• How can I get my mysqld-swamped CPU under control?

  I was AFK for about 24 hours and came back to find gnome-system-monitor saying all four CPU cores on my laptop were running at full throttle. mysqld is taking up more than one full core; when I tried to end the process, it restarted with a new PID. Then there's ksoftirqd/0-3, which apparently has something to do with interrupts, but I can't tell from Google what I'm supposed to do with those four particular processes. They're taking up a quarter or more of my processor cycles. Then there's Chrome, but I can probably handle that on my own -- how do I cool down the other processes giving me problems?

• How do I get alt-tab to cycle through all open windows on GNOME Classic?

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with "Gnome classic (no effects)" at login. Using alt+tab cycles between windows on current desktop. How can I set it to cycle through ALL open windows? Well, I have done as proposed, here is what happened: when I pressed Alt+Tab, it still showed only window icons from current desktop. Furthermore, I could only switch between the two most recently used windows with a single Tab press. Releasing the Tab and pressing again closed the window chooser. Another try after logout-login gave another result: pressing Alt+Tab just showed the main menu. More ideas are welcome.

• How to remove geoclue-master?

  Looking in System Monitor I saw a process called geoclue-master. As far as I can tell, this reports my precise location to applications and the internet. This computer is sitting in the same office all the time so I have no need whatsoever for such a thing, and would rather have the memory and processor cycles that this unnecessary service uses up - however small - free for things that I do need and want. I could not find instructions for disabling and removing this service so I renamed the file, but then the calendar disappeared from the notification area. Is there a way to remove this service but leave the calendar? I'm using 11.10.

• Game Object Design

  I'm having a problem with the way I designed my first simple game in C++. I have GameObject (abstract class) and ObjectA which inherits the update() and draw() methods from GameObject. My main loop contains a linked list of GameObject*, and while that list is not empty it cycles through it, calling update on each one. Up until this point, I thought the design was standard(?) and would work. However, when I call update on ObjectA() I run into two problems: ObjectA can die which messes up the list, which in turn throws off the loop in main. ObjectA can spawn more ObjectA's but these are local scope and the update() goes out of scope, creating problems in main's list of GameObjects. I think my design if alright, but I'm having such problems with segmentation faults that there must be something seriously wrong with at least one part of my implementation. If anyone could point out any serious mistakes or simple examples of this being done (or even alternative designs) then I would greatly appreciate it!

• PDF rendering crashes app Core Graphics

  EDIT: The memory leaks turned out to be unrelated to the crashes. Leaks are fixed but crashes remain, still mysterious. My (iPhone) app does lots of PDF loading and rendering, some of it threaded. Sometime, it seems always after I flush a page cash after getting a memory warning, the app crashes with a bad access when trying to draw a pdf page stored in an NSData object. • Iphone xCode - Navigation Controller on second xib view?

• How to download a wav file from the web to a location on iPhone using NSFileHandle and NSURLConnecti

  Hi all, I want to download a wav file from a web service, cache it on the iphone and playback it using AVAudioPlayer. Using NSFileHandle and NSURLConnection seems a viable solution when dealing with relatively large files. However, after running the app in the simulator I don't see any saved file under the defined directory (NSHomeDirectory/tmp). Below is my basic code. Where am I doing wrong? • UIWebView not loading URL when URL is passed from UITableView

  Hey Everyone, So i'm building a webView into my application to show the contents of a URL that I am passing from a selection in a UITableView. I know the UIWebView is loading content properly because if you hard code say http://www.google.ca into the NSURL then it loads fine, however when I'm passing the URL that I parsed from an RSS feed back from the UITableView it won't load the URL properly. I tried the debugger and the URL is coming out as nil right before I try and parse it, however I can use NSLog to print the value of it out to the console. here's the code in my UIViewController that has my UIWebView #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface ReadFeedWebViewController : UIViewController { NSString *urlToGet; IBOutlet UIWebView *webView; } @property(nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet UIWebView *webView; @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *urlToGet; @end Here's the code for my implementation's viewDidLoad method... // Implement viewDidLoad to do additional setup after loading the view, typically from a nib. - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; NSLog(@"Url inside Web View Controller - %@", urlToGet); NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:urlToGet]; NSURLRequest *requestObj = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]; [self.webView loadRequest:requestObj]; } Once again, I can print the URL to NSLog fine and if I hard code the URL into the NSURL object then it will load fine in the UIWebView.   I'm writing a Cocoa application, with a GUI designed in Interface Builder. I need to schedule background activity (at regular intervals) without blocking the UI, so I run it in a separate thread, like this: - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(NSNotification *)aNotification { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(schedule) withObject:nil]; } - (void) schedule { NSAutoreleasePool* pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSRunLoop* runLoop = [NSRunLoop currentRunLoop]; timer = [[NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:FEED_UPDATE_INTERVAL target:activityObj selector:@selector(run:) userInfo:nil repeats:YES] retain]; [runLoop run]; [pool release]; } I retain the timer, so I can easily invalidate and reschedule. Problem: I must also fire the run: method in response to GUI events, so it is synchronous (i.e. a "perform activity" button). Like this: [timer fire]; I could do this with performSelectorInBackground too, and of course it doesn't block the UI. But this synchronous firings run in another runloop! So I have no guarantee that they won't overlap. How can I queue all of my firings on the same runloop?

• Cocoa NSStream works with SSL, with socks5, but not at the same time

  Upon connecting (to an FTP, at first without SSL) I run: NSArray *objects = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"proxy.ip", [NSNumber numberWithInt:1080], NSStreamSOCKSProxyVersion5, @"user", @"pass", nil]; NSArray *keys = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:NSStreamSOCKSProxyHostKey, NSStreamSOCKSProxyPortKey, NSStreamSOCKSProxyVersionKey, NSStreamSOCKSProxyUserKey, NSStreamSOCKSProxyPasswordKey, nil]; NSDictionary *proxyDictionary = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjects:objects forKeys:keys]; [iStream retain]; [iStream setDelegate:self]; [iStream scheduleInRunLoop:[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] forMode:NSDefaultRunLoopMode]; [iStream setProperty:proxyDictionary forKey:NSStreamSOCKSProxyConfigurationKey]; [iStream open]; same for iStream. This allows me to connect succesfully through a socks5 proxy. If I continue without setProperty:proxyDictionary... • Setting an NSMutableArray in AppDelegate to be an NSMutableArray in

  What i'm trying to accomplish is to have an NSMutableArray defined in the AppDelegate. I then have two UIViewControllers. One view is responsible for displaying the array from the AppDelegate. The other view is used to add items to the array. So the array starts out to be empty. View1 doesn't display anything because the array is empty. The User goes to View2 and adds an item to the array in AppDelegate. Then when the user goes back to View1 it now displays one item. In an effort to retain values. allCourses = [[NSMutableArray alloc]init]; CalcAppDelegate *appDelegate = (CalcAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; allCourses = appDelegate.globalClasses; Then I would update my allCourses array by adding a new item. Then try to set the array in the AppDelegate to be equal to the modified one. CalcAppDelegate *appDel = (CalcAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; NSLog(@"Size before reset %d",[appDel.globalClasses count]); appDel.globalClasses = allCourses; NSLog(@"Size after reset %d",[appDel.globalClasses count]); What I'm seeing that's returned is 2 in the before, and 2 after. So it doesn't appear to be getting updated properly. Any suggestions?

The NSLog output for each value is correct. But for some reason when i put a break on the IF ([data isEqualToString:@"Done"]) it has no return value. I checked each value for what it was sending (and again, it was correct in the NSLog output) and i found that the value "theID" said "Out of scope". Although, again, the NSLog had the value in it correctly? So i searched the forum and found a simular problem. I took their advice and added "RETAIN" to the "theID" value like so: theID = [customObjInstance TID]; [theID retain]; However, that did not solve the issue... Here is the console NSLog output: [Session started at 2010-04-11 01:31:50 -0400.] wait_fences: failed to receive reply: 10004003 wait_fences: failed to receive reply: 10004003 nbTxt(5952,0xa0937500) malloc: *** error for object 0x3c0ebc0: double free *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug 2010-04-11 01:32:12.270 nbTxt[5952:207] 5122,Rob S.,5122,NB010203 The NSLog values i am sending is the last line "5122,Rob S.,5122,NB010203" Any help would be great :o) David

• json-framework: EXC_BAD_ACCESS on stringWithObject

  UPDATE: I found that the reason for the previous error was an error in the documentation. The method should be named proxyForJson, not jsonProxyObject... But I'm still stuck, though. I now get an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error inside stringWithObject some where. Any clues? UPDATE 2: My proxyForJson implementation is a cut-n-paste from then documentation: - (id)proxyForJson { return [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys: Navn, @"Navn", Adresse, @"Adresse", Alder, @"Alder", nil]; } Trying to make json serialization work for my custom objective-c class. As I understand the documentation, json-framework can serialize custom objects, if they implement the jsonProxyObject method. So I have this class: @interface MyObject : NSObject { NSString *Name; NSString *Addresse; NSInteger Age; } @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *Name; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *Addresse; @property (nonatomic, assign) NSInteger Age; - (id)jsonProxyObject; @end And I try to serialize an array with some instances in it: [json stringWithObject:list error:&error]; But all I get is he following error: "JSON serialisation not supported for MyObject" I guess the jsonWriter can't find my jsonProxyObject method for some reason, buy why? • Cocoa NSStream TCP connection to FTP

  Hi, I'm new to Cocoa, but not to programming. Recently I decided I wanted to write a FTP client for Mac, and so I first made it in the language I'm most comfortable in (on Windows), and then moved on to Cocoa when I had the workings of FTP communications down. My question is (apparently) a bit controversial: How do I establish a read/writeable connection to (a ftp server)? What I have so far (non working obviously): NSInputStream *iStream; NSOutputStream *oStream; NSHost *host = [NSHost hostWithAddress:@"127.0.0.1"]; [NSStream getStreamsToHost:host port:3333 inputStream:&iStream outputStream:&oStream]; // ftp port: 3333 [iStream retain]; [oStream retain]; [iStream scheduleInRunLoop:[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] forMode:NSDefaultRunLoopMode]; [oStream scheduleInRunLoop:[NSRunLoop currentRunLoop] forMode:NSDefaultRunLoopMode]; [iStream setDelegate:self]; [oStream setDelegate:self]; // which is not implemented apparently [iStream open]; [oStream open]; // .... [iStream write: (const uint8_t *)buf maxLength:8]; Which is partially based on http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/Conceptual/Streams/Articles/NetworkStreams.html Now, why have I chosen NSStream? Because while this question is merely about how to connect to a FTP stream, my whole project will also include SSL and as far as I've been able to search here and on google, NSStream is capable of "switching" to a SSL connection. I've not been able to see the connection being made (which I'm usually able to do), but I also heard something about having to write to the stream before the stream will open? Any pointers are greatly appreciated, and sorry if my question is annoying - I'm new to Cocoa :)

When i set a breakpoint in firstcontroller I see the string inside of nameString is correct but after that it returns to nil somehow.

• Why do properties require explicit typing during compilation?

  Compilation using property syntax requires the type of the receiver to be known at compile time. I may not understand something, but this seems like a broken or incomplete compiler implementation considering that Objective-C is a dynamic language. The property "comment" is defined with: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *comment; and synthesized with: @synthesize comment; "document" is an instance of one of several classes which conform to: @protocol DocumentComment <NSObject> @property (nonatomic, retain) NSString *comment; @end and is simply declared as: id document; When using the following property syntax: stringObject = document.comment; the following error is generated by gcc: error: request for member 'comment' in something not a structure or union However, the following equivalent receiver-method syntax, compiles without warning or error and works fine, as expected, at run-time: stringObject = [document comment]; I don't understand why properties require the type of the receiver to be known at compile time. Is there something I am missing? I simply use the latter syntax to avoid the error in situations where the receiving object has a dynamic type. Properties seem half-baked.
