• How can I know if programming is right for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this, and the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before (a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months since then and I feel like giving up. I didn't get much training... about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience is kinda making me rethink my decision. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if this frustration is normal. How can I tell if programming is right for me?

• How should I handle search engines auto-correcting the spelling of a site's name?

  A client's site and company is called 'Tranin Communications' (Tranin is her last name). It ranks well in searches for her name but rather poorly in searches for the name of her site/company. I realized that this is largely due to* search engines (Google especially) assuming that the query was misspelled and automatically including results for both 'train communications' and 'communications training'. Both of those queries yield many high-ranking sites that completely drown out hers. Sometimes Google even shows results for 'communications training' instead of 'tranin communications', hiding her site altogether. Is there a way to report an incorrect auto-correction to Google or something I can do to discourage this behavior (e.g. a meta tag)? My searches have come up cold, any suggestions would be appreciated. *I've come to this conclusion because her site ranks very highly when the same queries are put in quotes.

• What are some good, simple examples for queues?

  I'm teaching CS2 (Java and data structures), and am having some difficulty coming up with good examples to use when teaching queues. The two major applications I use them for are multithreaded message passing (but MT programming is out of scope for the course), and BFS-style algorithms (and I won't be covering graphs until later in the term). I also want to avoid contrived examples. Most things that I think of, if I were actually going to solve them in a single-threaded fashion I would just use a list rather than a queue. I tend to only use queues when processing and discovery are interleaved (e.g. search), or in other special cases like length-limited buffers (e.g. maintaining last N items). To the extent practical, I am trying to teach my students good ways to actually do things in real programs, not just toys to show off a feature. Any suggestions of good, simple algorithms or applications of queues that I can use as examples but that require a minimum of other prior knowledge?

• How important is index size when searching?

  My company has recently began using Apache Solr to search its data. As we learn how to use it we have gone down the path of indexing multiple fields to get the results we need. Most of these are either N-Grammed or Edge-N-Grammed. Gramming by nature takes up a lot of space, which takes more time to search. Space is cheap, but time is less so. Index time is not too important, since a delta-import (only get the changes since last index) is extremely quick and you only pay a penalty on the first import. What we've not been able to determine is what effect the index size has on query times. Obviously a larger index takes longer to search, but the time added by n-gramming a field is difficult to predict. How do you determine whether a field is worth gramming? Can you predict how much longer a query will take when you gram a field?

• Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

• Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

• Logitech Microphone (AK5370) inaudible volume

  I bought this microphone from Amazon last week. It's detected just fine in 12.10. I can see it in the sound preferences. The problem is that the volume is so low as to be inaudible, even when turned up to maximum in this dialog. It is working, as I can see that the meter responds to noise, but it's just too low. alsamixer's control is the same, so that doesn't help. I tried messing around in pulseaudio too, but to no avail. • My first Windows Phone 7 application is live &ndash; from zero to submitted in 5 hours

  Tuesday evening I found myself minus family. I decided to use the time to “have a crack at this Silverlight Phone 7 stuff”. From zero (no experience, no tools installed, no membership on the AppHub) to submitted for approval took me from 8pm to 1am – with the last hour messing around with png files in Paint to complete the submission process! Two days later on Thursday it was approved and is now in the marketplace for you to install - or not :-) The application is very simple but it works and looks “finished” – and importantly I learnt a lot about what is involved and the power of our tooling to make this pretty easy to get going.   I have a website that I haven't had much time to take care of. I updated it 4 times since last October, the contents are all original and informative. I can see those cache from Way back Machine and the site was indexed in Yahoo, but not in google. Did I get my index on Google deleted because I did not update it often? Normally Google crawl often and index fast, I just got really worried if I did something wrong. Is it possible that I set something wrong in the hosting or something? Please help me

• Bit copy of encrypted home and other partitions

  My laptop is overheating so I need to save all my files before I format the hard drive. I learned how to copy dev/sdX using dd command. However, I am not sure what to copy. Picture from GParted here: http://is.muni.cz/www/256590/fig.png should I copy sda5 and sda6 only? Or sda2 and sda1? I do not need to use these data on another disk, I just want to be able to access them - therefore I want to put them on external hard drive. • I loose some directories when i upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04

  last day i upgraded my ubunut 11.10 desktop to ubuntu 12.04. I was running a KVM virtual about 7 machines and managed by virt-manage software.... anyway when i finished upgrading i found that virt-manager is not working so i have to reconfigure it again and install some other missing packages that was deleted!!!! anyway i solve this issue...then i started to restore my virtual machines i restore 2 machines without any problems the third and fourth ones (windows) make a check disk that takes more that 6 hours but finally it works... other machines i cant find their attached hard disks i don't know what happens but i cant found that files. 1- upgrading delete files!?!! 2- Is there anyway to restore those files? thanks in advance

• Do wordpress websites get indexed quicker by SE than a regular website?

  I registered a couple of domains with the names of categories of products we sell. I then installed wordpress in one of those domains and played around with it for a bit, and left it alone for about a month. There was a link on my regular website to that secondary website and that website was also registered in google's webmaster tools, but that's that. I then searched on google last week for that product category, and to my surprise, that secondary website showed up in the 2nd or 3rd page on google. Now my question is: Do search engines index wordpress websites quicker? I had given up on using wordpress for that website, since it's so simple, but should i use it, would it give me better results? • New hard drive means re-install everything

  I recently found a good deal on a 7200 RPM 500GB latpop drive and decided to upgrade myself to that. Ive been operating on a 150GB drive for a long time and hadnt been cleaning up old projects, encodings, etc. so it was running thin on space. This was a cheap upgrade (< $90) so I opted for it. I finally got a moment last evening to pop it in and start the fresh installs of everything. Doing so reminded me of how long this process takes for us geeky people. • Screen Scaling Problem

  I think this is what it's called but I'm not quite sure tbf, aha. Yeah, so I updated packages last night like I do every night, and when I booted my computer this morning I had a problem whereby the display ran over the edge of the screen. This has been a problem for a while, but I rectified it by changing a setting on the nVidia program, however I think it has been updated to remove said feature as I can't find it anymore. I have no settings on my screen to adjust this either, so I'm sorta stuck without the ~20px around the contour of my screen. It is a problem at all available resolutions. • Huge surge in direct traffic from one particular town

  Last month I noticed that the direct visits on our site have increased by nearly 150% whilst bounce rate is also considerably up. After drilling down further I can see that we have had nearly 2000 direct visits from one town in Connecticut called Stamford, with a bounce rate of 100%! I have been scratching around for answers but I can only find that it may be to do with our uptime monitoring tool; Pingdom. Does anyone know/have any experience with this kind of issue, any help is appreciated I have just noticed that we are receiving identical traffic in a town in England and a town in Scotland... This definitely makes me think it's to do with our uptime monitoring tool.

• upgrade from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 failed, now loads "grub rescue"

  I attempted to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 last night. Installation seemed to go fine, and this morning I had a message like "restart now to complete installation". So I restart, get an initial "Loading Operating System ..." message, followed by "error: file not found. Then it kicks into "grub rescue" mode. Previously I have this running as a dual boot (window 7) and I just ran the upgrade to 12.10 via the update manager in ubuntu. Any ideas on what is going on here, or what the error means? I know my way around the command line, but this is above my pay grade. Thanks for any advice.

• Need a remote desktop to a headless server without logging in first

  I've been using Linux for many years now but only to run servers. Over the last few days I've been struggling with a technical / configuration issue which I hope someone can help with. I've installed / un-installed many packages but just can't figure out what the "right" way of doing this is. The requirement seems simple Server runs Ubuntu 10.04 with xubuntu and SSH (I do NOT want to connect any screen, keyboard or mouse to the server) I have Windows 7 machine with putty on it and logging in to the server using SSH is fine I want to run an xterminal session on my Windows machine. Amongst the things I've tried is VNU but I can't get it to work because I believe you have to login on the server first. Thanks in advance

• Switching my legacy desktop back to Windows XP from Windows 7

  I was happy with Windows 7 at the beginning, until I started to add in the peripherals.  Windows 7 was never able to recognize any of my PCI video card (I know, I know, we should be in the DVI age). Anyway, I went through another 4 days of trouble setting my computer up with dual monitor in XP (also did a bunch of other things like getting rid of my sound card and taking the computer off RAID. Kind of feel stupid to put the computer on RAID in the first place because now I can have 2 drives: double the page files program seems to run faster Microsoft Sync toy 2.1 takes care of my backup needs (Thank god they solved the network drive issue) As of last night, the system is running beautifully.  I still have a laptop with Windows 7, but even that is in dual boot mode.

• What are the pros and cons of a non-fixed-interval update loop?

  I am studying various approaches to implementing a game loop and I have found this article. In the article the author implements a loop which, if the processing falls behind in time, skips frame renderings and just updates the game in a loop (the last variant called "Constant Game Speed independent of Variable FPS"). I do not understand why it is acceptable to call update_game() in a loop without making sure the update function is called at a particular interval. I do not see any value in doing this. I would think that in my game I want to be sure the game is updated periodically with a known period. So maybe it is worthwhile to have two threads, one would call update periodically, and the other one would redraw the game, also periodically? Would this be a good and practical approach? Of course I would need to synchronise the threads.

• Panning a 3d viewport in 2d direction with rotated camera

  I am using below code to pan the viewport (action script 3 code using flare3d framework) _mainCamera.x-= Input3D.mouseXSpeed; _mainCamera.z+= Input3D.mouseYSpeed; Where as Input3D.mouse[X|Y]Speed gives the displacement of the mouse on the X/Y axis starting from the position of the last frame. This works perfect if my camera is not rotated. However, if I rotate the camera (x by 30, y by 60) and pan the camera then it goes wrong. Which is actually correctly panning according to the code. But this is not desired and I know I need to do some math to get the correct x/y which I am not aware of it. Can some one help me achieving it? Update: I am getting an Idea but I am not sure how to do it :( Get the mouseX/Y deltas (xd,yd) Get the current camera coords (pos3d) Convert to screen coords (pos2d) Add deltas to screen coords (pos2d+ (xd,yd)) Convert above coords to 3d coords
