• Alt/Shift key not released after switching keyboard layout

  Sometimes when I switch layout using either Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift the Alt key is not recognized as being released thus if I press e.g. F a File menu opens up. Last time that happend I lost all data I filled into a text form on a webpage because I pressed the Home key while typing and Firefox suddenly went to my home page! Moreoever, it still remains unreleased after hundreds of keypresses like if I'm holding it! Same goes for the Shift key. I would rather file a bug at Launchpad if I could but I have no clue what fucking package name should I type in the ubuntu-bug command! Have anyone else had this issue? Can you suggest a solution or maybe another place to report this bug?

• Panning a 3d viewport in 2d direction with rotated camera

  I am using below code to pan the viewport (action script 3 code using flare3d framework) _mainCamera.x-= Input3D.mouseXSpeed; _mainCamera.z+= Input3D.mouseYSpeed; Where as Input3D.mouse[X|Y]Speed gives the displacement of the mouse on the X/Y axis starting from the position of the last frame. This works perfect if my camera is not rotated. However, if I rotate the camera (x by 30, y by 60) and pan the camera then it goes wrong. Which is actually correctly panning according to the code. But this is not desired and I know I need to do some math to get the correct x/y which I am not aware of it. Can some one help me achieving it? • Tiled perlin/value noise texture with (2^n)+1 size

  Actually what I have in mind is value noise I think, but what I am going to ask applies to both of them. It is known that if you want to produce tiled texture by using the perlin/value noise, the size of the texture should be specified as the power of 2 (2^n). Without any modifications to the algorithm when you use the size of (2^n)+1 the texture cannot be tiled anymore, so I am wondering whether it is possible (by modifying the algorithm somehow) to generate such tiling texture with the size of (2^n)+1. • My Hard Disk Drive is not visible until I use it

  So, suddenly something went wrong. At the beggining of my Ubuntu usage it was all right, but from about 2-4 weeks I've got this problem: Whenever I try to reach my HDD, i have to open it first by files explorer. Example: I use text editor. Last file fails to load, so I got to open it manually. It's in bookmarked file. I want to reach my bookmark, which is on HDD(partition for both Ubuntu and Windows , NTFS). If i want to reach my bookmark, i have to go there manually(or at least to HDD, then bookmarks pops up). It also doesn't appear at my side bar until i use it. It kinda looks like it wasn't mounted till then, I don't know. It would be nice if I could deal with it, let's say, automatically. Thanks in advance.

• new installation won't sync directories with my account

  I had a dual-boot arrangement on my desktop with 12.04 and 12.10 (testing). Last week, I managed to trash both and ended up re-installing both. After doing all the updates, I activated Ubuntu-one which worked just fine on the previous installations. On both 12.04 and 12.10, the Ubuntu-One window fails to show the folders for syncing and only syncs the Ubuntu-One folder. Adding a folder on my net book on which sync is working properly brings up a pop up on my desktop that tells me a new folder is available for syncing - but the Ubuntu window fails to show it. I have put a screenshot from my net book (working OK) and one from my desktop which shows the problem. Any suggestions please?

• Has an open console any chance to give more strength to the indie game world ?

  I have heard about the GPX, but i don't really think the embedded market is mature enough in terms of performance, but what about the home console market ? I'm not talking about last-generation graphics, because that would be economically impossible, but what about an hardware as fast as a playstation 2/Xbox 1/Gamecube ? For games, the trick would be to ask some editors to recompile their best sellers for the new machine: those games being from the PSX age or even older console generations, I think this would have a very low cost job and they could still make some good profit, but I need to know if this is doable technically, considering the architecture which can be quite exotic. Do you think it would be a viable project to talk about to investors ?

• weird text stuttering

  i've been having a strange problem with ubuntu lately. i searched in the forums and so but couldn't find anything. the things is that text in firefox and text editors stutters or freezes randomly. for example, when i am writing and url and suddenly want to erase it, the last letters freeze in their place for a few seconds while the others are being erased. or when i am reading something in the text editor, it mixes paragraphs and such, like an old and crazy epson inkjet printer.. please help?

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth!   I am currently in my last year of a Masters in Physics at Uni and I am looking to go into a job that is mainly programming based. As part of my course we have learnt C++, Matlab and as a hobby I taught myself HTML, CSS, JAVA and a bit of JavaScript. After getting to this stage in my degree I've realised that its actually the programming side of Physics that I enjoy most. I've been working on a few Android apps & websites in my spare time but only things that utilize what I know in JAVA, HTML etc. Using Physics in programming is good fun but I don't want to limit myself just to Physics based jobs. I just want to know a few things: What kind of jobs can I apply for that would require the kind of skills I already posses/can work towards possessing in a year Can I compete with graduates who have had a lot more programming in their course for example Computer Science? • Reboot only shuts down and doesn't actually boot again

  I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Server on an abmx rack mount server. When I attempt to reboot with sudo shutdown -r now, the machine just shuts down and doesn't come back up without me manually pressing the power button. The output of last -x, runlevel (to lvl 2) 3.2.0-29-generic Wed Oct 31 14:32 - 14:37 (00:05) reboot system boot 3.2.0-29-generic Wed Oct 31 14:32 - 14:37 (00:05) shutdown system down 3.2.0-29-generic Wed Oct 31 14:30 - 14:32 (00:02) runlevel (to lvl 6) 3.2.0-29-generic Wed Oct 31 14:30 - 14:30 (00:00) This appears to show that the system rebooted, but it went dark (no power lights, BIOS, etc) and I had to go press the power button in order to make it boot back up. The machine does have some sort of Intel Boot Agent that usually appears before the BIOS, I'm wondering if it could be causing this. I'm not sure what information is useful for debugging this, but I put the output of lshw in http://pastebin.com/mBy72kTQ

• Nonresponsive UI starting a few days ago; no obvious resource shortage

  The mouse stops and moves jerkily, and sometimes won't register clicks. Gnome stopped responding a few hours ago--everything looks fine, but no clicks on menu items do anything. I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 since it was released; 8GB RAM and a 60GB SSD. I haven't added any hardware or software recently except the Ubuntu recommended updates; the last thing was the bitcoin client a week ago. top shows 3 CPU cores free and over a gig of ram left. I don't know what else to look at.

• Ubuntu 12.04LTS loads straight to terminal!! startx doesn't work!

  I have been using ubuntu 12.04LTS for last few months, and now suddenly something has happened to it. As a result, terminal opens on every start up when I login . Although, if i login as a guest, it works fine. I have already used startx command, and tried reinstalling the desktop as well but it doesn't work! If I use ctrl+alt+f9, terminal screen vanishes and a black screen appears, and then nothing happens after that. ctrl+alt+f1 takes me to the command prompt. I know similar questions have been asked here, but i could not find a solution for my laptop. Please help!!

• Splitting Logic, Data, Layout and "Hacks"

  Sure, we all heard of programming patterns such as MVVM, MVC and such. But that isn't really what I'm looking into as Layout, Data and Logic is already pretty much split up (XML-Layout markup, Database, insert your language of choice here). The platform I am developing for is hard to maintain over the updated versions and older OSes. The project significantly grew up over the last few months and dealing with different platform versions really is a pain. For example simply disabling an user interface control for all existing versions took me around 40 lines of code in the logic layer, wrangling around with invocation, delegation, singletons that provide UI handling and so on. Is there a clean way to keep track of those "hacks" by maybe excluding it into separate classes or even packages? Should I overwrite existing framework code in order to handle my requirements correctly? If so, does that concept have a name?

  I have a foreach statement in my code, where each iteration calculates huge amounts of data and goes to the next iteration. I run this code, but when I read the log, I see there's a memory leak error. PHP.net says when this happens, using gc_enabled() is a good way to handle this. I've added these lines to last line of the foreach block: echo "Check GC enabled : " . gc_enabled(); echo "Number of affected cycles : " . gc_collect_cycles(); And this is the output: Check GC enabled : 1 Number of affected cycles : 0 Why do cycles exist, but the affected cycles is 0?

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• What are some potential issues in blocking all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud?

  Recently I, along with the rest of the world, have seen a significant increase in what appears to be scraping from Amazon AWS-related sources. So simply put, I blocked all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud for our hosted application. I know that some good services/bots are now hosted on the cloud, and I'm wondering if certain IP addresses should be allowed, as they may gather data that would in the end benefit our site's SEO rankings? -- UPDATE -- I added a feature to block requests from the following hosts: Amazon Softlayer ServerDeals GigAvenue Since then, I have seen my network traffic decrease (monitored by network out bytes). Average operation is around 10,000,000 bytes. You can see where last week I was not blocking, then started blocking. I've since removed the blocks and will see what the outcome is.
