• Technical website - Should I assume that my visitors will use a modern browser?

  I am in the process of creating my own website, which will include a technical blog. I want to build my website using modern technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3. Since my website will be targetted at programmers and mostly tech-savvy users, should I take for granted that these people will be using a modern browser? Or should I make my site compatible with older browsers just in case? I don't want to go through the pain of adapting my website to be compatible with browsers I assume won't be used.

  There is a guy who calls himself c/c++ programmer, but what does he actually know? What knowledge about c++ does he have because there are so much to know about c/c++. So he knows the core language? He knows visual c++? He knows how to program with WIN API? He knows how to program in linux with gtk? Network programming? The real question is: What do you need to know, to be called a c/c++ programmer ,because I know c and I really do not feel like I own the power of programming... please illuminate my path.

  I'm with fresh install of 12.04, having gma x3100 as a video card.   There is a game I want to develop for mobile devices e.g. cellphone/tablet. I have been looking for this game and couldn't find it so I decide to just do it on my own. But I'm worried that there will be legal issues. I'm sorry but I do not know what is the process in doing this. I noticed for example the game Bejeweled Blitz. If I develop something similar, do I have to contact the developer and ask for permission if I develop a game with similar rules but use shapes rather than jewels? The original game exists only on Windows for free. If I develop the game, exactly similar rules but different display, am I allowed to sell it? Thanks...

• Is there an open source solution that I can host on a web server that will allow users to anonymously upload a file to me?

  I'm looking for some kind of web application I can host on my Linux web server that will allow users to upload files of arbitrary size to me from their browser without requiring them to log in. Ideally this application would allow me to generate a link to my website that allowed for a one-time use upload. It might contain a unique, random key that was only good for that session. I could email them the link, they click it and are taken to a page where they can upload their file to me. I'm mainly targeting friends and family that need to send me files that are too large for email. I don't want to require them to install anything (dropbox), sign up and log in, etc. I'm definitely not teaching them to use FTP. This wouldn't be a difficult project for me to roll on my own but I'd like to take something off the shelf if it is possible. Does anything like this exist that my google-foo isn't turning up?

  Given the following scenario A canned enterprise application that maintains its own connection pool A homegrown client application to the enterprise app. This app is built using Spring framework, with the DAO pattern While I may have a simplistic view of this, I think the following line of thinking is sound: Having a fixed pool of DAO objects, holding on to connection objects from the pool. Clearly, the pool should be capable of scaling up (or down depending on need) and the connection objects must outnumber the DAOs by a healthy margin. Good Instantiating brand new DAOs for every request to access the enterprise app; each DAO will attempt to grab a connection from the pool and release it when it's done. Bad Since these are service objects, there will be no (mutable) state held by the objects (reduced risk of concurrency issues) I also think that with #1, there should be little to no resource contention, while in #2, there'll almost always be a DAO waiting to be serviced. Is my thinking correct and what could go wrong?

  I was wondering if there is anyway you can block or exclude people from submitting multiple fake ip's online . For example I have a google pay-per-click campaign set up on adwords. I downloaded a program in minutes which enabled me to hide or give out a fake ip address which also allows you to use a different ip each time. I tried this out on my own link on google which in turn got through adwords and I was charged for the click. My question is how would you be able to counter or block someone who continuosly clicks on your link with a different fake ip each time?

It's currently indexing them on it's own time I believe which is every 2 - 3 days and when working in music and media I need to have the latest post fairly quickly. My robots.txt file is. • How should I license code written for a startup without a contract?

  I wrote a fair amount of code for a startup, but I haven't signed a contract before doing so. The only document that I signed with them does not mention the fact that I have to pass the rights on the code to them, and after a consulting with a lawyer it seems that I own the full rights. Now I want to preemptively correct this situation by giving them some sort of exclusive license. Is there an existing license for closed-source, exclusive use that is used in these cases or I simply write somewhere "I grant exclusive license to use and modify this piece of code to FooBar-inc at the followings conditions: bla bla bla signed me, them"?

But it looks like in Agile cross-functionality means not only combining different specialists, but making them mix. • GitHub OS project how to have a good version and a work in progress version

  I have started my own OS application, I am hosting it on GitHub. My problem is that I push changes to the repository from more than one location so sometimes I want to work on it and sometimes I can't always finish something in time but I would still like to push it anyway so I can fetch it later from my other location. I'd like to be able to somehow have a stable version and have the master branch be a 'work in progress'. How do I do this? Is there some button I can push that will take the code from my master branch and make it into a zip file in my downloads tab and call it a version or should I do this by hand? Would it be better to have the master branch be nice and neat and have a separate branch to play with and then merge the two when the time is right? Would this not cause more problems in the merging phase?

• How do I consolidate the differences between iOS and Android update loops?

  I'm currently working on moving some Android-ndk code to the iPhone. From looking at some samples it seems that the main loop is handled for you and all you've got to do is override the render method on the view to handle the rendering. Then add a selector to handle the update methods. The render method itself looks like it's attached to the windows refresh. But in android I've got my own game loop that controls the rendering and updates using C++ time.h. Is it possible to implement the same here bypassing Apple's loop? I'd really like the keep the structures of the code similar.

• Change the output of the facebook like button [migrated]

  I've tied in the code for the facebook like button from the facebook dev site (I currently use the iframe version) directly into the html of a node (or content post). I want to be able to manipulate what text is sent when someone hits the like button. you can see the site and buttons here www.masteringmoneybasics.org I've tried both the iframe and html5 versions of the button and can't see where to alter what is sent. If there is no way to directly alter what is sent, does anyone know what it looks for in content to be sent so I can structure the node correctly? If you notice, when you like the page, it doesn't get the first sentence of the content, but all content after it, and I've tried putting different content in between the two lines (in its own <p>) and it still grabs the latter. Also how it figures out which image to grab from the page? Most times it doesn't take any image, however twice it's grabbed the middle school image.

• How do I find the dependencies for a program before trying to compile it?

  I was trying to cross-compile a program for ARM. While compiling I was very much irritated as I had to look for a number of dependencies e.g fatal error: abc/xyz.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. After ensuring that compiler gets the missing files, when I recompiled, I got same error for about 30 files. I have no idea if that is normal behaviour. If it is normal, is there a method which can help the compiler find the dependencies on its own? If that is not normal, then please explain what I'm doing wrong.

  I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

• Reduced Tree View in NetBeans IDE 7.2

  Right-click within the Projects window in NetBeans IDE 7.2 and from the "View Java Packages As" menu, you can now choose "Reduced Tree".I never really understood the difference between "Reduced Tree" and the already existing "Tree". But it makes sense when you see it. Here's Reduced Tree view: And here's Tree view, where you can see that the "actions" and "nodes" packages above each have their own top level package nodes, which takes up more space than the above: What's cool is that your selected package view is persisted across restarts of the IDE. • Saving more corsor positions (with tput?) in bash terminal

  I know that tput sc saves the current cursor position and tput rc restores it exactly where tput sc was called. The problem is that every time tput sc is called, it overwrites the previous saved position. Is there a way to save more positions, e.g. tput sc pos1 and tput sc pos2 which can be restored with, say, tput rc pos1 and tput rc pos2 respectively? (The solution need not make use of tput, I mentioned it because it's the only command I know that handles cursor position) If not, is there a way to at least save the cursor position locally in a function, so that if a function uses tput sc and then calls another function that runs again tput sc, then each function restores its own saved cursor position when invoking tput rc?   I've been programming in PHP for about a year and am at the following stage: Have a good 'feel' for the language Can create CRUD applications competently Can utilize an MVC structure to allow for future expansion of code Using the points listed above, I've created a number of my own applications for practise - including but not limited to; a forum, social network etc. My question may be a little vague but should hopefully be answerable. I feel as though there isn't anything else I would need to know about PHP to allow me to create websites, though I'm sure I'm wrong. What advanced/complex PHP topics could I look at that have a real-world use and will allow me to enhance both my skill as a programmer and applications in general? Recently I've looked a lot more at javascript/jQuery allowing me to give my applications a richer user interface which has been a great learning experience and proving very useful.

• wifi works only after connecting through wire

  I have fresh installed ubuntu 12.04. it is my first ubuntu installation and i'm a bit confused about the network connection. Wifi shows up and connects(at least it shows that the connection is established), but i can't open any pages, i've tried to ping some sites and it fails either. If i try to connect through a wire it works, what is interesting to me is that after i used my wire connection i can use my wifi properly without a wire pluged in. i think it probably has to do with my settings? I tried to find a solution but can figure it out on my own. My Proxy set to none(have applied it system wide) Please help me if you have any clue:)

• Will learning wxpython worth it in future? [on hold]

  As we know that microsoft has been pushing Windows 8.1 which strongly uses XAML to design the app and for windows desktop mode WPF is another framework (which probably some thinks it fails) However, in old times, developer write windows form software using MFC or something alike that they have to do their own main loop, etc, etc, and I recently loves python and learning python certainly worth it, since there are still ironpython out there that uses .NET, but I am not sure whether my move to also learn wxpython for building windows software that does not requires .NET worth it also i notice wxpython is somehow old and still uses python 2.7, while today, python already version 3.3, beside that the books are old book published in 2007, and there seems no much hype on building windows form without .NET anymore because .NET is mostly preinstalled in new windows version. So my humble question is, whether should I learn python + wxpython or only python? Is there any benefit that I might not notice for capable in writing windows application that does not use .NET?

• changed plesk root name, what DNS settings get modified?

  we recently changed our plesk server's main URL from siteold.com to sitenew.com. many websites had their NS set to ns1.siteold.com - does plesk automatically update that to need ns1.sitenew.com? should I change the godaddy settings? attempting to change them states "Nameserver Not Registered" - is this simply the delay required? lastly, when adding a new domain to plesk, one would simply need to adjust the nameserver for that site in godaddy to ns1.sitenew.com or ns1.newdomain.com? (does plesk have a centralized name server, or does each site acquire its own?)

• Using Copyrighted Images

  I was thinking about developing a sidescrolling platformer very similar to an old Mario and Luigi game for NES. To start out I was thinking about taking the images from a site like this: http://www.mariouniverse.com/sprites/nes/smb3 Which clearly states a copyright. I was wondering how far I am allowed to take these images. I figure I'm probably allowed to use it for personal development, but what if I publish the game as an exe file and send it to some friends? I figured a definite no-no would be selling the game with the copyrighted images included. A secondary question would be whether or not I would be allowed to modify them slightly and then call them my own.
