  Ii looks like this has been asked and answered in all the simple cases, excluding the one that i'm having trouble with. I've tried using a recursive CTE to generate this, however maybe a cursor would be better? or maybe a set of recursive functions will do the trick? Can this be done in a cte? consider the following table PrimaryKey ParentKey 1 NULL 2 1 3 6 4 7 5 2 6 1 7 NULL should yield PK 1 -2 --5 -6 --3 7 -4 where the number of - marks equal the depth, my primary difficulty is the ordering.

• Accented character regex

  I'm trying to create a regex that will look for french words whether a user specifies the accented characters or not. So if the the user has searched for "déclaré" but types in declare instead I would like to be able to match the text still. I'm having difficulty making this more dynamic so that it can be matched on any french word... Closest example from another user from a different post was: d[eèéê]cl[aàáâ]r[eèéê] Is it even possible to write a regex for something like this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

  My client has a running web application which has been online for more than a year. Recently the client has introduced smart cards for his employees. Because of the difficulty in integrating smart card with its api on a web interface(i will post another detailed question on this later) we are planning to have desktop interface for this. There are 10-20 terminals which will use the desktop interface. 3 approaches for doing this that I have considered : Direct connection and operations on DB-Not using this because of data integrity and consistency issues. Build web service end points and use it from desktop interface Build a dll with common functions and use from both web and desktop Questions: 1. What are your opinions based on 2 and 3 approach? 2. • Cascading Dropdown List

  I am working on a web app and trying to code a form with two dropdown lists. The list in the second dropdown will be dependent on the selection from the first one. The task itself isn’t too complicated except that once the first selection is made, I need to make a database call to pull the data for the second dropdown. This is where I am having difficulty. Both lists are in fact populated from a database. I am working on this in a python script and have been trying to do this w/ an onChange javascript function. The web app is built in Zope and page templates may be an option along w/ the python scripts.

• identify documents from results of mahout clustering

  I am using mahout to cluster text documents indexed using solr. I have used the "text" field in the document to form vectors. Then I used the k-means driver in mahout for clustering and then the clusterdumper utility to dump the results. I am having difficulty in understanding the output results from the dumper. I could see the clusters formed with term vectors in those clusters. But how do I extract the documents from these clusters. I want the result to be the input documents appearing in different clusters.

• How do I do a fresh install of Google App Engine?

  I've been using GAE for months now, but very recently I've had difficulty getting the latest release (1.3.4) to work for me. I'd like to remove GAE and start from scratch and reinstall it. However, it appears that deleting the googleappenginelauncher.app is not enough to completely remove it, because when I install the launcher again I see that it remembers the applications it was running previously (so at a minimum, there are some config files out there that I'm not removing properly). I'm new to Macs, so if there are other things I need to do besides deleting the .app, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

• searching within a compressed sorted fixed width file

  Assume I have a regular compressed fixed width file that is sorted on one of the fields. Given that I know the length of the records, I can use lseek to implement a binary search to records with fields that match a given value without having to read the entire file. Now the difficulty is that the file is gzipped. Is it possible to do this without completely inflating the file? If not with gzip. is there any compression that supports this kind of behavior?

• Are self-described / auto-descriptive services loosely or tightly coupled in a SOA architecture ?

  I consider a self-described / auto-descriptive service as a good thing in a SOA architecture, since (almost) everything you know to call the service is present in the service contract (such a WSDL). Sample of a non self-described service for me is Facebook Query Language (FQL http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/FQL), or any web service exchanging XML flow in a one String parameter for then parsing XML and performing treatments. Last ones seem further more technically decoupled, since technically you can switch implementations without technical impact on the caller, handling compatibility between implementations/versions at a business level. On the other side, having no strong interface (diluted into the service and its version), make the service tightly coupled to the existing implementation (more difficulty to interchange the service and to ensure perfect compatibility). • Pattern for iPhone background loading during init?

  Hi everyone, I'm currently kicking off a background thread to do some REST queries in my app delegate's didFinishLaunchingWithOptions. This thread creates some objects and populates the model as the rest of the app continues to load (because I don't block, and didFinishLaunchingWithOptions returns YES). I also put up a loading UIViewController 'on top' of the main view that I tear down after the background initialization is complete. My problem is that I need to notify the first view (call it the Home view) that the model is ready, and that it should populate itself. The trick is that the background download could have finished before Home.viewDidAppear is called, or any of the other Home.initX methods. I'm having difficulty synchronizing all of this and I've thought about it long enough that it feels like I'm barking up the wrong tree. Are there any patterns here for this sort of thing? I'm sure other apps start by performing lengthy operations with loading screens :) Thanks!

  I'm implementing a search service called SearchInsideOut. http://bit.ly/97SFyW This search service simply replaces web page results by full web pages (Yes, I used iframe). The problem I have to deal with is iframe-breaking pages. The promising solution I found is using onbeforeunload to let users decide whether to stay or leave my site. But this also creates another annoying behavior. When users click other links in my site, onbeforeunload will also be triggered. Fortunately, I could solve this case by placing window.onbeforeunload=null in the onclick event of those links of my site. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to detect external events like clicking "refresh/back" buttons. What should I do to solve this difficulty? All suggestions and comments are highly appreciated.

To be more precise of the problem I'm dealing, here is the details: I dynamically load a document (HTML and javascript) using jquery var url = 'document.php'; $('#container').load(url); And then I want to call the functions from that document.php. Due to my requirement, I don't want to call the function after the documents' loaded, but rather to call it later when I need it. Because it was dynamically loaded, the DOM doesn't recognize the functions. How to properly call this function? Thank you

  Hi, My manager in my current company feels that I am selling myself short by getting another job - but as a senior. He feels I have sold myself short and missing out on a good salary by getting another junior job, given how he (my manager) has a lot of faith in my development skills. However, I have not worked long enough for a proper senior job (5 years +) but then the senior developer we do have in my current company isn't given senior tasks (judged by difficulty). This is the pseudo code I am given: int mutex = 0; do { while (TestAndSet(&mutex)); // critical section mutiex = 0; // remainder section } while (TRUE); My instructor says that only two of the three necessary conditions (mutual exclusion, progress, and bounded waiting) are met with this code, but I don't understand which one isn't being met...??   I've a ggplot that shows the counts of tweets for some brands as well as a label for the overall percentage. • Why is Java String indexOf failing?

  Hi all, this must be quite simple but I am having great difficulty. You see I am trying to find a string within another string as follows. e = input.indexOf("-->"); s = input.indexOf("<!--"); input = input.replace(input.substring(s, e + 3), " "); The integers e and s are returning -1 in that it was not found and this is causing the replace method to fail. The test string I am using is "Chartered Certified<!--lol--> Accountants (ACCA)". I tried to creat a new string object and pass in the string as an argument as follows e=input.indexOf(new String("<!--")); This yielded the same result. Any ideas ?

• Rails Application expecting me to restart my webrick server for any change in my controller.

  I am working on an existing Rails 2.3.x application, So I was working on it and it was a messy code with great difficulty I was able to run the application. But now for every small change in one of my controller it is expecting me to restart my serer otherwise the changes are not reflecting back, Let's take an example scenario here, Let's just say in one of the before_filter method I just added a puts statement on top of the method and it was not printing in the log, after I restart the server it is printing, Can some one please let me know if I am missing something here.

• How to protect against GHC7 compiled programs taking all memory?

  When playing with various algorithms in Haskell it often happens to me that I create a program with a memory leak, as it often happens with lazy evaluation. The program taking all the memory isn't really fun, I often have difficulty killing it if I realize it too late. When using GHC6 I simply had export GHCRTS='-M384m' in my .bashrc. But in GHC7 they added a security measure that unless a program is compiled with -rtsopts, it simply fails when it is given any RTS option either on a command line argument or in GHCRTS. Unfortunately, almost no Haskell programs are compiled with this flag, so setting this variable makes everything to fail (as I discovered in After upgrading to GHC7, all programs suddenly fail saying "Most RTS options are disabled. Link with -rtsopts to enable them."). Any ideas how to make any use of GHCRTS with GHC7, or another convenient way how to prevent my programs taking all memory?

  This question is particularly aimed at descriptions and explanations of what is happening in a computer program, as well as any general advice or approaches for undertaking technical reports in Computer Science at both undergraduate and graduate levels. You see, I am having particular difficulty in the best way to explain what is happening. As in, given any given program from a multi-agent system to a standard webservice, the best and most eloquent way to say exactly what is going on, the logic behind it and it's respective justifications. Should I avoid saying class names? Avoid specifying methods? Keep referring to class variables and any particular references? I'm banging my head against the wall at trying to keep a solid technical foundation and making it accessible to people of all backgrounds. Apologies for the rather vague question. Cheers.

• Why does this jQuery dropdown menu display subcategory selections only for certain top-level categories?

  I'm trying to implement a dropdown menu based on a jQuery plugin from Filament Group: http://jsfiddle.net/chunkymonkey/Pr8k4/ What I am having difficulty fixing is a bug where certain categories can be expanded to show their subcategories while others show nothing when opened up. For example: Alternative Rock can be expanded to show its multiple subcategories . . . BUT . . . World Music, which has equally many subcategories, shows no subcategories when expanded. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me figure out what's causing this. Thanks. UPDATE: Just noticed this problem may be Chrome-specific(??). I just tested it in IE8 and Firefox and it seems to work correctly in both.

I know I can do a git log to see the commit history from where I am, but is there a way to see the entire branch topography, something like these ascii maps that seem to be used everywhere for explaining branches? .-A---M---N---O---P / / / / / I B C D E \ / / / / `-------------' It just feels like someone coming along and trying to pick up my repository would have difficulty working out exactly what was going on. • How To: Call a web service from ajax

  I have a simple Web Service that send email and is called via: public bool SendMail(string format, string from, string to, string cc, string bcc, string subject, string body, string replyTo) I have never used ajax before, and find I need to call this service and pass form contents to it from a simple html page (I cannot use asp or asp.net unfortunately). Can I get a quick rundown of what is required? I have searched for simple examples, but find I am having difficulty understanding how to call it and pass the parameters required of the Web Service.
