  • I didn't completely get 100% on a programming job interview, should I worry?

    I recently had a phone job interview with a 1 hour Programming practical. It had two questions on it and I know I answered one completely correct and got most of the second correct. Should I worry about getting the Job just based on that? The actual phone job interview went very well and they told me that I answered their questions well and my questions I aimed at them were very good questions and some they had not heard before but should have in the past. so big question is should I worry? or is not 100% completion ok.

I need a formula/function to go through each cell and the come up with sum of how many instances (column B) there are of the same zip code (column C).There are probably more than hundred different zip codes so I can't do it manually.   • Databinding int32 to MaskedEditExtender enabled TextBox

    I have a master/detail scheme for editing an asp:GridView using an asp:DetailsView. One of my fields is for a phone number of type int64 (always 10 digits). I would like this field to always be displayed as (###)###-####. My issue is the first digit in the phone number is always truncated for my edit item field which I used a MaskedEditExtender to achieve the formatting. Here is my EditItemTemplate for the details view: <cc1:MaskedEditExtender TargetControlID="edtPROJ_Leader_Phone" Mask="(999)999-9999" runat="server" ClearMaskOnLostFocus="false" ClipboardEnabled="true" MaskType="Number" /> <asp:TextBox ID="edtPROJ_Leader_Phone" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("PROJ_Leader_Phone") %>' ></asp:TextBox> When my details view is displayed for editing, the text box displays(_23)456-7890 for the integer 1234567890. Also worth noting that if the property MaskType="Number" is removed, the textbox shows: (234)567-890_. I would of course have the textbox show (123)-546-67890 after binding.

I am trying to convert this into a DataSet, but when I do ds.ReadXml(xmlFile), then it creates two columns: label and value.   • Low Power Speed Monitoring

    I am aware of speed detection via gps, however as a background app, I am concerned about high power drain. I am looking to detect speed, say over 5mph, but it does not have to be accurate, say like a speedometer. Is there a low power way to detect if the phone is in motion, say by triangulation, or tracking tower strength and new/recently lost towers? I have an app design that is dependent on running in the background upon launch and knowing if the phone is in a car or not. Thanks!

    I am currently writing my truly first PHP Application and i would like to know how to project/design/implement MySQL Views properly; In my particular case User data is spread across several tables (as a consequence of Database Normalization) and i was thinking to use a View to group data into one large table: CREATE VIEW `Users_Merged` ( name, surname, email, phone, role ) AS ( SELECT name, surname, email, phone, 'Customer' FROM `Customer` ) UNION ( SELECT name, surname, email, tel, 'Admin' FROM `Administrator` ) UNION ( SELECT name, surname, email, tel, 'Manager' FROM `manager` ); This way i can use the View's data from the PHP app easily but i don't really know how much this can affect performance. I want to use it for my Android application. I don't know how to: Import/Install/Attach/Upload db4o to Android phone.   • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

  • My Android 2.1 Nexus One, rooted and unlocked and unplugged and unchained! Unfreakinbelievable!

    So anyway. i fastbooted and superrooted, and all's fine in the merry old land of Oz. So yeah, now I can see /data/data.. in DDMS, both the plugin and the tool, which is great. but when I attach my phone, I still can't see the main drive. All I can see is the SD card. Using OSX, so when I use Disk Utility, I can see the machine then see the SD Card. is the problem that none of the tools I am using, except DDMS and ADB shell, know how to read that main Android drive? It's the same format as the qemu img, right? Someone HAS to come up with a tool that can do this, let me hack my phone and access the main drive via my USB connector, and mount that drive on my native file system. It just can NOT be that hard. Err, can it? All smiles! Michael

  • NHibernate criteria query question

    I have 3 related objects (Entry, GamePlay, Prize) and I'm trying to find the best way to query them for what I need using NHibernate. When a request comes in, I need to query the Entries table for a matching entry and, if found, get a) the latest game play along with the first game play that has a prize attached. Prize is a child of GamePlay and each Entry object has a GamePlays property (IList). Currently, I'm working on a method that pulls the matching Entry and eagerly loads all game plays and associated prizes, but it seems wasteful to load all game plays just to find the latest one and any that contain a prize. Right now, my query looks like this: var entry = session.CreateCriteria<Entry>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq("Phone", phone)) .AddOrder(Order.Desc("Created")) .SetFetchMode("GamePlays", FetchMode.Join) .SetMaxResults(1).UniqueResult<Entry>(); Two problems with this: It loads all game plays up front. With 365 days of data, this could easily balloon to 300k of data per query. It doesn't eagerly load the Prize child property for each game. Therefore, my code that loops through the GamePlays list looking for a non-null Prize must make a call to load each Prize property I check. I'm not an nhibernate expert, but I know there has to be a better way to do this. Ideally, I'd like to do the following (pseudocode): entry = findEntry(phoneNumber) lastPlay = getLatestGamePlay(Entry) firstWinningPlay = getFirstWinningGamePlay(Entry) The end result of course is that I have the entry details, the latest game play, and the first winning game play. The catch is that I want to do this in as few database calls as possible, otherwise I'd just execute 3 separate queries.   • Opening AFOpenFlowView already in landscape mode

    I'm using the open source CoverFlow replacement from here: http://fajkowski.com/blog/2009/08/02/openflow-a-coverflow-api-replacement-for-the-iphone/ When I detect that a certain view has gone from portrait to landscape mode, I instantiate an AFCoverFlowView and push it onto the navigation stack. If I do so in response to (void)didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation The cover flow view comes up as though the phone were still in portrait mode. If I push the view in response to (void)willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)fromInterfaceOrientation it works perfectly - the view comes up in landscape mode with the phone in landscape mode Unfortunately, the device doesn't reliable get willRotateToInterfaceOrientation messages. I have tried making sure that [[UIDevice currentDevice] beginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications]; is in loadView but that doesn't help with the notificiations. So, my questions are: Is there a way to reliably get willRotateToInterfactOrientation? if not How do I instruct AFCoverFlowView to come up in landscape mode (if the device is already in landscape mode)
