• What do you use to loadbalance IPv6 services?

  Hi, the current Linux software environment for IPv6 load balancing looks a bit grim. IPVS has rudimentary support for IPv6 but it's far from complete. NAT for IPv6 seems to be a no-go. Are there any other projects which aim for this goal? Does the IPv6 support in other OS look better? Are there any commercial products which have been successfully used in production environments with non-trivial load patterns? Or is it just that the time for IPv6 hasn't come... yet? ;) best regards, Michael

• Should GeeksWithBlogs move to the Wordpress Platform?

  Geekswithblogs was my first ever blog and my first post was on 22nd June 2006. Since then very little functionality has been added. This is not a complaint, but rather an observation that it is very hard to keep up with all of the blogging capabilities that people want. My point would be: “Why bother!” Vote now for a migration of the awesome Geekswithblogs content from SubText to Wordpress. Having been a long time user of GWB I have been worried of late by my envy of other blogging platforms. I made a number of requests around 10 months ago for things that almost all blogging platforms provide, but which are not available on GWB. Support other comment frameworks – The current comment system is so antiquated that it does not even have the common filters like Facebook, twitter or Google login to help prevent spam. Tags are not listed in the RSS – This can prevent you from getting the Google juice that you deserve 301 redirects to a single URL– If you use a custom URL then all your posts are split between both the GWB URL and the custom one. This is VERY bas for SEO. I realise that it is difficult to find time to add all of the features that all the uber geeks on this site want, so why bother… lets move to the most popular and moded platform available and allow everyone to add whatever widgets they like. • Can you recommend a robust OpenAPI 2.0 provider?

  Help me find a robust OpenID 2.0 provider! We're looking at various SSO solutions for our organization, and I would like to suggest OpenID as a viable option, since (a) there is good consumer support in a number of web applications, and (b) it's simpler to implement than Shibboleth, which is the alternative technology. However, this requires that we find a robust OpenID provider, ideally one meeting the 2.0 specification. The only solutions I've come across so far are: Atlassian Crowd This looks great, although the $4000 price tag may make it a tough sell. Community-ID This looks like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure the project quality is at a suitable level (yet). In particular, it's not clear if LDAP support actually works (which will be a requirement in our environment). Have you implemented OpenID in your environment? What are you using? Have you selected an alternative SSO technology?

• Client-side code and UPK

  There is a long running discussion in UPK Development regarding the use of any client side code as part of the end-user playback. By this I mean anything which requires an install including ActiveX controls, browser helper objects, stand-alone applications, things that run in the task bar, etc. We all have grown to love zero-footprint applications over the past ten years, but there are some things which are not technically feasible using HTML alone. One example of this is the functionality provided by our SmartHelp in-application support component. This allows the user to launch context sensitive help without making modifications to the target application. (If you are unfamiliar with SmartHelp, more information can be found in the "In-Application Support Guide" in the UPK manual directory) We always try to implement everything we can using only HTML but there are many features which have been requested over the years that would require some client-side code in order to work. When these come up for discussion, there is always a spirited debate about the acceptability of a client side solution. I thought it would be interesting to ask for feedback from a wider audience. What do you think about client-side components? Would your organization consider them? Do you already deploy SmartHelp? Is there a large hurdle to clear for these to be worth the deployment costs?   What's a "Cloud Operating System"? Oracle's recently introduced Solaris 11 has been touted as "The First Cloud OS". Interesting claim, but what exactly does it mean? To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. This provides the elasticity needed for cloud systems by supporting on-demand creation and resizing of application environments; it supports the safe partitioning of cloud systems into multi-tenant infrastructures, adding resources as needed and deprovisioning computing resources when no longer needed, allowing for pay-only-for-usage chargeback models. For cloud computing developers, add to that the next generation of Java, and you've got the NIST requirements covered. The results, or one of them anyway, are services like the new Oracle Public Cloud. And Solaris is the ideal platform for running your Java applications. So, if you want to develop for cloud computing, for IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS, start with an operating system designed to support cloud's key requirements…start with Solaris 11.

• Real world pitfalls of introducing F# into a large codebase and engineering team

  I'm CTO of a software firm with a large existing codebase (all C#) and a sizable engineering team. I can see how certain parts of the code would be far easier to write in F#, resulting in faster development time, fewer bugs, easier parallel implementations, etc., basically overall productivity gains for my team. However, I can also see several productivity pitfalls of introducing F#, namely: 1) Everyone has to learn F#, and it's not as trivial as switching from, say, Java to C#. Team members that have not learned F# will be unable to work on F# parts of the codebase. 2) The pool of hireable F# programmers, as of now (Dec 2010) is non-existent. Search various software engineer resume databases for "F#", way less than 1% of resumes contain the keyword. 3) Community support as of now (Dec 2010) is less available. You can google almost any problem in C# and find someone that has already dealt with it, not so with F#. Third party tool support (NUnit, Resharper etc) is also sketchy. I realize that this is a bit Catch-22, i.e. if people like me don't use F# then the community and tools will never materialize, etc. But, I've got a company to run, and I can be cutting edge but not bleeding edge. Any other pitfalls I'm not considering? Or anyone care to rebut the pitfalls I've mentioned? I think this is an important discussion and would love to hear your counter-arguments in this public forum that may do a lot to increase F# adoption by industry. Thanks.

  Hi i have a problem trying to install ubuntu. The machine is a CX Ultrabook model CX.21903W Intel I5 with 500GB hard disk, 8 GB ram and 32 GB SSD. From Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported), and according to the steps guide: 1 - We create a partition from Win8 (70 GB) from the own win8 program. 2 - Confirm-SecureBootUEFI=True. 3 - From Win8, shift + Restart and from special menu we selected the UEFI Firmware Setting. 4 - From BIOS Option: ------Option 1) Disable Secure Boot. ------Option 2) Disable UEFI (Not Available) from Option 1: Three ways is available. With Secure Boot enable - We can't even boot ubuntu. A red windows saying Soft unproper signed. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: UEFI: USB ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu then a black windows appears and nothing happens. The same result if install ubuntu is selected. With Secure Boot disable - and this config in boot device order: ----1: USB (No UEFI) ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others and CSM (Compatibility Support Module): enable - GRUB appears and selecting try Ubuntu, - Ubuntu boots and we can install it even. 5 - Rebooting and just changing the boot order as ----1: Ubuntu [] ----2: Windows Boot Manger ----3: Others then nothings happens. 6 - Booting from LiveUSB again and, as per instructed, making Boot-Repair (A warning windows: Ubuntu is working in legacy mode.). 7 - Saving changes and rebooting, Grub works but selecting Ubuntu, a black windows appears and nothing happens. Selecting Win8, Win8 boots and works. Untill now we can't make the ubuntu installation. Any suggestion will be welcomed. kind regards and thanks in advance.

• SQLRally Nordic gets underway

  PASS is becoming more international, which is great. The SQL Community has always been international – it’s not as if data is only generated in North America. And while it’s easy for organisations to have a North American focus, PASS is taking steps to become international. Regular readers will be aware that I’m one of three advisors to the PASS Board of Directors, with a focus on developing PASS as a more global organisation. With this in mind, it’s great that today is Day 1 of SQLRally Nordic, being hosted in in Sweden – not only a non-American country, but one that doesn’t have English as its major language. The event has been hosted by the amazing Johan Åhlén and Raoul Illyés, two guys who I met earlier this year, but the thing that amazes me is the incredible support that this event has from the SQL Community. It’s been sold out for a long time, and when you see the list of speakers, it’s not surprising. Some of the industry’s biggest names from Microsoft have turned up, including Mark Souza (who is also a PASS Director), Thomas Kejser and Tobias Thernström. Business Intelligence experts such as Jen Stirrup, Chris Webb, Peter Myers, Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are there, as are some of the most awarded SQL MVPs such as Itzik Ben-Gan, Aaron Bertrand and Kevin Kline. The sponsor list is also brilliant, with names such as HP, FusionIO, SQL Sentry, Quest and SolidQ complimented by Swedish companies like Cornerstone, Informator, B3IT and Addskills. As someone who is interested in PASS becoming global, I’m really excited to see this event happening, and I hope it’s a launch-pad into many other international events hosted by the SQL community. • The JavaServer Faces 2.2 viewAction Component

  Life just got easier for users of JavaServer Faces. In a new article, now up on otn/java, titled “New JavaServer Faces 2.2 Feature: The viewAction Component,” Tom McGinn, Oracle’s Principal Curriculum Developer for Oracle Server Technologies, explores the advantages offered by the JavaServer Faces 2.2 view action feature, which, according to McGinn, “simplifies the process for performing conditional checks on initial and postback requests, enables control over which phase of the lifecycle an action is performed in, and enables both implicit and declarative navigation.”As McGinn observes: “A view action operates like a button command (UICommand) component. By default, it is executed during the Invoke Application phase in response to an initial request. However, as you'll see, view actions can be invoked during any phase of the lifecycle and, optionally, during postback, making view actions well suited to performing preview checks.”McGinn explains that the JavaServer Faces 2.2 view action feature offers several advantages over the previous method of performing evaluations before a page is rendered:   * View actions can be triggered early on, before a full component tree is built, resulting in a lighter weight call.   * View action timing can be controlled.   * View actions can be used in the same context as the GET request.   * View actions support both implicit and explicit navigation.   * View actions support both non-faces (initial) and faces (postback) requests.Read the complete article here.

• Spotlight on an ACE: Edwin Biemond

  Edwin Biemond is an active member of the ACE community, having worked with Oracle's development tooling and database technologies since 1997. Since then, Edwin has become an expert in many of Oracle's middleware technologies as well, including WebLogic and SOA. In fact, Edwin has become so prolfic that he was named the Java Developer of the Year in 2009. Edwin hails from the Netherlands, where he is an architect at the company Amis, and is also a co-author of the OSB Development Cookbook. He's a proven expert in ADF, JSF, messaging (Edifact / ebXML), Enterprise Service Bus, web services and tuning of application servers and databases. Recently, Edwin posted a blog on the road map of WebLogic 12c, going over salient features and what the future looks like for Fusion Middleware and the Application Server areas - it's well worth a read, so give it a look. A snippet: WebLogic 12.1.3 will be the first version for many FMW 12c products like Oracle SOA Suite 12c and probably come in one big jar. 12.1.3 & 12.1.4 will add extra features and improvements to Elastic JMS & Dynamic Clusters. Elastic JMS in 12.1.3 will support Server Migration so you can’t lose any JMS messages. In 12.1.4, Dynamic Clusters will have support for auto-scaling based on thresholds based on user-defined metrics. WebLogic 12.1.4 will also have an API to control the Dynamic Clusters, this way we can easily program when to stop, start or remove nodes from a dynamic cluster. • Subscription based eCommerce Site selling Physical Goods

  I want to implement a system where customers can buy physical products as subscription with recurring billing. Customers will come to my site, visit product page and buy stuff. They need to register an account before purchasing. After registration they will be forwarded to payment processor for payment and after successful payment they will be returned back to my site. Requirement: I dont want to use Paypal as a payment processor. It will be recurring payment on monthly, quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis. Customers can login to my site in order to view their Order History, Profile Management and can edit their Billing and/or Shipping details. Customers can cancel their Subscription any time after login to their account on my site. Plan: Currently I am using wordpress with WooCommerce plugin for eCommerce functionality. I am planning to use Amazon as a payment processor. I have searched WooCommerce Extension Drectory and found WC Subscription extension that can be used for my site. But I just confirmed from the Support WC Subscription only support recurring payment with Paypal and Stripe, no other payment processor is supported at the moment. Questions: According to my need, what will be the best solution? I am open to switch the platform from Wordpress to something else that can fulfill my requirement.

• Why TVs are costlier than Monitor for same screen size?

  Just wondering, why LCD/LED-backlit TVs cost more (almost double) than LCD/LED-backlit monitors for same screen size. Because I guess that TVs and Monitors, both use almost same technologies and both nowadays support some common connectors (HDMI/D-Sub/DVI etc). And since a Monitor has much higher resolution than a TV for that size, and they are used more closely than TVs, Monitors probably require more engineering effort. So, Monitors are supposed to be costlier than TVs, right? Ex: A ViewSonic (or any) 22"/26" monitor supports Full-HD resolution at 1080p (WSXGA+-1680×1050, WUXGA-1920×1200), while all 22"/26" HDTVs support HD-ready 720p (WXGA-1366x768) only, which is also the resolution of my Notebook's 15.6" screen.

  Have you observed an ORA-0600 or ORA-07445 reported in your alert log? The ORA-600 error is the generic internal error number for Oracle program exceptions. It indicates that a process has encountered a low-level, unexpected condition. The ORA-600 error statement includes a list of arguments in square brackets: ORA 600 "internal error code, arguments: [%s], [%s],[%s], [%s], [%s]" The first argument is the internal message number or character string. This argument and the database version number are critical in identifying the root cause and the potential impact to your system.  The remaining arguments in the ORA-600 error text are used to supply further information (e.g. values of internal variables etc).   Looking for the best way to diagnose? There is an ORA-600 Troubleshooter Tool available in My Oracle Support.  This tool will lead you to applicable content in My Oracle Support on the problem and can be used to investigate the problem with argument data from the error message or you can pull out the first 10 or 15 stack pointers from the associated trace file to match up against known bugs.
