• How to automate IE/Firefox to download some files from a https: website with Javascript links?

  Some of my users download several pdf files from an internet website regularly. They'd like to automate the process to save a few minutes every day, and most importantly, to minimize errors. I tried mechanize but failed as mechanize does not process javascripts. Since the download links in the remote site are all triggered by javescript, I am looking for solutions to automate the browser itself. Any recommendations? https remote server login and search are FORM POST file download link are JavaScripts on win32 IE or Firefox thanks!

• How to access a file in local system using javascript?

  I'm using JQuery mobile frame work. I'm having a server which host a website. The user can connect to website through mobile browser and download files(.doc, .xls, .pdf etc) from that website. I need to open the file which is saved in the user's mobile programmatically using java script. I tried to open using location.href="file://sdcard/download/test.doc". But it didn't work. It showed permission denied. Is there any way to this? Please help. Thanks in advance.

• Documents/Images display fine in Simulator, but not on my device

  Hello. My application is running fine on the simulator, but not on the device. Basically, any documents from the web (PDF, Word, M4P videos) are working great on the simulator (and can be accessed from Safari on the iPhone). However, running on the iPhone, they don't display anything. • php memory how much is too much

  I'm currently re-writing my site using my own framework (it's very simple and does exactly what I need, i've no need for something like Zend or Cake PHP). I've done alot of work in making sure everything is cached properly, caching pages in files so avoid sql queries and generally limiting the number of sql queries. Overall it looks like it's very speedy. The average time taken for the front page (taken over 100 times) is 0.046152 microseconds. But one thing i'm not sure about is whether i've done enough to reduce php memory usage. The only time i've ever encountered problems with it is when uploading large files. Using memory_get_peak_usage(TRUE), which I THINK returns the highest amount of memory used whilst the script has been running, the average (taken over 100 times) is 1572864 bytes. Is that good? I realise you don't know what it is i'm doing (it's rather simple, get the 10 latest articles, the comment count for each, get the user controls, popular tags in the sidebar etc). But would you be at all worried with a script using that sort of memory getting hit 50,000 times a day? Or once every second at peak times? I realise that this is a very open ended question. Hopefully you can understand that it's a bit of a stab in the dark and i'm really just looking for some re-assurance that it's not going to die horribly come re-launch day.

For example, the Miscellaneous Mathematical Symbols-A block has an entry in hash like this: my %symbols = ( ... miscellaneous_mathematical_symbols_a => [(0x27C0..0x27CA), 0x27CC, (0x27D0..0x27EF)], ... ) The simpler, 'continuous' array miscellaneous_mathematical_symbols_a => [0x27C0..0x27EF] doesn't work because Unicode blocks have holes in them. For example, there's nothing at 0x27CB. Take a look at the code chart [PDF]. Writing these arrays by hand is tedious, error-prone and a bit fun. And I get the feeling that someone has already tackled this in Perl!

• Framework or CMS for php web development?

  Hi all, I am a C++,Unix developer who has never dabbled in web development apart from creating simple HTML pages. I am going to change that and develop a website at a personal level soon. I am going to use php,mysql on a linux machine. In this regard I am browsing through relevant literature. The language isn't a problem but reading about CMS's and frameworks is confusing. And since I am new to web development, the number of CMS's and Frameworks are overwhelming. ? My question is do I need to have knowledge of one or more CMS' and/or Frameworks like Drupal,Joomla,Zend,Wordpress etc. If yes which is the best open source CMS' and/or Framework suggested for a newbie. ?? If the answer to the above question is yes, does the choice changes if one delves into the realms of commercial web development? • When is a program limited by the memory bandwidth?

  I want to know if a program that I am using and which requires a lot of memory is limited by the memory bandwidth. When do you expect this to happen? Did it ever happen to you in a real life scenario? How can I measure the memory bandwidth that a given program is using and how do I measure the (peak) bandwidth that my system can offer? I don't want to discuss any complicated cache issues here. I'm only interested in the communication between the CPU and the memory.

  Hi Everyone, I have started learning Objective C with no prior programming experience from the 'Become an X-Coder' eBook (http://download.cocoalab.com.s3.amazonaws.com/BecomeAnXcoder.pdf). My question is, if I want to be doing iPhone development, am I going in the right direction? Am I learning the wrong language, or should I be learning Cocoa Touch? • Creating a CD auto-start dialog

  For me, compact discs and these customized auto-start dialogs are somewhat outdated and waste... However, I have to create such a dialog as an index for a CD consisting of a few PDF files. Making one to work on Microsoft Windows is quite easy. As there might be users from different platforms (Unix, Apple,...), the question raises how to offer them such a (auto-starting) dialog as well. Java is of course an option, but I think it's overloaded and naturally too slow for this purpose. Now, I think of a single webpage that will appear in the local browser. Using all these web standards this could a very creative, light-weight approach working on most systems. Do you see any problems that might occur here? Probably, there is a different and more elegant solution to this issue?

• Javascript for removing menu and scroll bars

  Hi - I have this script on my html page: parent.resizeTo(550,510); I'd like to add to it so it positions the window in the middle of the screen. Also, I want to remove the address and tool bars (I've managed to hide the scrollbars by using body{overflow:hidden;}). I know how to do this using JS upon opening a new window from the browser but this needs to work from clicking a link on a PDF. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

• How do programs handle file "opened with..." them?

  I am wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. You know how for example, in most IDEs, if you open a source file with "open with", it runs the program and opens it up? and then if you open another one, it opens it in a new tab in the same process? My question is NOT how to add a program to the shell commands, but rather: How would a C# application "receive" a PDF file for example? How would the application open the file in the same process when another file is run with it (not having to instances of the program)?

• PHP: gethostbyname() suddenly no longer resolves names to IPs when run in Apache

  One of our older legacy servers which gets no further updates or reconfigurations suddenly stopped resolving hostnames to IPs when PHP is executed within Apache. However, it still works fine when executed from the CLI. From the RSS caches last modification time, I deduce that it stopped working on around Mar, 28th. To reproduce the problem, I created a script using fsockopen() and it said "connection failed (errno 2)". I further reduced the problem to being related with a failed name resolution: <?php $addr = gethostbyname("twitter.com"); echo "ADDR($addr)"; ?> When I run this through Apache, the output is ADDR(twitter.com), which is wrong. When I run this from the CLI, the output is ADDR(aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd) with varying IP addresses, as expected. Nothing on the server setup has changed. CLI and Apache module share the same php.ini. PHP is version v4.4.9 with Zend Optimizer v2.5.10. Apache is v1.3.31. I know the versions are old. But since nothing has been changed, a solution like "try to upgrade versions first" is no solution as the server's feature set/versioning is frozen and will be replaced soon. Still we need a solution. If I run dig through the script, it works in both environments (mod_php and CLI) but this is more than an ugly hack as it would involve many edits and testing throughout the whole script base which is also undesired as the PHP application on the server is frozen, too, and only receives security updates. It will be replaced by a complete rewrite (on the new server). But as the rewrite will take some time and successive replace parts of the legacy application, we need a fix for the resolver problem. I already googled a bit and while the problem is known, many did not find a fix. The fix to raise memory limits did not work. Restarts did not work. The resolver in mod_php just did stop working for no apparent reason. :-(

• Lighttpd not cleanly restarting (address already in use)

  When doing a dist-upgrade recently, my lighttpd-1.4.19 install on Ubuntu 8.0.4 has begun failing to restart or reload properly with the /etc/init.d/lighttpd restart command. ~$ sudo /etc/init.d/lighttpd restart * Stopping web server lighttpd ...done. * Starting web server lighttpd 2009-06-13 04:06:36: (network.c.300) can't bind to port: 80 Address already in use ...fail! The same error occurs when I do a reload. The way I get around it is to kill lighttpd and then issue the start command, but it seems like I shouldn't have to do that :) I've looked at my config files, and can't spot any immediate errors. Does anyone have any ideas what can be causing this error? This seems to be the latest version as of writing this question that is available via the apt-get route. • After compiling PHP, I get mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server

  I'm trying to add multiple PHP version in Plesk 12. Switching my domain to the new version PHP 5.4.29 result in this error: (104)Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server Here is phpinfo() of the complied PHP version, obtained running php54-cgi index.php from the terminal. The same script placed under document root doesn't work in FastCGI. How can I debug/try to figure out what's the error? Currently running CentOS 6.5 x64, Plesk v12.0.18_build1200140529.2, PHP 5.5.13. • Optimize php-fpm and varnish for a powerfull server

  My setup is: Intel® Core™ i7-2600 and RAM 16 GB DDR3 RAM varnish+nginx+php-fpm+apc for a not very heavy WordPress blog with W3 Total Cache and CDN My problem is that after 55 hits per second according to blitz.io varnish starts giving out timeouts. CPU usage at this time is hardly 1%. Free memory at all time remains 10GB+. I tried benchmarking php-fpm directly with result of 150hits/s without any timeouts. But after that the CPU usage goes 100% and it stops responding. Can you help me optimize it to handle more?   I am troubleshooting the setup of Varnish 3.x on my Ubuntu server. I'm running Drupal 7 on two sites set up on the box, via named-based vhosts. Before trying to get Varnish to play nice with Drupal I'm trying to just get Varnish to a PNG from cache. • How do you backup 40+ Centos5.5 servers?

  We are embarrassed to ask this question. Apologies for our lack of UNIX expertise. We have inherited 40+ centos 5.5 servers, and don't know how to back them up. We need low level clone type images so that we could restore the servers from scratch if we had to replace the HDs etc. We have used the "dd" command, but we assume this only works if you want to back up one local disk to another, not 40 servers to one server with an external USB HD attached. All 40 servers have a pair of mirrored disks (dont know if its HW or SW raid). Most only have 100MB used. SErvers are running apache, zend, tomcat, mysql etc. Ideally we dont want to have to shut them down to backup (but could). We assume that standard unix commands like tar, cpio, rsync, scp etc. are of no use as they only copy files, not partitions, all attributes, groups etc. i.e. do not produce a result which can simply be re-imaged to a new HD to get the serer back from dead. We have a large SAN, a spare windows box and spare unix boxes, but these are only visible to one layer in the network. We have an unused Dell DL2000 monster tape unit, but no sw or documentation for it. WE have a copy of symantec backup exec, but we have no budget for unix client licenses. (The company has negative amounts of money). We need to be able to initiate the backup remotely, as we can only access the servers in person in an emergency (i.e. to restore) Googling returns some applications to do this, e.g. clonezilla - looks difficult to install and invasive. Mondo, only seems to support backup if you are local to the machine. Amanda might be an option, but looks like days/weeks of work to learn and setup? Is there anything built into Centos, or do we have to go the route of installing, learning and configuring a set of backup softwares? Any ideas? This must be a pretty standard problem which goggling doesnt give an obvious answer.

Ditto allows you to save any type of information that can be put on the clipboard, text, images, html, custom formats, ..... Free Evernote Remember everything from notes to photos. It will synch between computers/devices. Free InfoRapid Inforapid is a search tool that will display all you search results in a html like browser. If you click on a word in that browser, it will start another search to the word you clicked on. Handy if you want to trackback something to it's true origin. The word you looked for will be highlighted in red. Clicking on the red word will open the containing file in a text based viewer. Clicking on any word in the opened document will start another search on that word.   SQL Server management Studio 2008 is wonderful tool and has many different features. Many times, an average user does not use them as they are not aware about these features. Today, we will learn one such feature. SSMS comes with many inbuilt performance and activity reports, but we do not use it to the full potential. Let us see how we can access these standard reports. Connect to SQL Server Node >> Right Click on it >> Go to Reports >> Click on Standard Reports >> Pick Any Report. Click to Enlarge You can see there are many reports, which an average users needs right away, are available there. Let me list all the reports available.
