• Large Scale VHDL techniques

  I'm thinking about implimenting a 16 bit CPU in VHDL. A simplish CPU. ADD, MULS, NEG, BitShift, JUMP, Relitive Jump, BREQ, Relitive BREQ, i don't know somethign along these lines Probably all only working with 16bit operands. I might even cut it down and use only a single operand and a accumulator. With Some status regitsters, Carry, Zero, Neg (unless i use a Accumlator), I know how to design all the parts from logic gates, and plan to build them up from first priciples, So for my ALU I'll need to 'build' a ADDer, proably a Carry Look ahead, group adder, this adder it self is make up oa a couple of parts, wich are themselves made up of a couple of parts. Anyway, my problem is not the CPU design, or the VHDL (i know the language, more or less). It's how i should keep things organised. How should I use packages, How should I name my processes and port maps? (i've never seen the benifit of naming the port maps, or processes)

• How should I structure my git commits?

  I'm trying to contribute to open source software for the first time, but I'm pretty inexperienced with version control systems. In particular, right now I want to make a number of changes to different parts of the code, but I'm not sure if the maintainer would want to integrate all of them into the master repository. However, the changes I'll be making are independent, i.e. they affect different parts of the file, or parts of different files. How should I go about making the changes? If I make a string of commits on the same branch, will the maintainer be able to pick and choose what he wants from the individual commit? E.g. can he patch in the changes I made in my second commit while ignoring the first one? Or should I make each change in a separate branch?

• Java memory mapped files and swap

  I'm looking at some memory mapped files in Java. Let's say I have a heap size set to 2gb, and I memory map a file that is 50gb - far more than the physical memory on the machine. The OS will cache parts of that 50gb file in the os file cache, the java process will have 2gb of heap space. What I'm curious about is how does the OS decide how much of the 50gb file to cache? For instance, if I have another java process, also with a 2gb heap size, will that 2gb be swapped out to allow the os to cache parts of the memory mapped file? Will parts of the heap space of the first process be swapped out to allow the OS to cache? Is there any way to tell the OS not to swap heap space for OS caching? If the OS doesn't swap out main processes, how does it determine how big its file cache should be?

• Tool for checking source for dependencies on specific Java versions

  Is there a quick way (e.g. tool) to detect, from the source (or maybe even from compiled classes), which parts of an application call Java API methods that are only implemented in a specific Java version? (e.g. which parts of my app are Java6-specific) I don't necessarily want to hop through all ClassMismatchErrors and avoid the trial-and-error-method. Let's say I only want to document which parts of an application won't work if they were writte for, e.g., Java6 and I want to run it in a version 5 JDK. Is there something like this? Google did not help this time, nor did I find any solution here (a rare case indeed:)

• What can't the NDK be used for?

  From the official NDK site: The Android NDK... provides headers and libraries that allow you to build activities, handle user input, use hardware sensors, access application resources, and more, when programming in C or C++. If you write native code, your applications are still packaged into an .apk file and they still run inside of a virtual machine on the device. The fundamental Android application model does not change. Yet, it is always described as a companion tool to the Android SDK and as a toolset that allows to "implement parts of your applications using native-code languages such as C and C++". My understanding from this is that, unlike the Java based SDK, the NDK is not designed to implement certain parts of an Android application. Is this correct? If so, what parts doesn't the NDK allow implementing?

• Convert hex to decimal keeping fractional part in Lua

  Lua's tonumber function is nice but can only convert unsigned integers unless they are base 10. I have a situation where I have numbers like 01.4C that I would like to convert to decimal.   Hi, I am stumped... I am trying to get the following output until a certain condition is met. test_1.jpg test_2.jpg .. test_50.jpg The solution (if you could remotely call it that) that I have is fileCount = 0 while (os.path.exists(dstPath)): fileCount += 1 parts = os.path.splitext(dstPath) dstPath = "%s_%d%s" % (parts[0], fileCount, parts[1]) however...this produces the following output. test_1.jpg test_1_2.jpg test_1_2_3.jpg .....etc The Question: How do I get change the number in its current place (without appending numbers to the end)? Ps. I'm using this for a file renaming tool.

  I've got table vendorparts that lists all my parts and their vendor(s). Parts with multiple vendors have multiple records in this table. I'm trying to write a query that only returns the partid, and vendor of parts that do not have a default vendor assigned. Partid Vendor Defaultflag 1 A 1 2 B 0 2 C 0 3 D 0 3 E 0 3 F 1 4 G 0 I would like to return the following: Partid Vendor 2 A 2 B 4 G I'm obviously having issues with partid 3 and getting the query to see it as having a default vendor assigned.

• WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - unable to access data

  I have a WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - (WD20000H2NC-00) Was working fine until a few days ago. I guess there was a power failure and after that I am unable to access the 'Public' or the 'Download' folder anymore. I have been searching for answers everywhere but came up empty handed. Web GUI still works, SSH works. I hooked up both the drives on my PC and UFS Explorer sees the drive. But so far I am unable to retrieve any of my data. I do not remember what RAID setting I used when I first got the drive. I can see from GUI that it is set as "Stripe". The drive contains 10 years of family pictures which I really do not want to loose. Sadly and stupidly, I didn't even keep a backup of this drive. Can somebody please help or point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your help. Disk Utility on Ubuntu reports 1405 bad sectors on one drive. How can I retrieve my data? Please help. We do not know where to substitute what to bring same output. So we finally drop the plan of baking. Again after a month, we get the interest in baking. If it calls for baking soda and cream of tarter, just use baking powder.Normally, when cream of tartar is used in a cookie, it is used together with baking soda. The two of them combined work like double-acting baking powder. When substituting for cream of tartar, you must also substitute for the baking soda. • Lost transparency in SDL surfaces drawn manually

  I want to create SDL_Surface objects for each layer of my 2d tile-based map so that I have to render only one surface per layer rather than too many tiles. With normal tiles which do not have transparent areas this works well, however I am not able to create a SDL_Surface with transparent pixels everywhere to be able to draw some tiles on specific parts which should be visible (I do NOT want the whole surface to appear with a specific opacity - I want to create overlaying tiles where one can look through). Currently I am creating my layers like this to draw with SDL_BlitSurface on them: SDL_Surface* layer = SDL_CreateRGBSurface( SDL_HWSURFACE | SDL_SRCALPHA, layerWidth, layerHeight, 32, 0, 0, 0, 0); If you have a look at this screenshot I have provided here you can see that the bottom layer with no transparent parts gets rendered correctly. However the overlay with the tree tile (which is transparent in the top left corner) is drawn own its own surface which is black and not transparent as expected. The expected result (concerning the transparency) can be seen here Can anyone explain me how to handle surfaces which are actually transparent rather than drawing all my overlay tiles separately?

• Music Notation Editor - Refactoring view creation logic elsewhere

  Let me preface by saying that knowing some elementary music theory and music notation may be helpful in grasping the problem at hand. I'm currently building a Music Notation and Tablature Editor (in Javascript). But I've come to a point where the core parts of the program are more or less there. All functionality I plan to add at this point will really build off the foundation that I've created. As a result, I want to refactor to really solidify my code. I'm using an API called VexFlow to render notation. Basically I pass the parts of the editor's state to VexFlow to build the graphical representation of the score. Here is a rough and stripped down UML diagram showing you the outline of my program: In essence, a Part has many Measures which has many Notes which has many NoteItems (yes, this is semantically weird, as a chord is represented as a Note with multiple NoteItems, individual pitches or fret positions). All of the relationships are bi-directional. There are a few problems with my design because my Measure class contains the majority of the entire application view logic. The class holds the data about all VexFlow objects (the graphical representation of the score). It contains the graphical Staff object and the graphical notes. (Shouldn't these be placed somewhere else in the program?) While VexFlowFactory deals with actual creation (and some processing) of most of the VexFlow objects, Measure still "directs" the creation of all the objects and what order they are supposed to be created in for both the VexFlowStaff and VexFlowNotes. I'm not looking for a specific answer as you'd need a much deeper understanding of my code. Just a general direction to go in. Here's a thought I had, create an MeasureView/NoteView/PartView classes that contains the basic VexFlow objects for each class in addition to any extraneous logic for it's creation? but where would these views be contained? Do I create a ScoreView that is a parallel graphical representation of everything? So that ScoreView.render() would cascade down PartView and call render for each PartView and casade down into each MeasureView, etc. Again, I just have no idea what direction to go in. The more I think about it, the more ways to go seem to pop into my head. I tried to be as concise and simplistic as possible while still getting my problem across. Please feel free to ask me any questions if anything is unclear. It's quite a struggle trying to dumb down a complicated problem to its core parts.

  The Feb 28th '10 edition of the Economist had a very informative artical (pg.74) on Toyota's over-stretched supply chain pointing out that they were ' the author of most of its own misfortunes".  James Womack is quoted in the piece on Toyota's rapid expansion 'meant working with a lot of unfamiliar suppliers who didn't have a deep understandin of Toyota's culture.  The majority of the problems almost certainly originated not in the Toyota factories but in those of the supppliers'. One purchasing executive said that it started in mid-2008, when the weaker parts of the supply chain were put under great strain. There is a need for visibility but not always there. Firms need transparancy and speed of communications to make sure defective parts and errors dont reach the customer. It concludes with guidance to manufacturers: "It may be safer not to have all your eggs in one basket, but to have maybe 3 suppliers for major components who can benchmark each other' - Toyota was the peerless exemplar, now seen as an awful warning

• International multi-OS keyboard layout for both coding and surfing?

  So yes, the problem has been raised in parts multiple times already. Still I'm looking for a keyboard layout that has the following features: Easy on fingers (Dvorak-like layouts welcome) Easy for coding Includes german characters (typing ä with AltGr-p is not ok). Works well with web-browsing (Ctrl-t and Ctrl-w on one hand, left one very much preferred, since that's where my ex-CapsLock, now Ctrl lies) Works well with default Emacs bindings Works on both Windows and Linux (at least easily installable) I've looked at Dvorak and Neo, they both have a "shortcut problem", i.e. web-browsing and most frequent Emacs combinations use both parts of the keyboard. Using right Ctrl is usually not an option, since it'll give me RSI much faster than keeping QWERTY/Z. Funnily enough, mirroring the default Neo layout would probably be enough for me. So, any ideas?

  In this article i'm gonna show you how i do when i have to update some content with AJAX and i have to change the URL. First, let's see an example to understand it better. If the user is reading a News with Id 1 and he clicked on another News with Id 2, if we update the content with AJAX the user is now reading the News Id 2 but the URL remains the same, for example: http://localhost/News/Read/1 Now let's see another example from Facebook. If i'm reading my profile and i click on Photos, Facebook updates it with AJAX and the URL switch to: http://www.facebook.com/guilhermegeek#!/guilhermegeek?sk=photos If we enter on that URL, it's mapped to: http://www.facebook.com/guilhermegeek?sk=photos The trick here is the parameters that we use after the #!. Those parameters are never sent to the server side, so we handle them on the client side (javascript).In the example of Facebook, he receives my profile name (guilhermegeek) and the action is to read photos. A few time ago i've written an article in my Portuguese blog explaining how to use an alternative to clients with javascript disabled. Like this: <a onclick="javascript:ReadNews(id);" href="#!News/Read/@id/">Title</a> When the user enter the link of that news, my function Read(); fills the News in the page. Then, i add the #!News/Read/@id/ to my URL. The SRS asked of us has to have at least 5 functional requirements, 5 non functional requirements and 1 constraint. Now I have tried my best to make one however I think there are still a lot of mistakes in it. • Broken Links in different browsers

  Hi I'm having problems with our website, http://www.accessiblehomehealthcare.com, which is a wordpress 2.7 (version). All of a sudden our RSS links broke on the right side, which has happened before and I fixed it within 5 mins. Now, when I fix it, it doesn't look right in different version of I.E. or Firefox, I have I.E. 8 and Firefox 3.6.15 and it looks good for the most part, but there are a few parts where the links are broken. One browser the links would look ok but go to another page and the links or logos would be broken. Certain parts of the website should be static(identical) to the other pages of the site, but if a link is broken on one page, its perfect on another page. I was wondering was there a secret code for wordpress to keep the sites compatible with all browser versions or is there a bigger issue???? Any help or suggestions will help???

• Pong Collision Help in C# w/ XNA

  Edit: My goal is to have it function like this: Ball hits 1st Quarter = rebounds higher (aka Y++) Ball hits 2nd Quarter = rebounds higher (using random value) Ball hits 3rd Quarter = rebounds lower (using random value) Ball hits 4th Quarter = rebounds lower (aka Y--) I'm currently using Rectangle Collision for my collision detection, and it's worked. Now I wish to expand it. Instead of it simply detecting whether or not the paddle/ball intersect, I want to make it so that it can determine what section of the paddle gets hit. I wanted it in 4 parts, with each having a different reaction to impact. My first thought is to base it on the Ball's Y position compared to the Paddle's Y position. But since I want it in 4 parts, I don't know how to do that. So it's essentially be if (ball.Y > Paddle.Y) { PaddleSection1 == true; } Except modified so that instead of being top half/bottom half, it's 1st Quarter, etc.
