• Speaking at PASS 2012 Summit in Seattle #sqlpass

  I will deliver two sessions at the next PASS Summit 2012: one is title Inside DAX Query Plans and the other is Near Real-Time Analytics with xVelocity (without DirectQuery).These will be two sessions that require a lot of preparation and even if I have already much to say, I still have a long work to do this summer in order to go deeper in several details that I want to investigate for completing these sessions.I already look forward to come back in Seattle!In the meantime, you have to study SSAS Tabular and if you want to get a real jumpstart why not attending one of the next SSAS Tabular Workshop Online? • Unable to install 11.10 to new OCZ Agility 3 SSD

  I know the discussion here where they are not getting the same error as I. I use Lenovo Thinkpad X60. The default partition table: sd1 ext4 53.91GB, sd2 extended 1.99GB and sd5 swap 1.99GB. I get Input/output error during read on /dev/sda when trying to install from LiveCD -mode and when trying to install directly. I get the error normally at the stage of choosing time zone or very last at choosing the keyboard layout. Then there is the box with buttons: back, ignore and continue. Neither of them put the process forward so I need to cancel it. How can you install Ubuntu to SDD disk?

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04.1, last upgraded from 12.04 I'm using mts mblaze to access internet. Two days ago, I was using vpn on my system, suddenly cisco disconnected & my system hung while I was accessing my office system. I didnt' have any other idea, so I forcibly shut down the system. After that, connection is made, but firefox or chromium both don't find any page. I think there's some problem with the system package. Please let me know a good solution. Regards, Chetan

• Best practices for launching a new software version

  I rebuilt a web app to replace a version that we have been using for the last 3-4 years. We have a few thousand clients and a few hundred active users per day. The functionality is basically the same. The new version is a little bit faster with a few enhancement features and there are a lot of behind the scenes changes that the clients will never see. The UI is quite different but ultimately much easier to use and navigate. How should I go about having our clients stop using the old system and start using the new one? I am currently putting together a video that will play on the web site as well as within the app. The video will go through the pages and focus on some key changes. I was also thinking about an intro page that will display once the user logs in and explains some of the features.

• "Ubuntu One" Value could not be retrieved. (ValueError: cannot convert float NaN to integer)

  When I try to start Ubuntu one (after the registration) I receive the this error. Plus it keeps saying "loading.." I am using Ubuntu 11.10 freshly installed. I've try to reinstall ubuntuone after remove them from "ubuntu software center" and remove all the entri ubuntuone* from synaptic. Only the last slice of the ubuntu one control panel seems responding and display "Value could not be retrieved. (ValueError: cannot convert float NaN to integer)". • Restart Trouble Ubuntu 12.10

  I`ve installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 3 different machines: Acer AspireOne Netbook Lenovo T60 Notebook Desktop - P5P77 - Asus mainboard - I3 - porcessor I have the same issue on all of themm they won`t restart (Shut Down work), I can see the proceses are killed but it freezez on black screen total iresponsive. Even when I access the bios config to modify something then Save&Exit then restart I get the same thing. This is the same for all 3 machines. I also cleaned up the desktop system, last version of bios update, full HDD format, fresh win7 installed (practicly no trace of the old Ubuntu 12.10) still the same problem. Some time ago I had Ubuntu 11.10 on the desktop system, it worked perfectly. I also mention that I tried all combinations of ACPI settings in BIOS, unfortunately with no results. • Java dev learning Python: what concepts do I need to wrap my head around?

  I've run through a few tutorials and written some small projects. I'm right in the middle of a small project now infact. All is going well enough thanks in no small part to Uncle Google (who usually points me to Stackoverflow ;-) Several times in the last few days I've found myself wondering "what am I missing?" - I feel that I'm still thinking in Java as I write in Python. This question over at StackOverflow is full of tips about what resources to read up on for learning Python, but I still feel that I'm a Java dev with a dictionary (no pun intended) to translate into Python. What I really want to do is refactor my head to be able to write Pythonic Python instead of Java disguised as Python (not that I want to loose my Java skills). So, the crux of my question is: what concepts does a Java dev really need to learn to think Pythonic? This includes anything that needs to be un-learnt. ps: I consider language syntax to not be particularly relevant to this question.

• How to solve problems with movement in simple tile based multiplayer game?

  I'm making a simple tile based 2D multiplayer game in JavaScript using socket.io where you can move one tile every 200 ms. The two solutions I've tried are as follows: The client sends "walk one tile north" every 200 ms. Problem: People can easily hack the client to send the action more often. The client sends "walking north" and "stopped walking". Problem: Sometimes the player moves extra steps when "stopped walking" doesn't arrive in time. Do you know a way around these problems or is there a better way to do it? EDIT: Regarding the first solution I've tried adding validation on the server to check if it has been 200 ms since last movement. The problem is that latency still encourages people just to spam the action as much as possible, giving them an unfair advantage.

• How do I get movies to work in my dual CD/DVD computer?

  I have an older Dell Optiplex GX620. It has an IDE CD drive and an IDE DVD drive. I cannot seem to get Ubuntu 14.04 to allow movies to play. I've tried installing libdvdcss2 as well as the libdvdread4. VLC was installed last, but each time I attempt to play a movie, the player flashed briefly, then goes back to the initial screen like I didn't even have a DVD in the drive. I'm fairly new to the linux world, so any/all suggestions would be helpful.

• What kind of connection this is?

  I happened to use `netstat' program this morning.. And what I couldn't understand its results. The snap-shot of the results window is given below: Screen-shot is at http://s2.postimg.org/3zt058415/image.png ( I can't post images! :/ ) Can somebody explain me the last entry in the results, where I've pointed them with arrows? [1] I don't understand why `canonical' servers are connected with my computer even if I am not currently using anything that I would expect such a connection to exist. [2] Second, I don't see the PID/Program name of the Program which has made this connection. I would at-least expect a PID.

• What does Enable/Disable mean in Bing's URL Normalization feature?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

• Any tips to learn how to program with severe ADHD?

  I have a difficult time trying to learn how to program from straight text-books. Video training seems to work well for me in my past experiences with PHP. I am trying my hardest to stay focussed and push through. Specifically I am looking to start indie game development. Over the last two weeks I have been trying to pick the "right" language and framework to develop with. I started going through Python, but I am not really enjoying the language so far. I am constantly looking through this website to compare this language to that, and keep getting distracted. Aside from all of this, is it possible to become a programmer when you have trouble focussing? • Up, down, right arrow keys and delete key not working

  I have already read Delete and arrow keys not working and tried what is written there. I have also tried restarting my computer. I have also searched elsewhere for answers, but I haven't found any solution. I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and there were not problems yesterday, but for the last hour, I've had the following problem. When I press the up or the right arrow, nothing happens. When I press the down arrow, it doesn't make anything go down, but something appears in the upper right corner of my screen: http://i.imgur.com/pmnFOCD.png When I press the delete key, nothing gets deleted, but something appears in the upper right corner of my screen: http://i.imgur.com/Wu9czel.png The left arrow still works. • How far back do you use your version control and for what reason?

  Typically when i work on a project i only go back a few days or the last major change when i decide to do something drastic. I sometimes notice i broke a test or a feature and overlooked it for a few weeks so i may go back a month or two and see if the feature or test is broken and trace down the week i broke it. Then find what change did it. On a long term project over the span of a year. Do you actually go back 6+ months and if so why?

• Why is Thunderbird pegging a core at 100%?

  I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice? UPDATE Thunderbird 13.0.1 is quite stable in safe mode. Still working to resolve ..

• Define outgoing ip address when using ssh

  I have an ubuntu server machine (12.04) with 4 IP addresses for different websites that require unique ssl certificates. I sometimes ssh out from this box and the box I am going to I have to tell it what IP address I will be coming from. How do I specify which of the 4 ip addresses I want to use as my outgoing IP address? If i do an ifconfig it appears that I am going out as the last ipaddress. I guess you would want to specify either the address or the interface.... Thanks in advance! -Mark

• Guide to installing a fully encrypted file system?

  I have a little Netbook on which I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 (32-Bit) on. However, since it is a portable PC I want to completely encrypt the file system (in case of theft). Currently it runs Windows 7 Starter and I use TrueCrypt which installs a custom boot loader that asks for the password. I remember from the past that Linux can do that as well by putting /boot on it's own, unencrypted partition. Since it's been ages since I last worked with file system encryption (I remember setting up LVM and a custom patched grub to ask for the password) I wonder how that would work nowadays and if there is a step-by-step how-to for it?

• Changing in pavucontrols tab "Recording" via command line

  I'm using pavucontrol to make changes in the "Recording". I'm changing the source (??) of a Loopback to Null-Output from "Internes Audio Analog Stereo" to "Monitor of Internes Audio Analog Stereo" see the screenshot http://picpaste.de/Bildschirmfoto_vom_2013-10-26_11_32_03-z0KwnFDE.png I'm now looking for a possibility to do this via command line. So far I've done the following: pactl load-module module-null-sink ? creates a new sink pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates a new sink input pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates another sink input pacmd move-sink-input 0 1 ? changes the sink of the sink-input (to Null-Output); this is like changing manually in the pacucontrol tab "Playback". It's just the last part (making the change like shown in the screenshot) via command line that I'm not able to do. I'd be very happy for any advice or suggestions. Thanks already!

• Is programming for me?

  I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this. Plus the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before(a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months..I feel like giving up. Not much training...about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience has kinda making me rethink my decision. Is it me or am I right to be frustrated?
