• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that. • PHP/MySQL User system w/ groups.

  I have a user system set up in a 'users' table, and I have groups set up in a 'groups' table. Essentially, I want users to be able to join any and all the groups that they want, in the same was as one would on facebook. How would one go about structuring this in a mysql/php database system? Just a quick summary would be helpful! I've looked around, but I can only find info on creating 'groups' where the users just have a sort of 1, 2 or 3 permission rank. Thanks!

• Explain to me how the Method Profiler works in the DDMS, I get heap space error

  I start the Method Profiler for a process, then leave it run for about 5-10 secs, then I stop it. • .NET how to output csv from enumeration of anonymous type?

  Using FileHelpers, I decorated a class with [DelimitedRecord(",")] and was going to output an enumeration of objects of that type as CSV. But, it didn't work because my class inherits from ActiveRecordLinqBase<T>, which caused some problems. So, I was wondering if I could just select an enumeration of anonymous types and somehow have filehelpers generate csv from that. I don't like having to define a class just for FileHelpers to output csv. I would be open to using another csv library, but FileHelpers is proven. EDIT @Foovanadil: This would be the sort of thing I am trying to do: CreateCSV(MyCollection.Select(x=>new{ x.Prop1, x.Prop2, x.Prop3 })); Gives you: Prop1,Prop2,Prop3 val1a,val2a,val3a, val1b,val2b,val3b, etc.....

  Using SQL server 2008. I have a family tree of animals stored in a table, and want to give some information on how 'genetically diverse' (or not) the offspring is. In SQL how can I produce sensible metrics to show how closely related the parents are? Perhaps some sort of percentage of shared blood, or a number of generations to go back before there is a shared ancestor? • .Net friendly, local, key-value pair, replicatable datastore

  I am looking for a key/value type datastore with very specific requirements. Anyone know anything that will work? Needs to be a component of some sort. No additional installation needed. The datastore needs to be on the local hard drive. I am using VB.Net for a desktop app running Windows XP through 7 so it needs to callable by that environment. It needs to replicatable. If I have four copies of my app running on the network, each local copy of the datastore needs to replicate with the others. As close to real time as possible. The first three are easy, I can do that with ADO.Net out of the box. The last one, replication, is the one I do not have answer to. Does such an animal exist? Thanks, Brad

• Providing multi-version databases for backward compatibility for production applications/databases.

  How can I manage multiple versions of a database easily? I have some data (as views as selects for data originating in tables from other schemas), which other database may reference using various means including database synonyms & links. I wish to provide a sort of interface/guarantee in-case future for applications/databases which use this data. All of this is for in the event i need to update the views for correctness or applicability inside my database. How can i achieve this in a maintained, controlled and easy way? • What's the best way to view/analyse/filter huge traces/logfiles?

  this seems to be a reoccurring issue: we receive a bug report for our software and with it tons of traces or logfiles. since finding errors is much easier when having a visualization of the log messages/events over time it is convenient to use a tool that can display the progression of events in a graph etc. (e.g. wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org) for analyzing network traffic) what tool do you use for such a purpose? the problem with most tools i used so far is that they mercilessly break down when you feed them huge data traces ( 1GB) so some criteria for such a tool would be: can deal with huge input files ( 1 GB) is really fast (so you don't have to get coffee while a file is loading) has some sort of filtering mechanism

• Remove registry key during uninstall

  Hello there. I have a simple C# application that allows users to specify that it should be (or should not be) started with Windows; it does so by setting (or deleting) a registry key (namely, ...\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\MyApplicationHere). I am using a VS setup project to create the installer for this program. I don't want the installer to create this key; it should only be created when the user selects the option from within the program. Here is the issue: I would like the uninstaller to delete this key if it exists, preferably without resorting to any sort of hackery; if there is a simple "built-in" solution I would love to hear it. • Changing the x-axis of seqlogo figures in matlab

  I'm making a large number of seqlogos programatically. They are hundreds of columns wide and so running a seqlogo normally creates letters that are too thin to see. I've noticed that I only care about a few of these columns (not necessarily consecutive columns) ... most are noise but some are highly conserved. I use something like this snippet: conserve_cell = seqlogo(wide_seqs, 'displaylogo', false); high_bit_cols = any(conserve_cell{2}>1.0,1); [~, handle] = seqlogo(wide_seqs(:,high_bit_cols )); Although when I do this I lose the information about which columns the data came from. Normally I would just change the x-axis of the seqlogo. However, seqlogo's are some sort of crazy java-based object and calls like: set(handle, 'xticklabel', num2str(find(high_bit_cols))) don't work. • MooTools Sortables with horizontal list having problems

  I am having problems sorting list items using the Sortables class when the list items are displayed horizontally. Removing this style fixed everything: display: inline Created an example on jsfiddle. This works. Check the stylesheet for .countries li - it does not display the list inline - http://jsfiddle.net/Wgpqw/ This does not work properly. I can drag the list items around the list, but the sort randomly happens when moving around - http://jsfiddle.net/Wgpqw/1/ I suspect it has something to do with the list element positioning in inline mode. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• rails accessing value from facebooker hash/array

  This is my first time using the facebooker plugin with rails, and I'm having trouble accessing user info. The website uses FB connect to authenticate users. I am trying to get the name of the university that the logged in user attends. When I use the command <%= facebook_session.user.education_history[:name] %>, I get an error "Symbol as array index". I have also tried using education_history[1], but that just returns "# Facebooker::EducationInfo:<some sort of alphanumeric hash value>" When I use something like <%= facebook_session.user.relationship_status %> , it returns the relationship status just fine. Similarly, <%= facebook_session.user.hometown_location.city %> returns the city name just fine. I've checked out the documentation for facebooker, but I can't figure out the correct way to get the values I need. Any idea on how to get this to work? Thanks!

• What are the Worst Software Project Failures Ever?

  Is there a good list of "worst software project failures ever" in the history of software development? For example in Canada a "gun registry" project spent around two billion dollars. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_registry). This is of course, insane, even if the final product "sort of worked". I have heard of an FBI Case file system which there have been several attempts to rewrite, all of them so far, failures. There is a book on the subject (Software Runaways). There doesn't seem to be be a software "boondoggle" list or "fiasco" list on Wikipedia that I can see. (Update: Therac-25 would be the 'winner' of this question, except that I was internally thinking more of Software projects that had as their deliverable, mainly software, as opposed to firmware projects like Therac-25, where the hardware and firmware together are capable of killing people. In terms of pure software monetary debacles, which was my intended question, there are several contenders.)

  It might sound unnecessary, but let me explain my problem first. Probably then it would make sense. Few artists keep updating images based on clients' change requests. An artist makes changes accordingly and commits with proper 'commit messages'. Just before actual commit, I want to create a text file with image properties like size and all the 'commit messages'. And then this file would be committed itself. So basically some sort of pre-commit processing is required. Even though most of the artists are not very comfortable with svn, they can always see what changes were made last time to the image via simple text file. So artists only do update and commit with svn. How this could be done? Are there any better alternatives?

  I have a base class, defined as below (I'm also using DevExpress components): public abstract partial class BaseFormClass<R> : XtraForm where R : DataRow { ... } Contrary to what I've read from elsewhere, I'm still able to design this class. I didn't have to create a concrete class from it to do so. But, when I create a concrete class descended from it (as below), that class won't work in the designer. public partial class ConcreteFormClass : BaseFormClass<StronglyTypedRow> { ... } I get this message: The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed. The designer inspected the following classes in the file: ConcreteFormClass --- The base class 'BaseFormClass' could not be loaded. Ensure the assembly has been referenced and that all projects have been built. Has anyone seen this before? Any sort of known workaround?

• Efficiently making web pages from multiple servers

  I want to create a service that allows diverse web site owners to integrate material from my web servers into content served from their own servers. Ideally the resulting web page would only be delivered from the web site owners server, and the included content would be viewed as being part of the site by Google - which I think would rule out iframes or client-side Javascript to get the content from my server (although I may be wrong about that?). Also the data wouldn't actually be updated that often, say once a day, so it would be inefficient to get the data from my web servers with every request. Finally, the method needs to be as simple as possible so that it is easy for web site owners to integrate into their own sites. Are there any good methods for doing this sort of thing? If not then I guess the simple way is with iframes or Javascript.

  Hello I am looking into authenticating via google. I dont understand how it works:http://code.google.com/apis/accounts/docs/OpenID.html#Samples If i do that 2nd request by entering the data as one url with params into browser i get back XML file. Should i not get back sample response nr3? Can somebody explain this to me? The problem is, that im trying to sort through some third party app that uses google openid authentication and its not recieving authenticated users e-mail back, like in sample response 3. • Java Future and infinite computation

  I'm trying to optimize an (infinite) computation algorithm. I have an infinte Sum to calculate ( Summ_{n- infinity} (....) ) My idea was to create several threads using the Future < construct, then combine the intermediate results together. My problem hoewer is that I need a certain precision. So I need to constantly calculate the current result while other threads keep calculating. My question is: Is there some sort of result queue where each finished thread can put its results in, while a main thread can receive those results and then either lets the computation continues or terminate the whole ExecutorService? • What task can I automate in Python that's fun, simple, and useful?

  I'm trying to learn Python. I'm going to eventually be using it at work, but I don't have an active project in it as of now. I've been reading through some documentation and would like to learn some basics, but I learn best when actually coding. So I'm thinking of attempting a small Python project just to sort of "get my feet wet" in Python. While reading/asking around, I've often heard people say that if you need a Python project you should automate some task you do on your computer on a day-to-day basis. Maybe I'm not so imaginative, but I can't think of anything I'd like to automate... Does anyone have any ideas of something simple, fun, and not too time-consuming that someone can automate to get some basic experience in Python? Something that they would come out of feeling like they accomplished something fun and useful?

• SetSel on EN_SETFOCUS or WM_SETFOCUS doesn't work

  I've ran into next mystic thing in Winapi/MFC, I have an edit box, contents of which I have to select on Tab, Lclick, Rclick, Mclick and so on. The sort of obvious path is to handle the SETFOCUS message and call SetSel(0, -1), which should select all text. But it doesn't work! What's wrong? I tried googling, everyone seems to override Lclilks or handle SetSel in parent windows, but this is wrong from encapsulation point of view, also multiple clicks (user wants to insert something in the middle of the text) will break, and so on. Why isn't my approach working, I tried like 10 different ways, tried to trap all possible focus messages, looked up info on MSDN, but nothing works as expected. Also, I need to recreate the carret on focus, which also doesn't seem to work. SETFOCUS message gets trapped alright. If I add __asm int 3, it breaks every time. It's the create carret and setsel that gets swallowed it seems.

• Use SharePoint Search to crawl Project Server project metadata?

  Our environment consists of Project Server 2007 and MOSS 2007. We have around 750 projects and lots of "Enterprise Custom Fields" set up to track all of the metadata associated with a project. Our main requirement is to be able to search/filter/group/sort all of these projects by metadata in SharePoint. Our current process involves syncing this custom metadata into a SharePoint list (which requires a LOT of maintenance). Question: Is it possible to leverage SharePoint search to crawl/index these metadata fields in Project Server? How would I go about setting this up?

• Regular Expressions: RegEx for determining valid PHP class property names?

  I am using PHP's magic __set and __get methods to access a private array in a class. I want to make sure the property names requested (i.e. $myObj->FakeProperty) are valid according to PHP property name rules before accessing them. My current RegEx isn't doing the trick; with my test values, _12 always falls through the cracks. I'm not actually sure that my test values even represent a realistic representation of what is and isn't allowed for PHP class property names, but I'm not really too concerned about it, just that I have some sort of rudimentary check in place.
