• Is the increase in earning potential for a software developer enough to justify the cost of pursuing a masters degree? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is a Master's worth it? I am considering possibly enrolling in distance education at Kaplan University in order to pursue my masters. On one hand, I would prefer to have more free time so that I can continue to study for certifications and play with the technologies that interest me, work on my little side projects, etc. On the other hand, I am wondering how much difference it can make for my career if I go ahead and get a masters. I have been a .NET programmer since about 2004/2005. I'm currently working in a stable position but possibly considering a move to phoenix when my company's contract runs its course. There is not enough time between now and then for me to be complete with my masters, but I'm just trying to consider whether I should start. The main thing I am trying to determine is really whether or not the increase in earning potential is going to make the cost of pursuing my masters degree a good investment. Any thoughts?

• What is your most unusual javascript concept you've ever seen ?

  Hi, I've learned javascript at school but since I'm working with it and study about it every day, I've found very particular aspect of javascript that I didn't know about. Which at first, was very hard to understand for me and finally, I found it very usefull and easy to implement. And in the final, it gives to my code some kind of "beauty". An example I've once seen: function getter( input ) { result = { foo1 : 'bar1', foo2 : 'bar2', foo3 : 'bar3' }[input] || input || "default"; return result; } Do you guys have other examples of particular use you make of Javascript ? • Speaking at PASS 2012 Summit in Seattle #sqlpass

  I've been working as a programmer for a few months and I often study CCNA , CISSP for future. Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, I want to be a information / system security specialist. what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Restart my career from the network engineer ? Or do programmers make a good manager-position people ? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to information security? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder?

• Finding a good University [closed]

  I've currently been searching for good Universities to study Software Engineering or Computer Science at. The three Universities I've chosen so far are: Brighton University (This is my main pick so far) Plymouth Uni Manchester Metropolitan I would just like to know from people who have actually studied at these places to see if there all that there cracked up to be and I'm not going to be wasting up to four years of my life with a course that isn't very well taught. Would love to hear from people and if there are any Universities in the UK that you are/have studied at and are finding really good for learning Programming that would be nice too. Thanks!

• So with HTML5 what exactly.....is "supposed" to become phased out.

  So I know HTML5 is the "replacement" for Flash...however it's obviously not mainstream just yet......but what else is it supposed to replace. I ask this because web-dev has always been a secret kinda side-passion of mine (even though I a firmware programmer mostly doing C/Java stuff). And anyway I want to pursue a side thing at doing web design (I know basic XHTML/CSS + some CSS3) But what exactly is I guess...."pointless" to study? JavaScript I assume will always be a huge part of web design? (HTML5 isn't replacing that is it?) What about Ajax and CSS itself?) And then there's Flash....not sure if thats really worth putting effort into? Also there's Adobe Flex/Air......I'm a bit confused if you can't tell.

• Masters for Artificial Intelligence

  I am very interested in going to graduate school to study Artificial Intelligence. I am currently an undergrad student majoring in Computer Science, I will be finished in a year and a half so I figured now is a good time to start looking. I do not have a competitive GPA(3.3) so I am not looking for the top 25 graduate schools in AI such as listed in this ranking. So far I am taking into consideration the University of Georgia, they have a masters in AI, separate from a masters in CS. If you know of any other schools that has a decent masters in CS with an emphasis on AI or a masters in AI by itself please let me know. Thank you. USA/Canada schools only.

What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook. • Qualifying 'happiness' in software development?

  It occurred to me today that often the real goal of questions asked on sites such as this one (where the questions tend to be more open-ended than say, SO) is for the OP to become happier upon achieving the result. We often excuse this by saying our desire is to be more productive or release a better product, but if you continue to look down this path you can determine that the OP seeks greater productivity or product-quality because those are important to his/her 'happiness'. With that in-mind I ask this: Have their been efforts to study software development from this perspective? In other words, what practises increase happiness in those who develop software as a career, and who, if anyone, has researched this specifically? As I mentioned above, they may include strategies that increase productivity or improve product quality, but by no means should they be limited to just those.

• Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

  I apologize in advance if this is an inappropriate question for this SE. A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. I realize this is a rather open-ended question but any direction is appreciated.

  I am considering learning android development. I have some basic knowledge in C++. I downloaded the ADT plugin and eclipse. Now while starting from http://developers.android.com I see the codes were in XML. So I googled for learning XML. The best site I found was http://www.w3schools.org but there I found that for learning XML I have to learn HTML and CSS. So I learned the basics of HTML and CSS. But, Now I find in that learning java is a must. So can someone give idea about the sequental languages that I should study now? Should I learn php,mysql too. • What is the biggest weakness of students graduating with degrees in Computer Science?

  This question is directed more toward employers and graduate student advisors/professors but all opinions are welcome. What do you find is a common weakness of new hires and/or new grad students? Is it entirely variable dependent on the student and his or her university? Is there a particular skill or skillset that you wish new hires/researchers had expertise in and how can we remedey this deficiency? I realize that this question is general and really encapsulates two questions, one more about the weaknesses of new software engineers and one about the weaknesses of new researchers. However, both types of people tend to come from similar courses of study so I'm wondering if there is any overlap. Note: I am not a professor but I'm interested in how best to revise the undergraduate curriculum in CS.

There is sourceforge too, I have some code, say some library that I want to share with the community, and I am to decide the hosting site. • Installing multiple ubuntu partitions on same machine without corrupting GRUB

  I had only ubuntu installed on my pc, but I felt like adding another ubuntu (same version) partition so I could have one just for work/study and another one just for personal generic use. I installed it and it worked out okay, but I found I needed more space on the new created Ubuntu partition, so I booted up from the Live CD, and used GParted to move/shrink/grow the partitions as the Ubuntu's tutorials suggested it was pretty straightforward. But in doing all this I messed up with Grub, so when I start my system it shows: error: unknow filesystem grub rescue What would be the easiest way to recover it so I could have both partitions working? Btw, it wouldn't be a problem for me to lose the partitions if it's the shortest/easiest way. Thanks in advance.

• Where is a good place to learn how to develop games?

  I'm brazilian and I want to learn how to develop a game in some college or something like that, but I don't know any place here to learn it. Here is not that good either to develop games, as we don't have many companies to do that. So, I was thinking about working in some place else, while I study it. What I really want to know is, a good place to learn, and a country that developers are well payed to be able to pay my course and still have money to do something else.
