  I use Visual Studio .NET to create a component that will be shared by two client applications. Eventually, I plan to deploy new version of this component. However, not all of the new versions will be compatible with both client applications. When I deploy component and the client applications, I must ensure that I can upgrade the component for a single client application. I must also minimize the need for configuration changes when I deploy new version of the component. What are possible ways to achieve this goal?

  Our first ASP.Net MVC/jQuery product is about to go to QA, and we're looking for a way for our QA guys to easily be able to simulate bad Ajax requests (without modifying the application code). A typical integration/UI test plan might be: Load page, click button "DoStuff" "DoStuff" fails Attempt button "DoStuff" again "DoStuff" succeeds Verify application state This is a simple test case - there will be cases with multiple failures and successes interspersed. Aside from "unplug your network cable" I'm looking for an easy way for our guys to simulate intermittent bad server responses. I'm open to any ideas so I won't go into too many details about our application setup or dependencies. How have you handled this?

• Max tcp/ip connections on Windows Server 2008

  I have .Net service that listens on single port over TCP protocol. Clients connect and then transmit data for some time (from few minutes to several hours). Is there any limit on number of connections on Windows 2008 server? I did not hit any, since now there is up to 50 users. Plan is to have thousands of users, so I'd like to know if there will be problems in future. Edit: As Cloud answered, it seems that there are some limits in some versions of Windows Server 2008. Is there any reference on those limits? I tried Google, but it returns articles on limit on half-bound tcp connections.

• How to generate graphs and statistics from SQLAlchemy tables [Python]?

  Hi all, After running a bunch of simulations I'm going to be outputting the results into a table created using SQLAlchemy. I plan to use this data to generatw statistics - mean and variance being key. These, in turn, will be used to generate some graphs - histograms/line graphs, pie-charts and box-and-whisker plots specifically. I'm aware of the Python graphing libraries like matplotlib. The thing is, I'm not sure how to have this integrate with the information contained within the database tables. Any suggestions on how to make these two play with each other? The main problem is that I'm not sure how to supply the information as "data sets" to the graphing library. Thanks in advance.

• Why is doing a top(1) on an indexed column in SQL Server slow?

  I'm puzzled by the following. I have a DB with around 10 million rows, and (among other indices) on 1 column (campaignid_int) is an index. Now I have 700k rows where the campaignid is indeed 3835 For all these rows, the connectionid is the same. I just want to find out this connectionid. use messaging_db; SELECT TOP (1) connectionid FROM outgoing_messages WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE (campaignid_int = 3835) Now this query takes approx 30 seconds to perform! I (with my small db knowledge) would expect that it would take any of the rows, and return me that connectionid If I test this same query for a campaign which only has 1 entry, it goes really fast. So the index works. How would I tackle this and why does this not work? edit: estimated execution plan: select (0%) - top (0%) - clustered index scan (100%)

  I have been developing a project and in this project i have designed my code to do the same job after a specified time interval continuously. The job that wanted to be done has a lot of distinct cycles. The interval is small to execute them normally thus i used threads. Until that point everything is clear for me. To decrease the process and information transaction i wanted to put an session like object that holds the given data and provide it to any thread at anytime. With this object i plan to not query the same configuration information from database at everytime but if it exists on the session take it else query and store on session. • How can I load a sql "dump" file into sql alchemy

  I have a large sql dump file ... with multiple CREATE TABLE and INSERT INTO statements. Is there any way to load these all into a SQLAlchemy sqlite database at once. I plan to use the introspected ORM from sqlsoup after I've created the tables. However, when I use the engine.execute() method it complains: sqlite3.Warning: You can only execute one statement at a time. Is there a way to work around this issue. Perhaps splitting the file with a regexp or some kind of parser, but I don't know enough SQL to get all of the cases for the regexp. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will EDIT: Since this seems important ... The dump file was created with a MySQL database and so it has quite a few commands/syntax that sqlite3 does not understand correctly.

But I would test the online function and build my application module (I think some body properties not suit for asian people, maybe I still need do more research.). But now I must study others web app before my destop app design. Could I develop my app without the web application owner's permission? Thank you.

  I am in a position where I could become a team leader of a team distributed over two countries. This team would be the tech. team for a start up company that we plan to bootstrap on limited funds. So I am trying to find out ways to minimize upfront expenses. Right now we are planning to use Java and will have a lot of junit tests. I am planing on using github for VCS and lighthouse for a bug tracker. In addition I want to add a continuous integration server but I do not know of any continuous integration servers that are offered as a web service. Does anybody know if there are continuous integration servers available in a software as a service model? P.S. if anybody knows were I can get these three services at one location that would be great to know to.

• Best way to store data for Greasemonkey based crawler?

  I want to crawl a site with Greasemonkey and wonder if there is a better way to temporarily store values than with GM_setValue. What I want to do is crawl my contacts in a social network and extract the Twitter URLs from their profile pages. My current plan is to open each profile in it's own tab, so that it looks more like a normal browsing person (ie css, scrits and images will be loaded by the browser). Then store the Twitter URL with GM_setValue. Once all profile pages have been crawled, create a page using the stored values. I am not so happy with the storage option, though. Maybe there is a better way? I have considered inserting the user profiles into the current page so that I could all process them with the same script instance, but I am not sure if XMLHttpRequest looks indistignuishable from normal user initiated requests.

  I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. • Repeating a List in Scala

  I am a Scala noob. I have decided to write a spider solitaire solver as a first exercise to learn the language and functional programming in general. I would like to generate a randomly shuffled deck of cards containing 1, 2, or 4 suits. Here is what I came up with: val numberOfSuits = 1 (List["clubs", "diamonds", "hearts", "spades"].take(numberOfSuits) * 4).take(4) which should return List["clubs", "clubs", "clubs", "clubs"] List["clubs", "diamonds", "clubs", "diamonds"] List["clubs", "diamonds", "hearts", "spades"] depending on the value of numberOfSuits, except there is no List "multiply" operation that I can find. Did I miss it? Is there a better way to generate the complete deck before shuffling? BTW, I plan on using an Enumeration for the suits, but it was easier to type my question with strings. I will take the List generated above and using a for comprehension, iterate over the suits and a similar List of card "ranks" to generate a complete deck.

• How can I check that I didn't break anything when refactoring?

  I'm about to embark on a bout of refactoring of some functions in my code. I have a nice amount of unit tests that will ensure I didn't break anything, but I'm not sure about the coverage they give me. Are there any tools that can analyze the code and see that the functionality remains the same? I plan to refactor some rather isolated code, so I don't need to check the entire program, just the areas that I'm working on. For context, the code I'm working on is in C/C++, and I work in Linux with GCC and VIM.

• ASP.Net Roles: Page-Level Security Question

  We're currently in the process of re-creating a brand new security model that dwarfs our existing process. Right now, we plan on grabbing a user's roles during the login process and then using a Base Page class to check if the user has the role of the corresponding page the user is navigating to. We can limit the menu's options by the user's roles as well, but we have had problems with users navigating to pages in our system by typing them in or having old bookmarks. Obviously, we need some sort of page level access. A simple function in our Base Page class that checks the role in the Arraylist against the page's assigned role would work, but I was wondering if there was any built-in functionality to support this or a cleaner solution possibly.

• PHP e-commerce site talking to internal database for stock / ordering?

I'm working on an e-commerce site (either bespoke with PHP, or using Drupal/Ubercart), and I'd like to investigate the site interacting with an internal (filemaker) database we use to manage stock and orders. Currently we manually transfer orders from the web site to our own database, and the site does not check or record changes in stock. My plan to allow the 2 to interact is as follows: Make the internal database available externaly on a machine with a fixed IP Allow external access from the site only Connect to the internal database using ODBC (or similar) Use simple queries to check stock / record stock changes / record order details Am I missing something here as this sounds quite straight forward? Is there another solution I should be taking a look at? Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

• Good code architecture for this problem?

  I am developing a space shooter game with customizable ships. You can increase the strength of any number of properties of the ship via a pair of radar charts*. Internally, i represent each ship as a subclassed SpaceObject class, which holds a ShipInfo that describes various properties of that ship. I want to develop a relatively simple API that lets me feed in a block of relative strengths (from minimum to maximum of what the radar chart allows) for all of the ship properties (some of which are simplifications of the underlying actual set of properties) and get back a ShipInfo class i can give to a PlayerShip class (that is the object that is instantiated to be a player ship). I can develop the code to do the transformations between simplified and actual properties myself, but i would like some recommendations as to what sort of architecture to provide to minimize the pain of interacting with this translator code (i.e. no methods with 5+ arguments or somesuch other nonsense). Does anyone have any ideas? *=not actually implemented yet, but that's the plan.

• Google Maps API v3... non-mobile?

  I'm trying to make a Google Maps widget for my website but all of the examples are for full-screen mobile devices. The tutorials work when I copy paste them exactly as shown but they don't seem to work when I want them to only occupy a portion of the page. From what I've read, the v3 is the best API yet (for what I need) because of its speed and compatibility with mobile devices. I plan to make a widget very similar to the MarkerClusterer example from the demo gallery but I can't get it working. Is this a common issue? I know I'm being vague but I would appreciate some help.   Hi Everyone, Is it possible to get the memory address of a variable in C#. What I am trying to do is very simple. I want to declare variables of type Double, Float, Decimal and assign the value 1.1 to each of these variables. Then I would like to go and see how these values are represented in memory. I need to get the memory address of the variable in order to see how its stored in memory. Once I have the memory address I plan to put a break point in the code and use the Debug - Windows - Memory option in visual studio to see how the numbers are stored in memory. Cheers,

• Best way to gather, then import data into drupal?

  I am building my first database driven website with Drupal and I have a few questions. I am currently populating a google docs excel spreadsheet with all of the data I want to eventually be able to query from the website (after it's imported). Is this the best way to start? If this is not the best way to start what would you recommend? My plan is to populate the spreadsheet then import it as a csv into the mysql db via the CCK Node. I've seen two ways to do this. http://drupal.org/node/133705 (importing data into CCK nodes) http://drupal.org/node/237574 (Inserting data using spreadsheet/csv instead of SQL insert statements) Basically my question(s) is what is the best way to gather, then import data into drupal? • Sanitize HTML before storing in the DB or before rendering? (AntiXSS library in ASP.NET)

  I have an editor that lets users add HTML that is stored in the database and rendered on a web page. Since this is untrusted input, I plan to use Microsoft.Security.Application.AntiXsSS.GetSafeHtmlFragment to sanitize the HTML. Should I santiize before saving to the database or before rendering the untrusted input into the webpage? Is there an advantage in including the AntiXSS source code in my project instead of just the DLL? (Maybe I can customize the white list?) Which class file should I look in for actual implementation of the GetSafeHtmlFragment

• Moving from WCF RIA RC to Release: best practices?

  I have an existing WCF RIA project built on the Release Candidate; I'm now moving to the Release version & have discovered many changes. David Scruggs made the following comment on his (MSDN) blog: "If you’ve written anything in SIlverlight 4 RIA Services, you’ll need to rewrite it. There has been a lot of refactoring and namespace moves." Having made a brief attempt to compile the old solution with the new RIA framework I'm inclined to agree. My current plan is to: remove the Silverlight Business Application projects from the Solution rebuild the EF4 items from the database create a new Silverlight Business Application project re-add the files (XAML, CS) from the old Silverlight Business Application project Does this sound like a reasonable approach? I think it's cleaner than trying to manually alter the existing project.

On the other hand I use pictures instead of texts for password and each picture has a code (4 digit) and a password include 4 picture that produce 16 digit. Before I start trying to create the correct loops etc to create and style the table, i thought i best ask if there are already good jquery plugins / php classes create this visual interface and uncluttered enough to allow me to add a select date range method (like Google Analytics)? I'm looking for something to create a basic calendar table on a loop, which i can then style and add jquery features. Though worth asking if there's a complete package that already does what i plan on making?!! (jquery ui's date-picker doesn't look powerful enough / easy enough to modify)

• Add CSS Class to link based on Character Count with jquery

  I have links that load dynamically onto a background to make them look like buttons. Some of the links take up two lines and some of the links take up 1 line. Eithe way they need to be vertically centered. My plan to to append a class based on the number of characters and then adjust the padding from there. So if the link's text is 25 characters (including spaces) or less - append class 'small' if the link's text is greater than 25 characters - append class 'large' How would I go about doing this with jQuery?
