• How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Why does TDD work?

  Test-driven development (TDD) is big these days. I often see it recommended as a solution for a wide range of problems here in Programmers SE and other venues. I wonder why it works. From an engineering point of view, it puzzles me for two reasons: The "write test + refactor till pass" approach looks incredibly anti-engineering. If civil engineers used that approach for bridge construction, or car designers for their cars, for example, they would be reshaping their bridges or cars at very high cost, and the result would be a patched-up mess with no well thought-out architecture. The "refactor till pass" guideline is often taken as a mandate to forget architectural design and do whatever is necessary to comply with the test; in other words, the test, rather than the user, sets the requirement. In this situation, how can we guarantee good "ilities" in the outcomes, i.e. a final result that is not only correct but also extensible, robust, easy to use, reliable, safe, secure, etc.? This is what architecture usually does. Testing cannot guarantee that a system works; it can only show that it doesn't. In other words, testing may show you that a system contains defects if it fails a test, but a system that passes all tests is not safer than a system that fails them. Test coverage, test quality and other factors are crucial here. The false safe feelings that an "all green" outcomes produces to many people has been reported in civil and aerospace industries as extremely dangerous, because it may be interepreted as "the system is fine", when it really means "the system is as good as our testing strategy". Often, the testing strategy is not checked. Or, who tests the tests? I would like to see answers containing reasons why TDD in software engineering is a good practice, and why the issues that I have explained above are not relevant (or not relevant enough) in the case of software. • Windows XP problems displaying internet browser backgrounds correctly

  My friend has a Windows XP computer that doesn't show the colored background on pages, it's always white. On top of that some pictures won't show up, there will just be an empty white frame. Also when you left click on a folder, instead of opening it up, it opens up a new window that turns out to be the search results window. I've never heard of these problems before, and I can't find any information on the internet about it. I assume it's a virus deeply imbedded into the system, but no virus scanner has found it. • Using SSH to find access to a problematic script in logs of multiple domains

  I run several (~20) sites on a Dreamhost VPS. Lately I max my memory allocation for the VPS and I want to find the problem. I would like to have an SSH script that will scan all the log files of all the domains and show me what object (image, php script etc) gets lots of calls. It will count the calls in each /logs/*/http/access.log, do an descending sort and show me the top 10 across domains. But I don't know how to do that. Can it be done? • Game works on netbeans but not outside netbeans in jar file?

  I am creating a basic game of 'Pong'. I have finished the game apart from a few glitches I need to remove. The game runs perfectly in netbeans but if I create a jar file errors come up causing it to not work. I am quite new to java but I believe it is something to do with my code looking for the images but the images have not been loaded up yet. Here is the error. How can I get this to work outside of netbeans in a jar file? • After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)

• Oracle SQL Developer: Fetching SQL Statement Result Sets

  Running queries, browsing tables – you are often faced with many thousands, if not millions, of rows. Most people are happy with looking at the first few rows. But occasionally you need to see more. SQL Developer doesn’t show you all records, all at once. Instead, it brings the records down in ‘chunks,’ or as-needed. How It Works There is a preference that tells SQL Developer how many records to get in a single request, or ‘fetch’ of records. The default is 50… So if I run a query that returns MORE than 50 rows: There’s more than 50 records in this resultset, but we have 50 in the grid to start with. We don’t know how many records are in this result set actually. To show the record count here, we actually go physically query the database with a row count type query. All we know is that the query has finished executing, and that there are rows available to go fetch. It tells us when it’s done. As you scroll through the grid, if you get to record 50 and scroll more, we’ll get 50 more records. Or, you can cheat to get to the ‘bottom’ of the result set. You can ask SQL Developer to just to get all the records at once… Once all the records have been fetched, you’ll see this: All rows fetched! A word of caution There’s a reason we have the default set to 50 and not 1000. Bringing back data can get expensive and heavy. We’ve found the best performance to be found in that 50 to 200 record range.

  While coding for Windows Phone 7 using Silverlight, I was really disappointed with the built-in MessageBox class, so I found an alternative. My disappointment was the fact that: Display of the messagebox causes the phone to vibrate (!) Display of the messagebox causes the phone to make an annoying sound. You can only have "ok" and "cancel" buttons (no other button captions). I was using the messagebox something like this: // Produces unwanted sound and vibration. // ...plus no customization of button captions. if (MessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", MessageBoxButton.OKCancel) == MessageBoxResult.OK) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } …and wanted to make minimal changes throughout my code to change it to this: // no sound or vibration // ...plus bonus of customizing button captions if (MyMessageBox.Show("my message", "my caption", "ok, got it", "that sucks") == MyMessageBoxResult.Button1) { // Do something Debug.WriteLine("OK"); } It turns out there is a much more powerful class in the XNA framework that delivered on my requirements (and offers even more features that I didn't need like choice of sounds and not blocking the caller): Guide.BeginShowMessageBox. You can use it simply by adding an assembly reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.GamerServices. • Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. • Linux to Solaris @ Morgan Stanley

  I came across this blog entry and the accompanying presentation by Robert Milkoski about his experience switching from Linux to Oracle Solaris 11 for a distributed OpenAFS file serving environment at Morgan Stanley. If you are an IT manager, the presentation will show you: Running Solaris with a support contract can cost less than running Linux (even without a support contract) because of technical advantages of Solaris. IT departments can benefit from hiring computer scientists into Systems Programmer or similar roles.  Their computer science background should be nurtured so that they can continue to deliver value (savings and opportunity) to the business as technology advances. If you are a sysadmin, developer, or somewhere in between, the presentation will show you: A presentation that explains your technical analysis can be very influential. Learning and using the non-default options of an OS can make all the difference as to whether one OS is better suited than another.  For example, see the graphs on slides 3 - 5.  The ZFS default is to not use compression. When trying to convince those that hold the purse strings that your technical direction should be taken, the financial impact can be the part that closes the deal.  See slides 6, 9, and 10.  Sometimes reducing rack space requirements can be the biggest impact because it may stave off or completely eliminate the need for facilities growth. DTrace can be used to shine light on performance problems that may be suspected but not diagnosed.  It is quite likely that these problems have existed in OpenAFS for a decade or more.  DTrace made diagnosis possible. DTrace can be used to create performance analysis tools without modifying the source of software that is under analysis.  See slides 29 - 32. Microstate accounting, visible in the prstat output on slide 37 can be used to quickly draw focus to problem areas that affect CPU saturation.  Note that prstat without -m gives a time-decayed moving average that is not nearly as useful. Instruction level probes (slides 33 - 34) are a super-easy way to identify which part of a function is hot.

• Problems with vim/locale as non-root user on Solaris

  I do some work on a Solaris 10 machine, and my .vimrc is set up to show unicode characters for tabs and line endings: set listchars=tab:?\ ,eol:¬ This works out of the box on my OS X machine. On Linux as well as Solaris I get the following error when I start vim: Error detected while processing /home/lhanson/.vimrc: line 17: E474: Invalid argument: listchars=tab:?~V?\ ,eol:¬ I solved this on my Linux box by setting LANG=en_US.utf8 ('locale -a' shows this as being an option). On Solaris, however, 'locale -a' shows the following: C POSIX iso_8859_1 Setting LANG to C or POSIX yields the same error, and even though iso_8859_1 probably wouldn't work it doesn't successfully change the locale anyway. As a non-root user, is there any way I can have my unicode characters show up?

• SteelSeries & JavaFX External Control via Tinkerforge

  The first photo shows me controling a JavaFX chart by rotating a Tinkerforge device, while the other two are of me using code by Christian Pohl from Nordhorn, Germany, to show components from Gerrit Grunwald's SteelSeries library being externally controled by Tinkerforge devices: What these examples show is that you can have a robot (i.e., an external device), of some kind, that can produce output that can be visualized via JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. For example, imagine a robot that moves around while collecting data on the current temperature throughout a building. That's possible because a temperature device is part of Tinkerforge, just like the rotating device and distance device shown in the photos above. The temperature data collected by the robot would be displayed in various ways on a computer via, for example, JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. From there, reports could be produced and adjustments could be made to the robot while it continues moving around collecting temperature data. The fact that Tinkerforge has Wifi support makes a scenario such as described here completely possible to implement. And all of this can be programmed in Java, without very much work, since the Java bindings for Tinkerforge are simple to use, such as shown in yesterday's blog entry.

• OS X "service" for running JavaScript bookmarklets from anywhere?

  I have some JavaScript bookmarklets that work on the selected text in a web page, but I'd like to be able to use them on the selected text in any Mac OS X app, not just browsers or things that provide browser-like views. Mac OS X has the "Services" (sub)menu where any app can publish services that it can provide to other apps, but I don't know how to make my bookmarklets show up as services there. Is there a way to make JavaScript bookmarklets show up as Mac OS X "Services", or otherwise execute JavaScript against the selected text in any Mac OS X app?

• SkyDrive doesn't sync in Windows 8.1

  After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro to 8.1, I moved many files to the integrated SkyDrive directory. Everything worked just fine, until recently, where SkyDrive has simply refused to sync. The only exceptions are Office documents, which are synced via another mechanism. When I add files to the SkyDrive redirectory, they show up as Pending in the metro app indefinitely. When I try to make them online only I get the following error: Sorry, the action couldn't be completed because the file hasn't finished uploading. Try again later. Of course, the files do not show up online. When I go the other way, and try to upload files online, they are also not synced to my local SkyDrive directory.

  I am working on a freelance job at home. The client wants me to write some new functionality for his CMS, but it is taking me a lot of time to figure out what the code is doing, because it is written in a very unreadable style. Below is just an example of what I mean. The previous programmer made extensive use of anonymous functions, of eval(), he uses deeply nested ternary operators, he didn't indent code, didn't use comments, and he uses funny constructions like misusing the behaviour of logical operators || and && for creating if/else conditions (the second condition of && only gets tested if the first one is true, opening the possibility to use && as an if/else construction). • UNIX install quota in ubuntu ?

  I am new to UNIX and can't figure out how to use the 'quota' command to see my disk usages. So I install “quota” using the following command sudo apt-get install quota But when I type in the command quota -v or anything similar, it doesn’t show anything. According to most website online (http://acs.ucsd.edu/students/quota.shtml#check-remove) , it suppose to show me all the quota limitation when I type in quota -v. can you please tell me how can I make it work or if I am doing something wrong here. your help is greatly appreciated. • How do I access site.project.rails (running on host) from VMWare fusion?

  I have a rails app setup and running on my snow leopard MacBook - the app is being served by Passenger. As part of the setup they had me add entries for 127.0.0.1 site.project.rails in my hosts file so I could reach the site from site.project.rails I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the app show up in VMWare. I have XP setup and browse to http://site.project.rails and I can't get it to show up. I setup a basic rails app, being served at localhost:3000 by webrick, I can get that to load by visiting my hosts ip (http://192.168.1.1:3000/). I added the same hosts I added on my Mac to Windows. I also Bridged the network under settings for the VM. What am I missing?

Since I am also having an NFSv3 file system, I explictly gave user ids when creating them (for simplicity, I keep the same user id on the home server, running Debian; the user names contain digits; I'm not using LDAP), e.g. # grep bethy /etc/passwd bethy46:x:501:501:Bethy XXX,,,06123456:/home/bethy:/bin/bash # grep bethy /etc/group bethy64:x:501: # grep bethy /etc/shadow bethy46:$6$vQ-wmuchmorethings-2o/:15479:0:99999:7:: Of course /home/bethy exists The actual user name is slightly different, and I am not showing the real entries (for obvious privacy reasons) However, these users don't appear at graphical login prompt (lightdm). And they exist in the system, they have entries in /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow and I (partly) restored their /home I've got no specific user config under /etc/lightdm ; file /etc/lightdm/users.conf mentions # NOTE: If you have AccountsService installed on your system, then LightDM # will use this instead and these settings will be ignored but I have no idea of how to deal with AccountsService thru the command line As you probably guessed, I really dislike doing administrative tasks thru a graphical interface; I much prefer the command line What did I do wrong? How can a user entry not appear in lightdm graphical login? (I need to have my wife's user entry apparent for graphical login). I am not asking how to hide a user, but how to show it in lightdm graphical prompt work-around As I have been told in comments by Nirmik and by Enzotib, lightdm probably don't show any users of uid less than 1024. So I changed all the uid to be more than 8200 (including on the Debian NFS server) and this made all the users visible at the graphical prompt. It is a pain that such a threshold is not really documented.

• DVDs and CDs not recognized

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed on my computer (Sony Vaio VGN-NS205N). It reads some CDs and DVDs just fine, but many others it will not recognize at all, or will only recognize after opening and closing the CD tray many times. It just shows the cd/dvd drive as being empty and won't show that anything is on there at all. I have a few DVDs (from the same publisher) that work every time. This comes up most often when trying to show my kid Bob the Builder, etc. Some data CDs I would like to work with also have the same issue. It's not a hardware or defective disc problem, since all these will play in Windows on the same machine. It's just really annoying to have to switch operating systems to play videos or get data off discs. All the searches I have done people recommend installing medibuntu and other repositories. I have and they are all up to date. No change. Any help that works would be greatly appreciated.
