• Server Configuration / Important Parameter for 500Req/Second

  I am configuring a server to be used as nginx server for a very heavy traffic website. It is expected to receive traffic from a large number of IP addresses simultaneously. It is expected to get 500Req/Second with atleast 20Million unique IPs connecting it. One of the problems I noticed in my previos server was related to iptables / ipconntrack. I am not aware of this behaviour and would be glad to know which all parameters of a ubuntu / debian (32/64) bit machine should I tweek to get maximum performance from the server. I can put in a lot of RAM on the server but mission critical task is the response times. We ideally dont want any connection to be hanging / timing out / waiting and want as low as possible overall response times. P.S. We are also looking for a kick ass freelancer system admin who can help us figuring / setting this all up. • Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

  I'm having a problem similar to that posted in this question: Missing Certificate template From certificate to issue The short version is that I've created a duplicate certificate template and I'm trying to add it to my domain CA so that I can issue certificates with it. However, when I go into the Certification Authority MMC and go to "Certificate Templates - New - Certificate Template To Issue", my template is missing (along with quite a number of other templates that are present in the domain). Unlike the previous question, however, my CA is running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Our organization has a single DC and a single CA, so I'm not seeing where there could be propagation delay. Any ideas how to get my template to show so that I can issue certificates?

• nginx: server_name and server_addr wrong with reverse proxy in front of it

  I have stunnel in front of nginx in order to handle ssl. (I'm aware that nginx can handle ssl, but I'm migrating off nginx and this is a necessary step.) Stunnel and nginx are running on the same box. Without stunnel in front of nginx, nginx got the server_addr and server_name as the public ip of the box and the domain of the url I was fetching, respectively. Now with stunnel, nginx thinks the server_addr and server_name are 127.0.0.1 and localhost respectively. This is screwing up a bunch of things. How can I make nginx get (or stunnel send) the correct server_addr and server_name?

  having a problem installing git on redhat enterprise 3. When I try and install the rpm it gives a circular dependency problem. • Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

  I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

  I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? • Hybrid Shutdown in Windows 8

  Referring to this article published September 8, 2011, it gives instructions on how to to do a full (non-hybrid) shutdown in Windows 8 from the command line. We have an option in the UI to revert back to the Windows 7 shutdown/cold boot behavior, or since that’s likely a fairly infrequent thing, you can use the new /full switch on shutdown.exe. From a cmd prompt, run: shutdown /s /full / t 0 to invoke an immediate full shutdown. shutdown /s /full /t 0 I tried this in W8 Enterprise RTM trial, but did not work, so I did a shutdown /? and noticed they have changed the command for a Full shutdown It appears the /s switch now does the full shutdown as explained in the MS article, and the /hybrid switch does the hybrid shutdown for fast startup. Can anyone confirm this change in other RTM versions of Windows 8? Any Microsoft docs on this change are welcome.

  I'm having a weird problem here. I upgraded a Windows XP computer from IE6 to IE8 yesterday and everything seemed to work normally until today. Now I can't open any browser on this computer. The computer had Google Chrome installed and it suddenly disappeared, I installed it again and now it dowsn't open either. I also installed Firefox and the same thing happened. The computer had no anti virus, I installed Ad-Aware, run a full scan and it detected some malware, but browsers are still not working Any ideas?

• How to prove that an email has been sent?

  I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

• How to enable mysqli extension on redhat?

  My php.ini says: Additional .ini files parsed /etc/php53/php.d/curl.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/fileinfo.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/json.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysqli.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/pdo_mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/phar.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/zip.ini mysqli.ini is loaded.. But still i get this, PHP Fatal error: Class 'mysqli' not found i tried enabling dynamic loading and initialize php scripts with dl("mysqli.so"); i also tried recompiling the php source: ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/lib64/mysql --with- mysqli=/usr/lib64/mysql/mysql_config even this didn't work. Can anybody help me solve my problem? Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga). x86_64 GNU/Linux. No access to RHN. Thanks.

• Windows 7: Can't see ISO file in C:\

  I used DVD shrink to create an ISO file and saved it into C:\ The ISO file is visible with some programs but not with others. The file is not hidden as far as I am aware. But it cannot be seen by Windows Explorer, DVD Decrypter or a bunch of other programs. If I search for the file using Windows 7's Start Menu search tool, I can see the file and I can right click and select Properties. The Properties window appears OK, but if I try to change tabs on the property window, I receive an error message as though the file is not there. DVD Shrink can still open the file OK. I can also find the file using Agent Ransack (a file searching tool), but then I cannot open it. What gives?

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Exchange 2010 - No Push notification when when deleting emails from Outlook

  Hi I'm setting up a Exchange 2010 server for our test environment. I'm running Windows 2008R2 enterprise on this machine. Iv'e also installed all updates available for windows and exchange 2010 including rollup 1 and 2 for exchange that include bugfixes regarding push notifications. My problem is when deleting mail or marking mail as read don't trigger a push notification. The happens when I use webgui, mobile phone and Outlook 2007. When deleting a email in Outlook 2007 the changes get sent to the server since the changes are visible in webgui but not on mobile phone. I get push notifications when I get new emails since new emails appear instantly on the mobile phone. Is this normal behaviour on Exchange 2010? For me it seems a bit funny. If i force sync on mobile phone the changes appear. Iv'e tested this on both iphone and HTC HD2(Running Windows Mobile 6.5) with same results.

• DrayTek Vigor 2920(n): VPN with VLAN restrictions?

  Hi, I'm currently installing a DrayTek Vigor 2920n router in a new office. This router is to be used for 2 seperate companies. For one of these companies, the router has a LAN-2-LAN (VPN) connection to a datacenter configured. The other company should not be able to access this other (VPN-)network. I'm aware of the capability of this router to have VLAN's, but I cannot figure out how to configure the VPN-connection to only be accessible for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. I know I can also add another router to physically split both networks, but we bought the DrayTek with the idea that it could easily have the VPN-connection available for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. VLAN1 can easily be in another subnet, that's fine, although, I don't know how to configure that on this DrayTek. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance, Dirk

• SuSE always logs a user in TVM session

  Hello all, I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM session. I have tried restarting the box but that has not helped. However, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me got on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for your help, Rohan

• ClearOS - how to avoid getting stuck at a fsck message at boot?

  I have had this happen a couple times - I have a ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 box, and due to a power outage or similar, it ends up showing an error at boot and saying that fsck needs to be run (I think it said with (or without?) the -a parameter). The problem is, I need this box to be headless, at a remote location (miles away)! SO, I need to come up with a solution on how to either have it automatically repair itself, without someone to be present with a monitor and keyboard. Another possibility is to simply avoid the issue all together - maybe there is something that can be changed so it's very unlikely to happen (I am unable to avoid the power outage of course - at least not practically). Finally, maybe it can be boot off a read only media (cd) or file system or similar? At least the base OS, so that it would always at least boot with enough configuration that might allow remote access, or basic connectivity?

• Adding entries to the context menu and organising them in Windows 7

  So I've got the hang of adding keys to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\Shell, and I know I can add a string entitled 'Position' and change its value to position the entry I've made, but I can't figure out how to do three things (nor can I find anything guiding me in doing them): 1) How to put a bar on either side of an entry to separate it from other entries 2) How to position them in an exact place in the context menu (eg. above or below a certain other entry) 3) How to make an entry that brings up another list of entries (like the 'View' and 'Sort by' entries that are already there when you right-click in Windows Explorer I wasn't sure whether this goes in StackOverflow or SuperUser, but I thought maybe it goes here since I'm using Regedit rather than coding it (though I am aware you can right a .reg file and then execute it to install these sorts of things). • Terse, documented, correct way to create Kerberos-backed user shares in Greyhole

  As a migration strategy away from Windows Home Server (which is currently out of support and intractable for our needs, for a variety of reasons), our little cloister of nerds has targeted Greyhole for our shared use at home. Despite the documentation's terseness, getting the system set up for simple, single-user operation isn't especially difficult, but this scenario fails to service our needs. Among other highlights of the system, we're attempting to emulate Integrated Windows Authentication (with Kerberos) and single-user shares to keep the Windows users in the house happy and well-supported. I'm aware of the underlying systems that go into Greyhole and understand how to set up per-user shares in Samba, but the documentation doesn't seem to support cases for Greyhole to sop up these directories as separate landing zones for replication. Enter my question: are both of these cases (IWA user authentication and user-partitioned personal shares) supported by Greyhole? If so, please cite or link the supporting documentation if it exists.

  We are using Deployment Rule Sets to limit access to the older JRE to well-known applications like - but are running into a problem. One business critical applications has the following properties (*s to protect info): title: Enterprise Services Repository location: null jar location: http://app.*.com:52400/rep/repository/*.jar jar version: null isArtifact: true The application downloads a .jnlp file, and uses java web start to execute. Since the location is null, this application cannot be targeted by a location rule. And the certificate hash method only works when the application is cached (being ran more than once). If cache storing is off, which is the case in some situations, how can this application be targeted? Or at least told to run with an older JRE on start? This problem is specifically noted in this bug Thanks!

• How to modify PATH variable for X11 during log-in?

Decided to revise my question, based on what I learned there: Essentially, my problem is that I am working on some lab computers (read: no administrative rights) that, if I log in, I need to change the PATH variable as X11 starts. The reason is that I need to change the PATH variable at this time, as opposed to later, is that the Print Screen command seems to "bind" during login (forgive my bad explanation of this).
