• Python library to detect if a file has changed between different runs?

  Suppose I have a program A. I run it, and performs some operation starting from a file foo.txt. Now A terminates. New run of A. It checks if the file foo.txt has changed. If the file has changed, A runs its operation again, otherwise, it quits. Does a library function/external library for this exists ? Of course it can be implemented with an md5 + a file/db containing the md5. I want to prevent reinventing the wheel.

• Why are Asynchronous processes not called Synchronous?

  So I'm a little confused by this terminology. Everyone refers to "Asynchronous" computing as running different processes on seperate threads, which gives the illusion that these processes are running at the same time. This is not the definition of the word asynchronous. a·syn·chro·nous –adjective 1. not occurring at the same time. 2. (of a computer or other electrical machine) having each operation started only after the preceding operation is completed. What am I not understanding here?

  Hi All, I am going to create a new asp.net web service (.NET framework 2.0), the functionality of the web service is to recieve xml input, perform the relevant operation (add/modify/delete) based on the input and return codes which indicates the status of the operation. I am planning to implement two layer architecture (Business layer and database layer) for this web service, could anyone advise whether this is the right structure or any other structure would perform well than this. • sql data source re binding question

  In my gridview after an insert operation has been done I am filtering the sqldatasource by ID. I am getting an error that the item drop down box selected value is not in the list. To test my theory I created a new sql data source with only the select statement and after the insert operation I am binding it to my grid view and filtering by Id and I get my result. The question Having a second data source is not the solution so is it possible that there is some way to use sqldatasource1? what I tried is sqldatasource.databind() and gridview.databind() on the inserted and inserting metheds in many test cases but still that doesnt work. I dont have any filters applied on the original data source?

• Swing invokeLater never shows up, invokeAndWait throws error. What can I do?

  I have this code: try { SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(new Runnable() { public void run() { try { dialog.handleDownload(); } catch (IOException io) { io.printStackTrace(); } } }); } catch(Exception io) { io.printStackTrace(); } in the handleDownload I'm reading an inputstream, calculating a progress bar's value, and setting it to that. So, when I click a button, a new JFrame opens up and does all the stuff I wrote above. If I have the dialog.handleDownload by itself ( in no SwingUtilities method ), it freezes until the operation is finished. If I add it in a invokeLater it's closed very fast ( I can't see anything, and the operation is not finished ). If I add it in a invokeAndWait I get the invokeAndWait cannot be called from the event dispatcher thread error. What should I do?

• How can I configure a Hudson job to use a specific JDK?

  I have a number of projects running on a Hudson slave. I'd like one of them to run Ant under Java6, rather than the default (which is Java5 in my environment). In the project configuration view, I was hoping to find either: An explicit option allowing me to set a custom JDK location to use for this project. A way to set custom environment variables for this project, which would allow me to set JAVA_HOME to the JDK6 location. The would make Ant pick up and run on Java6 as desired. Is there a way to do either of the above? If one of those facilities is available, I can't see how to access it. I'm running on Hudson 1.285. I would rather avoid using an "execute shell" operation instead of the "invoke Ant" operation if possible: my slave is on z/OS and Hudson doesn't seem to create the temporary shell scripts properly on this platform (probably an encoding issue).

• How to handle the close (big X) button at the source?

  We would like under some circumstances to block the action of the close button in the title bar. The problem is that it's a MDI applications and it seems that we will have to add code in each forms to cancel the operation in the Closingevent handler. It seems that the child forms are the first to receive the event. There is no way to add code at a single place to cancel the close operation. Information on how the close event is propagated to the child form would be welcome. Is there a simple way of doing what we want to do?

• AJAX in ASP.NET - How do I check a checkbox and have the action reflected in the database?

  This is about as beginner as it gets regarding AJAX, but here it goes. I want to have one checkbox somewhere on an ASP.NET web form (ASPX). When the user clicks the checkbox, I want one of those spinning indicators to show. While that spinning indicator is showing, I want an update operation to occur in the database to reflect that the user has intended for that checkbox to be checked. update MyTable set CheckboxChecked = 1 Then, as soon as the update operation has occurred, I want that to be reflected in the checkbox by removing the spinning indicator and replacing it with the standard checked checkbox. I'm guessing this is done with an UpdatePanel and possibly an update statement followed by a looped call to a select statement... but I have never used AJAX before and have no idea how to go about it. The result of which needs to be redirected to the same page. However after the operation on using the following: return new ModelAndView("newUser"); //This view "newUser" actually maps to the popped up window. A similar new window again pops up and the message gets displayed on this new page. How to go about this?

  Hello all, I have a series of usercontrols on a page that are displayed based on a selection. Each usercontrol contains a Delete button with a ConfirmButton/ModalPopupExtender combo attached to it. This works great when first loading any of the usercontrols--clicking delete shows my Confirm Modal popup and hitting yes or no causes an async postback to perform the operation. But if I move away from the usercontrol and come back to it, the Confirm Modal Popup appears but clicking yes or no now causes a full postback (the operation does still take place). Why does changing the visible property cause this?

• How to stop a MFC/win32 control re-painting

  I have a CRichEditCtrl, and an algorithm works on its contents in-place, iterating through the contents and making changes. This seems to cause it to re-paaint every time, which causes flickering and a noticeable time to complete the operation, especially if the control starts scrolling. I wondered if there's a neat way for me to stop it repainting for a period. It's actually a custom subclass of CRichEditCtrl in use so I was thinking something like: void MyCustomEditCtrl::DoAlgorithm() { enableRepaint(false); ... //to the actual work ... enableRepaint(true); } What's the neatest approach? A custom on-paint handler which does nothing when an operation is in progress? Or can repainting actually be disabled?

  I am having a problem changing a List that has a set-size in Java. I understand that I can't add or remove from this list but why can't I use set? When I use set the UnsupportedOperationException is thrown as well as when I use add and remove which is expected. set public Object set(int index, Object element) Replaces the element at the specified position in this list with the specified element (optional operation). I understand its an optional operation its just that want to replace that one element of the list with another element. Is there any way I can do this?

This operation is very expensive, so I would like to memoize the results in the hash.   I currently have a table which stores a load of statistics such as views, downloads, purchases etc. for a multiple number of items. To get a single operation count on each item I can use the following query: SELECT , COUNT() FROM stats WHERE operation = 'view' GROUP BY item_id This gives me all the items and a count of their views. I can then change 'view' to 'purchase' or 'download' for the other variables. However this means three separate calls to the database. Is it possible to get all three in one go?

Since my domain account is a member of the local Administrators group on these boxes, is there still a way to override them locally? For instance, GP prevents changing the power management option "Turn off the display" (even changing it from cmd fails: POWERCFG -X -monitor-timeout-ac 60 = "An unexpected error condition has occurred. Unable to perform operation. You may not have permission to perform this operation.") Even when logging on with a local account and not the domain account, it's not possible to change the setting anymore ..

Do you construct the DML syntax in the Java code and send the statements to DB engine for execution, or you just collect the parameters and then make a call to stored procedure with the parameters via java code? or neither because that's just not how to do it? can anyone give an example of a full database utility classes to do database operations in Java app? also what about the transaction manager?   I've had a test, and there was a question I lost some points on, because I wasn't able to answer it : Which of the following is NOT a condition which can cause a thread to block : Calling an objects's wait() method Waiting for an I/O operation Calling sleep() Calling yield() Calling join() As far as I know, all of these are blocking calls : wait() returns when an something calls notify(), blocks until then If the thread is WAITING for an I/O operation then it's obviously blocked sleep(), obviously, blocks until the time runs out, or something wakes up the thread yield() "cancels the rest of the thread's timeslice" (lacking a better term), and returns only when the thread is active again join() blocks until the thread it's waiting for terminates. Am I missing something here?

  I set up BACS (Broadcom Teaming) to team two NIC on a Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain Controller. Networking still works okay, I can ping the gateway etc, but both DNS and Active Directory fail to start with various 40xx errors. The team that I created is Smart load Balancing with Failover, with one backup and only one in smart load balancing (So really it is just failover). I have the team the same IP address that the single active NIC had before. Anyone seen this before, or have any ideas what the problem might be?
