• How Can I Restrict VSFTPD to a Particular Local Group?

  I'd like to control VSFTPD access by adding users to a group such that only members of the defined group can access the FTP services. I am thinking I can do this by modifying /etc/pam.d/vsftpd, but am not sure how to get started. Or is this only for virtual users in VSFTPD? I am aware of user_list and this does not seem to support groups. This doesn't provide the function I am looking for which is described above. If I am mistaken though this would be great. • XAMPP pointing a file outside root folder

• Printer monitoring script (PowerShell)

  I am going to write a script of some sort to check event viewer in a windows server 2003 for all printjobs, and then write them to a comma delimited textfile like printername_floor_room.txt I am wondering what the best way is to do this realtime, and keep checking the event viewer constantly. Any caveats I need to be aware of? Thanks EDIT: Okay, so I will most likely go for PowerShell and use Get-EventLog and then edit the "table" data. Problems I'm having: if I were to save all this data to a text file, how do I get the data out of it? A comma-separated file I could work with, but this, I'm not really sure. And once that is sorted out, I'm still not sure how to keep the file updated more or less real-time. Can I make this service-like, without hogging up all resources? Run it every x seconds for example?

• Advise about performance for local or remote SQL Server?

  I currently have my web server and SQL Express / MySQL server on the same server. It is on a VPS. I have been having problems with my hosting so I am thinking of separating the web and db server into 2 VPS servers. Does anyone recommend this? I am worried that changing my setup from a local DB server to a remote one will degrade performance heavily. They will not be on the same network, but will reference each other via an IP address. Anything I should be aware of?

• FortiGate firewall configuration with /30 and /28 networks

  I have fiber coming in from a new ISP which is being handed off via Ethernet on a single physical port. I'm having doubts about how to approach the configuration on my FortiGate 200A firewall because I've been given a /30 containing the ISP's gateway and another /28 for external IPs I can use: x.y.76.12/30 (.13 is the GW) x.y.76.64/28 (public IP space) How do I configure the FG200A's WAN1 interface to be aware of the two networks? As I only have one physical ISP port, will I need to plug it into a switch to break-out two cables and use a DMZ port on the FG200A for setting up the /28? Thanks in advance for your insight!

• Shrink Partition on Production Server

  SO our production server was only setup with one large partition. I have setup a standby server and properly partitioned it. Now the boss wants the production environment's partition shrunk. It is an HP DL380 G5 We have 4 hot swap drives in a raid 5. How best should I go about doing this. Seems like a bad idea to me. Should I use windows or HP to do the partitioning? What should I be aware of in a production environment? The idea is to put the site (Inetpub) on a separate partition instead of the C: drive. How much downtime should I expect? Is this a terrible idea? Anything else I have missed?

  Has anyone come across the use of this config for passwd and groups config in nsswitch.conf? Where I'm working I've been told it's been shown to help situations where a group exists both locally and in ldap which was causing issues for group memberships etc. However this config seems to totally mess up nscd which will be aware of the groups and all their members but will not flip the data around to say the user is a member of all it's remote groups. Initially it seems, given a fully available environment, to be exactly the same as [FOUND=return] which is an implict default between stages anyway. However apparently a lengthy ticket with Redhat resulted in the recommended use of that configuration.

• Apache, modifying response codes from 404 to 301

  Hi, I'm running a magento installation on an apache server. There are many pages indexed in both google and linked to from external sites. I can't use 301 redirects in a .htaccess file as I can't be sure I will catch all the links. At the moment all requests are rewritten through magento and if a request isn't found magento returns a 404 File not Found. Is there a way of using one of the apache modules to filter the response* from magento and if a 404 Not Found is being sent back then replace the response with a standard 301 Redirect to the home page? E.g. Request to Magento -- Apache -- Rewrite to Magento index.php page -- page processed. Response if request exists -- return results (200) if request doesn't exist -- return 404 -- apache filter change response -- return 301 redirect to / I appreciate any help. Thanks, Jon as far as I am aware mod_rewrite is only used to rewrite requests and doesn't allow the modification of responses.

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. (never used it anyway) GPO link GPO Security Filterings

• Which browsers support Window's Low Integrity level?

  Normally i like running ie, but it's rendering speed at high-dpi is poor. More recently i've switched to Chrome, but it does not support high-dpi displays. i'm interested in trying other browsers, but they must support protected mode. Are there any other browsers, besides IE and Chrome, that support Mandatory Integrity Levels (i.e. protected mode)? • Oracle 11g network configuration

  I installed Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition on my Windows 7 Pro. My problem is that I cannot log into database from other host (local network). When I connect to database using Oracle SQLdeveloper everything is ok as long as I specify 'localhost' in connection configuration. However, when I change it to '192.168.0.190' which is my host IP address I get 'The Network Adapter could not establish the connection'. I get the same error when logging in from other host in local network. What is the problem?

  We will be implementing a public-facing website in SharePoint 2010 and I have a few questions regarding licensing: Is there any (relatively) reliable pricing information available for SharePoint 2010? What about rumors? What edition of SharePoint 2010 would be appropriate for a publicly facing website (in 2007, you needed Enterprise for this, but it seems that WCM functionality is included in Standard in 2010)? What would be a reasonable number to budget for SharePoint 2010 licensing for a publicly facing website? Note: I have tried asking Microsoft directly. Unless you are a volume license customer, they direct you to a reseller (like CDW). Unfortunately, none of the resellers have the pricing for 2010 yet. The sku isn't even in their system. I was able to get in touch with the Microsoft Pre-Sales team and they confirmed that the price list will for 2010 will be published on May 3rd (or thereabouts), but they weren't able to give me a price. • Dismissing systray balloons with the keyboard?

  This is probably a supplementary question to how to access the systray using the keyboard... I've read that, and done some googling (google fu lacking, or there really is no answer), but I can't find a nice quick keyboard shortcut to dismiss those info balloons that apps in the system tray choose to display every now and then. The hints for access in the linked question can't be used to close the balloon (and least when I've tried them here). Now I know I can wait for a timeout and they'll go away but if I can just hit , that'd be fanstastic. So... anyone aware of a keyboard shortcut?

• Automatically download files in Internet Explorer without getting prompted to Save / Cancel?

  I am currently using IE7 with XP SP3. When a webpage download with unknown file type loads, I get a prompt asking me what I want to do with the file. My options are FIND SAVE CANCEL. How do I make it so that I don't get this popup prompt, but Internet explorer automatically downloads the file into a directory I choose without asking? PS. I have already tried Tools Internet Options Security Internet Custom Level Downloads Disable/Enable/Enable, but this doesn't help. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have to use IE. I'm using it in connection with other proprietary software based on IE and its settings. And yes I'm aware it's not a great browser. (This is not for strictly personal use in the browsing sense. )

• Converting a VMware player image from non-persistant to persistant

  I'm pondering setting up a virtual machine to generate app-v (since i got mdop from school) or thinapp application virtualisation packages. Ideally with either of these, i should work off a fresh system do the install, then copy out the packages produced. I'd like to not have to reinstall windows per package to get a fresh, unmodified stock copy of windows. I'm aware that its possible to make a hard disk image persistant in vmware player (one of my lecturers did it, but he's in another country). I'm wondering how would i convert a persistant image to a non persistant one? I'm currently running vmware player 4, with windows 7 guest and host.

  i was wondering whether we can use logstash or any other opn source or free Log management too to collect,index the data and then feed this index into RSA envision or any other enterprise SIEM tool. Will this be beneficial in any way? Also are the indexes of various Log Management and SIEM tools -- splunk,RSA envision,HP Arcsight Logger and Logstash etc compatiable with each other. My organization is planning to buy RSA envision appliance and is there any way to restrict or select only certian type of log files eg: security logs or apache logs .. so that onlt those are monitored and this will reduce the EPS(events per second).

• Not able to access other machines on network

  Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

• httpd.conf for case-insensitive file serving

  I'm a complete newbie with regard to managing Apache, so excuse me if I'm phrasing something incorrectly. I have a web site -- say, http://domain.com. The problem is that when I try to open http://domain.com/index.html in a web browser it displays the page, but when I attempt to access http://domain.com/Index.html (note capital I), it responds with HTTP 404. How do I configure Apache to serve both these files (and directories, for that matter) in a case-insensitive manner? Current httpd.conf is here. EDIT Dan C, thanks for a hint. I basically want to allow users to download files from my server and don't really want them to be aware that Index.html and index.html are in fact different. I'm also very willing to know as to what are the ramifications of this decision.

• How to add LDAP user to existing local group in RHEL?

  I'm attempting to add some of our LDAP users to a locally defined group on our RHEL server, however I get an error stating that the LDAP user is not found in /etc/passwd. What would be the best way to allow LDAP users to be added to local groups? My feeling is that this must be done manually. I could edit: /etc/group and add the LDAP group to the list. Would that be ideal? • Dell R910 with Integrated PERC H700 Adapter

  I am in the process of designing an architecture based around a single Dell R910 server running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. I would like the server to have 8 RAID1 pairs of spinning disks, so I intend to implement: Dell R910 Server Integrated PERC H700 Adapter with 1 SAS expander on each SAS connector (so 8 expanders in total) 7 RAID1 pairs of 143Gb 15K HDD, each paired on one connector using an expander 1 RAID1 pair of 600Gb 10K HDD, paired on the remaining connector using an expander My main concern is not to introduce bottlenecks in this architecture, and I have the following questions. Will the PERC H700 Adapter act as a bottleneck for disk access? Will using SAS expanders for each RAID1 pair cause a bottleneck or would this be as fast as pairing disks directly attached to the SAS connectors? Can I mix the disks, as long as the disks in each RAID1 pair are the same? I assume so. Can anyone recommend any single-to-double SAS Expanders that are known to function well with the H700?   I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

• Easily recreate a server's "state" [closed]

  I want the ability to setup new servers for dev/testing/prod very easily. The reasons for being able to setup a new dev VM is obvious, but for prod my concern is adding a new production server/migrating to a new server. I assume a traditional backup solution won't work as hardware may be different so the binaries/config might be different. I want to get experience with puppet anyways, so I was thinking about creating a manifest that would setup my users, install Postgres, Nginx, PHP-FPM, etc, and configure them the way I specify. Then I could install puppet on a new server, copy down my manifest and apply it locally. This would make keeping my server configs in sync easier too. Is there a better approach I'm not aware of, and does my approach have any pitfalls?

• Are there any security concerns when using Windows' default workgroup?

  Are there any security concerns one should be aware of if you're using Windows' default workgroup as the workgroup? (Or is worrying just tinfoiling?) Should it be commonplace to rename the workgroup to something personal/unique after Windows installation? Are there any other benefits in renaming the workgroup from the default besides making it to look more describing? Ie. is renaming worth the hassle as it makes the workgroup generally less accessible? It is used in local area network after all.

• Use the keyboard to activate the menu bar

  In OSX, is it possible to navigate the menu bar without using the mouse (such as the arrow keys)? I'm looking for something similar to how Windows does this – pressing Alt allows the arrow keys to navigate the menu bar, pressing Enter invokes the menu item. This is more ergonomic as my hands don't have to leave the keyboard to invoke menu items. I'm aware of the various keyboard shortcuts, but unfortunately not all menu items have them. Followup: I discovered Full Keyboard Access which solves half the problem. With Full Keyboard Access set to All Controls, is there a key that activates the menu bar?

  Hello On Linux it is possible to create an a manual IPSec (no IKE etc) tunnel thus: spdadd 192.168.0.10/32[5066] 192.168.0.11/32[5064] udp -P in ipsec esp/transport//require; add 192.168.0.10 192.168.0.11 esp 2222 -m transport -E des-ede3-cbc "123456789012123456789012" -A hmac-md5 "1234567890123456"; I need to do the same on Windows. I am aware of netsh but I don't think its equivalent, I need to specific the SPI (thats the 2222 above) and this seems impossible. Any ideas or alternatives?! Thanks, Stuart.
