy conflict is going to lead to leaving three week old tuna fish sandwiches in someone’s desk drawer.” Sometimes humor really is the best policy! Mystery Author C – “Oh no, it’s that guy.” This might seem like a weird phrase to choose as my favorite from an entire paragraph. But the whole piece was written in the form of a story of co-workers getting drunk and plotting against a nemesis. It was too funny to overlook, but too long to post here. A must read! • Detecting what the target object is when NullReferenceException is thrown.

    - by StingyJack
I'm sure we all have received the wonderfully vague "Object reference not set to instance of an Object" exception at some time or another. Identifying the object that is the problem is often a tedious task of setting breakpoints and inspecting all members in each statement. Does anyone have any tricks to easily and efficiently identify the object that causes the exception, either via programmatical means or otherwise? --edit It seems I was vague like the exception =). The point is to _not have to debug the app to find the errant object. The compiler/runtime does know that the object has been allocated, and that the object has not yet been instantiated. Is there a way to extract / identify those details in a caught exception @ W. Craig Trader Your explanation that it is a result of a design problem is probably the best answer I could get. I am fairly compulsive with defensive coding and have managed to get rid of most of these errors after fixing my habits over time. The remaining ones just tweak me to no end, and lead me to posting this question to the community. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

  • Is ext4 ready for a production usage ?

    - by Konstantin
Hi What do you think about ext4 filesystem in the production enviroment ? We are very close to launching our project that will use tens of millions quite often updated not very big files and we need to decide which FS to use. For a while our considerations about other linux FS are: Ext3 is rock stable, but not very well suited for handling millions small files XFS looks very nice, probably we'll use it ReiserFS ... well...vague future, who will end up fixing bugs ?

  • Can I downgrade from the Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8 if I have an OEM CD?

    - by tesselode
The internet is full of vague information about how you can downgrade the Windows 8.1 preview to Windows 8, and I kind of want to try it, but only if it's not going to be too inconvenient to uninstall if I need to. Here is my exact situation: I installed Windows 8 using an OEM CD. If I install the Windows 8.1 preview, can I use the factory restore feature to downgrade back to Windows 8? Does this change based on whether I installed using the Windows Store or the .iso?

  • Matching digits in Notepad++ extended search mode

    - by ketchup
Notepad++'s manual is rather vague on the special character for numerical used in extended search mode. It says: \d### - Decimal value (between 000 and 255) but literally entering "\d###" doesn't match anything. What I am trying to do is to replace if VarA == 12 VarB = 1 with if VarA == 12 Var12=1 VarB=1

  • Where may I get the EDX platform, the LMS open source project? [closed]

    - by Ramón Girona
Possible Duplicate: Where can I download edx opensource learning platform? What other learning platforms are opensource? I have just found a query on the edx platform in which I am interested, being a significant piece of Learning Management System open source. I assume superuser platform cares about computer software, and therefore I don't see the question irrelevant. Besides I would like to know why a question is closed with a vague argument as "doesn't fit with the FAQ". Thanks very much, Ramón Girona

  • Chromium OS Build: How can I use a prebuilt chromium in my OS build?

I'm attempting to build chromium-os from source and am having some issues integrating the browser into the build. I have a zip of a prebuilt version but I have not been able to find documentation on what to do with it. I've been following the guide that google provides and have just setup the board, but now I am stuck, the directions for building/including chromium in the OS are far to vague. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Can Airport Extremes handle NTFS external drives?

    - by Electrons_Ahoy
I've got an Airport Extreme and an external USB Hard Drive formatted with NTFS. (And a LAN of Windows XP Machines.) The drive works perfectly when connected directly to a PC. When it's connected to the AE, however, the Airport Utility sees the drive and lists it in the Disks list, but the drive doesn't appear on the network (as near as I can tell.) Can the AE handle NTFS formatted disks? The documentation is vague on that point.

  • Tool to Set a Hotkey to Adjust Overlay Surface Gamma

    - by Synetech inc.
I am looking for a (Windows XP) utility (preferably a standalone app) that can let me set a hotkey to adjust the gamma (and hopefully other color settings) of the overlay surface. ATI Tray Tools does not have the ability to bind the overlay color adjustments to the overlay. I’ve asked him about it and he said it was difficult to implement or something (he was kind of vague). The ATI Catalyst drivers do not have a hotkey function for the overlay tab either. Can anyone help?

  • DVD (vob file) to online video viewer?

    - by Nick
I've been sent a DVD which needs to be put onto a website, but I honestly don't even know where to start. Do I simply convert the file using some software to MP4(?!) and then use something like http://videojs.com/ to view it online? I'm really sorry for the vague question, but I want to produce the best quality results, with good compression, good quality and a nice video player interface. Would really appreciate any recommendations. Thank you!

  • What is the CPU microcode?

    - by golem
Today after unpacking the initramfs file from my Linux /boot directory I found that it contains the GenuineIntel.bin file, and that that file is an image of what is called the CPU microcode. Then I found articles on ArchWiki and Wikipedia describing the subject. Now I'm not sure that my vague understanding of the subject is correct. Can anyone please explain what the CPU microcode is in plain English?

  • what are the components you can install on RHEL?

    - by user16654
I just got a question from a customer(actually from a customer to my manager then to me) and he is asking the following question: What are the components that were installed with RHEL? It may sound like a silly question but to me it sounds vague. The main thing I am thinking about now is during install you can select three components: webserver software development and virtualisation. Could they be asking fro something else?
