• Does it really takes 5-10 years (or more) to be really good in programming?

  I don't get it. Why is there such a notion that it takes this long to be really proficient in a single language? I somehow think that this statement meant that it takes such a long time to master your language, and use it in a lot of context (web programming, desktop applications, mobile applications, etc.). Adding to that, sometimes you get stuck on a single language in your job and doing repetitive things and don't have much time to study other languages, thus for a certain amount of time, you don't really do much learning at all, and that adds to the amount of time. What do you think?

• Is it viable to become a contract programmer straight out of college?

  I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and four months research experience designing and implementing a research project. I realize this is highly dependent on my skill set - which includes C, C++, Java, Python, and SQL. I feel I have an advantage in two ways: I am young and am not afraid to work overtime. I am willing to take lower pay to gather a client base/experience, and work nights/weekends to get a few projects under my belt. This may be cliche, but I feel that I can learn new technologies quicker than most. At the very least, I am not a slow study. With this being said, is it viable for me to become a contract programmer? Or do I need the 10+ year skill set that most contractors bring to the table?

• Leapfrog Crammer won't mount as a USB flash drive

  I can't seem to get the Leapfrog Crammer study and sound system to show up as a flash drive under ubuntu so I can transfer stuff to it. I don't want to install the leapfrog bloatware, can someone help me with this? Additional Information: When I plug my crammer into my computer it shows a 1 MB file system with a link to download the crammer software. I want to know how to access the rest of the crammer's file system so I can transfer music to it. The crammer does not show any other partitions in natulius. According to an article on the internet, the crammed is divided into three partitions: One with a link to install the crammer software, one with all content(music, flash cards, etc.) and one for firmware. I want to know how to access the one with the content so I can add music to the player. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

• How to get familiar with "what happens underneath of Java"?

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly. I started looking for some keywords in Amazon, ended up reading books like "pragmatic programmer", "clean code", "code complete" which IMO they are not what I am looking for. Could you please give me some learning resources (books, articles, blog posts, online trainings) for this matter? I also read this post as well: Approaching Java/JVM internals But I think I need a pre-step before jumping into the OpenJDK, right?!

  Ok, the title might be a little misleading. I have a Window class that draws widgets inside itself in the constructor. The widgets are all of the same type. So I pass a list of dictionaries, which contain the parameters for each widget. This works quite nicely, but I am worried that the interface to callers is obfuscated. That is, in order to use Window, one has to study the class, construct a correct list of dictionaries, and then call the constructor with only one parameter - widgets_params. Is this good or bad design? What alternatives does the python syntax provide?

• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24. • Is it correct to refer to a performing programming assignments as a "computer labs"?

  Can we say that developing an algorithm is a "laboration"? Are these "labs"? At engineering performing an exercise or an assignement is refered to as "labs" but are those "labs" when in fact it is mainly software problem solving pretty much like numeric methods in math which are not "labs". When studying engineering such as electrical engineering or physics you might do a "laser lab" or a "chemical laboration" if you study chemical engineering for instance. How do you define "lab"? Just performing something experimental? This is sort of double meaning also the physical environment at universities which we call "computer labs" that in fact are just rooms with computers.

  I have a service in a very big city, and to make my ads stand out, I display the name of the neighborhood in the display URL, although the actual URL is always the same page with my services for any neighborhood. Will google decrease my rating for this? In a different note, you can also express your ideas about if it's sensible to do this or not, ie, the client might feel I'm deceiving them. Although this will be subjective, unless there is some scientific study. Thank you!

  what is the best approach to learning for an undergrad operating systems course in order to understand the concepts and get a good grade in the exam? I know that some courses can be mastered through diligently reading the textbook or attending lectures while for others the concepts can only be understood by doing hands on projects. Is there a general studying approach that should be adopted for this type of a course? I know this may be subjective but I am looking for personal experiences/study methods by those who have taken similar courses to see if there is one particular method that worked well for the majority.

  I study physics and computer science and both studies include minor programming tasks whereas larger tasks are only (potentially) a part of larger projects like for your thesis. When I look at job postings for scientific jobs e.g. in the area of HPC they usually ask for "extensive programming skills in C/C++ and HPC" or the like. This is what I would like to achieve, but frankly I don't know how. I don't mean to mourn, but you can imagine that studying physics/CS means having a busy schedule so I couldn't even work part time as a research assistant to get practice without negative influence on my grades. The second problem is that I lack ideas on what to code in my spare time. I would like to do something useful but even for open source projects you apparently need a whole lot of time and depending on the type of software a lot of experience to be useful. I would be grateful for any advice you can give me.

I could start with the official Lua tutorials, but I would rather study scripts that were written specifically for games and learn the syntax from there as I believe this is faster and more related to what I want. Can you recommend tutorials in video or text that are very detailed in explaining the code? Or some open source game with heavily commented code? What I want is something detailed that walks me through it, so I start understanding both the syntax and how each piece relate to each other, like "First of all, install this, this and that." "So, here we are defining a new function that will make the player jump." "This is the main script that calls the other ones. It defines these variables." "This function tests if the player is alive."

Now, I'm 15 and I would say I'm quite good C# and I'm reading through Jon Skeet's C# In Depth. I also have some experience with VB, C++ and Assembler (mostly reverse engineering). I really love coding, which got me wondering about college, what I can study to get into the software business. However, I would like to earn some money now, so I can spend it on better hardware, on development tools or on other hobbies. This is hard because I don't have any work experience nor have I done any programming-related studies. It's also not legal for me to do any freelancing jobs as I'm under the age of 18. Developers must deal with technical aspects, such as async programming (no UI blocking), no console program (must design a UI that cope with "Standard"), no CPU hungry (pause app if deactivated), need to study the permission matrix (not full access right), and more ...
