  • How to disable scaling in JFreeChart?

    Hi All, We're using JFreeChart to build an engine to display graphs. This is a web service that runs on Tomcat + Java 1.5.0, and renders charts to PNGs and JPEGs (using ChartUtilities.writeChartAs{PNG,JPEG}() ). We've run into a problem where JFreeChart seems to scale everything inside the Plot area, but only by a few pixels. The result is that the graph looks inconsistent, e.g.: Minor ticks are sometimes stretched horizontally, so that they seem to be two pixels wide instead of one. We use a small image in the top-right of the plot area as a watermark. This is stretched by one pixel horizontally and vertically somewhere near (but not exactly) its middle. Background grid lines seem to appear on sub-pixel boundaries. I have not found a way to create an accurately dotted grid line. We have tried both 1.0.9 and 1.0.13, with exactly the same results (except for the minor ticks, which were not available in the older version). Also, rendering the image to a Frame instead of JPEG/PNG produced an identical result. Help is greatly appreciated, in advance :)

  • how to set a fixed color bar for pcolor in python matplotlib?

    I am using pcolor with a custom color map to plot a matrix of values. I set my color map so that low values are white and high values are red, as shown below. All of my matrices have values between 0 and 20 (inclusive) and I'd like 20 to always be pure red and 0 to always be pure white, even if the matrix has values that don't span the entire range. For example, if my matrix only has values between 2 and 7, I don't want it to plot 2 as white and 7 as red, but rather color it as if the range is still 0 to 20. How can I do this? I tried using the "ticks=" option of colorbar but it did not work.   • [C#] Two System.Drawing methods manifest slow drawing or flickery: Solutions? or Other Options?

    Hi all, I am doing a little graphing via the System.Drawing and im having a few problems. I'm holding data in a Queue and i'm drawing(graphing) out that data onto three picture boxes this method fills the picture box then scrolls the graph across. so not to draw on top of the previous drawings (and graduly looking messier) i found 2 solutions to draw the graph. Call plot.Clear(BACKGOUNDCOLOR) before the draw loop [block commented] although this causes a flicker to appear from the time it takes to do the actual drawing loop. call plot.DrawLine(channelPen[5], j, 140, j, 0); just before each drawline [commented] although this causes the drawing to start ok then slow down very quickly to a crawl as if a wait command had been placed before the draw command.   • Avoiding seasonality assumption for stl() or decompose() in R

    Hello everybody, I have high frequency commodity price data that I need to analyze. My objective is to not assume any seasonal component and just identify a trend. Here is where I run into problems with R. There are two main functions that I know of to analyze this time series: decompose() and stl(). The problem is that they both take a ts object type with a frequency parameter greater than or equal to 2. Is there some way I can assume a frequency of 1 per unit time and still analyze this time series using R?     Hi, I was wondering how I could create "component-scoped" beans, or so-to-say, "local variables inside a composite component" that are private to the instance of the composite component, and live as long as that instance lives. Below are more details, explained with an example: Suppose there is a "calculator" component - something that allows users to type in a mathematical expression, and evaluates its value. Optionally, it also plots the associated function. I can make a composite component that has: a text box for accepting the math expression two buttons called "Evaluate", and "Plot" another nested component that plots the function It is evidently a self-contained piece of function; so that somebody who wants to use it may just say <math:expressionEvaluator /> But obviously, the implementation would need a java object - something that evaluates the expression, something that computes the plot points, etc. - and I imagine it can be a bean - scoped just for this instance of this component, not a view-scoped or request-scoped bean that is shared across all instances of the component. How do I create such a bean? Is that even possible with composite components?

    I am doing experiments with different operational amplifier circuits and I need to plot my measured results onto a graph. I have two data sets: freq1 = [.1 .2 .5 .7 1 3 4 6 10 20 35 45 60 75 90 100]; %kHz Vo1 = [1.2 1.6 1.2 2 2 2.4 14.8 20.4 26.4 30.4 53.6 68.8 90 114 140 152]; %mV V1 = 19.6; Acm = Vo1/(1000*V1); And: freq2 = [.1 .5 1 30 60 70 85 100]; %kHz Vo1 = [3.96 3.96 3.96 3.84 3.86 3.88 3.88 3.88]; %V V1 = .96; Ad = Vo1/(2*V1); (I would show my plots but apparently I need more reps for that) I need to plot the equation, CMRR vs freq: CMRR = 20*log10(abs(Ad/Acm)); The size of Ad and Acm are different and the frequency points do not match up, but the boundaries of both of these is the same, 100Hz to 100kHz (x-axis). On the line of CMRR, Matlab says that Ad and Acm matrix dimensions do not agree. How I think I would solve this is using freq1 as the x-axis for CMRR and then taking approximated points from Ad according to the value on freq1. Or I could do function approximations of Ad and Acm and then do the divide operator on those. I do not know how I would code up this two ideas. Any other ideas would helpful, especially simpler ones.     Hello, I have a list of date/timestamps, and I would like to plot these to a chart in Excel. What I'm looking for is a chart that shows "events per hour" or something similar. Can this be done easily if I just have one column of data (the list of timestamps)? I'm using excel 2007 and looking at two data sets. One is 56k events and the other 750, both over the span of a few days.

  • Find the set of largest contiguous rectangles to cover multiple areas

    I'm working on a tool called Quickfort for the game Dwarf Fortress. Quickfort turns spreadsheets in csv/xls format into a series of commands for Dwarf Fortress to carry out in order to plot a "blueprint" within the game. I am currently trying to optimally solve an area-plotting problem for the 2.0 release of this tool. Consider the following "blueprint" which defines plotting commands for a 2-dimensional grid. Each cell in the grid should either be dug out ("d"), channeled ("c"), or left unplotted ("."). Any number of distinct plotting commands might be present in actual usage. . d . d c c d d d d c c . d d d . c d d d d d c . d . d d c To minimize the number of instructions that need to be sent to Dwarf Fortress, I would like to find the set of largest contiguous rectangles that can be formed to completely cover, or "plot", all of the plottable cells. To be valid, all of a given rectangle's cells must contain the same command. This is a faster approach than Quickfort 1.0 took: plotting every cell individually as a 1x1 rectangle. This video shows the performance difference between the two versions. For the above blueprint, the solution looks like this: . 9 . 0 3 2 8 1 1 1 3 2 . 1 1 1 . 2 7 1 1 1 4 2 . 6 . 5 4 2 Each same-numbered rectangle above denotes a contiguous rectangle. The largest rectangles take precedence over smaller rectangles that could also be formed in their areas. The order of the numbering/rectangles is unimportant. My current approach is iterative. In each iteration, I build a list of the largest rectangles that could be formed from each of the grid's plottable cells by extending in all 4 directions from the cell. After sorting the list largest first, I begin with the largest rectangle found, mark its underlying cells as "plotted", and record the rectangle in a list. Before plotting each rectangle, its underlying cells are checked to ensure they are not yet plotted (overlapping a previous plot). We then start again, finding the largest remaining rectangles that can be formed and plotting them until all cells have been plotted as part of some rectangle. I consider this approach slightly more optimized than a dumb brute-force search, but I am wasting a lot of cycles (re)calculating cells' largest rectangles and checking underlying cells' states. Currently, this rectangle-discovery routine takes the lion's share of the total runtime of the tool, especially for large blueprints. I have sacrificed some accuracy for the sake of speed by only considering rectangles from cells which appear to form a rectangle's corner (determined using some neighboring-cell heuristics which aren't always correct). As a result of this 'optimization', my current code doesn't actually generate the above solution correctly, but it's close enough. More broadly, I consider the goal of largest-rectangles-first to be a "good enough" approach for this application. However I observe that if the goal is instead to find the minimum set (fewest number) of rectangles to completely cover multiple areas, the solution would look like this instead: . 3 . 5 6 8 1 3 4 5 6 8 . 3 4 5 . 8 2 3 4 5 7 8 . 3 . 5 7 8 This second goal actually represents a more optimal solution to the problem, as fewer rectangles usually means fewer commands sent to Dwarf Fortress. However, this approach strikes me as closer to NP-Hard, based on my limited math knowledge. Watch the video if you'd like to better understand the overall strategy; I have not addressed other aspects of Quickfort's process, such as finding the shortest cursor-path that plots all rectangles. Possibly there is a solution to this problem that coherently combines these multiple strategies. Help of any form would be appreciated.

  • HP SmartArray P400 has slow read and write speed

    I have desktop in which I installed HP SmartArray P400 controller with two HP DF0146B8052 hard drives. I made RAID0 logical volume from them, but I am getting 20MB/s write speed and ~140-120MB/s read speed. Also there is quite low scatter for benchmark results (I am getting quite nice line) and it looks like controller is "capping" my speeds. I tried reseting controllers configuration and I haven't found any settings in HP ACU (Array Configuration Utility) to help me. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and M4A78 board Does anyone have ideas what could be wrong? Also I am attaching diagnostic results.

    I'm trying to create really simple "cluster" from 2 multicore computers using openmpi. My problem is that I can't find any tutorials on that matter. I don't want to use torque because it's not necessary in my case nevertheless all tutorials give configuration details either about torque or mpd (which doesn't exist in openmpi implementation). Could you give me some tips or links to appropriate manuals? Steps I've already completed: - openmpi installation - network configuration (computers see each other) - ssh password-less login to second computer I tried using machinefiles without further configuration and with just 2 IPs in it. But jobs don't seem to start at all after initialization part. (MPI seems to work because I'm able to scatter jobs on multiple cores of both computers without communication between them).

    Hello I've been told I HAVE TO have custom error bars for an assignment I have to hand in. Okay, I have a scatter graph with twelve points, and the error for each one is different. It's the same plus and minus, but different for each one. The twelve different error values are sitting nicely in a column. I have been told I can reference that column in "custom error bars" simply by indicating the range of values, like F2-F14. However, I get an error message every time. When I open Custom Error Bars, it is set up like this: ={} obviously waiting for a function. The error message says remove the equals sign. How should I enter the value range, please ?

Now I wanna measure roughly how hard it is to implement a server side checking that is agnostic to client input, that does not mess with the game experience so much. I don't wanna waste to much resource on this matter, since it's going to be initially a single player game, that I may or would like to introduce some kind of ranking, trading system later on. I'd rather deliver better more cool game features instead. I don't wanna have to guarantee super fast server response to keep the game going lag free. I'd rather go with more loose discrete control of key variables and instances. Like store user's action on a fifo buffer on the client, and push that actions to the server gradually. I'd love to see a elegant, generic solution that I could plug into my client game logic root (not having to scatter treatments everywhere in my client js) - and have few classes on Node.js server that could handle that - without having to mirror/describe all of my game entities a second time on the server.

    It may seem obvious but it’s worth stating again. The idea that mobile users are going to read lots of user assistance on their devices is just wrong. So, Jakob Nielsen’s post Mobile Content Is Twice as Difficult serves as a timely reminder for anyone thinking of putting manuals as a form of user assistance onto mobile phones. There is also an excellent post on UXMag.com, explaining that one of the ways to screw up with your iPhone app is to throw an old-style user manual into the user experience: 10 Surefire Ways to Screw Up Your iPhone App.   (Image copyright and referenced from UX Magazine 2010)   Instead, user assistance  alternatives—if any at all—include one-time tours, graphics, in-context instructions, and so on. Not so sure that importing “humor” and “personality” work so well in the enterprise app space, myself. However, the message is clear: iPhone users don’t read manuals. Great message. Users will figure it out, and if they can’t, well then your app’s UX is a problem and the app will fail. Shame some teams are obsessed with figuring out ways to port existing manuals to mobile platforms without any thought for the UX. Razorfish’s Scatter/Gather blog says it all: One thing that is particularly discouraging, most material currently available on “Creating Content for the iPad” or similar themes turns out to be about getting traditional content onto, or into, the iPad. Now, manuals for non-end users in PDF format on eReaders is a different matter. I have research on that, but it’s for another post.   • Newly installed Ubuntu 12.10 and weird graphics

    My machine: 2 GB RAM Intel Pentium Dual core E2180 @ 2 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 6200 LE My friend had recommended Ubuntu to me and I thought I might as well get used to Linux in anticipation for my Raspberry Pi. He said that Wubi was the easiest way to install and I installed it using Wubi. On my first ever boot up of Ubuntu from the Windows Bootloader started normally, and I logged on in a normal fashion, and my desktop loaded normally. I then pressed the Windows key/Power key and everything went wrong. Random lines of yellow and blue appeared on my screen, and changed location when I moved my mouse. The lines stayed for a few seconds and then partially went to I could sort of use my computer. I tried moving my mouse and the entire desktop looked like it broke apart, fragments of it just scatter across my screen at random angles. I could move my mouse and the pointer would move but clicking did nothing. I had to turn off my machine by removing the plug. I would love to get off Windows, but at least the doesn't completely mess up the graphics, and is relatively usable. Please help me solve this....

  • How display path ball will bounce?

    I'm trying to figure out a way to show the path a ball will travel, so that the player can line up a shot before they fire the ball. I can't think of a way to calculate this path in advance and show it to the player, especially if it involves collision detection. At first I thought I would run the game at a super high speed for one update, plot the path with some dotted lines where the ball bounced, and then in the next frame hide the 'tracer' ball. This seems to have two issues - Calculating collision detection without actually updating the frames and collision detection getting less reliable at high speeds. If they were straight lines I think I could figure this out in a while loop, but trying to take into account the speed of the ball, the curve of the path, the reflecting from other objects..it all seems a bit much. I'm not looking for any code and this isn't a platform specific question, more just help trying to figure out conceptually how this would work. Can this be done? Are there techniques to achieve this?

The game will load a list of suspects, while the players (witnesses) will have to identify the suspects of this robbery. The game should load a list of suspects to identify the one as quickly as possible. Admin can add/remove suspects in the lists and two or more lists of suspects can also be merged into one (to show it to the player). The question is which data structure will be suitable to develop the lists?
