• Django + Pydev/Eclipse + Google App Engine - possible?

  Has anyone been able to get Google App Engine/Django working in Pydev/Eclipse? I tried this but had difficulty getting Pydev to recognize all of the externally linked folders (django plugins) that I was referencing. I ended up copying all of those folders into the project en masse, rather than referencing them, resulting in a massively bloated project folder - it was really an unworkable solution that eventually made me give up the whole project. So, I'm wondering if anyone has tried this or has any idea what I might have been doing wrong. (Keep in mind this was my first attempt at using Pydev, Django, App Engine and Python!!)

• Surface Detection in 2d Game?

  I'm working on a 2D Platform game, and I was wondering what's the best (performance-wise) way to implement Surface (Collision) Detection. So far I'm thinking of constructing a list of level objects constructed of a list of lines, and I draw tiles along the lines. ( http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/1704/lines.png ). I'm thinking every object holds the ID of the surface that he walks on, in order to easily manipulate his y position while walking up/downhill. Something like this: //Player/MovableObject class MoveLeft() { this.Position.Y = Helper.GetSurfaceById(this.SurfaceId).GetYWhenXIs(this.Position.X) } So the logic I use to detect "droping/walking on surface" is a simple point (player's lower legs)-touches-line (surface) check (with some safety approximation - let`s say 1-2 pixels over the line). Is this approach OK? I`ve been having difficulty trying to find reading material for this problem, so feel free to drop links/advice.

• Django json serialization problem

  I am having difficulty serializing a django object. The problem is that there are foreign keys. I want the serialization to have data from the referenced object, not just the index. For example, I would like the sponsor data field to say "sponsor.last_name, sponsor.first_name" rather than "13". • Log RuntimeException thrown from thread created by Spring via the @Async annotation

  I'm having some difficulty logging RuntimeException from a thread. My system is: Java 7 (b118), Spring 3.0.5. The threads are not created by hand, but via Spring's @Async annotation, which creates it's own executor behind the scenes, so I don't really have the option of overriding any methods of the thread, FutureTask or anything low level. So my question is if Spring has any support or if there are any best practices for handling (logging) these type of exceptions? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

  I'm having some difficulty understanding how to validate a date (DOB) using MVC2. What I want to do is 1. Is the date entered a valid date and, 2. Is the date at lease 13 years in the past.   I'm trying to understand how to have more than one series on a plot, using the following data. Year <- c('1950', '1960', '1970', '1980') Bus <- c(10,20,30,40) Bus.sd <- c(1.1, 2.2, 3.3, 4.4) Car <- c(20, 20, 40, 40) Car.sd <- c(1.1, 2.2, 3.3, 4.4) sample_data = data.frame(Year, Bus, Bus.sd, Car, Car.sd) qplot(Year, Bus, data=sample_data, geom="pointrange", ymin = Bus - Bus.sd/2, ymax = Bus + Bus.sd/2) For example, using the above data, how do I show both sample_data$Bus and sample_data$Car on the same plot in different colors? What I tried doing was: p <- qplot(...) then p <- p + qplot(...) where I replicated the previous line, but this gave me an error. I don't fully understand how AES works. I have studied the ggplot2 examples, but have difficulty understanding the relevant examples here.

• Full-Text Search in SQL Server Express Won't Recognize Latest IFilters

  I'm having difficulty getting full-text search working in SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services. I have a table loaded with .DOCX files as varbinary(MAX) data that I want to use for a full-text catalog, but it doesn't seem to recognize the .DOCX format. Here are the steps that I've taken... Installed the latest Filter Pack 2.0 Exec sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources', 1 Exec sys.sp_help_fulltext_system_components 'all' (NOTE: .DOCX is not shown as a filter) Building the full-text catalog fails to identify any key words I initially thought there might be a conflict between x86 SQL Express and x64 Filter Pack on my Windows 7 machine, but I just tried it with everything x86 in a Windows XP virtual machine and got the same result.

• Get the entire string of a jquery DOM object

  Hi, I have had a bit of a look around and am having some difficulty solving a wee issue I am having. I basically have a string of HTML, I convert that to a JQuery DOM object so that I can easily remove all elements that have a certain class using JQuery's .remove(). I.e., var radHtml = editor.get_html(); var jqDom = $(radHtml); $(".thickbox", jqDom).remove(); editor.set_html(jqDom.html()); The only problem is that .html() only gets the first element, not the entire DOM. In reference to my code I am basically wanting radHhtml - elements with class "thickbox" (returned as string). I was wondering if there was an easy way to do this - have some html and remove all elements (in this case divs) that have a certain class (but leaving their contents). JQuery doesnt have to used, but I would like to. Any help would be much appreicated. Thanks.

  There's a game on my laptop called 'Chess Titans' which I've been playing one game a day for almost 90 days. With the difficulty on the hardest setting I have not been able to win one game, however, I have come close. What's the fun in playing a chess game if the computer can search all moves and win? Has (or can) anyone beat a modern computer chess AI? What games can't a computer gain an advantage in? (i.e. They would be 'fun' to play.)

• Using XTemplate with SimpleStore in Ext

  I am currently adding some functionality to some old code. There used to be a template which took a flat array of items and spat out some HTML, now the data is coming from a simple store which reads some JSON.. var allwords = [ ['abacteriano', 'abacteriano'], ['abacterial', 'abacteriano'], ['abciximab', 'abciximab'], etc.. So my simplestore goes like this: termStore = new Ext.data.SimpleStore({ fields: ['term', 'lookup'], data: allwords }); This definitly works fine as I use the termStore in a combobox. However I am having difficulty getting it to play with an XTemplate. It seems the syntax in extjs doesn't play well with SO, so this bit wont be in a code block... So I guess I'll describe it :p Essentially its a simple template which tries to get values out of the passed collection by doing {term} I then try and apply it by doing: tpl.overwrite(Ext.get("contentbox"), termStore); This gives me a JS error of "invalid object initializer"

• Regex for finding valid sphinx fields

  I'm trying to validate that the fields given to sphinx are valid, but I'm having difficulty. Imagine that valid fields are cat, mouse, dog, puppy. Valid searches would then be: @cat search terms @(cat) search terms @(cat, dog) search term @cat searchterm1 @dog searchterm2 @(cat, dog) searchterm1 @mouse searchterm2 So, I want to use a regular expression to find terms such as cat, dog, mouse in the above examples, and check them against a list of valid terms. Thus, a query such as: @(goat) Would produce an error because goat is not a valid term. I've gotten so that I can find simple queries such as @cat with this regex: (?:@)([^( ]*) But I can't figure out how to find the rest. I'm using python & django, for what that's worth.

  Hey, Not sure if that has been asked before, but semantics causes difficulty in searching. Are there any sites which have a list of items for developers to use in applications? For example, you can download Dictionaries in specific formats (e.g. XML) for use in word games. In particular, I was hoping that there might be a list of common medical drugs so that I can use display a list in an application I'm working on as researching and typing 150+ drug names would be quite inefficient. • Loading dictionary for input method suggestion list

  Hi, For various reasons, i'm trying to write my own input keyboard. So far all is going well except that of creating the suggestions. I've found the latinIME algorithm, which is all good. However i'm having major difficulty working out how to load the dictionary in the first place. I've had a good look round the net, and found various suggestions, but no definitive answers, and i cant seem to get any of them to work. If anyone has any suggestions on how best to do it, or even better some sample code, that would be brilliant. Many Thanks James

• .htaccess newb - RewriteRule not matching 2nd rule, why?

  I am currently migrating from isapi_rewrite to .htaccess. I'm having some difficulty and I think it's something basic, but I'm not terribly familiar with .htaccess. I have the two rules like so: RewriteRule ^testing/ /test/index.html?test=1 [NC] RewriteRule ^testing/foo-bar/ /test/index.html?test=2 [NC] Yet the second rule never matches. If I go to http://mydomain.com/testing/foo-bar/ then I will only see the first rule. Why is that? And can it be easily fixed? I have many rules (outputted from the database to write the .htaccess file )and ordering them in a particular order isn't really possible.

  Hi, I have to develop a code which will store a list of objects, as example below 101, value 11, value 12, value 13 ...etc 102, value 21, value 22, value 23 ...etc 103, value 31, value 32, value 33 ...etc 104, value 41, value 42, value 43 ...etc Now, the difficulty is, that first column is an identifier, and whole table should always be sorted by it. Easy access to each element is required. Additionally, list should be easily updated, and extended by adding element at the end as well as in front and still keep being sorted by first column. Finally, I would like to be able to display values of the above in datagridview. What is most important is a performance of the implementation, as rows will be updated many times per second, and datagridview should be able to display all changes immediately. I was thinking about creating class for the values, and then a Dictionary but encountered a problem with displaying values in gridview. What would be the most optimal way of implementing the code?   Hi I'm having difficulty figuring out how to store an explicitly user generated instance in StructureMap, cached by HttpContext. When I try the code underneath, I even get the first cached instance, which leads to failures when using it for storing user credentials in Asp.Net AuthenticateRequest method. ForRequestedType<TInterface>() .CacheBy(InstanceScope.HttpContext) .TheDefault. Is. Object(instance)); The problem is I can't create a new instance on requesting StructureMap, because I need more other factories for getting rights etc. for the current user. Any ideas?

• Java Program Design Layout Recommendations?

  I've learned enough to begin writing programs from scratch, but I'm running into the problem of not knowing how to design the layout and implementation of a program. To be more precise, I'm having difficulty finding a good way to come up with an action plan before I dive in to the programming part. I really want to know what classes, methods, and objects I would need beforehand instead of just adding them along the way. My intuition is leading me to using some kind of charting software that gives a hierarchal view of all the classes and methods. I've been using OmniGraffle Pro and while it does seem to work somewhat, I'm still having trouble planning out the program in its entirety. How should I approach this problem? What softwares out there are available to help with this problem? Any good reads out there on this issue? Thanks so much! Edit: Oh yeah, I'm using Eclipse and I code mainly in Java right now.

Current and Next in table StatusTransition are FK (StatusType.Id). • Database Design for One to One relationships

  I'm trying to finalize my design of the data model for my project, and am having difficulty figuring out which way to go with it. I have a table of users, and an undetermined number of attributes that apply to that user. The attributes are in almost every case optional, so null values are allowed. Each of these attributes are one to one for the user. Should I put them on the same table, and keep adding columns when attributes are added (making the user table quite wide), or should I put each attribute on a separate table with a foreign key to the user table. I have decided against using the EAV model. Thanks!

• How to use Messageboxes in MVVM?

  It seems that the XAML in MVVM pattern has difficulty to pop-up a Messageboxes. My client insists that the validation labels and colors are not good for them. They still want a messagebox. How can do it? I know I can pop-up messageboxes in the view-model, but it violates the whole purpose for the view-model. I can also raise a error, and pop-up a messagebox in some exception handlers, but the messagebox is not an exception. It is part of the normal program flow. Is there a good way to do it in XAML? My client likes messageboxes. She does not care about the MVVM pattern, she never had any quality problem before using MVVM and unit test. But now, she can not even get her messageboxes, so she is not very happy. Your help is definitely appreciated ... I need to make her happy.

  I have 2 dropdown lists on my webform and using jquery trying to filter/reset filter 2nd dropdown elements based on 1st dropdown selection. $(document).ready(function() { $('#dropdown1').change(function(e) { switch ($(this).val()) { case "4": //this removal works $('#dropdown2').filter(function() { return ($(this).val() == 16); }).remove(); break; ................. default: //how would I restore filter here? } } }); Removing part works, so it filters item with no problem, but I have difficulty restoring the filter on dropdown 2 if something else is chosen in dropdown 1. I was trying to use .hide() and .show() instead of .remove() but it doesn't seem to work on IE6 at least.
