  • Bacula alternative?

    We currently run Bacula for our network but it seems really overly-complicated for what its doing. Is there a good alternative to Bacula out there that anyone could recommend that runs on Linux and handles both Linux and Windows clients? Or is Bacula pretty much the best solution atm?

  • Forefront 2010 Antispam vs Exchange 2010 Antispam?

    They look pretty similar, do they work together or independently? For example you have content filtering in Forefront where you can specify SCL barriers, just like in Exchange. However theres no where to specify the Spam mailbox. So will the spam mailbox still be used if I configure this in Forefront?

  • MacBook hangs when restarting to Vista through BootCamp

    I have Vista Pro installed on my Macbook and while it mostly works well, sometimes when I select Windows from the boot screen after turning the thing on, the screen just goes black and it all stops. If I hold the power button until it powers down and repeat, it works. It's not getting as far as Windows at all, I think, because if Windows was previously shut down to Hibernate, it still restores fine... and I'm pretty sure if Windows' startup had hung and been force-rebooted my session would be borked?

  • Why does Ubuntu feel so sluggish on my asus 1000HE netbook

    I recently purchased a nice asus 1000HE, and installed Ubuntu NBR. However, I'm pretty disappointed with how sluggish it feels. I'm wondering if I maybe need to install a closed-source graphics driver - it feels similar to how my work laptop performed before I installed the restricted nvidia driver on that machine.   • Automating the choice between JPEG and PNG with a script

    Choosing the right format to save your images in is crucial for preserving image quality and reducing artifacts. Different formats follow different compression methods and come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. JPG, for instance is suited for real life photographs that are rich in color gradients. The lossless PNG, on the other hand, is far superior when it comes to schematic figures: Picking the right format can be a chore when working with a large number of files. That's why I would love to find a way to automate it. A little bit of background on my particular use case: I am working on a number of handouts for a series of lectures at my unversity. The handouts are rich in figures, which I have to extract from PDF-formatted slides. Extracting these images gives me lossless PNGs, which are needlessly large at times. Converting these particular files to JPEG can reduce their size to up to less than 20% of their original file size, while maintaining the same quality. This is important as working with hundreds of large images in word processors is pretty crash-prone. Batch converting all extracted PNGs to JPEGs is not an option I am willing to follow, as many if not most images are better suited to be formatted as PNGs. Converting these would result in insignificant size reductions and sometimes even increases in filesize - that's at least what my test runs showed. What we can take from this is that file size after compression can serve as an indicator on what format is suited best for a particular image. It's not a particularly accurate predictor, but works well enough. So why not use it in form of a script: I included inotifywait because I would prefer for the script be executed automatically as soon as I drag an extracted image into a folder. This is a simpler version of the script that I've been using for the last couple of weeks: #!/bin/bash inotifywait -m --format "%w%f" --exclude '.jpg' -r -e create -e moved_to --fromfile '/home/MHC/.scripts/Workflow/Conversion/include_inotifywait' | while read file; do mogrify -format jpg -quality 92 "$file" done The advanced version of the script would have to be able to handle spaces in file names and directory names preserve the original file names flatten PNG images if an alpha value is set compare the file size between the temporary converted image and its original determine if the difference is greater than a given precentage act accordingly The actual conversion could be done with imagemagick tools: convert -quality 92 -flatten -background white file.png file.jpg Unfortunately, my bash skills aren't even close to advanced enough to convert the scheme above into an actual script, but I am sure many of you can. My reputation points on here are pretty low, but I will gladly award the most helpful answer with the highest bounty I can set.   • Novell eDirectory—How can I aggregate account lockout events?

    I'm seeing an account become locked out pretty frequently and I wanted to pull an aggregated log together of all of the lockout events so I could get a better idea of what times it's occurring. Normally I'd do this with EventCombMT.exe, but I'm in a Novell environment at the moment. Is there a Novell equivalent to Microsoft's ALTools or another diagnostic utility I could use to help aggregate lockout events into an easy to read log file?

  • OpenDNS IP Conflict

    I have downloaded the OpenDNS client and it was working great till today. Shows me this error: dynamic IP update failed with message !yours or "Your IP address is taken by another user." I am pretty sure i'll get away with the problem by just restarting my connection as i'll be assigned a new dynamic ip. But I wonder how this is happening in the first place. Shouldn't Dynamic IP be unique for everyone?

  • How to a2ensite and a2dissite?

    I'm logged into a Linux server. I think it's a Red Hat distribution. The commands a2ensite and a2dissite are not available. In the /etc/httpd directory, I don't see any mention of sites-enabled or sites-available. I'm pretty sure the site is currently executing the directives of /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf . I would like to do a a2dissite ssl, then reload the Web Server. How to do achieve this ?

  • Ubuntu web server 11.10 ftp/server issue

    I was wondering if I could get some help with FTP, atleast I'm pretty sure it has to do with FTP. Although it could have to do with something else, I'm not 100% sure.. Now, for fare warning, I'm no ubuntu dominator, I'm pretty newb. Anyway, I've attempted to build a webserver to to test php and what not for a site I'm building. Now everything works, the php, the sql etc. By the way, I built this in VMware, so it's virtual, over a network, so I can access stuff from anywhere. I'm in a college right now so yeah. The one problem I have is this. I go into the terminal, and do ifconfig to find my IP. I get it and go to a browser on a different machine and type that IP in. I get the "index of/" page, where I can browse the website I'm making. I can click through folders and what not. I can click on things and they open up. Now lets say I'm working on my desktop and open up an FTP and drag and drop something into there, go to the IP in the browser again and try to open it. I either get "Server error The website encountered an error while retrieving http://my_server_ip/phpinfo.php. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly. Here are some suggestions: Reload this webpage later." or "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /html.html on this server." But, lets say I make it on the server itself, and try, bam, magic it works. I'm sure I set the permissions to let everyone open and view the files, but maybe I didn't? I'm not sure, and this is where I was hoping I could get some help. By the way, I followed a tutorial on changing the www folder (apache) from /var/www to home/"user"/www. I can't recall how I did that, but it's there and my ftp goes to the home/"user"/www folder. But yeah, any and all help is appreciated. Like I said, I'm really new to this, but I do enjoy attempting to make these servers and learning how they work, so it's not like making this webserver is a project for a class, It's just assisting me in testing stuff for another class and possibly other websites later on down the road. Anyway, anyone who decides to help, thanks so much, I'd really appreciate it. Nate. P.S. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 desktop edition with a LAMP server

  • Kinesis Advantage OS X media keys

    I recently started using a Kinesis Advantage with my MacBook and one of the things I've really missed since switching from my Apple keyboard is having the functionality of the OS X media keys. I know the Advantage keyboards are pretty customisable but having Googled for quite a while I haven't been able to find any sources saying that it's possible to map the function keys on the Advantage to the appropriate OS X function. Has anyone had any success in getting something like this to work? Any tips would be hugely appreciated.

    So far all sites have played nice but recently i ran into a site which aggressively tries to get users to sign up and pretty much puts the site on lockdown after 10 pageviews without signing up. What firefox extension can i use to either freeze or disable cookies for this one specific site? I dont want to whitelist every site i visit because one site is giving me trouble.

  • Problem with hp laser jet 1018

    Hi! I'm using WinXP SP3 and HP LJ 1018. When I send 80 pages to pring as double side (directly or via FinePrint) only about 10 pages (at one side) are printed, I don't get any pages more and "Continue" button in double-side print dialog is disabled. Is it possible to fix it? Thanks!

  • Is there a reason to use library backups if I'm backup up full disks?

    In Windows Backup I can backup libraries or whole drives (or specific folders). I want a complete backup of all relevant drives. After selecting the drives, there's still the option to backup libraries: Is the backup going to do anything different if I include libraries as well as drives? Should I just backup the whole drive instead? Space used by the backup shouldn't be an issue, since I know the incremental backup is pretty smart..

    I'm looking to create a graph somewhat similar to this: But instead of graphing requests, graph responses, with a line for each HTTP response code (200 OK, 404 Not Found, 500 Server Error, etc). Creating the graph isn't the issue (use RRDtool, Server Density or something similar), but how can I best retrieve this information from Nginx? Unfortunately, this data isn't available on the page generated by NginxHttpStubStatusModule. If it was, this would be pretty easy.

Basically the developer said he wants example.com to be cached, while: http://example.com/electronics/ would not be cached. Note the developer is using pretty URLs with an MVC framework that runs everything through index.php.

  • OS X stealth mode: where is it enacted?

    I am working through the security guide from apple (which they did not update since Snow Leopard). In the firewall section it states that ipfw has a default allow rule: 65535 allow ip from any to any And if you enable the firewalls 'stealth mode' via the settings the following rule should be added: 33300 deny icmp from any to me in icmptypes 8 The funny thing is: I have stealth enabled and I do not see this rule when doing sudo ipfw print Any idea where stealth mode is enforced if not in the ipfw ruleset?
