• Admin interface in Rails

  I have an admin controller located in controllers/admin/admin_controller.rb I also have a pages controller located in controllers/admin/pages_controller.rb pages_controller.rb inherits from admin_controller.rb in routes.rb, I have an admin namespace as such: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :pages end I want the admin have basic CRUD functionality in pages_controller.rb (I know how to do that) I want the index and show methods to be available to front-end users I would like the show and index actions to use separate views, but the same code. Questions: Should I create a new pages_controller for the front-end, or share the methods index and show? If share, how would I display separate views depending on whether the url is /admin/pages or /pages If share, should I place pages_controller in /controllers/admin (where it is now) or just in /controllers? • My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

  I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file. All contained in the text file is : : E/(): Device disconnected: 1 Since I am not sure of using log cat, so I am posting a screenshot to make clear what I have done. • Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

  I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. • Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. • Java - copy Jar Folder

  Hey Java - Developers Actually I am confronted with a Problem. I've got a ".apk-File" in one Package of my Application. apk is a kind of a jar File (apk = Android Package). I now want to copy this jar-file out of my Programm onto any other Location at the PC. Normally I would do this by using: FileInputStream is = new FileInputStream(this.getClass().getResource("/resources/myApp.apk").getFile()); And then write it on the disk with using a FileOutputStream. ... but since an .apk is a kind of a .jar it doesn't work. It just copies the .apk file. but without the containing other files. any help would be appreciated

• TabWidget Activity Handling - Does it Create a New Activity EVERY Time?

  When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order––A, B, A, C, A, B––how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

  If a specific release date is not available (as I suspect it is not), can you provide resources for tracking how close it is to the desired feature set that allows release. I'm not necessarily asking for a percentage gauge, or X of Y features completed list. A list of bugs marked in whichever section of the perl RT instance that's tracking Rakudo bugs would meet my criteria, even more so if the list is dynamic (I.e. it's a list of bugs tagged in some manner, not a static list of ticket numbers). If there are only a few planned features left to be finished/tested before it's considered ready for final testing, listing those would also be sufficient.

  Correct me if anything is wrong. Now when we use Spring DAO for ORM templates, when we use @Transactional attribute, we do not have control over the transaction and/or session when the method is called externally, not within the method. Lazy loading saves resources - less queries to the db, less memory to keep all the collections fetched in the app memory. So, if lazy=false, then everything is fetched, all associated collections, that is not effectively, if there are 10,000 records in a linked set. Now, I have a method in a DAO class that is supposed to return me a User object. It has collections that represent linked tables of the database. I need to get a object by id and then query its collections. Hibernate "failed to lazily initialize a collection" exception occurs when I try to access the linked collection that this DAO method returns. Explain please, what is a workaround here?

  Welcome, How can enable remote terminal login into Ubuntu 9.10 using usb-serial terminal ? I got created device ttyUSB0 and i want allow to log-in using hyper-terminal. I found some resources but they are related to real! hardware rs232 ports, i can't find any information about USB converter. Right now i have established connection between that usb-serial port and my laptop (i can send text writing to port cp sometext.txt /dev/ttyUSB0 and read using hyperterminal). Any idea ? Regards

• Android - Convert Color Resource to Color in Domain Object

  I have a domain object, where I created a method to return a text color based on the internal state of the domain object. I have defined the colors in a color.xml file as resources. The problem I have now, is that I would like to return a Color object instead of a resource ID from the domain object method. This way I can set the text color of a TextView by just calling textView.setTextColor(domainObj.getTextColor()) since it expects a Color object and not a resource ID. Currently, in an Activity, I can call getResources().getColor(domainObj.getTextColorResource()) to convert a resource ID to a color, but I would like this done in the domain object and I am not sure how I would do this when I do not have access to the getResources method. Are there any cleaner options than passing in a Resource object into the method, or domain object? Thanks

• Custom ASP.NET MVC cache controllers in a shared hosting environment?

  I'm using custom controllers that cache static resources (CSS, JS, etc.) and images. I'm currently working with a hosting provider that has set me up under a full trust profile. Despite being in full trust, my controllers fail because the caching strategy relies on the File class to directly open a resource file prior to treatment and storage in memory. Is this something that would likely occur in all full trust shared hosting environments or is this specific to my host? The static files live within my application's structure and not in an arbitrary server path. It seems to me that custom caching would require code to access the file directly, and am hoping someone else has dealt with this issue.

• Control.EndInvoke resets call stack for exception

  I don't do a lot of Windows GUI programming, so this may all be common knowledge to people more familiar with WinForms than I am. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any resources to explain the issue, I encountered today during debugging. If we call EndInvoke on an async delegate. We will get any exception thrown during execution of the method re-thrown. The call stack will reflect the original source of the exception. However, if we do something similar on a Windows.Forms.Control, the implementation of Control.EndInvoke resets the call stack. This can be observed by a simple test or by looking at the code in Reflector. The relevant code excerpt from EndInvoke is here: if (entry.exception != null) { throw entry.exception; } I understand that Begin/EndInvoke on Control and async delegates are different, but I would have expected similar behavior on Control.EndInvoke. Is there any reason Control doesn't do whatever it is async delegates do to preserve the original call stack?

  Is there a real solution for COMET AND PHP combination? Basically, I've come to a point that I need to update a user home page periodically whenever there is new data in the database. As far as I understand, I need to open a persistent connection between my server and my clients browsers to update the contents of their home page as soon as new info. available without dedicating a lot of resources but I had no luck finding anything clear about this issue. I read many articles suggests that PHP is not a good language to implement COMET. My web application is completely programmed in PHP and I don't want to learn another language but if I'm forced to, Would you suggest a good language to start with? The tool provided is called 'Data Synchronization' This tool allows for this type if activity to occur upon request via the workspace environment. How might I do this automatically? I noticed there is a Batch Scheduler for which I can request command line batch file to run at a pre-specified time. However, I do not know what resources are available to show me how to do this for the Data-Synchronizations.

  Hi, everyone. I've been experimenting with Cocoa and Objective-C programming on the Mac for a few months now, and I am wanting to start developing applications that manage large amounts of data. The trouble is, I'm not really sure where to start with databases. I have a good background in Java programming with SQLite. I've read a bit about CoreData and I haven't been able to find any good resources for just manually connecting to the database. I'm looking for recommendations. Should I try CoreData, and if so, can anyone recommend a good tutorial for someone new to the language? Or, should I try to manually connect and query an SQLite database somehow, and, if so, any tutorials? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

• javax.sql.DataSource.getConnection() locks system

  I'm using the Apache Commons DBCP library for connection pooling in a desktop application. I've done this before and never had a problem but the latest application has started sometimes locking up on the call to getConnection() on my DataSource. The application just hangs after that call. I'm closing up my resources when I'm done with them. Is there any known reason why this might happen? I'm not even sure where to being troubleshooting this now that I've got it narrowed down to this method. It doesn't always hang - sometimes it happens fairly quickly, sometimes it takes a long time. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, although lately I can get it to happen within a few minutes.

  I have had this debate with some peers off and on for a while. I am certified in the HP tools, but have been spending more and more time with VSTS Test Edition 2008. I am looking for opinions on what people think of the future of both products and how they compete. LoadRunner's strengths include its vast array of protocols supported. Unfortunately since HP took over from Mercury, they are beginning to lag behind, especially in the new internet spaces. VSTS Test, once very limited, is now quite impressive, especially in 2010. I don't know if it makes business sense, but I would love for VSTS Test to take on some additional protocols. Many of my clients would like to move away from HP and their licensing costs. Finally, I am looking for good resources for VSTS Test. I have been playing with it, but would like to see some dedicated courses/material, instead of just a part of the larger VSTS. Thanks!

• Can I import sql with php?

So I want to refresh my php application once a day with a cron job. But I never wrote a cron job script before. I understand that I have to truncate all the tables/data and add the initial data. • How can I create an email newsletter by taking objects from a database?

  Well, I'm trying to create a newsletter, that will send emails to users in a database. The newsletter itself would draw "events" and other activities from a database. Whats the best way to take that list, and put them in an email? I was thinking about putting them into an html page, then sending an html email, but not all emails support html(like school email). • HTML5 Cache manifest file itself is not cached, and called at each resource load

  We have a web app that runs on the iPhone.The manifest file is ok, and the resources(html, css, js) are cached correctly.The page sits in the home screen. The trouble is, when the page loads a resource from the cache, there is as well a GET call to the server to read the Cache Manifest file.The server is configured to send the correct header (max-age=31536000; public, etc...) and caches well all other files except the cache manifest itself. Is this a normal behavior? It looks there is a slight lag, because of that call, for each resource load.Any idea, if these multiple calls can get a status 304 or even better avoided?

I would like to do some market research to make sure I'm on the right track with the feature set. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget for a large sample size. I understand that I won't be able to get anything near statistical significance on the cheap, but some feedback is better than no feedback I figure.   Hello I can't find any resources which can answer why I'm getting an error with this: oncomplete="#{MyBacking.oError ? #{rich:component('oErrorPanel')}.show() : return false;}" in a richfaces a4j:commandButton. oError is referring to a method in my bean called isOError. I'm getting the error SEVERE: Servlet.service() for servlet Faces Servlet threw exception org.apache.el.parser.ParseException: Encountered " "?" "? "" at line 1, column 30. Was expecting one of: "}" ... "." ... ... I want to say 'if a method returns true, show modal panel A otherwise false'. Any help much appreciated.

• setting permissions of python module (python setup install)

  I am configuring a distutils-based setup.py for a python module that is to be installed on a heterogeneous set of resources. Due to the heterogeneity, the location where the module is installed is not the same on each host however disutils picks the host-specific location. I find that the module is installed without o+rx permissions using disutils (in spite of setting umask ahead of running setup.py). One solution is to manually correct this problem, however I would like an automated means that works on heterogeneous install targets. For example, is there a way to extract the ending location of the installation from within setup.py? Any other suggestions? Thanks! SetJmp
