• How can I calculate the sum of all positive integers less than n? [closed]

  I have the following function: f(n) = f(n - 1) + (n - 1) f(0) = 0 n >= 0 I have n declared on column A, and need the result of f(n) on column B. I'm trying to find the Excel formula equivalent for this function. Sample Result: A | B --+-- 0 | 0 or: A | B --+-- 1 | 0 or: A | B --+-- 4 | 6 but never: A | B --+-- 0 | 0 1 | 0 2 | 1 ... The biggest problem is, I can't simulate the value of f(n - 1). So referencing the previous row like the above example is invalid. I'm almost sure the answer is trivial, I just can't find it.

The column sums are easy via the 'dims' argument of colSums(): > colSums(a, dims = 1) but I cannot find a way to use rowSums() on the array to achieve the desired result, as it has a different interpretation of 'dims' to that of colSums(). It is simple to compute the desired row sums using: > apply(a, 3, rowSums) [,1] [,2] [1,] 12 12 [2,] 15 15 [3,] 18 18 but that is just hiding the loop. Are there other efficient, truly vectorised, ways of computing the required row sums?

• One big call vs. multiple smaller TSQL calls

  I have a ADO.NET/TSQL performance question. We have two options in our application: 1) One big database call with multiple result sets, then in code step through each result set and populate my objects. This results in one round trip to the database. 2) Multiple small database calls. There is much more code reuse with Option 2 which is an advantage of that option. But I would like to get some input on what the performance cost is. Are two small round trips twice as slow as one big round trip to the database, or is it just a small, say 10% performance loss? We are using C# 3.5 and Sql Server 2008 with stored procedures and ADO.NET.

  I have an image class (VisionImage) that is a black box to me. I'm attempting to serialize the image object to file using Serialization Surrogates as explained on this page. Upon further inspection, the object and the resulting image are both marked as disposed.   Hi! The next call to Bitmap.compress(), has a different behavior on the Emulator and on a real device. In the Emulator, result is true, and in a real device the same call returns false. FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(destinationFile, true); boolean result = myBitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 100, fos); The thing is that on the emulator this is working great, on a real device ( a HERO) when calling .compress(), this returns false, witch means that it was unable to convert the image properly.   Lets say that I would like to construct a list (L2) by appending elements of another list (L) one by one. The result should be exactly the same as the input. This task is silly, but it'll help me understand how to recurse through a list and remove certain elements. I have put together the following code: create(L, L2) :- (\+ (L == []) -> L=[H|T], append([H], create(T, L2), L2);[]). calling it by create([1,2,3,4], L2) returns L2 = [1|create([2,3,4], **)\. which is not a desired result.

• Using exponential smoothing with NaN values

  I have a sample of some kind that can create somewhat noisy output. The sample is the result of some image processing from a camera, which indicates the heading of a blob of a certain color. It is an angle from around -45° to +45°, or a NaN, which means that the blob is not actually in view. In order to combat the noisy data, I felt that exponential smoothing would do the trick. However, I'm not sure how to handle the NaN values. On the one hand, involving them in the math would result in a NaN average, which would then prevent any meaningful results. On the other hand, ignoring NaN values completely would mean that a "no-detection" scenario would never be reported. And just to complicate things, the data is also noisy in that it can get false NaN value, which ideally would be smoothed somehow to prevent random noise. Any ideas about how I could implement such an exponential smoother?

• Can you do a struts2 action redirect using POST instead of GET?

I am having issues, because unfortunately I need to pass a large amount of data between the two actions. IE7 will only allow GET requests to be like 2k, so its blowing up when I'm just over that limit when the response calls a get request to the other action. Is it possible for me to set this redirect, to end up with a POST being called to the other action?

  I want to run a procedure to force a row lock on a row, but I don't want to return a result set to the client, nor do I actually want to update anything. • PostGres - run a query in batches?

  Is it possible to loop through a query so that if (for example) 500,000 rows are found, it'll return results for the first 10,000 and then rerun the query again? So, what I want to do is run a query and build an array, like this: $result = pg_query("SELECT * FROM myTable"); $i = 0; while($row = pg_fetch_array($result) ) { $myArray[$i]['id'] = $row['id']; $myArray[$i]['name'] = $row['name']; $i++; } But, I know that there will be several hundred thousand rows, so I wanted to do it in batches of like 10,000... 1- 9,999 and then 10,000 - 10,999 etc... The reason why is because I keep getting this error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 3 bytes) Which, incidentally, I don't understand how 3 bytes could exhaust 512M... So, if that's something that I can just change, that'd be great, although, still might be better to do this in batches?
