    On the iPhone, I use MagicJack to get completely free calls over WiFi to US numbers. I'm looking for a similar app to enable me to call UK numbers for free on the iPhone. Does anyone know of one? To make this question of broader applicability to everyone, what apps also allow free calling to other countries? Any smartphone platform (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone) could be useful. Note: I'm talking only about apps that allow completely free calling - the Apple app stores at least are full of apps that allow "cheap" calling. Suspicious apps that require credit card numbers upfront, etc., aren't as interesting.

    It is recommended to keep some percentage of an SSD free for relocation ( Is free space required on a SSD for performance? ). However, is this rule meant per partition or per disk (whole SSD)? So, if I want to keep 20% free for performance reasons, is it acceptable if one partition is 95% filled, while another is almost empty and the overall empty disk space still is 20. Or does each partition has to fulfill the rule of 20% empty space?

  • Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

    Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2.     The other day, I wrote about how to download and install Java ME SDK plugin for NetBeans. If you are using NetBeans 7.2.1 or later, you don't have to go through the whole process at all. It's now a matter of a few clicks, because all the plugins are now all in NetBeans update server. Here is a new way to install and integrate Java ME SDK plugins for NetBeans. 1. On NetBeans, go to "Tools"- "Plugins". 2. Click on "Available Plugins" tab. Locate "Java ME SDK Tools". 3. Check the tools you want to install, and click "Install" button at the bottom left corner. 4. NetBeans will restart, and that's it! Remember that different Java ME SDK requires different version of Plugins. If you are using Java ME SDK 3.0.5 or earlier, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 2.0 (works with NetBeans 7.1.2 or earlier) If you are using Java ME SDK 3.2 or later, you must install Java ME SDK Tool version 3.0 (works with NetBeans 7.2 or later)

  • Calling a function that resides in the main page from a plugin?

    I want to call a function from within plugin, but the function is on the main page and not the plugin's .js file. EDIT I have jQuery parsing a very large XML file and building, subsequently, a large list (1.1 MB HTML file when dynamic content is copied, pasted, then saved) that has expand/collapse functionality through a plugin. The overall performance on IE is super slow and doggy, assuming since the page/DOM is so big. I am currently trying to save the collapsed content in the event.data when it is collapsed and remove it from the DOM, then bring it back when it is told to expand... the issue that I am having is that when I bring the content back, obviously the "click" and "hover" events are gone. I'm trying to re-assign them, currently doing so inside the plugin after the plugin expands the content. The issue then though is that is says the function that I declare within the .click() is not defined. As I was reviewing the code in this post this morning after being away over the weekend, I found where I had err'd. This: $(event.data.target + 'a.addButton').click(addResourceToList); Should be this (notice the space before a.addbutton): $(event.data.target + ' a.addButton').click(addResourceToList); Same issue with the "li.resource".   • How to have multiple instances of jQuery plugin on single page?

    I'm writing a simple jQuery plugin, but I'm having trouble being able to use multiple instances on a page. For instance, here is a sample plugin to illustrate my point: (function($) { $.fn.samplePlugin = function(options) { if (typeof foo != 'undefined') { alert('Already defined!'); } else { var foo = 'bar'; } }; })(jQuery); And then if I do this: $(document).ready(function(){ $('#myDiv').samplePlugin({}); // does nothing $('#myDiv2').samplePlugion({}); // alerts "Already defined!" }); This is obviously an over-simplified example to get across the point. So my question is, how do I have two separate instances of the plugin? I'd like to be able to use it across multiple instances on the same page. I'm guessing that part of the problem might be with defining the variables in a global scope. How can I define them unique to that instance of the plugin then? Thank you for your guidance!

  • In Silverlight 3 how can I get the call to HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute() call to call other co

    I'm trying to take a snapshot of my Silverlight control using WriteableBitmap and it works fine, however, it only takes a snapshot of what is showing. I'm trying to resize the Silverlight control so it will show everything and then take a screenshot, however, the code doesn't resize the control until after the code after the call all runs which is the snapshot code... I can get this work using a timer to fire the snapshot after the other code has caused the resize but I'm wondering if there is a better way. The HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute call has to be called from the UI thread so I'm assuming that's where the problem is. The fact that it is being dispatched onto the UI thread while the rest of the code is not and so the other code is being run first. Is there anyway to create a new event or attach to the call to determine when it has been run to then fire off my snapshot code?   • Free SQL Server training? Now you’re talking.

    SQL Server user groups are everywhere, literally all over the globe there are SQL Server professionals meeting on a regular basis, sharing ideas, solving problems, learning about how to do new stuff and new ways to do old stuff and it’s all for free. I don’t have detailed figures but of all the SQL Server professionals there are only a small number of them attend these user groups. Those people are the people that are taking the time and making then effort to make themselves better at their chosen trade, more employable and having a good time. For free. I don’t know why but there are many people that don’t seem to want to be the best they can be. Some of you enlightened people that do already attend could be doing more though. Have you ever spoken at  your group? Not just in the break while you have a mouthful of pizza and a drink in your hand but had the attention of the whole group listen to you speak. It doesn’t need to be a full hour, it doesn’t need to be some obscure deeply technical demonstration of SQL Server internals, just a few minutes on something that you do that might help other people with their daily work. A neat process that helps you get from Problem A to Solution B. There is no need to get concerned that becoming a speaker means that you suddenly have to know more than anyone else in the room. This is you talking about something that you experienced. What you did, what you would repeat, what you might do differently next time. No one in the audience can pick you up on a technicality. If someone comes out with a great idea that you hadn’t thought of, say “That’s a great idea, I didn’t think of that while we had the problem on our hands. I’ll try to remember that for next time”. If someone is looking to show you up for picking the wrong decision (and this, in my experience, is very uncommon indeed) then you simply give a reply like “Well, at the time we chose that option. Perhaps another time then we would tackle things differently but we were happy with how our solution worked”. It’s sharing things like this that makes user groups have a real value, talking about how you coped with or averted a disaster, a handy little section of code or using a tool in a particular way that you take for granted that might, just might, be something that other people haven’t thought of that solves a problem or saves some time for them. At the next meeting you might get the same benefit from a different person and so it goes on. As individuals benefits so the community benefits. For free. Things I encourage you to do; If you are a chapter or user group leader; encourage someone from your group who has never spoken before to start speaking. If you are a chapter or user group attendee that hasn’t spoken before; speak for at least 5 minutes on something related to SQL Server at any group meeting. If you don’t currently attend a user group; please go along to you nearest one when they are meeting next and invest in yourself and your future.     Microsoft do not sell Windows 8's DVD in China, We can only update to Windows 8 from Windows 7 , Vista or Windows XP SP3. However, I am a Ubuntu user, I don't have Windows 7 , Vista or Windows XP SP3 installed in my laptop. I was planning to buy a DVD of Windows 8 Pro from Amazon.com, but I don't know if it can be activated in China. Does anybody know? The customer service of Microsoft is too busy right now.

    So, I finally gave up on all my previous the Microsoft Mobile/Phone OS devices and made my switch to Android this year. I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with CyanogenMod 9.1.0 (http://get.cm/get/jenkins/7086/cm-9.1.0-n7000.zip) and ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 (http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-n7000.zip) since August this year and I am so happy with the performance and the flexibility it offers me. As a software developer by profession, I would expect most of my gadget to be highly customizable and programmable (one time or at intervals) to suit my needs as close as it can. I was introduced to Automation for Android – Tasker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en) via reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker) and the word ‘automation’ was enough for me to dive right into this app. Only automation that I did earlier was switching profiles depending on location on there phones. And now, just imagine a complete set of possibilities that can be automate on the phone or via the phone. I did my research and found a couple of other tools that do the same/as close as what Tasker can do and few of them are even free. There’s one even by Microsoft called on{X} (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.onx.app&hl=en). Microsoft’s on{X} really caught my eye. You can write code for your phone on the web application by them, deploy it on your phone and even trace the flow all using your PC. Really brilliant, I love the fact that it’s all JavaScript. Here comes the but, it is still very very young and it’s policy of accessing my News Feed on Facebook is not something that I can not digest. On{X} is good, but as I said earlier, the API is not very mature and hence, I gave up on it. I bought Tasker, the best 5,00 € I spent in ages and I want to talk about it in this post. I am still a “noob” while operating this tool, but I tried my shot at automating WhatsApp (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp&hl=en), a popular messenger for various platform. The requirement for the automation is that, if I send a WhatsApp ‘wru’ message to the phone, it should respond back giving the location and battery level of my phone. It could be useful, if you like to locate your misplaced phone or automatically reply to your partner/friend, honestly, I don’t know what you will use it - through this post, I am just introducing automating WhatsApp using Tasker.   • How to configure TATA Photon+ EC1261 HUAWEI

    I'm running ubuntu 10.04. I have a newly purchased TATA Photon+ Internet connection which supports Windows and Mac. On the Internet I found a article saying that it could be configured on Linux. I followed the steps to install it on Ubuntu from this link. I am still not able to get online, and need some help. Also, it is very slow, but I was told that I would see speeds up to 3.1MB. I dont have wvdial installed and cannot install it from apt as I'm not connected to internet Booting from windows I dowloaded "wvdial" .deb package and tried to install on ubuntu but it's ended with dependency problem. Automatically, don't know how, I got connected to internet only for once. Immediately I installed wvdial package after this I followed the tutorials(I could not browse and upload the files here) . From then it's showing that the device is connected in the network connections but no internet connection. Once I disable the device, it won't show as connected again and I'll have to restart my system. Sometimes the device itself not detected(wondering if there is any command to re-read the all devices). output of wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.cof: #wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf Editing `/etc/wvdial.conf'.     I try to setup a VPN connection to ItsHidden on Ubuntu 9.10. I double-checked my credentials in the VPN configuration, but I don't think that this is problem.   • The emergence of Atlassian's Bamboo (and a free SQL Source Control license offer!)

    The rise in demand for database continuous integration has forced me to skill-up in various new tools and technologies, particularly build servers. We have been using JetBrain's TeamCity here at Red Gate for a couple of years now, having replaced the ageing CruiseControl.NET, so it was a natural choice for us to use this for our database CI demos. Most of our early adopter customers have also transitioned away from CruiseControl, the majority to TeamCity and Microsoft's TeamBuild. However, more recently, for reasons we've yet to fully comprehend, we've observed a significant surge in the number of evaluators for Atlassian's Bamboo. I installed this a couple of weeks back to satisfy myself that it works seamlessly with Red Gate tools. As you would expect Bamboo's UI has the same clean feel found in any Atlassian tool (we use JIRA extensively here at Red Gate). In the coming weeks I will post a short step-by-step guide to setting up SQL Server continuous integration using the Red Gate command lines. To help us further optimize the integration between these tools I'd be very keen to hear from any Bamboo users who also use Red Gate tools who might be willing to participate in usability tests and other similar research in exchange for Amazon vouchers.
