• CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

  We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story... • monitoring a /21 for potential bad guys with snort and port mirroring

  Hi all, I want/need to start monitoring our network a bit better. Its an odd network in that it comprises 2 /22 public IPs and a slew of private admin IPs. I do have one point in the network where it all comes together and I can turn on port mirroring on the catalyst. From that port, I'd like to turn up a box running various utilities. Snort is high on my list but it'd be nice to also get some networking statistics with something like Netflow. So, what are peoeple's thoughts. I can turn up a box needed for this with a bit of ease. We have the hardware available. What should I run? I'd love to know what kind of nasty things are potentially going on but I'd also like to see statistics on what people are doing on the network so I can better tweak our systems to handle it better and improve performance. I'm open so please, give me some ideas to go along with what I've got.

• EEE PC Keyboard malfunctioning - Ctrl key "sticks" after 10 seconds

  I was given a EEE PC belonging to a friend of a friend to fix. The keyboard did not appear to work at all. I spent a while testing out various things, blowing the keyboard out, checking for damage, and so on. Nothing appeared to be physically wrong. At first I noticed that the keyboard appeared to work just fine for 10 seconds (on average, sometimes more sometimes less) after being powered on. It had been restored to the factory default xandros installation with no user set up, so I couldn't get in to mess with things since I couldn't type to make a user. I made an ubuntu live USB to boot it from, and managed to get the boot order changed to boot from USB in the ~10 seconds of working keyboard I had (I don't think I've ever had to rush around BIOS menus that quickly). After I got Ubuntu up on it, I played around a bit more and determined that apparently the ctrl key is stuck down (not literally, but it's on all the time). If I open gedit, pressing the "o" key brings the open dialog, "s" opens the save dialog, and all other behaviour you would expect to see if you were holding down the control key. The only exception that I noticed is the "9" and "0" keys. They function normally. Figuring that out I made a xandros user with a name/password consisting of 9's and 0's. I couldn't find any options in Xandros that could potentially be helpful. I'm not familiar with EEE PCs. Is it safe to assume that the keyboard is simply dead or could there be another problem? I don't want to purchase another keyboard for him if that isn't going to fix the problem. The netbook doesn't show any obvious signs of damage but the owner is a biker and very often has it with him on the road so it's been subjected to a good bit of vibration.

• Smart card / auditable access for rack KVM tray

  Is there such a thing as a KVM Tray for a standard 19" rack whose use can be validated by a smartcard (or some other auditable authentication method)? It looks like we have a security requirement where just because users have a key to the rack doesn't mean they will be allowed to use the console inside the rack, and rather than just lock the console (and keep track of who has keys), we would prefer to be able to audit the actual user that was attached at the KVM. (It's worth mentioning that I'm aware of the Raritan devices, but they surely can't be the only ones) (If these things existed, I don't think half of the tratoirs that somehow manage to infiltrate CTU on the TV show 24 would ever get away with anything)

• How can I install Satchmo?

  I am trying to install Satchmo 0.9 on an Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit guest off of the instructions at http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/downloads/Satchmo.pdf. I run into difficulties at 2.1.2: pip install -r http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/raw/tip/scripts/requirements.txt pip install -e hg+http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/@v0.9#egg=satchmo The first command fails because a compile error for how it's trying to build PIL. So I ran an "aptitude install python-imaging", locally copy the first line's requirements.text, and remove the line that's unsuccessfully trying to build PIL. The first line completes without reported error, as does the second. The next step tells me to change directory to the /path/to/new/store, and run: python clonesatchmo.py A little bit of trouble here; I am told that clonesatchmo.py will be in /bin by now, and it isn't there, but I put some Satchmo stuff under /usr/local, create a symlink in /bin, and run: python /bin/clonesatchmo.py This gives: jonathan@ubuntu:~/store$ python /bin/clonesatchmo.py Creating the Satchmo Application Traceback (most recent call last): File "/bin/clonesatchmo.py", line 108, in <module> create_satchmo_site(opts.site_name) File "/bin/clonesatchmo.py", line 47, in create_satchmo_site import satchmo_skeleton ImportError: No module named satchmo_skeleton A find after apparently checking out the repository reveals that there is no file with a name like satchmo*skeleton* on my system. • Recovering with DDRescue Cannot Complete (write error: Read-only file system)

  I'm trying to recover a corrupt VDI using vdfuse to mount the VDI and using dd_rescue to rescue the borked partition. dd_rescue seems to be working fine but once it reached about half of the partition, it just STOPs and gives the following error: ddrescue: write error: Read-only file system Wait.. what? It suddenly turns the FS it is writing the recovered partition to into a read-only file system. Well... why? Will I never be able to finish this? What's going on?

• Eclipse grinds to a halt when building workspace

  Hi all, This is a bit of a vague question because, frankly, I don't even know where to begin diagnosing the issue. My eclipse (Galileo) installation grinds to a complete halt when it's building the workspace -- to the point where I can't even type. I know the Android SDK I have installed is a major culprit because I can watch the memory usage go through the roof (through the built-in heap monitor) when the Android SDK content loader starts up. Every time I save a file though, the program just stops. The message at the bottom of the screen says Building workspace (74%) and sits there for about 30 or so seconds before completing and returning the performance to normal. I have a few other plugins installed (Maven, SVN, etc) but I'm assuming the main issue is Android. Has anybody had similar issues or any luck correcting this sort of problem? If there's anymore information you think would be helpful, just let me know...I didn't want to do a core dump on this question... I'm running it on Windows 7 64-bit for what it's worth. Thanks!   I've spent several days trying to deploy Satchmo, in the process asking several questions about deployment (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11277407/can-anyone-explain-this-error-message-deploying-a-satchmo-project-under-gunicorn, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11277685/is-there-a-howto-to-fcgi-for-deploying-satchmo, and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11278295/what-is-the-most-stable-release-of-satchmo). Django's tagline is "The web framework for perfectionists with deadlines," and Satchmo's tagline is equally forceful: "The webshop for perfectionists with deadlines." I'm looking more to set up, configure, design, etc., rather than code for this one, and I'm taking a bit of a hint that for me at least the "with deadlines" bit is something that I cannot manage. Deployment has been a time sink. So, taking a step back, I don't specifically need to edit and extend the source code; what I want are first, good usability and a clean experience for the end-user, then being easy to deploy/install/manage/maintain, and enough so that even if you're having a slow day it should at most be one day's work to install, one day's work to get running, and one day's work to rebrand as white label (for simple branding). What ecommerce webshops should I be looking at?

• Belkin Flip KVM keyboard skip problems

  I have just bought a Belkin Flip 2 port KVM. Functionally it is almost there except I have a keyboard sticking problem. So if I type the word 'Hello' it will often (about 25% of the time) output 'Hellooooooooooooooooooooo'. If I plug the keyboard directly into the USB on the computer I don't have this problem, only when plugged into the KVM. I feel like it is a USB speed problem. Followup It appears I have the same problem with the mouse, it will jump from one side of the screen to the other as I move it. The mouse is annoying but half as much as the keyboard.

• ClearType setting ignored in Windows Virtual PC with Windows XP Pro

  I have a VM set up through Windows Virtual PC for Windows XP Pro and I have been completely unable to get ClearType to work. I have turned it on in the Display - Appearance - Effects dialog but it seems like it completely ignores this. All text is still without any anti-aliasing. Even setting it to normal smoothing doesn't work. If I disable Integration Features, it seems to work, but then I lose a lot of nice features. What's weirder, is that the Windows XP Mode installed with Windows Virtual PC (this is separate from my XP Pro VM) works with both ClearType and Integration Features just fine. I turned it on the same way and it works like a charm, no problems. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit as the host OS and have the latest (to my knowledge) Windows Virtual PC installed. The only funny business I can think of is that I've enabled 24-bit color via the Group Policy setting inside each XP virtual machine (both Pro and the stripped down XP mode copy). This is a fairly well-known trick documented all over the web, but here's a typical post about it.

• Data Protection Manager System Protection Backups Failing

  I'm just starting to setup DPM 2010 in a test environment with a Domain Controller and a File Server. Everything seem to be working fairly well and I can get all of my backup jobs to succeed except for the "Computer\System Protection" backups. Both servers are running fully up to date 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Service Pack 1. The error that is being provided is: DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code: 0x8078001D). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FB) This Microsoft Knowledge Base article describes the issue perfectly and provides a hotfix. I downloaded the hotfix, moved it onto the affected server, attempt to run it and receive the following error: The update is not applicable to your computer. I've verified that I have indeed downloaded the 64 bit version. According to this thread the hotfix got rolled into Service Pack 1, yet I'm still experiencing the issue. Both machines do have the Windows Server Backup feature installed. Can anybody point me in the right direction? What am I missing?

  Hi, I need to merge several MP3 tracks into one, I use Mac OS X 10.5. I want to convert all my Harry Potter CDs to my iPod, but not every minute a new track (as it is on the CDs) but chapterwise. Where can I get a free software? Help, please! (I've already tried: Jfuse, but after I had merged a few chapters it said I had to buy it; emicsoft VOB Converter for Mac; File Stitcher; but since they all were shareware, for free they would only let me merge 2 files at once (that would take me days) or half of each file which is useless of course; iTunes advanced settings ("join CD tracks") when importing the CDs, but it would let me only join the complete CD, not chapters...) • Win 7 Privilege Level (Run as administrator) via GP or command line

  Is there a way to set the Privilege Level for legacy software via group policy or on the command line? I have some legacy software, which we unfortunately cannot move away from. This software requires administrator access. I know I can go into the Properties dialog and check "Run this program as an administrator" on every single instance on every single one of my workstations, but that gets old after the 30th install. If I had my way, we would dump this software, find some software that did what we needed, was fully compliant with Win7 security best-practices and give everyone limited user accounts... However, I am not the boss, so everyone gets administrator accounts. Given that, I suppose I could just tell everyone to open the context menu and choose "Run as administrator", but we have some very, very, VERY low-tech users, and half of them might just choose "Delete" instead. Anyone know of a way to set this option on the command line? or better yet, through Group Policy?

  Because I have to stare at my command prompt all the time on my computer, it should look at least half-decent, so I am trying to get it colored. The expected outcome is as seen on this site. I have the colors I want set in my .Xdefaults file, but they of course do not color my prompt. My .zshrc is Phil's Prompt. • AutoCAD 11 and network file shares

  Small network of perhaps half a dozen engineers, currently working on local copies of AutoCAD project files, which are then copied back up to file server (2008 Standard, 1-2 year old Dell server hardware, RAID 5 SAS disks (10k? not positive)) at end of day. To me, this sounds horribly inefficient and error-prone, however, I've been told that "AutoCAD and network files = bad idea" and this is gospel. The network is currently 10/100 (perhaps this is the reason for the "gospel") but all the workstations are within 2 years old and have GbE NICs so an upgrade of the core switch is long overdue. However, I know certain applications don't like network access, at all, and any sign of latency or disruption brings the whole thing crashing down. Anyone care to chime in?

  It has been a few days so far that I am trying to figure how to solve this problem. First of all, I am running a website with an average daily page view of 350,000. Previously, all ads management (tracking click and impression that each ads has served) and content were served in a single server with the following spec: Server 1 OS: Windows 2008 R2 64-Bit CPU: Intel® Core™ i5 - 4 cores RAM: 8 GB Storage: 2 x 1 TB hard drives Bandwidth: 10 TB per month To improve our website speed, I decided to separate the ads management script to another dedicated server because we have more than 15 advertisers to 30 advertisers per each page. Server 2 OS: Windows 2008 R2 64-Bit CPU: Intel® Core™ i5 - 4 cores RAM: 4 GB Storage: 2 x 300 GB hard drives Bandwidth: 10 TB per month The Problem The problem is that Server 1 can handle both content and ads system. Now, that I take away the ads system and put it at Server 2. Server 2 can barely serve only ads system. Test First of all, I moved 75% of the ads to Server 2. And then, perform a ping to server: ping -t xxxxx. • AMIs in Amazon EC2

  I really like the Amazon EC2 environment, and thought I'll spend a bit of time playing around with various types of public (Windows!) AMI servers. But testing has been a bit, well, questionable. Some of my findings: It's very difficult to know what exactly a specific public EC2 image is supposed to be doing. Many images come with little to no information. I can't seem to find the passwords to log onto various windows images. Why are they public if they can't be used!? Lots of images are based on S3, and not EBS backed. This is very annoying, as S3 takes a lot longer to do pretty much anything (stop, image etc.) I am only testing images here, so of-course I don't question the value of S3 for other attributes. The description of what an image does is almost useless and many times confusing. Have others come across these EC2 issues. Again, my interest was to just play around with public images for testing/experimentation/etc, and therefore these issues may not be too relevant for more normal EC2 deployment uses.

• Apache+PHP on Windows Server 2008

  I've installed Apache/2.2 and PHP/5.3 lots of times under Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003. The official *.msi installers work fine and configure everything. Now I need to install them into a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit box and I'm facing nothing but problems: There are no official 64 bit binaries for Apache and no binaries at all for PHP (official or third-party). It's alright, I'll do with good 32 bits, but it's kind of surprising. Official documentation is vague, generic and completely unaware of UAC or any recent Windows security feature. The PHP installer is unable to configure mod_php and the Apache installer is unable to configure... well, Apache. After three hours I've finally reached the point where I'm installing everything in the root folder and assigning full control access to all users in all files and directories and all I've got is a PHP-less Apache server that's able to serve static pages. So I guess it's time to stop and think. My question is: Has anyone installed an Apache+PHP production server under Windows Server 2008 in a serious, secure and reliable way and documented the whole process? Or should I just find a bundle like XAMPP and the like that requires no installation? === EDIT === I've installed Xampp Lite 1.7.3 and everything was working in 5 minutes. I'd still like to find some documentation about installing the original packages: XAMPP installs tons of stuff I don't need and offers no tool to enable and disable PHP extensions.

• Is there a way to allow continuous scrolling in Adobe Reader?

  I am having to read through a MASSIVE (1000+ page) PDF specification in Adobe Reader X (version 10). It has always bugged me that if you scroll to the edge of a page, the Reader automatically jumps to the top of the next page. Is there away to cut this off so that when I reach the bottom of one page, the edge of the page meets the top of the next page and I can see a half-page of both the last and next page? I know that MS Word can and does behave this way. Can I change a setting to scroll the document in this manner in Adobe Reader?

• Semi-random clicking sound from Macbook Pro

  There is an occasional click sound coming from my Macbook Pro (17", 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo) I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently, but the computer was also in for service about week before that, so I can't be certain the OS upgrade is related. The sound has no set interval and frequency varies from rare to every few seconds. I can alleviate the sound by turning up the fan speed with smcFanControl. Turning the right fan up about half way seems to be sufficient. Unfortunately, turning up the left fan also causes the right to turn on, because the sound seems to be slightly more to the left. The cause seems to be either a fan or heat-related.

• keyboard intermittently stops working even after reinstalling windows 7; possibly a Chrome issue?

  My keyboard intermittently stops working. Sometimes a couple of keys will work, but usually none. Sometimes if I mash the ctrl+alt+windows keys randomly for a bit, the keyboard will let me type one more letter before stopping again. Sometimes the keys will open a program menu but usually not. I have even completely wiped my machine and reinstalled windows 7; the problem continues. Specs: Intel iMac (early 2006, 2.0GHz, 2MB RAM, 240GB HD) running ONLY Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit (NOT through boot camp) and using a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II.) Unplugging & reconnecting keyboard does NOT fix it. Connecting a different keyboard does NOT fix it. That one won't work, either. Drivers are up-to-date. Removing and reinstalling drivers does NOT fix it. Restarting the computer does NOT fix it. In fact, when the Windows logon screen appears the keyboard won't work and neither will the icon to pull up the on-screen keyboard. My mouse can click around just fine. I can only log onto a non-password protected account. Generally, logging into as different Windows user fixes it. I can then log back on to my main user account and continue work for a few hours until it happens again. Clearing my Chrome browsing data stopped the problem from recurring for a week or so. I have already REINSTALLED Windows 7 (not just a restore.) The problem returned after 2 days of use. I use Avira free antivirus software, and repeated scans turn up nothing fishy. I suspect it is related to something in Google Chrome because I used my google account to reload all my previous Chrome extensions, saved data, etc. (Chrome Extensions Installed: AdBlock, Better Google Tasks, DropBox, FB Photo Zoom, Google Mail Checker, StayFocusd.) Any ideas? Any at all?

• Unhappy with performance of GBit Ethernet to Fiber converter

  I just bought a TP-Link MC200CM GBit Ethernet (1000-T) to Fiber (1000-SX) media converter. The device works but I'm unhappy with the performance: When connecting my computer over 1000-T (twisted pair, Cat 6, 18meters) with my server, I get a throughput of about 610MBit/s. If I replace the cable with two media converters, I'm left with about 310-315MBit/s (i.e. half the performance).   There a million different pages around the Internet with conflicting information on how much thermal paste to apply and how to spread it. Some say a half-bean-sized drop in the middle, others say a circle or rectangle on the CPU. Some tell you to let the heatsink's base spread it, while others say to spread it with a knife or your finger with a plastic bag on it. Some coolers even come it with applied fully on the base, like Corsair H50 and all Arctic Cooling products. What is the best way to apply and spread thermal paste, and how much of it?
