• Provide "Paste Link" Functionality in C# Winforms App

  I would like to add Copy-Paste Link functionality to an application. The application replaces a complex Excel workbook. I would like to be able to copy tables, text, and charts from the application and use Paste Link in MS Word. For the uninitiated: With Excel, when you use Paste Link for the tables, text, charts, etc. the items update in Word when you change them in Excel. Does anyone know for sure if this is/is not possible (is it some proprietary feature of MS Word-Excel)? If not, can anyone point me to some resources that will help (either an app that does this or a tutorial/write-up). Thanks!

• Troubleshooting source of heavy resource-usage on a server 2008 running multiple sites

  Hi, I am running about 10 asp.net websites on a hosted virtual server. The server runs Server 2008 - each website is backed by its own database running on SQL server 2008 on the same box. Lately the box has seemed really slow. The only kind of discovery i could think of doing was looking in the task manager, where i can see w3wp and sqlserver.exe jumping to 40% cpu usage every 5-10 seconds. What are the steps i can take to determine which of my websites is taking these resources and or what database is getting hit the most? I have of course ssms installed on the machine as well. As you can tell, my sysadmin skills are very very limited - any help would be much appreciated.

  I am writing a custom control that is a ListView that has a CheckBox on each item in the ListView to indicate that item is Selected. So if my items have an ID property, I can specify using the SelectedValuesPath property "ID". The SelectedValues property would then return a collection of ID values. I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to implement my SelectedValues DependencyProperty so that I could Bind a Collection of values to it, and when the control is loaded, the CheckBoxes are checked with items that have values that correspond to the SelectedValues. I've considered using the PropertyChangedCallBack event, but can't quite figure out how I could write that to achieve my goal. I'm also unsure of how I find the correct ListViewItem to set it as Selected. And lastly, if I can find the ListViewItem and set it to be Selected, won't that fire my SelectionChanged event each time I set a ListViewItem to be Selected?

  hi guys, i'm totally new to the asp.net mvc stack and i was wondering what happened to the simple Page object and the Request ServerVariables object? basically what i wanted to do is to pull out the client's pc ip address. but i fail to understand how the current MVC structure has changed all of this. as far as i can understand, most of the variable object has been replaced by the HttpRequest variants? anybody care to share some resources? really a sea of stuff to learn in the asp.net mvc world :) thanks.

  The manual on Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader states the following: When using module bootstraps with Zend_Application, an instance of Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader will be created by default for each discrete module, allowing you to autoload module resources. Source: http://framework.zend.com/manual/zh/zend.loader.autoloader-resource.html#zend.loader.autoloader-resource.module This requires me to create an empty bootstrap class for each of my modules or else resource autoloading per module won't work with the build-in autoloader. Now I have two questions What is a discrete module? Is there a way to have this resource autoloader registered by default for each module without the need to create a bootstrap file for each module? I want it available in each module and creating so many empty bootstrap classes is something i'd rather prevent.

  I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

• How do you prevent brute force attacks on RESTful data services

  Hi, I'm about to implement an RESTful API to our website (based on WCF data services, but that probably does not matter). All data offered via this API belongs to certain users of my server, so I need to make sure only those users have access to my resources. For this reason, all requests have to be performed with a login/password combination as part of the request. What's the recommended approach for preventing brute force attacks in this scenario? I was thinking of logging failed requests denied due to wrong credentials and ignoring requests originating from the same IP after a certain threshold of failed requests has been exceeded.   Howdy, Are there any resources out there that defines how a well formed XML or Schema may look like for InfoPath? When designing a new form, there is an option to base the new form off of an existing XML document or XML Schema as the data source. I am looking for any guidelines or rules that will help me make sure the structure of the XML file I use to create the form will work the best it could work. • Able to ping but cannot browse after several hours running of my python program

  It's a GUI program I wrote in python checking website/server status running on my XP SP3, multi threads are used to check different site/server. After several hours running, the program starts to get urlopen error timed out all the time, and this always happens right after a POST request from a server(not a certain one, might be A or B or C), and it's also not the first POST request causing the problem, normally after several hours running and it happens to make a POST request at an unknown moment, all you get from then on is urlopen error timed out. I'm still able to ping but cannot browse any site, once the program closed everything's fine. It's definitely the program causing this problem, well I just don't know how to debug/check what the problem is, also don't know if it's from OS side or my program wasting too many resources/connections(are you still able to ping when too many connections used?), would anybody please help me out?

• Concatenating text in an ASP.NET localized label

  Trying to localize text in ASP.NET labels... want to add a ':' after the localized text. I could just add the ':' to the localized text in the resource file, but that seems silly... there should be an easy way to do this. <asp:Label id="RoleTypeLabel" runat="server" Text='<%$ Resources: GS3, RoleTypeLabel %>:' AssociatedControlID="RoleTypeDropDown"></asp:Label> (note the ':' at the end of Text='...') Of course, this doesn't work... and neither does anything I can think of to concatenate a ':' onto the end of the localized text. Anyone know how to do it? TIA, James

• Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

  As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database.   My company is developing a plugin/add-on for Visual Studio 2010. When the user asks to display the help for our product, we plan on opening an HTML page (or suite of pages) within Visual Studio. I'm helping to design and implement the help system. What web engine/version is used within Visual Studio 2010? According to Wikipedia it is not Trident(!). Am I allowed to load remote JavaScript content (via a <script> element)? Am I allowed to use XHR to load remote content? Will my page be trusted and have access to the FileSystemObject? I would appreciate any resources you can give me on programming specifically to the 'web' capabilities of VisualStudio2010-as-a-browser.

• How to configure encoding in maven

  When I run maven install on my multi module maven project I always get the following output: [WARNING] File encoding has not been set, using platform encoding UTF-8, i.e. build is platform dependent! So, I googled around a bit, but all I can find is that I have to add <properties> <project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding> </properties> to my pom.xml. But it's already there (in the parent pom.xml). Configuring <encoding> for the maven-resources-plugin or the maven-compiler-plugin also doesn't fix it. So what's the problem?

• How (and where) to get aligned tRNA sequences (and import it into R)

  (This is a database / R commands question) I wish (for my thesis work), to import tRNA data into R and have it aligned. My questions are: 1) What resources can I use for the data. 2) What commands might help me with the import/alignment.   I want to use a graph database using php. Can you point out some resources on where to get started? Is there any example code / tutorial out there? Or are there any other methods of storing data that relate to each other in totally random/abstract situations? Very abstract example of the relations needed: John relates to Mary, both relate to School, John is Tall, Mary is Short, John has Blue Eyes, Mary has Green Eyes, query I want is which people are related to 'Short people that have Green Eyes and go to School' - answer John It is possible in MySQL but it would require a fixed set of attributes/columns for each item and a complex non-flexible query, instead I need every attribute to be an item by itself and instead of 'belonging' to something, to be 'related' to something.

  For an ai-class project I need to implement a reinforcement learning algorithm which beats a simple game of tetris. The game is written in Java and we have the source code. I know the basics of reinforcement learning theory but was wondering if anyone in the SO community had hands on experience with this type of thing. What would your recommended readings be for an implementation of reinforced learning in a tetris game? Are there any good open source projects that accomplish similar things that would be worth checking out? • Can IIS admin change password of Windows Service account

  We have a service account defined for anonymous access which is used for several web sites hosted on the web server. This account has access to several network resources like report server, file servers and so on. While deploying a new web site, we used the same service account for anonymous access. IIS takes the username/password for the account and then a dialog opens for confirm password. Accidently, we gave a wrong password in both the text boxes, the new site with wrong password is working fine but all other previously hosted sites which were using the service account, started giving the unautorized access error. Is it possible that when we entered wrong password for the new web site, the password of the account got reset and all sites stopped functioning?

  I have a DataTemplate inside a global/shared ResourceDictionary like this which targets a DataType: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type foo:Bar}"> <!-- My DataTemplate visual tree goes here... --> </DataTemplate> This DataTemplate replaces my all foo:Bar types on all my Views (UserControls/Windows). What I want to do is to apply this template to only certain views, keeping the other views are not affected by this DataTemplate. I can copy this DataTemplate to Resources sections of each of these view, but I don't want to copy/paste the contents of the DataTemplate which would result in maintenance headaches.

• Archiving an Entire Rails Site

  I have a Ruby on Rails site that was only needed for a short period of time during which users added various objects to a mySQL database, commenting on them, associating themselves with them, etc. etc. etc. The question is this: the site is no longer needed until a week next year around this time when I will clear the database and use it again (starting from scratch). What's the best way to archive the current site so that the existing content is still viewable but no new content can be added? By best way, I mean the method by which the least system resources will be used, the server will be the safest, etc. Any suggestions?

• Functional Programming - Lots of emphasis on recursion, why?

  I am getting introduced to Functional Programming [FP] (using Scala). One thing that is coming out from my initial learnings is that FPs rely heavily on recursion. And also it seems like, in pure FPs the only way to do iterative stuff is by writing recursive functions. And because of the heavy usage of recursion seems the next thing that FPs had to worry about were StackoverflowExceptions typically due to long winding recursive calls. This was tackled by introducing some optimizations (tail recursion related optimizations in maintenance of stackframes and @tailrec annotation from Scala v2.8 onwards) Can someone please enlighten me why recursion is so important to functional programming paradigm? Is there something in the specifications of functional programming languages which gets "violated" if we do stuff iteratively? If yes, then I am keen to know that as well. PS: Note that I am newbie to functional programming so feel free to point me to existing resources if they explain/answer my question. Also I do understand that Scala in particular provides support for doing iterative stuff as well.

  In my web application VS 2008 solution, I have the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory and a whole set of language directories for it (ar, cs, de,es, fr, he, etc...) I don't remember how the language directories got in there. If I am using other languages via the ACT, do I need these directories? If not, then I don't? When I do a rebuild solution, the dll (AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll) in these directories disappear. If I need them, what do I need to do to keep them from being deleted during a rebuild?

I do some very simple configuration to point it to the proper resources: Map<String, String> initParams = new HashMap<String, String>(); initParams.put("com.sun.jersey.config.property.packages", "com.sample.service"); ApplicationDescriptor appDescriptor = new ApplicationDescriptor(); appDescriptor.setServletInitParams(initParams); super.setupTestEnvironment(appDescriptor); This works fine and the Jersey components are available and working as expected. I'm now trying to add some Mule functionality to some of these Jersey calls, but Mule is not being properly initialized/configured by Grizzly. Has anyone gotten this kind of setup running? What additional configuration do I need to do with JerseyTest/GrizzlyWebServer to get it to initialize Mule properly?

  I have swf that loads swf, which loads another swf(video player). Is there a trick in publish settings? everything works fine on my local machine, when I upload it on the sever error happen and video doesnt load SecurityError: Error #2148: SWF file http:// (URL where Site is hosted)/video.swf cannot access local resource file:///Macintosh%20HD/Users/..flash.flv.   A colleague of mine made an assertion that "your employer owns all patents that you file while an employee". Is this accurate? For example: Suppose I'm an employee of company xyz where I make widgets of type "w". In my spare time I make widgets of type "t" as a hobby. I do not use any resources from company xyz at all for my hobby. Also the widget types are completely different. For example w could be lawn mower wheels and t could be sliding door frames (so I'm not using any skills learned from my employment at company xyz when making widgets of type t). If I were to file and receive a patent for widgets of type t would company xyz have any rights/ownership to this at all?
