• Ubuntu 12.10 "Turn screen off when inactive for: Never" still turns off

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10, my screen still goes off after about ten minutes. I've been to the Brightness and Lock control panel. The Turn screen off when inactive for: setting is set for Never. I've been through the dconf Editor searching for power, screen, and idle changing parameters. This doesn't seem to have any effect on the display timeout. Here's one more interesting thing, the screen doesn't go off, per se. It just goes black. Meaning, the back lighting is still on, and all the pixels are black. When it goes black, it does a very pleasant quick dim to black. Similarly, it quickly un-dim's after a key press, mouse movement, or mouse click. So, I'm feeling this is more of a software setting the timeout, not a power saving function.

• Problem with network after malware attack

  Im trying to help some friends with a Win XP machine. I got rid of the malware using Malware Bytes, and HiJackThis. But now they(I) have another problem. When the computer boot into Windows it seems fine. When I start Internet Explorer the browser window opens just fine, but nothing happens for at minute or two. After the two minutes of waiting, the network icon appears in the taskbar next to the clock, and then everything works. The computer is connected to the internet using a Ethernet adapter. I have looked at the Rvent Log and found an error from Perfnet with eventid 2004 <Provider Name="PerfNet" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">2004</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> What I have tried so far: In the device manager i have uninstalled the Ethernet adapter and installed it again. I have uninstalled and installed the Windows File and Printer Sharing service. I have verified that both server and workstation services are started. What should I do next?

• How to access remote network resource from local machine

  I just configured VPN access successfully so that I now can connect to my workstation at work from my personal Linux box at home. The problem is that all of my dev files for a server I'm locally running are on my personal box and cannot be transfered to my workstation (at least not in any timely manner over this connection given the amount of data, in addition to the many reconfigurations which would be required for the server to run even if I could somehow get the files across). So essentially, I am able to run my server locally on my personal computer, however, the data-sources required for the back-end are accessible only from within the office's network. But is there some way for me to somehow either access the data-sources directly through a VPN connection or even if I need to be a bit more convoluted by connecting via VPN to my workstation and then somehow connecting to the data-sources through my workstation to my personal computer? And here I could really care less about the speed of the connection from my server to the data-sources since they will probably only be fetched a few times every hour or so. Thanks! Sorry if this a stupid question and/or doesn't make any sense! (And sorry for anyone who read this at stackoverflow, I posted it in the wrong area.)

• Where can I hire local programmers with very specific skillsets?

  I have been browsing the site and haven't found a exact fit to this question so I'll post it but if its already answered(since I'm sure its a common problem, then let me know). I have a business and want to create a totally different product in a different industry than I'm currently in, so I learned how to program and created a working prototype. I have a bit of savings and am getting some cash flow from my current business so I can go out and hire a developer(in the future hopefully it can be permenant but right now I just need a person willing to work on contract and code on weekends or their spare time and I just want to pay in cash instead of equity or future promises). At first I wasn't sure what kind of developer to hire but this question helped me understand I should target specific skills I need as opposed to general programmers. This poses a problem for me since general programmers are everywhere but if I want specific skills I'm unsure how to get them. I thought about a list of approaches but it doesn't feel complete or effective since it seems to be assuming good developers are actively looking. If it helps I want someone local(since this is my first developer hire) and looking for skills like cuda, hadoop, hbase, java and c. Any suggestions? As a FYI, I have been thinking of approaching it as: Go to meet ups for one or more skills I need. Use LinkedIn to find people with the skills I need Search for job postings that contain skills I need and then use linkedIn to reach out to that firms employees since many profiles on linkedin are not very updated or detailed but job postings generally are. Send postings to universities and maybe find a student who loves technology so much they learned these tools on their own. Post on job board. Not sure how successful it will be to post to monster. Use Craigslist, not sure if a highly skilled developer would go here for work. What am I missing? I could be wrong but it seems like good/smart/able developers aren't hunting for work non-stop(especially in this tech job market). Plus most successful people I know have work/life balance so I'm not sure if the best ones really care about code after work. Lastly, most of the skills I need aren't used in big corporations so not sure how aggressively smart developers at small shops look for work. I don’t really know any developers personally, so but should I be using the above plan or if they live balanced lives should I be looking outside of the regular resources(and instead focus on asking around my gym or my accountant or something)? Sorry, I'm making huge assumptions here, I guess because developers are a total mystery to me. I kind of wish Jane Goodall wrote a book on understanding developers social behaviour better :-p

• Upgrade issues due to broken "dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic" error

  okay, I've recently upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and I've been having some issues. I don't know if its a bug or not, but I thought I would submit it here. Okay here's a little background; I ran the distro update from the update manager and got a couple errors that I didn't catch. the computer restarted, and when I logged the Launcher and my top bar of the Ubuntu desktop didn't load. While it was trying to load a couple error messages came up, I think they were called "apport", saying they couldn't send the bug information for some reason. I believe it said somethings wrong with my internet connection, but nothing's wrong with it. I studied the RFC 826 on ARP. I personally feel that is not enough at all. Any suggestion regarding this? Is there more then 1 RFC for a protocol? I want to study about the protocols in very detail. • What's the best version control/QA workflow for a legacy system?

  I am struggling to find a good balance with our development and testing process. We use Git right now, and I am convinced that ReinH's Git Workflow For Agile Teams is not just great for capital-A Agile, but for pretty much any team on DVCS. That's what I've tried to implement but it's just not catching. We have a large legacy system with a complex environment, hundreds of outstanding and undiscovered defects, and no real good way to set up a test environment with realistic data. It's also hard to release updates without disrupting users. Most of all, it's hard to do thorough QA with this process... and we need thorough testing with this legacy system. I feel like we can't really pull off anything as slick as the Git workflow outlined in the link. What's the way to do it?

  As December 31, 2012 quickly approaches, so does the deadline to extend the Bush Era Tax Cuts which were extended under the Budget Control Act of 2011.  PeopleSoft realizes that there may be some customer anxiety over the delayed withholding tables.   My laptop has an ethernet connection, and there's another on the docking station. Can I connect using both at the same time? Will they have different MAC addresses? I'm assuming the ethernet port on the doc is just a passthru to the onboard ethernet - is that incorrect?

• Installing both lxml 3.1.2 and lxml2 on ubuntu 12.04

So here it is again, reformulated. On the lxml site they suggest that it is possible to have both lxml2 and the newest version of lxml on ubuntu: Using lxml with python-libxml2 If you want to use lxml together with the official libxml2 Python bindings (maybe because one of your dependencies uses it), you must build lxml statically. Otherwise, the two packages will interfere in places where the libxml2 library requires global configuration, which can have any kind of effect from disappearing functionality to crashes in either of the two. To get a static build, either pass the --static-deps option to the setup.py script, or run pip with the STATIC_DEPS or STATICBUILD environment variable set to true, i.e. STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml The STATICBUILD environment variable is handled equivalently to the STATIC_DEPS variable, but is used by some other extension packages, too. I am generally confused about how pip packages and ubuntu packages get along, so I hesitate to run STATIC_DEPS=true pip install lxml. Will it damage/confuse my installed lxml2 package? The suggestion on SO was to install the new lxml in a virtualenv. That looks like the best way to go, but the lxml site is suggesting that a dual installation will work also. In general: what happens if I use pip (to get a newer install) for a package that is already installed by apt-get?

• How reliable is the battery data in ubuntu the power statistics?

  Right now the power statistics show that: Energy when full: 25.5 Wh Energy (design): 93.2 Wh And indeed the battery doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it used too. My question: Is this data reliable? Does it really indicate that I should replace the battery, or could it be the charger, laptop, or OS that is stopping the battery from fully charging? Is any way of validating the battery is indeed to blame? I'd like to be sure before shelling out 90$ for a new battery. (If it helps, the battery is a 3 year old dell 9 cell rated at 90 Wh).

  I got a simple cloud server and thought it would be nice to have mac native afp Volumes accesss. Installed Netatalk and this seems to work pretty nice. No sensitive data or something but I don't like to wake up someday and have my www docs rm-rfed by some kid h4x0r. Q1: Is afp encrypted? Q2: How can I make it (semi)secure? Q3: Does VPN makes sense for this? Q4: What would you do to get afp working over net? Opening any service meant for Lan only is a basic flaw, i know - but me be ignorant about it. According to Apple Dev only the authentication is encrypted or am I mssing something?

  I want to use Frescobaldi (an editor for Lilypond), but the packaged release of lilypond (2.12.3; lilypond is like TeX for scoresheets) in the official repos is a bit old, since I want to use some brand-new features. So I just cloned their git repo and installed it from there. Now my question is, how can I tell apt, that I satisfied the dependency on lilypond manually, so that it doesn't tries to install another copy?

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. • Is there a way to install Ubuntu stripped down without desktop applications?

  Just to start off, I know of lubuntu but it really doesn't meet what I am looking for. Basically what I am looking for is the standard Desktop Ubuntu install, but with out all the word processing, multimedia, and games installed. I have seen posts out about how to get the desktop environment running on Ubuntu server, but they seem complicated, and never seem to equal the standard Desktop install. So my question is, is there anyway to tell the standard Desktop install not to install all the applications? Or is there a distro available that leaves all the applications out, and just has the standard desktop look and feel? What I really want this for is, is for development purposes to run on a VM to do Mono development.

Is there a built-in Web Interface for managing Shares, or a free one available - for use in Server 2003 (or 2008)? The reason I ask is that it would be good to manage the Shares via the Web, rather then RDP onto the Server each time - and would allow other users to treat it as a NAS.

  How to search for packages that provides a virtual package? For example, I want to search for packages that provides "x-terminal-emulator" in the "main" repository of Ubuntu 12.04. One way to do this is to parse the package index: curl http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz | zcat | grep -B12 '^Provides: x-terminal-emulator' | grep ^Package: which gives me the following results: Package: gnome-terminal Package: konsole Package: xterm Is that a better way to do this? Can it be done with any of the official tools (apt-get/apt-cache/etc)?

• Getting all available packages to install

  I need to see all the packages that are available to install via a command so I can use it in another program. I tried dpkg -l but it only gives the installed packages. The output is like this: ii apache2-utils 2.2.22-1ubuntu1 utility programs for webservers It is so similar to Synaptic output, so is there a common command like this am I missing? apt-cache is helpful but not it is not in the above format.

• Temp files created in every folder in Windows Server 2003

  So we have some folders which are shared over the AD Domain (Windows Server 2003). It was just noticed that in 2 of those folders (which contain only Excel and Word files), whenever a file is opened and closed, the temp file which was opened corresponding to that file still remains. Apparently, this's been going on for the past couple of years (which has led to an insane amount of temp files in each folder/subfolder under those shared folders). These shared folders are under the D:drive and not C: drive. There is only one group (containing 2 users) who access the said folders. I cannot understand if this has to do with the settings/permissions for the User/Group/Individual Client machine. For now, I have manually deleted all the temp files from each folder/subfolder. While this is not critical at the moment, I'd still like to clear this up. Also, it takes an additional fraction of a second to open folders that contains more than 10,000 temp files. • What is your strategy for converting RC builds into retail?

  We're trying to implement a strategy for how we transition our builds from RC to released retail code. When we label a build as a release candidate, we send it to QA for regression. If they approve it, that RC then becomes our released retail code. I liked the idea of "obvious" labeling of versions so that a user knows whether they have a beta or an RC or retail code... where you would have some obvious watermark in non-retail code (think Windows 7 where the RC or non-genuine builds watermark in the bottom right). ... but it seemed strange to us to manipulate the project (to remove the watermark) once it passed regression. If QA certified version a.b.c.d then our retail code should be that same version, not a.b.c.d+1 what strategies have you employed to clearly label non-release software versions without incrementing your build to disable the watermarks in your retail code? One idea I've considered is writing your build to look for a signed file in the installer archive... non-release code wouldn't include this file and so the app would know to display a watermark. But even this seems like QA is then working with non-release code. Ideas?

• Software development process for a part time University project for 1 developer?

  I will be doing a part time University project soon and the time frame for it is around 8 months with approximately 10-15 hours a week spent working on it, with a review by a tutor each quarter. My question is what software development process would you recommend using when the course requires you to work on your own in order to manage yourself as well as the project? I wanted to use a weekly or bi-weekly iterative approach to my work but a lot of the processes seem tailored to teams of people. I am looking at XP (Extreme Programming) OR Scrum as something that is less than the norm for University work but again Scrum I don't know a lot about yet, and a question I have is; can you say you are doing XP without pair-programming? because my tutor seems to think that I have to stick to all the practices otherwise I can't do it (nevermind if I am working alone). We can have external user input as well but due to the small timescales with part time work it may be more beneficial for myself to be the user as well, which is not what I prefer considering how I can get lost in the design.
