• How do you pass objects between View Controllers in Objective-C?

  I've been trudging through some code for two days trying to figure out why I couldn't fetch a global NSMutableArray variable I declared in the .h and implemented in .m and set in a the viewDidLoad function. It finally dawned on me: there's no such thing as a global variable in Objective-C, at least not in the PHP sense I've come to know. I didn't ever really read the XCode error warnings, but there it was, even if not quite plain English: "Instance variable 'blah' accessed in class method." My question: What am I supposed to do now? I've got two View Controllers that need to access a central NSMutableDictionary I generate from a JSON file via URL. It's basically an extended menu for all my Table View drill downs, and I'd like to have couple other "global" (non-static) variables. Do I have to grab the JSON each time I want to generate this NSMutableDictionary or is there some way to set it once and access it from various classes via #import? Do I have to write data to a file, or is there another way people usually do this?

• Dispatching generic tasks in WCF or .Net Remoting

  Hello all, I've been researching for a couple days on and off, and have yet to figure out the best way to achieve the following goal. I would like to define either an interface or abstract class in C# which has an associated Run method, similar to the Java runnable interface. The goal would be to have a shared queue which contains a list of these objects. Then individual clients would be able to derive their own concrete runnable classes and add them to the queue hosted by the server. Clients would also be able to pop these runnable objects off the queue and execute them arbitrarily. This seems like it should be feasible in a VM based language without needing to place any of the concrete implementations in a shared assembly, but I have thus far had no luck finding a working example of such a system. Does anyone know how this might be achieved?

• Notify the user on Facebook at some time

  Let's say I have a Facebook application which is monitoring friends birthdays. I want to notify the user that her friend will have a birthday in next two days. The first part is only cron which will check the dates, but is there any way how to notify the user? I didn't found anything for this. It was there a year ago but all of the API changes it looks like the removed all offline messages. I don't want to send an email to the user, it will be much more better to stay with everything on Facebook.

In Lift, I found that, define inner class and inner trait are very heavily used. object Menu has 2 inner traits and 4 inner classes. object Loc has 18 inner classes, 5 inner traits, 7 inner objects. There're tons of codes write like this. I wanna to know why the author write it like this. Is it because it's the author's personal taste or a powerful use of language feature?

• Question about inserting/updating rows with MS SQL (ASP.NET MVC)

  I have a very big table with a lot of rows, every row has stats for every user for certain days. And obviously I don't have any stats for future. So to update the stats I use UPDATE Stats SET Visits=@val WHERE ... a lot of conditions ... AND Date=@Today But what if the row doesn't exist? I'd have to use INSERT INTO Stats (...) VALUES (Visits=@val, ..., Date=@Today) How can I check if the row exists or not? Is there any way different from doing the COUNT(*)? If I fill the table with empty cells, it'd take hundreds of thousands of rows taking megabytes and storing no data.

• How to do a for loop in windows command line?

  I was wondering if this was possible? I'm not familiar with using windows command line, but I have to use it for a project I'm working on. I have a a number of files, for which I need to perform a function for each. I'm used to working with python, but obviously this is a bit different, so I was hoping for some help. Basically I need the for loop to iterate through 17 files in a folder, perform a function on each (that's using the specific software I have here for the project) and then that will output a file with a unique name (the function normally requires me to state the output file name) I would suck it up and just do it by hand for each of the 17, but basically it's creating a database of a file, and then comparing it to each of the 17. It needs to be iterated through several hundred times though. Using a for loop could save me days of work. Suggestions?

• Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

  I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

• What PHP function(s) can I use to perform operations on non-integer timestamps?

  Disclaimer, I'm not a PHP programmer, so you might find this question trivial. That's why I'm asking you! I've got this kind of timestamp: 2010-05-10T22:00:00 (That's Y-m-d) I would like to subtract, say, 10 days (or months, whatever) from this, and have my result be in the same format, i.e. 2010-04-30T22:00:00. What function(s) do I need to do this in PHP? Note: I'm using this to do a computed field in Drupal. The result will be the date that an e-mail is sent. Bonus question: If 2010-05-10T22:00:00 means "May 10, 2010 at 10pm", is there a timestamp equivalent of "May 10, 2010 (all day)"? Thanks everyone.

• How to create and add a custom made component to a Dialog based app (MFC)?

  I want to make a custom made component (a line chart), that would be used in other applications. I don't know 2 things: 1) Where should I use (within component class!) the methods for drawing, like FillRect or PolyLine? In OnPaint handler that I should define and map it in MESSAGE MAP? Will it (OnPaint handler) be called from OnPaint handler of the dialog of the application or where from? 2)How to connect the component, once it is made, to the test application, which will for example be dialog based? Where should I instantiate that component? From an OnCreate method of the MyAppDialog.cpp? I started coding in MFC few days ago and I'm so confused about it. Thanks in advance, Cheers.

• Removing rows from MySQL table where the timestamp is over one day old?

  I found the exact same question here. But it isn't working for me. I've modified it a bit, manipulated it, and I can't figure it out. I'm trying to remove rows that are over a day old. • Is SubSonic dying

  I'm real interested in using SubSonic, I've downloaded it and I'm enjoying it so far, but looking at the activity on github and googlegroups it doesn't seem to be very active and looks a lot like a project that's dying. There's no videos about it on tekpub and Rob seems to be using nHibernate for all his projects these days. I don't want to focus on learning SubSonic and integrating it into my projects if it's not going to live much longer. So my question is what's happening with subsonic development, is there a new release imminent is there lots going on behind the scenes or is it as inactive as it seems?

• How does Array.ForEach() compare to standard for loop in C#?

  I pine for the days when, as a C programmer, I could type: memset( byte_array, '0xFF' ); and get a byte array filled with 'FF' characters. So, I have been looking for a replacement for this: for (int i=0; i < byteArray.Length; i++) { byteArray[i] = 0xFF; } Lately, I have been using some of the new C# features and have been using this approach instead: Array.ForEach<byte>(byteArray, b => b = 0xFF); Granted, the second approach seems cleaner and is easier on the eye, but how does the performance compare to using the first approach? Am I introducing needless overhead by using Linq and generics? Thanks, Dave

• Removing an element from an array (PHP)

  I want to remove an element from a PHP array (and shrink the array size). Just looking at the PHP docs, it seems this can be done using array_slice() and array_merge() so I am guessing (off the top of my head) that some combination of array_merge() and array_slice will work. However, array_slice() requires an index (not a key), so I'm not sure how to quickly cobble these functions together for a solution. Has anyone implemented such a function before?. I'm sure it must be only a few lines long, but I cant somehow get my head around it (its been one of those days) ... Actually, I just came up with this cheesy hack when writing up this question.... function remove_from_array(array $in, value) { return array_diff($in, (array)$value); } too ugly? or will it work (without any shocking side effects)?

• How to remove NSDate objects from a NSMutableArray

  I have been working with NSArrays and NSMutableArrays that store NSDate objects for a few days now. I noticed that calling [listOfDates removeObject:date1] removes all the NSDate objects from the array.   I have been struggling with this for a few days. I need somebody to steer me in the right direction. I have been searching on the web. I am not sure if I took the right approach. What I need is that each time a person hovers over a particular keyword, it should display an alert box. In this example the word is else. • SQL SERVER – Mirroring Configured Without Domain – The server network address TCP://SQLServerName:50

  Regular readers of my blog will be aware of my friend who called me few days ago with very a funny SQL Problem SQL SERVER – SSMS Query Command(s) completed successfully without ANY Results. This time, it did not take long before he called me up with another interesting problem, although the issue he was facing this time was not that interesting and also very specific to him, however, he insisted me to share with all of you. Let us understand his situation at first. My friend is preparing for DBA exam Exam 70-450: PRO: Designing, Optimizing and Maintaining a Database Server Infrastructure using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and for the same, he was trying to set up replication on his local laptop. He had installed two different instances of SQL Server on his computer and every time when he started the mirroring, it failed with common error message. The server network address “TCP://SQLServer:5023? cannot be reached or does not exist. Check the network address name and that the ports for the local and remote endpoints are operational. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1418) Well, before he contacted me, he searched online and checked my article written on the error in mirroring. However, he tried all the four suggestions, but it did not solve his problem. He called me at a reasonable time of late evening (unlike last time, which was midnight!). I even tried all the seven different suggestions myself, as previously proposed in my article; however, none of them worked. While looking at closely at services, I noticed something very simple. He was running all the instances on ‘Network Services’. In fact, his computer was a stand-alone computer. There was no network at all. Also, there was no domain or any other advance network concepts implemented. I just changed services from ‘Network Services’ to ‘Local System’ as his SQL Server was running on his local system and there were no network services. This prompted to restart the services. As this was not the production server and his development machine, we restarted the services on the laptop (do not restart services on production server without proper planning). After changing the ‘services log on’ account to localsystem, when he attempted to reconfigure the mirroring it worked right away. As usually in production server, proper domains are configured and advance network concepts are implemented I had never faced this type of problem earlier. My friend insisted to post this solution to his situation, wherein there was no domain configured and setting up mirroring was throwing an error. According to him, this is bound to help people, like him, who are preparing for certification using single system. • Running an intern program

  This year I am running an unpaid internship program for high school students. I work for a small company. We have ideas for a few side projects but never have time to do them. So we experiment by making them intern projects. In return, we give these interns guidance to learn, personal attentions, and opportunities with real-world projects. A few years ago, I blogged about the idea of teaching kids to write application with no more than 6 hours of training. This time, I was able to reduce the instruction time to 4 hours and immediately put them into real work projects. When they encounter problems, I combine directions, pointer to various materials on w3school, Udacity, Codecademy and UTube, as well as encouraging them to  search for solutions with search engines. Now entering the third week, I am more than encouraged and feeling accomplished. Our the most senior intern, Christopher Chen, is a recent high school graduate and is heading to UC Berkeley to study computer science after the summer. He previously only had one year of Java experience through the AP computer science course but had no web development experience. Only 12 days into his internship, he has already gain advanced css skills with deeper understanding than more than half of the “senior” developers that I have ever worked with. I put him on a project to migrate an existing website to the Orchard content management system (CMS) with which I am new as well. We were able to teach each other and quickly gain advanced Orchard skills such as creating custom theme and modules. I felt very much a relationship similar to the those between professors and graduate students. On the other hand, I quite expect that I will lose him the next summer to companies like Google, Facebook or Microsoft. As a side note, Christopher and I will do a two part Orchard presentations together at the next SoCal code camp at UC San Diego July 27-28. The first part, “creating an Orchard website on Azure in 60 minutes”, is an introductory lecture and we will discuss how to create a website using Orchard without writing code. The 2nd part, “customizing Orchard websites without limit”, is an advanced lecture and we will discuss custom theme and module development with WebMatrix and Visual Studio.

  Everyone has a different way to tackle holiday shopping – Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, some have it done months in advance, and others wait until the very last minute.   For me, I’m not big into massive crowds so online shopping to the rescue.   Others thrive on the energy of being in the stores on the busiest shopping day of the year.  With last weekend marking the official kick-off to the holiday season, I thought I’d provide a round up of what’s trending:   Online numbers are looking up: According to comScore, for the holiday season-to-date, $16.4 billion has been spent online, marking a 16-percent increase versus the corresponding days last year. Thanksgiving Day – Why wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday: Online shopping on Thanksgiving Day also increased, totaling $633 million in receipts, a 32 percent increase over Thanksgiving 2011 Black Friday – More than just in-store: Bargain hunters spent $1.042 billion online the day after Thanksgiving, a 26 percent increase of last year's Black Friday, according to new figures released today by market analyst ComScore Cyber Monday Week: Cyber Monday reached $1.465 billion in online spending, up 17 percent versus year ago, representing the heaviest online spending day in history and the second day this season (in addition to Black Friday) to surpass $1 billion in sales                 Cyber Monday is now being dubbed Cyber Week:  “The annual event is increasingly becoming Cyber Week instead of a one-day event as retailers open their arms for Americans who prefer to avoid crowds and compare prices online.” But, Cyber Monday continues its importance, driving a nearly 22% increase in year-over-year (YoY) online sales. Monday sales beat Sunday, the next highest day by a margin of 26.7%. Mobile shopping continues to rise: ChannelAdvisor that said mobile shopping made up 32% of all online spending over the Black Friday weekend Mobile devices were a key part of the online shopping craziness that was November 26th.  Sales from smartphones and tablets doubled this year. It's gone beyond just a buzzword now, and I think it is going to change the landscape of retail, financial services, healthcare....everything. Let me spend a moment to talk about what i'm going to talk about. Massive amounts of data are being collected every second, more than ever imaginable, and the size of this data is more than can be practically managed by today’s current strategies and technologies. There is a revolution at hand centering on this groundswell of data and it will change how we execute our businesses through greater efficiencies, new revenue discovery and even enable innovation. It is the revolution of Big Data. This is more than just a new buzzword is being tossed around technology circles.This blog series for Big Data will explain this new wave of technology and provide a roadmap for businesses to take advantage of this growing trend. Cases for Big Data There is a growing list of use cases for big data. We naturally think of Marketing as the low hanging fruit.
