• DOMPDF generation error

  Hello, I have a big problem at my work. We had to make a page who displays a exercise for the users. But that page need also to be available as pdf. To do this we used DOMPDF. This worked perfectly on your development server but when we moved it to the production server dompdf generates pdf with errors. When i open the pdf i get the error from Adobe Reader: 110. The first server (development) was Debian. The production server runs CentOS 5. DOMPDF used PDFLib or CPDF, but both generate the same error. Does anybody know what kind of differents on the server i need to be aware of ?

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines.   Hello, I'm looking for the proper way to share the Coldfusion engine for all my Virtual Hosts. This is how I have the virtual hosts configured on server.xml in the Tomcat conf: <Host name="localhost" appBase="webapps" unpackWARs="false" autoDeploy="true" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> <Context path="" docBase="cfusion/" reloadable="true" privileged="true" antiResourceLocking="false" anitJARLocking="false" allowLinking="true"/> </Host> <Host name="mysite1" appBase="webapps" xmlValidation="false" xmlNamespaceAware="false"> <Context path="" docBase="/mnt/webroot/mysite1" /> </Host> This is not valid for me because I'm instantiating one Coldfusion process for every virtual host, and it requires me to copy the WEB-INF folder in every site. My question is, is there any way to share the same Coldfusion instance for every virtual host, mantaining the sites webroot outside of the cfusion folder? I'm using Apache Tomcat 6 and Coldfusion Enterprise edition 8. Many thanks.

• Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU?

  I am virtualization newbie. Please advise on these questions. Please note using a commercial VM software like Citrix or VMware is not a choice for me. I have at my disposal a couple of 2x 4 core servers with 32 GB RAM. I need to create 16 VMs on each server to test some web applications. Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU for each VM? To my best knowledge I can't do so on Xen. Is it possible on KVM or some other free open source VM solution? If it's not possible to assign half a core, how do I ensure that uniform processing power is available for all VMs? Since the job is to create separate instances for hosting 16 web apps in a physical server, do you recommend setting up a private cloud using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud as a better option? Is there HA solution under KVM, like Remus for Xen?

• Can't uninstall SBS 2003 in sbs 2003 -> sbs 2008 migration

  I'm trying to remove sbs from my sbs 2003 server. Also I'm logged in as Administrator. However When I start to go through the wizard it gives me the following error. You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins group. I then did some research and found this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842694) and I came to the point where it says to delete the server from Sites and Services. However when I clicked delete it wanted me to dcpromo the box first. However I have read you have to uninstall exchange first and then dcpromo it to remove AD. Any ideas?

• MySQL dump, output each table row on a new line whilst using --extended-insert

  I'm having an issue, where for ease of use, I'd like to be able to format a command line MySQL dump so that each row of a given table is on a new line when using the --extended-insert option. Usually when using --extended-insert, every row of a given table is outputted on one line, and as far as I am aware there's no way to change this, other than post-processing the dump with perl or such like. The format I'm looking for is: -- -- Dumping data for table `ww_tbCountry` -- INSERT INTO `ww_tbCountry` (`iCountryId_PK`, `vCountryName`, `vShortName`, `iSortFlag`, `fTax`, `vCountryCode`, `vSageTaxCode`) VALUES (22, 'Albania', 'AL', 1, 0.00, '8', 'T9'), (33, 'Austria', 'AT', 1, 15.00, '40', 'T9'), (40, 'Belarus', 'BY', 1, 0.00, '112', 'T9'), (41, 'Belgium', 'BE', 1, 15.00, '56', 'T9'), (51, 'Bulgaria', 'BG', 1, 15.00, '100', 'T9' However, when I dump a database using Phpmyadmin, using --extended-insert, each row is dumped on a new line (as shown by the example above). • How to get top command output to show rake arguments?

  In the past, all of our servers have automatically shown command arguments passed to rake when we view them in top. For example: But on this particular server, we get this instead (picture is top running, showing the rake command, but not showing any of the arguments that had been passed to rake): Both servers are running Ubuntu (though the server without rake commands is a newer flavor of ubuntu). Both run rake through ruby enterprise edition (as powered by rvm). Can't seem to find any documentation on how top chooses what to show in the "command" column, other than the obvious "more data/less data" toggle (all screenshots are shown with the extra data enabled. Anyone encountered anything similar to this?

I've created a windows7 vhd file with help of the following blog post hanselman blog After that, I've added it to my boot menu with help of another blog post hanselman blog This worked great. After that, i've upgraded my hdd. With help of clonezilla i've copied the old disk to the new disk. Next step was to copy the vhd to another partition. Then i updated the boot menu. However, the step C:\>bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=[driveletter:]\<directory>\<vhd filename> fails with the message An error has occurred setting the element data. The request is not supported. what is happening?

• How can I sort out Xephyr's keyboard mapping?

  When I start up Xephyr inside of X, my keyboard map becomes wonky mostly just for non-printing characters. I can't use arrow keys. According to xev, The down arrow gets mapped to Super_R. The up arrow is Print Screen. PgDown is mapped to "Menu". My keyboard works fine in the original X display (:0), but in the Xephyr subdisplay (:1), nothing else quite works right. I don't have any funky xmodmap things going on in my main X display that I'm aware of. All I really do is setxkbmap -option ctrl:swapcaps.

• Are there any vendors making a Gigabit Fiber solution for laptops?

  I'm trying to build a laptop system that can connect to just about any network you might come across in a large enterprise. I realize I can use a media converter to go from twisted pair to fiber but prefer to have a NIC instead of a converter. Is there a vendor out there that actually makes a gigabit ethernet fiber adapter for laptops? Edit: A year after I asked this question, apparently Allied Telesis came out with the AT-2872SX ExpressCard which has an SC connector for Gigabit Ethernet. See syneticon-dj's answer below.

• Windows 2003 SP1 terminal server printers Disappear after reboot - HP laserjet 4240

  had working PCL6 laserjet 4240 driver. needed to downgrade to PCl5, tried but did not get clean install. tried again and it seemed to work (this is 2003 enterprise terminal server SP2) Have over 40 working laserjets (5, 4000, 4100 and 18 of the 4240) After normal nightly reboot the 18 4240 printers were 'gone'. Worked w/Microsoft who said bad HP driver issues - weird since they work on other terminal servers. downloaded latest version, etc. from HP site and can NOT get to work. As soon as I install, then do a Net Stop Spool and Net Start Spooler the printer is 'gone'. Current workaround is to use HP 4000 PCL5 drivers for all of these 4240 printers.

• What happens to modern-ui apps when they aren't in the foreground?

  If I start a modern-ui app and then switch to a different app or a normal program running on the desktop, what happens to the first app? I've heard something about the first app being suspended, but realized that I don't really know that for certain. I mean, could you write a SETI@Home (BOINC) app if you wanted to, or will apps that aren't in the foreground always be suspended? Can you change that? I could see changing that based on available resources, running from AC vs. battery, etc. This morning I heard about an iPad being recovered thanks to the "Find my iPad" app, and was wondering whether you could write such a thing as a modern-ui app and have it work without being the running foreground app. (I'm aware that you'd just write a Windows service or similar, that's not what I'm asking about.)

• Getting Partial / No Redundancy on VM's created on latest datastore

  Hi, First some background. I'm in the process of upgrading my ESX servers from 3.5 to vSphere 4 and so far I have setup the new vCenter Server. Before I start the upgrade of the ESX, I needed more storage so I created 3 datastores from available space on my Equallogic PS6000 which has been connected for a while so as far as connectivity, nothing has changed. but now here's my problem, I get a "Partial / No Redundancy" on any VM that I create in any of these new datastores. I can create VM's on any of the older datstores on LUN's from exactly the same Equallogic and it works fine, but not the new ones. Keep in mind that these new datastores are the only ones that were created under the new vCenter, so I believe it must have something to do with it. Is anyone aware of any issues about creating datastored using the new vCenter but on a 3.5 ESX host? ISCSI with QLogic QLE406x Thanks in advance for nay help. Germano

• Booting large ISO through PXE

  I currently have a FOG server (which works perfectly fine) and I'm trying to boot Windows 7 through it (with memdisk). But, since the ISO is rather large (more than 6 GB) it will try to put the ISO into memory and then boot however it crashes with the error message not enough memory to load specified image. The systems here don't have 6 GB of RAM so I need another way to boot it. I am aware of WDS and SCCM, however I want todo this with FOG. Is there any way to boot the ISO and install Windows through FOG?

• Linux laptop encryption

  What are my options for encrypting the /home directories of my Ubuntu laptops? They are currently setup without any encryption and some have /home as a separate partition whilst others don't. Most of these laptops are single-user standalone laptops which are out on the road a lot. Is ecryptfs and the encrypted Private directory good enough or are there better, more secure, options? If somebody got hold of the laptop, how easy would it be for them to gain access to the encrypted files? Similar questions for encrypted lvm, truecrypt and any other solution I may not be aware of.

But when I try to enable the "Keep index online while rebuilding" option, the job does not execute successfully and throws out errors. I have attached the screenshots.   We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

• Convert png sequence to x264 with ffmpeg

  I am trying to convert a series of pngs into an mp4 video. I am using ffmpeg, and want to encode the video with the x264 codec. Using the command ffmpeg -y -r 30 -b 1800k -i _tmp%04d.png -vcodec libx264 out.mp4 I get the following warning message Incompatible pixel format 'bgra' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' My understanding is that there is an alpha channel in the pngs, which the x264 encoder cannot handle. Is there a way to get around this problem? Is there, for example, a way to get the encoder to ignore the alpha channel (my pngs don't actually have any transparent elements)? I'm aware that I could batch convert the pngs beforehand to strip the alpha channel, but the sequence of images is produced by another program, and having to preprocess the images each time I make a video would be less than optimal. Edit: After stripping the alpha channel from each frame using the command convert in.png -background white -flatten +matte out.png ffmpeg gives the warning message Incompatible pixel format 'pal8' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' so still no dice.

• How do I maximize and check my gigabit transfer rate?

  I'm trying to maximize my LAN transfer speed. LAN cards and switch are all gigabit on a CAT 6 cable. Modes are set correctly to 1000 full duplex. CentOS server Testing with ftp from both windows and fedora, I'm only having the speed around 11MB/s. On windows I notice that the first few seconds of file transfer I'm actually getting around 25MB/s before it drops to 11MB/s Can anyone please recommend me what my next step should be to increase this performance? Are there any utilities I can use to test the file transfer speed without taking hard drive speed into consideration? The only thing I know is the MTU which I will have to wait until the office hour is over before I can play with it. If there are anything else I should be aware of, please please let me know. • Why after deleting a 110+ GB collection, my /var/lib/mongodb directory still have same size?

  I am having some troubles with MongoDB and space usage. In particular, I once used to have a large collection of about 600 million records totaling 110+ GB on disk. Recently I decided to drop it because the data was outdated, to do so I dropped the collection through rockmongo's web interface. Accordingly, rockmongo doesn't show me the collection anymore, however my disk usage hasn't changed at all. Is there any clean operation which I am not aware of, which must be run in order to synchronize the database with database files on disk? I have tried to perform a "repair" but the system complains that there's not enough space on disk ... that's because it is all used by MongoDB.

• How to transfer files and settings from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 2008 R2?

  If I want to re-install Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit (or any other edition of Windows 7), I'd typically use "Windows Easy Transfer" utility built in the OS to backup and restore my files and settings. But in my case, I'm migrating to Windows Server 2008 R2. If I remember well -having worked on both Windows 2008/2008R2 before- "Windows Easy Transfer" is NOT installed on Windows server, and it doesn't even understand the format of the backup file it generates (".MIG" file). I can't remember for sure whether this is true, is it? And if it's true, what is the alternative for transferring the files and more importantly program settings to Windows 2008 R2? Of course I'm aware of the "manual" option and that automatic transfer sure will not transfer everything. Options??

• Apache Passenger can't find gem

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I've transferred over some sites built in Sinatra. I've set up Phusion passenger, but when I visit the sites I'm getting a Passenger LoadError claiming that passenger has 'no such file to load -- sinatra' yet when I run gem list or sudo gem list, I clearly see sinatra listed. Why can't passenger find this gem? I tested that on the server and it works fine. The problem is, I could not get remote SFTP access to the server to work right. The example above is what I keep on running into. I have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem for 2 days now. I am not sure if it have to do with /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Is it something that I am not aware of? I am hoping that you could help point me to the right place for this issue.

• SQL Server Snapshot Replication Subscriber (Editable or Read-Only)

  I need to create a copy of my SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise database and have it located on the same server as the original. I will be using this second copy of the database as the target of a mostly read-only website. I understand that if I create this copy of the database using snapshot replication that all data changes in the subscriber database will be overwriten in the event of the next replication. The web application will try to write to this database to record login attempts, etc and will fail if its source database is read-only. In my case I do not need to keep these auditing records and they can therefore be overwriten each time a new snapshot is applied. My question is whether SQL Server forces the subcriber database to be read-only and is there any way around this? Thank you, Nate
