  • Ubuntu 12.04 wired ethernet not working and wireless not working, How do I fix it?

    I am new to ubuntu. I recently installed the latest ubuntu for desktop from http://www.ubuntu.com/download. I was very excited to start using ubuntu until I booted the computer and saw that i couldn't connect to the internet at all. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. I keep running into people suggesting installing drivers etc. I have tried about everything and nothing seems to work. I have the ethernet cable connected to the computer but it doesn't recognize it. I ran the following: lspci | grep -i eth and I get this 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) Any help would be much appreciated. I am kind of bummed I have spent all this time tyring to get the internet to work and haven't even gotten to use the power of ubuntu Update copied from comment: Changing the Ethernet cable to a different one fixed the problem.

  • Illegal Instruction When Programming C++ on Linux

    Heyo, My program, which does exactly the same thing every time it runs (moves a point sprite into the distance) will randomly fail with the text on the terminal 'Illegal Instruction'. My googling has found people encountering this when writing assembly which makes sense because assembly throws those kinds of errors. But why would g++ be generating an illegal instruction like this? It's not like I'm compiling for Windows then running on Linux (which even then, as long as both are on x86 shouldn't AFAIK cause an Illegal Instruction). I'll post the main file below. I can't reliably reproduce the error.   • Optimize bootup sequence

    I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10) and suffering really high bootup times. It got so annoying, that I decided to dive into bootchart analysis myself. Therefore I installed bootchart and restarted the system which generated this chart. However, I'm not really experienced in reading such stuff. What causes the long bootup sequence?   • How to show, not download, images in apache?

    I'm dynamically generating some charts using mod_python, in .png and .pdf formats. When a user points to /some/path/some_imagefile_name.png, I want to show the image within the browser, like in this url. I also want the image to be accessible from an HTML <img src=> tag. So far, whenever I point my browser to a .png address from my server, the .png and .pdf are automatically downloaded instead of being viewed. How should I fix this? I tagged this under Apache, since I figured it would be an Apache config thing. If it's not, please point me towards the right direction.

    Hi I am working on C# program to process images ( given as int[,] ).. So I have 2D array of pixels, and I need to rotate them around a point, then scale them down to fit the original array.. I already found articles about using matrix to transform to a point and rotate then transform back.. What remains is to scale the resultant image to fit an array of original size..   • Amnesia crashes

    I am able to launch amnesia all the way through the menu. After I click start new game I am able to play a little bit. I hear the guy talk, then the game just closes. I installed the libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 already as some of the similar problems I found online were fixed by doing so, but did not work for me. My graphics card is Intel GMA 4500MHD. Cpu: Intel Core Duo 2.1 Ghz. RAM: 3GB What else can I do to try and fix this? I'm pretty new to Ubuntu, I just installed it recently. What else (and how) should I post that may help you help me better?

    I just started programming in Excel and I have a problem figuring some code out. I have created a work schedule in Excel with lists in order to add new people. I wanted to create a macro in which the user inputs a value in a cell (I chose B3) and depending on that 'start time' in cell B3, the headers for the lists all change to correspond with that starting time. For example: B3 says 5:00 am. All the headers will follow with: 5:00 am, 6:00 am, 7:00 am, etc. of course the headers will move at some point so I'm wondering how do you point to a cell that moves too?

  • ideas for simple objects for day to day web-dev use?

    Dang-I know this is a subjective question so will probably get booted off/locked, but I'll try anyway, because I don't know where else to ask (feel free to point me to a better place to ask this!) I'm just wrapping my head around oop with PHP, but I'm still not using frameworks or anything. I'd like to create several small simple objects that I could use in my own websites to better get a feel for them. Can anyone recommend a list or a resource that could point me to say 10 day-to-day objects that people would use in basic websites? The reason I'm asking is because I'm confusing myself a bit. For example, I was thinking of a "database connection" object, but then I'm just thinking that is just a function, and not really an "object"?? So the question is: What are some examples of objects used in basic PHP websites (not including "shopping cart" type websites) Thanks!

    This may seen like a weird question, but since we're challenged--as engineers--to constantly adapt to changing technologies, we always find ourselves buried in documentation. That said, we also need to consider that time is of the essence because people want their stuff fixed and improved with little hesitation if any. How do you get through lengthy manuals, books/manuals within a short period of time? Take for example: "The Linux Programming Interface," by Michael Kerrisk, which is roughly 1500 pages in length. How would you get through a monster of a book like this if you're pressed for time while still learning most of the material?

  • How do you diagnose constant crashing issues, or system restore without a backup?

    My recent installation 10.10 keeps crashing on start-up after working perfectly for one day. Nothing new has been installed. I have just moved from XP so I would be very grateful if some one could please explain to me, as simply as possible, how to do the following... How to diagnose the problem so it can be fixed, remember it may have to be before the log in. Is there someway I can do a system restore to its original settings or something without a backup? If the backup reqires some kind of cd, where can I obtain this from? all help is greatly appreciated.

  • How to fix indicator icons from being cut off?

    A friend of mine just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and the icons for the indicator applets all appear cut off on both the bottom and the top. See picture above. Note that the icons in the old systray/notification area on my friend's panel all still display correctly, so it's a problem with indicator clearly. My question: How can this be fixed? (I have a 10.04 system that I did a fresh install on, and I don't have this issue, so I'm guessing it's an issue with upgrading. Thanks.

  • Does anyone else think instance variables are problematic in database-backed applications?

    It occurs to me that state control in languages like C# is not well supported. By this, I mean, it is left upto the programmer to manage the state of in-memory objects. A common use-case is that instance variables in the domain-model are copies of information residing in persistent storage (i.e. the database). Clearly this violates the single point of authority principle, and "synchronisation" has to be managed by the developer. I envisage a system where instead of instance variables, we have simple public access/mutator methods marked with attributes that link them to the database, and where reads and writes are mediated by a framework that decides whether to hit the database. Does such a system exist? Am I completely missing the point, or is there some truth to this idea?

  • YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest does not work in Safari

    When I request a webpage using YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest in Safari I always get Communication Failure message in callback's failure properties statusText. The same method works in IE. What could be wrong here? Here is the code. When the code is executed I always get two alerts: "Three" and "communications failure undefined" (corresponding to the second alert in the failure part below.) Also when I attach the debugger and put break point in the SAProvision.aspx's page load event, the break point is not hit. So it is sure that in safari the page is not being called.   • Fast ceiling of an integer division in C / C++

    Given integer values x and y, C and C++ returns as the quotient q = x/y the floor of the floating point valued equivalent. I'm interestd in a method of returning the ceiling instead? For example, ceil(10/5) = 2 and ceil(11/5) = 3. The obvious approach involves something like: q = x / y; if (q * y < x) ++q; This requires an extra comparison and multiplication; and other methods I've seen (used in fact) involve casting as a float or double. Is there a more direct method that avoids the additional multiplication (or a second division) and branch, and that also avoids casting as a floating point number?
