• Which Programming Language Should I Learn?

  I've decided, for educational purposes, I want to learn a new language every 2 years or so. Which language should I learn first? Why? I'm proficient with C, C# and Java. Other than that, I really haven't done much with any other languages. Thanks! Edit: Thanks to all of those that recommended functional languages. Making the mental switch to a functional language seems hard. How did you overcome your instinct to keep doing things in a procedural manner?

• Working in consulting company

  I working for some numbers of years in an medium size ecomerce company where we developing and maintaining large distributed ecomerce system that is a core of company business. I thinking to switch job and one of the offers is in consulting company, the model of work there is different you suppose to work for couple of months at different clients of this company developing different project, this mode of working is very different for me and I don't sure if I will like it. From the positive side I will get experience in a lot of different projects in very different problem domains and with a lot of different technologies. From the negative side, I will always be an outsider in all this companies, placed in some far away corner I probably will have little emotional connection to projects I suppose to work on. Do you have some personal experience working in both of this types of companies that you could share ?

  I have just installed the lastest RC of VS2010, which for me represents a shift from VS2008. A new comment formatting feature that I was looking forward to appears to be missing. About 6 months ago I read a Scott Gu blog post that mentioned a new VS2010 feature that would format /// style method comment blocks into more readable formatted regions inline with other code. The Scott Gu blog did not provide a screen shot but I was expecting the VS2010 editor to remove the XML tags from the /// method comment block and render just the essential text comment. Was this feature pulled during the Beta, or is there an option switch urking somewhere?

  I need a way to define a FLAGS_IF macro (or equivalent) such that FLAGS_IF(expression) <block_of_code> FLAGS_ENDIF when compiling in debug (e.g. with a specific compiler switch) compiles to if (MyFunction(expression)) { <block_of_code> } whereas in release does not result in any instruction, just as it was like this #if 0 <block_of_code> #endif In my ignorance on the matter of c/c++ preprocessors i can't think of any naive way (since #define FLAGS_IF(x) #if 0 does not even compile) of doing this, can you help? I need a solution that: Does not get messed up if */ is present inside <block_of_code> Is sure to generate 0 instructions in release even inside inline functions at any depth (i guess this excludes if (false){<block_of_code>} right?) • In UISplitViewController rootView/masterView to tell detailView to push a viewcontroller ?

Now i have a splitview with a rootview / leftview that has a table and detailview / rightView that has some view controller pushed into it's navigationcontroller. So this is what i want to achieve: When i tap on a tablerow on my rootView , i want my detail view to push a viewController associated with that row... any ideas ? • user table with javaDB and Hibernate from within grails

  let's see if I can ask this in an understandable way... I started with grails and created a domain class called user. As far as I understand, Hibernate is used to map this domain class to the database. This works pretty fine with hsqldb. Now I tried to switch to javaDB and get an error message because the table is called "user" (which seems to be a reserved word for javaDB). So a statement like create table user ... will result in an error message. create table "user" ... works, but Hibernate seems not put put the table name in quotes. How can I configure Hibernate to use quotes in order to make it work with my table name? PS: yes, I know, I could map the domain class to another table name... :-)

  I'm extremely frustrated trying to switch to MVC after a couple years of webforms development. Here's my extremely simple problem that I can't manage to solve: I have a list of States in a table called StateProvince. I have a DropDownList. I want the DropDownList to display all of the States in the StateProvince table and post the selected state back on HTTP PUT. This is what I'm doing: <%: Html.DropDownListFor(model = model.StateProvinceId, new SelectList(Model.StateProvinces, "StateProvinceId", "Name") )% I'm getting an Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Why? How can I make this work? Keep it simple, I know nothing about MVC.

• Seeking to zoom in on an image, slowly, on page load, using Jquery

  Hello, I am looking to give the impression of zooming in from a large image to a detailed area of that image, over time, when the page loads - using javascript (jquery, preferably). I have been given the following flash site as a reference (action happens just after title fades in): http://www.delicatessennyc.com/ Not sure if this is even possible. I know I could switch out the large image for a smaller one - but my boss is hellbent of achieving this flash-type action using javascript. Please note, I've searched the plugins and I've not found anything like what I'm looking for. And I'm so new to this type of coding that cobbling it together from scratch seems daunting. • What is a good Visio Enterprise Architect replacement?

  I've been using Visio 2002/2003 Enterprise Architect to do my database schema design visually and then forward-generate the DDL to create the database. I wanted to switch to Visio 2007, but while it does have database diagramming support, it doesn't have the ability to generate DDL. Bummer. I am really disappointed because it seems like Microsoft has completely abandoned this feature. You can't do it in Visual Studio (that I've found). You can sorta do it with SQL Server Management Studio if you insert database diagrams into your database, but any edits to the schema immediately take effect. Has anyone found a good program to do this? I'm hoping to find one that is free and can generate DDL/SQL for SQL Server.

• UnitTest++ creates cmd windows, which can't be closed

  Hello, I have a setup for using UnitTest++ like this in VS2008. Sometimes the cmd window, which shows the console output of the unit tests just hangs. I can move the window, resize and stuff, but I'm unable to close it. I see the window in the App tab of the Task Manager, but not in the Process tab, "Switch to process" doesn't work either. Stop debugging or closing VS is also no help, it seems VS has lost control over this window. If this cmd window is lost, I'm unable to shutdown my computer, which is pretty annoying Any hints?

• Tables are not visible in SQL Server Management Studio but they are in Visual Studio using same acco

  I'm experiencing a weird problem with a particular SQL login. When I connect to the server in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (2008) using this account, I cannot see any of the tables, stored procedures etc. that this account should have access to. When I connect to the same server within Visual Studio (2008) with the same account everything is there. I've also had a co-worker connect to the server using the same login and he's able to view everything as well. The strange thing is if I switch logins, I'm able to view objects that the other account has access to which indicates that there isn't a problem with MSSMS on my PC. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can diagnose this problem? I've check to make sure I don't have any Table filters etc.

  I am trying to write a module that will change a user's permissions once a node form is inserted into the database. I already have a role assigned when a user registers, but i want that role to be changed once they create a 'company' profile in this case which is when they fill out a cck form of 'company_post' type.   I have read in few different places that using c++0x's new string literals it might be possible to compute a string's hash at compile time. However, no one seems to be ready to come out and say that it will be possible or how it would be done. Is this possible? What would the operator look like? I'm particularly interested use cases like this. void foo( const std::string& value ) { switch( std::hash(value) ) { case "one"_hash: one(); break; case "two"_hash: two(); break; /*many more cases*/ default: other(); break; } } Note: the compile time hash function doesn't have to look exactly as I've written it. I did my best to guess what the final solution would look like, but meta_hash<"string"_meta>::value could also be a viable solution.

Can anyone suggest how I do this? Or do I need to specify the types I want to allow somewhere and switch on the property's type to see if it's allowed? That's a little messy, so it'd be nice if I there was a tidier way.

  We have a .NET 2.0 application that uses the RijindaelManaged class to encrypt some sensitive data. This was fine until we ran into some machines that require the use of FIPS-compliant algorithms. We'd like to switch to AesCryptoServiceProvider, but most of our target machines haven't upgraded past .NET 2.0. Requiring an upgrade is out of the question. After all, upgrades are scary! Is there any way we could use AesCryptoServiceProvider in a .NET 2.0 application? Since 3.5 uses the 2.0 CLR, I was hoping there might be a way to build the needed libraries into the app. Failing that, could someone point me to a reference on the native API that's wrapped by AesCryptoServiceProvider?

• Extracting Text from between parentheses in PHP using preg_replace

  I am trying to take a string of text like so: $string = "This (1) is (2) my (3) example (4) text"; In every instance where there is a positive integer inside of parentheses, I'd like to replace that with simply the integer itself. The code I'm using now is: $result = preg_replace("((\d+))", "$0", $string); But I keep getting a "Delimiter must not be alphanumeric or backslash" error. Any thoughts? I know there are other questions on here that sort of answer the question, but my knowledge of regex is not enough to switch it over to this example.

• Why doesn't my CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject method get called?

  Hi I've been tinkering around with the two techniques to modify the ribbon with an MS Word addin (Visual Studio 2010, .NET 3.5), a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Ribbon.OfficeRibbon and Microsoft.Office.Core.IRibbonExtensibility. I was hoping to switch between the two in my addin's CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject, but for some reason it is not called now. The documentation says that if an addin implements CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject that it will be called. When I create a fresh project to test doing this very thing, it works. I'd prefer not to abandon my project as-is. Any ideas? Thank you.

  Hi, Say I have a list of Employee IDs from one data source and a separate data source with a list of Employees, with their ID, Surname, FirstName, etc. Is it possible in XAML only to get the Employee's name from the second data source and display it next to the ID, using something like this (with the syntax corrected)?.. <TextBlock x:Name="EmployeeID" Text="{Binding ID}"></TextBlock> <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" DataContext="{StaticResource EmployeeList[**where ID = {Binding ID}**]}" Text="{Binding Surname}"/> I'm thinking back to my days using XML and XSLT with XPath to achieve the kind of thing shown above. Is this kind of thing possible in XAML? Or do I need to 'denormalize' the data first in code, into one consolidated list? It seems like it should be possible to do this simple task using XAML only, but I can't quite get my head around how you would switch the DataContext correctly and what the syntax would be to achieve this. • does PHP 5.3 change the way file_get_contents works?

  I'm having an odd issue with PHP's file_get_contents. In the past, file_get_contents on a remote file returns the text of that file regardless of the HTTP status code returned. If I hit an API and it sends back JSON error information with a status of 500, file_get_contents gives me that JSON (with no indication that an error code was encountered). I've just set up a Ubuntu 10.04 server, which is the first Ubuntu to have PHP 5.3. Instead of giving me the JSON, PHP throws a warning when a 500 error is present. As a result, I can't parse the JSON and give a nice error message. It's nice that PHP is noticing there's an error in the remote file, but I need the JSON even (especially!) if there's a 500 error. There doesn't appear to be any way to switch this off. Has anyone encountered this? Any tips?
