  When booting I will have to boot maybe 3 or 4 times to get a screen that is not displayed diagonally or is not using the full screen width. Hardware specification: HP s7727c with AMD64 and NVIDIA chipsets and Insignia 22" monitor/TV. The Ubuntu version is 9.10 Karmic. I'd like to stay current with Ubuntu on this machine, but have gone down to 9.10 to get this described functioning. I tried higher versions and could not get past the "black screen" I think this issue is connected to the NVIDIA chipset/driver problem. I am a GUI user and I don't follow the other solutions posted which make use of the command line. I suppose if the command line solution could be given without making any assumptions of the receiving person's knowledge base, then even I and others like me, could implement it.   We have here a way to log in the computers base on Ldap(openldap). You can use any seat with the login/pass you have. Well my problem is that everything worked fine till I had to upgrade Ubuntu to the last version (12.04). Now, it is far from impossible to log in because you only can choose administrator account! That would be my issue; I want to Lightdm allow me to choose the user e.g : pagonzalez or rmlago or whatever the login-name you have. I´ve been searching for 2 days now, and nothing comes up! Hope somebody here has any idea about it!

  This is somewhat related to this question. I'm about to sign a contract with a company that this sort of "all your base are belong to us" clause in it: it says that all programs, designs, sketches, drawings I create in relation to my job belong to the company. More or less usual stuff (unfortunately). What worries me, however, is this "drawings, sketches" thing, because I'm a hobby-artist and I paint and draw at my spare time. Can the company somehow claim ownership of intellectual rights on this work? Should I ask them to explicitly state that this clause does not extend to work of art or is this "in relation to the job" part is good enough?

  Suppose we have a class-hierarchy whose base class B requires a clone() method to be defined in its derivations. Whilst this works perfectly for most of them there is this one derivation X that holds an optional reference to a resource/object that can only be referenced from one instance of X. Whilst the rest of X can be cloned without problems this reference would have to be set to null/nil/nullptr. What is the correct way to handle this situation? X::clone() could throw an UncloneableException. Though this would be correct, it is not satisfying. Set the reference to null/nil/nullptr and leave no notice of it. The user of X has to know about Xs "particularities". Require derivations of B to define B::nearestClone(): the user of B has to be aware that the return value might not be a 1:1 clone. Something else?

  I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

I mean a specific way of building applications on top of it, with base classes, convention, etc. So why did you built your own framework? How could you justify that to the person that employs you. Have you measure the positive and negative impact of it? Regarding your experiences, did you notice that in some case a company framework produced real benefits, or on the other hand, increased costs of development (learning curve, debugging, maintenance, ...)?

• Textures selectively not applying in Unity

  On certain imported objects (fbx) in Unity, upon applying a material, only the base colour of the material is applied, with none of the tiled texture showing. This isn't universal; on a test model only some submeshes didn't show the texture, while some did. I have tried every combination of import/calculate normals/tangents to no avail. FYI I'm not exactly experienced with the software or gamedev in general; this is to make a small static scene with 3-4 objects max. One model tested was created in 3DSMax, the other in Blender. I've had this happen on every export from Blender, but only some submeshes from the 3DSMax model (internet sourced to test the problem)
